Hello to you listening in Pender Island, BC, Canada!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga.I will tell you something about stories. They didn't come first. They came second. What do I mean? Our oral tradition of narratives, origin stories, creation myths, and so on - up to the present time - came about because we are a meaning-seeking people. Our ancestors looked up into the heavens, saw comets and asked, “What does this mean?” The same with weather patterns, crop failures, upheavals - virtually anything they encountered and did not understand. They created stories to make sense of things, to remember the meanings. They shared those stories with other humans to connect, to bear witness to the lives they were living. And the same is true today.CTA: What would you like to learn about the meaning and power of story? When you're ready I can help. You're invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, follow, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! In this special episode to celebrate the 2025 Merrie Monarch Festival, we sit down with Kumu Hula, Karl Veto Baker, of Halau I Ka Wekiu for a heartfelt conversation that weaves together the art of hula and the spirit of aloha. Kumu Veto shares how his haumana prepare for Merrie Monarch and what it means to watch his dancers rise to the moment. He describes the 50th teaching anniversary of his mentor, Kumu Hula Robert Cazimero, and reflects upon the Hawaiian Renaissance that shaped a generation of cultural practitioners. In the spirit of aloha, Kumu Veto also describes his friendship with Pono Shim and how Pono became the Kahu of Halau I Ka Wekiu. As a businessman himself, we also dive into the intersection of culture and business as well as his hopes for a thriving Hawaii in which kamaaina have the opportunity to come home and give back to their communities. And of course, this episode would be remiss if we didnʻt get an exciting glimpse into the Halau's 2025 Merrie Monarch performances. Join us for a celebration of hula as a way of life. Join us on our journey to uncover what it means to think, act, and live aloha. The inspiration for this podcast is the late Pono Shim, former President and CEO of the Oʻahu Economic Development Board. His stories capture the essence of what it means to live aloha. He made it known that aloha is a lifestyle. It is not a solution to problems, a marketing brand or to be used as an advantage over anyone else. Aloha is to be honored and practiced. The name of this podcast is in reverence of Hawaiʻi's Queen Liliʻuokalani, who wrote: "To gain the kingdom of heaven is to hear what is not said, to see what cannot be seen, and to know the unknowable – that is Aloha. All things in this world are two; in heaven there is but One.” Through these episodes, we seek to find that singular perspective, the one that is "above the sides" as we strive for universal peace. We welcome you to pause with us as we share the stories and voices of Hawai'i business leaders, educators and community members who have chosen to be lifelong students of aloha. Mahalo nui loa for listening.
Today, the “four pale horsemen” of war, famine, pestilence and death have broken into our comfortable lives once again. As the climate emergency and shortage become normalised, how do we live through crisis after crisis without falling into fear and anxiety on the one hand, or agitated reaction and rage on the other? Do we face the horsemen, go into denial or settle for the dull throb of numbness? And how do we maintain contact with the heart, with soul, with love and compassion? In this week's classic episode, Andrew speaks with award-winning poet, author and teacher William Ayot about: ⭐️The burdens men carry ⭐️The healing power of ritual ⭐️Male loneliness and how men's groups help ⭐️Confronting shame and anger As well as his writing and poetry, William Ayot leads workshops and seminars on personal development topics and creates and conducts private rituals and ceremonies. William is also the co-founding director of Olivier Mythodrama and worked around the world for ten years, teaching leadership through story, theatre practice and ritual. He founded NaCOT- The National Centre for the Oral Tradition, and hosts the poetry series On the Border. If You're Looking for More…. Questions? Comments? Text Us!Jerry shares his fascinating revelations during prayer concerning the prophet Zoroaster's profound encounter with the divine.Zoroastrianism is one of the world's oldest known monotheistic religions, but few know its rich history—largely preserved through oral tradition—that allows us to understand what God was communicating to Zoroaster through the cosmic battle between good and evil.In this powerful narrative, we're introduced to the figure of Ahura Mazda—the embodiment of wisdom and goodness—and His counterpart, the Hostile Spirit, often perceived as God's “evil twin.” This story dives into the eternal struggle between light and darkness, a central theme in Zoroastrian belief and one still deeply relevant to the modern spiritual seeker.Join us as we explore these ancient revelations and how they continue to echo in our understanding of the divine, the nature of evil, and the choices our souls are called to make. Are you paying attention? How did his letters become so central to Christian theology, and what happens when we begin to question that authority? Are all the Pauline epistles actually written by Paul? What if the Paul we know today is a constructed figure—reshaped by the church over time to fit emerging doctrines? And what about the voices that didn't get amplified—texts like James or the Didache that present a very different version of the Jesus movement? Nate and Shel explore how canon formation, authorship debates, and theological evolution all intersect in the story of Paul, and why rethinking his role might change how we read the entire Bible. Today, we're back on our dinosaurs & dragon's bullsh*t, delving deep into the rich tapestry of global folklore to explore the fascinating possibility that ancient dragon myths may be rooted in real-life encounters with dinosaurs. From the mist-shrouded peaks of China to the dense jungles of Central Africa, legends of dragons abound in cultures worldwide. Could these stories, steeped in heroism and adventure, hold more truth than we ever imagined? Join us as we investigate the extraordinary claims and evidence that suggest dragons might not be as mythical as we think. In this episode, we'll journey through time and across continents, examining intriguing historical accounts and folklore. We'll look at how ancient texts, such as those from Pliny the Elder and Marco Polo, describe dragons in vivid detail. These stories, rich with cultural significance, offer a tantalizing glimpse into the past and challenge our understanding of history and science. Whether you're a skeptic or a believer, this episode promises to ignite your curiosity and expand your horizons (or trigger you uncontrollably, nonstop, depending on how chill you are). 979. In the first segment, we unravel the mysteries surrounding the origins and transformation of punctuation. From the early days when words ran together without spaces, to the introduction of punctuation systems by scholars like Aristophanes, we explore how punctuation has played a pivotal role in shaping written communication. In the second segment, we look at noun clusters that can gum up your writing. You'll see how simple steps like reordering, adding clarifying words, and transforming nouns into verbs can transform noun clusters from mind-bending to crystal clear. > The punctuation segment was written by Valerie Fridland, a professor of linguistics at the University of Nevada in Reno and the author of "Like, Literally, Dude: Arguing for the Good in Bad English." Central Pennsylvania is rich in cultural heritage, and one individual stands as a beacon preserving the essence of African-American oral tradition in our community. Lenwood Sloan, our esteemed local Griot, embodies the multifaceted role of the traditional African historian, storyteller, and musician. Sloan, like the Griots of old, serves as a custodian of our collective memory, passing down stories, songs, and wisdom through generations. His vibrant presence in our community not only entertains but educates, reminding us of our shared humanity and the importance of cultural heritage. As a Griot, Sloan holds a special position of influence, akin to an advisor to royalty. His insights and narratives offer guidance and perspective, enriching our understanding of history and society. Moreover, Sloan's involvement in erecting the Juneteenth monument in front of our state capitol underscores his commitment to commemorating pivotal moments in African American history and promoting social justice. In an era dominated by digital media, Sloan champions the power of oral tradition, emphasizing its role in fostering connection and empathy. Through storytelling and music, he bridges gaps between communities, fostering dialogue and understanding. Sloan's dedication to preserving African-American oral tradition enriches the cultural tapestry of Central Pennsylvania, ensuring that the legacy of the Griots continues to inspire and enlighten generations to come. As we celebrate his contributions, let us recognize the importance of honoring our local Griot and the timeless wisdom he imparts.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Dr. John Knight Lundwall joins InnerVerse to discuss his groundbreaking book, Mythos and Cosmos: Mind and Meaning in the Oral Age. Picking up the torch where hundreds of years of academia missed the mark, Dr. Lundwall guides our understanding of mythology as a technical language akin to scientific jargon, exposes the epistemological wall between literacy and orality, explains the analogical aspect of oral myth via the example of human sacrifices, and ponders why oral cultures did not keep histories as we know them. In the Plus+ Extension we turn our discussion towards the category error of modernity to consider oral rites and stories as religion, question just what religion is through the example of the cult of state mandated "public health," the Renaissance prodigy Camillo and what his memory theater informs us of our own potential to recall complex ideas, the relationship between light pollution and literacy, and what it means to marry the best of both the oral and literary mind. "My analysis not only allowed me to grieve [my mother], with my analyst patiently pushing me in the direction of my feelings, but it radically transformed my life. I wouldn't have had kids if I hadn't had my analysis because I thought ‘I'm an ambitious person, I want a career, you can't do everything'. I didn't know any models of women who had a career and enjoyed motherhood. In my analysis I learned just through analyzing my own dreams and free associations, that this was all a rationalization. I was a very maternal person and I had the unconscious belief that if you become a mother you die. Once that was conscious, I talked to my husband who was excited about the idea about having kids. We had our two daughters, and so my life is in very concrete ways radically enriched by my psychoanalysis. So I went into the field with a deep conviction of how therapeutic this process is and it's been kind of a straight line from there." Episode Description: We begin by describing the arc of learning that characterizes our psychoanalytic life journey. The oral tradition starts with our first supervisors and extends from there to study groups and to becoming a supervisor oneself. Nancy shares with us her professional trajectory from being an eager college student first encountering Freud to becoming a best-selling psychoanalytic author. She relates the transformative experience of her own analysis, the steps of maturation in her clinical work, and how she has faced the traumas of older age. We discuss the role that students have in relating to their more experienced colleagues and we close with her sharing her hope for our field's future. Our Guest: Nancy McWilliams, PhD is Visiting Professor Emerita at Rutgers Graduate School of Applied & Professional Psychology and has a private practice in Lambertville, NJ. She is author of four textbooks (on psychoanalytic diagnosis, case formulation, therapy, and supervision) and is co-editor of both editions of the Psychodynamic Diagnostic Manual. A former president of the Society for Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy of the American Psychological Association, she is a member of the Austen Riggs Center Board of Trustees. Hello to you listening in Spokane, Washington!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga.“I will tell you something about stories, he saidThey aren't just entertainment.Don't be fooled. They are all we have, you see,all we have to fight offillness and death.” ~ Leslie Marmon Silko, Haida Ceremony [The Golden Spruce by John Vaillant, p. 145]Haida NationI may be an old fashioned storyteller clinging to the oral tradition, especially when working with your narratives that function as origin stories, creation myths, messages of all kinds to be seen, heard, understood, repeated and followed, as well as cautions for the young and memories for the elders. Why do I insist on the music of the spoken word? Because that's where the magic happens: at the intersection of the story, the listener, and the teller's voice with its cadence, tone, inflection, repetition, pacing, and energy. So much gets lost in translation to the printed page. What we yearn for without even knowing it is human connection. My clients learn how to connect with their stories and with themselves to be in better service to their purpose.Question: What would you like to learn about the power of story? When you're ready I can help. You're invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, follow, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! About The Guest(s): Obi Kaufmann is an artist, author, and naturalist known for his California Field Atlas series. His latest book, "The Deserts of California," explores the biodiversity and ecological systems of California's deserts. Summary: Obi Kaufmann joins hosts Chris Clarke and Alicia Pike on the "90 Miles from Needles" podcast to discuss his latest book, "The Deserts of California." The book is part of his California Field Atlas series, which aims to explore the how of ecological systems rather than the what or where. Kaufmann shares his fascination with the complexity and diversity of California's deserts and the importance of celebrating and understanding their biodiversity. He also discusses the challenges of conservation and preservation in the face of development and exploitation. Kaufmann emphasizes the need for a democratic approach to finding solutions and the power of combining data and love in stewardship efforts. The conversation touches on the changing nature of the deserts, the importance of oral tradition and sharing knowledge, and the role of beauty and art in inspiring curiosity and hope. Key Takeaways: The California Field Atlas series aims to explore the how of ecological systems rather than the what or where. The deserts of California are full of biodiversity and ecological complexity, challenging the perception of them as empty spaces. Conservation efforts require a combination of data, love, and understanding to address the challenges of development and exploitation. The deserts are a moving target, constantly changing and adapting to new conditions. The power of beauty and art lies in its ability to inspire curiosity and hope. When things get too simple, too generalized, we miss so much." - Obi Kaufmann "The desert is doing so much heavy lifting for both of those goals [conservation and carbon zero]." - Obi Kaufmann "Democracy is having this conversation right now here." - Obi Kaufmann "The desert itself is an indicator landscape, if you will. It's a litmus test of our stewardship." - Obi Kaufmann "Acceptance of the natural cycles and patterns in nature brings peace and understanding." - Alicia Pike "The combination of data and love is a powerful force for conservation and preservation." - Obi Kaufmann Become a desert defender!: https://90milesfromneedles.com/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We are back to the Sermon on the Mount – with "YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH" – Matthew 5:17-20. Jesus is being accused of undermining and dismantling God's WORD, when just the opposite is TRUE. The spiritual leadership of Israel had replaced the written Word with Oral Traditions, as Christ rejected the Oral Traditions, the Scribes and Pharisees accused Christ of rejecting the TRUTH. So the Lord spells out his commitment to God's living Word
I. Unlike the angels, Jesus is the Creator and Controller of the Universe, vv10-12. II. Unlike the angels, Jesus is the exalted victorious ruler over all his enemies, v13. III. Whereas Jesus came to save us, he sends his angels to serve us, v14.
In this series, students from the Department of Communications' spring 2023 oral traditions class explore West African cultures and the African American diaspora. Students draw comparisons between their own cultures and that of the Maroons, formerly enslaved Africans who fled imprisonment and formed close-knit communities throughout the americas. Professor of history and humanities, Robert Hanserd, joins to discuss specific cultural elements. Our second segment explores rituals and spirituality of the Fon people. The discussion includes the West African region of Ghana and Benin, the rituals of women warriors, and Robert's rite of passage in writing about Africa. Concluding today's show is a commentary on the book, Five Hundred African Voices, the accounts of African slave ship survivors. Students highlight Rosa Cruz, a formerly enslaved writer and religious mystic, and Phillis Wheatley, the first known and published African American poet.
I. In vv1-2 We hear the accusation of the Pharisees against Jesus. There we see the hypercritical legalism of false religion. II. In vv3-6 we hear the counterattack of Jesus against the Pharisees. He exposes their insincere religious commitments and hardness of heart. III. In vv7-9 we hear Jesus sum up the Pharisees as pretenders, with no true heart for God.

This week's Torah reading cycle begins the book of Deuteronomy, and Jim Long and Rabbi Chaim Richman ponder the transition to this unique book of Torah in this week's podcast. Our hosts discuss the essential and indispensable Oral Tradition, misunderstood by some as ‘traditions of men' but in reality, G-d's own authoritative, sacred wisdom as revealed to Moses at Mount Sinai and passed on through every generation, from teacher to student; an inseparable and integral unit of Torah. ___ Rabbi Chaim Richman Jerusalem Lights | Torah for Everyone Please support the work of Jerusalem Lights, a USA recognized 501 ( c ) 3 non-profit organization to enable these productions to continue and grow: Paypal: infojerusalemlights@gmail.com or: https://paypal.me/JerusalemLights?loc... The Music of the United States of America Series of musical editions is a monumental undertaking funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities with financial and organizational support from the University of Michigan, the American Musicological Society, the Society of American Music, and A-R Editions. The aim of the MUSA series, as it is called, is to provide expertly researched and edited scores of music from a wide variety of musical traditions performed in the United States. The thirty-second volume of the MUSA series is An American Singing Heritage: Songs from the British-Irish-American Oral Tradition as Recorded in the Early Twentieth Century published by A-R Editions in 2021 and edited by the Anne Dhu McLucas, Norm Cohen, and Carson Cohen. Dr. McLucas passed away before the edition was completed and Carson stepped in to complete the project with his father Norm. This collection of one hundred songs is a record of a fundamental repertoire in American music. Brought to this country by colonists, the folk songs became one of the foundations of the genre that early record executives called hillbilly music which was eventually rebranded as country music. Each entry has extensive notes explaining the piece's background and text, information about the recording used for the musical transcription, and a list of secondary sources that discuss the song. An American Singing Heritage required the editors to sift through thousands of recordings and songs to pick a representative sample of this large and fascinating repertoire. The editors selected sources for transcriptions in a broad range of singing styles and representing many regions of the United States. The selections attempt to avoid the biases of previous collections and provide a fresh group of examples, many heretofore unseen in print. The sources for the transcriptions are recordings of traditional musicians from the 1920s through the early 1940s drawn from commercial recordings of "hillbilly" musicians, and field recordings in the collection of the Library of Congress's Archive of American Folk Song, now part of the Archive of Folk Culture. The American Musicological Society awarded the collection the 2022 Claude V. Palisca Award for an Outstanding Edition. Kristen M. Turner is a lecturer in the music and honors departments at North Carolina State University. Her research centers on race and class in American popular entertainment at the turn of the twentieth century. Learn more about your ad choices. In this 4th theological lecture on understanding Jewish culture, Dennis explores Jesus' relationship to the Pharisees, explaining how breaking their traditions resulted in his rejection 2000 years ago, and how undue loyalty to traditions continues to plague the Church today.
Tom answers listener questions on the New Testament. Were the Pharisees all bad? How do we reconcile the different Gospel endings about where the disciples stayed after the resurrection? Is the oral tradition, before the Gospels were written down, reliable? • More shows, free eBook & newsletter: https://premierunbelievable.com • For live events: http://www.unbelievable.live • For online learning: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/training-and-events • Support us in the USA: http://www.premierinsight.org/unbelievableshow • Support us in the rest of the world: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/donate
