Mel also reveals how her groundbreaking "Let Them Theory" emerged from a transformative moment at her son's prom, where her daughter's blunt advice changed everything. Her powerful perspective on building self-belief through consistent action rather than external validation offers a blueprint for anyone feeling stuck—success isn't about perfect habits or natural talent but simply showing up when you don't feel like it and refusing to let discouragement win.Mel's books:The Let Them Theory: A Life-Changing Tool That Millions of People Can't Stop Talking AboutThe 5 Second Rule: Transform your Life, Work, and Confidence with Everyday CourageThe High 5 Habit: Take Control of Your Life with One Simple HabitIn this episode you will learn:Why success is ultimately about not quitting, even when everything feels impossibleHow to develop faith in yourselfThe two biggest obstacles to achievementWhy external success never repairs internal self-worth, without addressing your relationship with yourselfHow to recognize and reset your nervous system when it's stuck in chronic fight-or-flight modeFor more information go to https://www.lewishowes.com/1761For more Greatness text PODCAST to +1 (614) 350-3960More SOG episodes we think you'll love:Mel Robbins – greatness.lnk.to/1710SCGabby Bernstein – greatness.lnk.to/1714SCMelissa Wood-Tepperberg – greatness.lnk.to/1690SC Get more from Lewis! You're not going to succeed in your relationship or business if you don't take care of your body and your health.” “You cannot achieve anything different in your life if you stay the same … You gotta become the kind of person that can live that life.” “For those who are thinking that they want to head into the world of an entrepreneur, balance is a luxury that you're never going to be able to afford. Nowhere in our lives are we ever equally balanced, but we can have harmony in the midst of what's going on.” “The only way to teach someone is to be an example to follow — is to show by doing. Walk the walk, talk the talk.” “I see selfish as taking care of self. I don't see it as a bad thing. I see it as a good thing, because it's only when we take care of ourselves, it's only when we fill our cups, it's only when we're happy that we can share that happiness. It's when we're wealthy that we can share that wealth. You can't pour from an empty cup.” “Not doing what you don't want to do just keeps you in that nice space, so I could give quality time to my children.” “If I'm scared, it means I need to do it. I call it my fearless muscle.” “Life is about having all kinds of experiences and feeling the emotions, and just kind of being fully in it.” “People will forget what you do. People will forget what you say, but people will never forget how you make them feel.” “What we invest in ourselves—in our mind and our growth—pays the biggest dividends.” BOOKS MENTIONED: The Power of Moments: Why Certain Experiences Have Extraordinary Impact by Chip and Dan Heath (https://a.co/d/8TmHceP) Chicken Soup for the Soul: Power Moms by Jack Canfield (https://a.co/d/dYxEhnf) The Let Them Theory: A Life-Changing Tool That Millions of People Can't Stop Talking About by Mel Robbins (https://a.co/d/hH18d0o) The Surrender Experiment: My Journey into Life's Perfection by Michael A. What does it mean to be feminine? What does it mean to be masculine? More importantly, what does it look like to be connected with our divine masculine and feminine? These polarities are present in all of us; sometimes we display balanced energy and other times we are completely out of whack. In order to address an unbalanced energy, we must first know what balance looks like. Sacred masculine energy looks nothing like the toxic masculinity we've come to recognize in patriarchal society. Similarly, sacred feminine energy is in direct opposition to the clinging, desperate energy we see in the unbalanced feminine. As we wander through the woods on this misty afternoon, get in touch with the energy within you, it's time to meet the sacred! Buckle up, listeners. It was only a matter of time before our paths crossed with Mel Robbins, one of the most respected experts on change and motivation in the zeitgeist, and today is that day. Known for being the host of the #1 ranking education podcast in the world, bringing deeply relatable topics, tactical advice, tools, and compelling conversations to her audiences, Jen and Amy spend today's hour diving into Mel's “Let Them” theory, which is taking the world by storm, already delivering instant peace and freedom in the lives and relationships of people putting it into practice. Together, they discuss: The difference between “Let Them” and “Let Me” Learning to release the white-knuckle grip we hold over other people's behavior (and other things beyond our control) Reframing disappointment to view it as a gift (yes, it's possible!) Repositioning self-worth inward, rather than leaving it dependent on others' opinions. *** Thought-provoking Quotes: “For a lot of women, we spend so much time upstairs in our heads as people-pleasers and over-analyzers, over-thinking and ruminating, trying to get things perfect. That's the last place I should be, personally. I need to drop into my body and get out of my head.” – Mel Robbins “People reveal who they are and what they care about through their behavior. Ignore their words. Watch their behavior. Let people be who they are. Let them do what they're going to do. Focusing on them is not where your power is.” – Mel Robbins “The difference between ‘not my business' and ‘let them' is worlds apart. When you say, ‘not my business', you're scolding yourself. With, ‘let them', you're in the power position because you see what's happening and are choosing to allow it without allowing it. You're rising above it.” – Mel Robbins “There's something about learning that [people] aren't ever going to change but that doesn't mean your relationship can't change for the better. When you let them be who they are, you create space for acceptance, the whole energy shifts.” – Mel Robbins Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Demotivators - https://despair.com/collections/ Effin Birds on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/effinbirds/ Van Morrison - https://www.vanmorrison.com/ No Hard Feelings by the Avett Brothers - https://open.spotify.com/track/0bgQ1hQrpP6ScdBZlDfLE2 Foo Fighters - https://foofighters.com/ DePeche Mode - https://www.depechemode.com/ The Cure - https://www.thecure.com/ Taylor Swift - https://www.taylorswift.com/ The 5 Second Rule: Transform Your Life, Work, and Confidence with Everyday Courage by Mel Robbins - https://amzn.to/427OHwu The Let Them Theory: A Life-Changing Tool That Millions of People Can't Stop Talking About by Mel Robbins - https://amzn.to/4hc53bE The Mel Robbins Podcast - https://www.melrobbins.com/podcast The Four Questions: For Henny Penny and Anybody with Stressful Thoughts by Byron Katie - https://amzn.to/3C7tKXT My Legacy Podcast - https://www.iheart.com/podcast/1119-my-legacy-podcast-255793246/ Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl - https://amzn.to/4ajbyaz Dr. Stuart Ablon - https://www.stuartablon.com/ The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life by Mark Manson - https://amzn.to/3PCqxmi Guest's Links: Mel's website - https://www.melrobbins.com/ Mel's podcast - https://www.melrobbins.com/podcast Mel's Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/melrobbins/ Mel's Twitter - https://x.com/melrobbins Mel's Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/melrobbins Mel's YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/melrobbins Mel's TikTok - https://www.tiktok.com/@melrobbins Connect with Jen! This conversation dives into the heart of personal growth, resilience, and building a life centered on peace and purpose. Mel begins by explaining the core of the “Let Them Theory,” which is about recognizing the limits of control. She emphasizes the importance of letting others be who they are, accepting situations as they unfold, and redirecting focus to what’s within your power. Through vivid examples, Mel demonstrates how this approach can reduce stress, strengthen relationships, and reclaim wasted energy. Jay and Mel also explore the emotional weight of unmet expectations and the difference between “Let It Go” and “Let Them.” Mel shares how this subtle shift in mindset fosters empowerment rather than passivity. Small Biz Matters: People, Policy, Purpose ~ Episode #249 Broadcast date: 15 Oct 2024 Host: Alexi Boyd, Small Business Advocate & Policy Advisor Guests: Professor Barney Glover AO, Jobs and Skills Australia Commissioner For years surveys have told us that one of the biggest concerns for small businesses in almost every industry is finding the right people with the right skills, to get the job done. When unemployment statistics are discussed in small business circles it's not just about the macro-economic number, there is real world impact. A tight labour market impacts on a small business owner differently since they're the ones who compete for and attract talent, then manage the longer wait times to find, employ and train the people for their business. And when the economy is challenging as it is right now, small businesses would rather pay themselves less than lose their local employees and go through the arduous process of finding more staff. Despite warnings from advocates, many industries have experienced years of underinvestment in skills, training and institutions. Apprentice completion rates are problematic, some courses were cut or defunded, and the difficulty as a small business owner trying to navigate across state jurisdictions all led to general confusion in the market. Some industry associations tried to resolve the skils shortages in their industry by becoming RTO's (registered training organisations) but then found themselves dedicating manhours to navigating this complex system. The whole situation was made worse by the COVID pandemic, the departure of migrants and more recently, a drastic cut to international student numbers. So the Federal Government established Jobs and Skills Australia to bring cohesion to the industry, better access to skills for workers and a simpler system for employers. Their vision is “for the full skills potential of our nation to be realised, resulting in improved workforce participation, productivity, wages and equity.” This week Small Biz Matters is proud to welcome the Jobs and Skills Commissioner, Professor Barney Glover AO to deep dive into the workforce and skills shortages faced by small businesses and how Jobs and Skills Australia will aim to solve this complex policy and issue. PEOPLE – Can you tell us a little bit about Jobs and Skills Australia and how you are engaging with the small business community to consider jobs of the future and meeting the shortfall of the skills required for growth? POLICY - Skilled migrants speak of barriers to work such as requiring local experience get their foot in the door. Is Jobs and Skills Australia looking at innovative ways to link the skills we need with the migrants struggling to find work? PURPOSE - Tell us about the Jobs and Skills Australia Atlas project. How will it work to solve the difficult problem of matching the needs of regional small businesses and availability of skilled workers? Professor Barney Glover AO is the Commissioner of Jobs and Skills Australia. Professor Glover began his five-year term as Commissioner in 2024. Professor Glover is a distinguished academic leader, an accomplished mathematician and mathematics educator with significant experience in developing strong relationships with the vocational education sector. He is well respected for his engagement with First Nations Australians and disadvantaged communities. He was Vice-Chancellor and President of Western Sydney University for ten years, from 2014-24, and in 2019 was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to tertiary education, professional associations, and cultural organisations. In 2015, Professor Glover was awarded the title of Emeritus Professor for his outstanding leadership whilst Vice-Chancellor of Charles Darwin University from 2009 to 2013. Professor Glover was awarded the title of Emeritus Professor and an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from Western Sydney University in 2024 in recognition of his decade of leadership. Small Biz Matters: People, Policy, Purpose ~ Episode #245 Broadcast date: 20 Aug 2024 Host: Alexi Boyd, Small Business Advocate & Policy Advisor Guests: Dr Sherman Chan, Chief Economist at Business NSW Dr Sherman Chan is one of those few economists who, when they explain a complex problem, it makes sense. That's why whenever you attend a BusinessNSW event where she is presenting or read their quarterly Business Insights data report, the science of economics becomes a little clearer. Small business is on the roller coaster of macro economic conditions, and its currently on the downward side of the big dipper. It is of course greatly affected by interest rates, unemployment rates and inflation (the usual suspects) and well aware of the micro conditions facing their own small business but the insights coming from small business can paint a clear picture for policy makers too. This is particularly true when that data is robust, clearly presented and consistent in its undertaking. It's a powerful tool for both small businesses but politicians and policy makers who are ultimately making decisions which affect your business every day. Dr Sherman Chan is passionate about making small business data meaningful, accessible and importantly impactful to these policy makers. Regularly briefing small business intel from the quarterly business insights report to the likes of NSW Treasury, the RBA and federal politicians, she has an intelligent approach to data gathering, presenting it in a clear and relatable way, Dr Sherman Chan is exactly the right person to deliver the information you need to understand the state of small business right now. PEOPLE – Can you tell us a little about yourself and why you're so passionate about supporting small businesses through data? Why has business New South Wales continue to produce the Business Insights report? How have economists become so influential in the media and advocacy work and critical in the decision making process when it comes to policy decisions made by Government? POLICY - What difference can surveys make to the policy direction for businesses in NSW? What's the difference between your Saturdays and the work that the ABS does? How do the surveys influence the policy work of BusinessNSW? How do you use the surveys to drive decision makers? PURPOSE Can you tell us a little bit about the BusinessNSW surveys that have been running for many years? How are they put together? And how do you decide which questions to ask? How influential are they? Sherman is an economist with experience in government, banking and consulting. In her role as Chief Economist at Business NSW, Sherman drives strategic research and builds the evidence base for policy advocacy. She manages the quarterly Business Conditions Survey – Business NSW's flagship research product that generates insights into business opportunities and challenges across key industries in NSW. Prior to joining Business NSW, Sherman was a Senior Manager in the Risk and Regulatory Consulting practice at MinterEllison. This followed a six-year stint in NSW Government with agencies including NSW Treasury and the Audit Office of NSW where she led large-scale program evaluations and performance audits. Sherman's journey as an economist also includes working at Moody's Analytics and HSBC (Hong Kong) during the Global Financial Crisis, covering economies and financial markets across the Asia-Pacific region. Sherman also has experience working at the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority. Sherman holds a PhD and a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours in Economics) both from UNSW. Proficient in both macroeconomics and microeconomics, Sherman has been a Lecturer at UNSW since 2014. She specialises in government policy evaluation, impact measurement and cost-benefit analysis. Business NSW is the peak business organisation for New South Wales representing the needs of 48,000 businesses across the state. Making it more difficult for small business advocates, is the fact that small businesses are affected by spending decisions every single policy area and every single government department. PURPOSE - What are the positives from this research about the future of small businesses in Australia? Or, should we be worried about growth and innovation? There is clearly a strong link between migration and small business success. This data proves it. Gavan is an expert on business and the economy, with a special interest in small and medium enterprises in Australia and Asia. Gavan meets frequently with governments to give CPA Australia's perspective of the impact of policy changes on the business sector. He also makes regular appearances in media commenting on business conditions and the economy. Sometimes, it takes direct experience to understand the value of innovation. Born out of personal crisis, Luminoah is developing a solution to enteral nutrition, or tube feeding, that will dramatically improve patient quality of life.In Episode #27 of the MedTech Speed to Data podcast, Key Tech's Andy Rogers talks with Luminoah CEO Neal Piper about bringing much-needed innovation to in-home care.Need to knowTube feeding is extremely common — Every year, half a million new patients, from infants to geriatric patients, can't swallow solids or liquids and require an alternate means of nutrient supply.Enteral nutrition lets patients live at home — A patient with long-term needs has a gastric feeding tube inserted through their abdomen into their stomach so they can leave the hospital.Yet the current standard of care is bulky — Patients must manage an IV pole, peristaltic pump, replaceable nutrient bags, and two meters of tubing.Slow pumps limit freedom further — Patients become defined by their illness, unable to go to work or school.Current products do not track data — Because tracking nutrient consumption is difficult, many patients are readmitted to the hospital for malnutrition. The nitty-grittyNeal's decision to enter the enteral nutrition sector was not the result of market analysis or laboratory research. “It came out of a personal need for my wife and I when my son, Noah, turned three years old. He started choking on his saliva and food.” Doctors at the UVA Children's Hospital discovered a tumor in the base of Noah's skull that prevented him from eating or drinking. Noah rang the bell and ended his therapy after 18 months of chemotherapy.“Fortunately for us, we had a really positive outcome,” Neal said, but the experience opened his eyes to the challenges kids and adults face in similar situations. “Everyone says, don't obsess about the solution, obsess about the problem, and that's what we did.”After interviewing GI surgeons, nutritionists, distributors of feeding solutions, and many patients, Neal confirmed that Noah's experience was not unique. “The major challenge that patients are dealing with is a lack of portability, an unintuitive approach, and not being able to track and be empowered with data.”Data that made the difference:Understanding the problem can justify a research program, but it does not explain how Luminoah could raise $1 million seed and $6 million Series A rounds in a tough investment climate. Noah explained how his team pressure-tested what he calls the 5 P's of business development:Product Validation: Can you design a manufacturable product that solves the problem?Plan: What's your go-to-market strategy? What does the financial model look like? Patent strategy: Can you protect the technology?People: Can you find experienced people to drive the project forward?Pathway: Can you get from development through 510(k) approval?“Three and a half years in, we're about a month away from design three,” Noah explained. “We've got a working device we're submitting to the FDA for 510(k) approval with clearance anticipated in 2024.”Learn how the Charlottesville, Virginia, biotech ecosystem and a community of enteral feeding patients supported Luminoah's journey in the full video here:

Surprisingly! There were left-overs from last night's taco mix up I put together. A reheat tonight and it will top our roasted eggplant! Eggplant halved lengthways. Diamond score the flesh…DO NOT cut all the way through with the scoring! Salt & pepper to taste, apply avocado oil with garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, and basil. Bake at 415 degrees Fahrenheit until golden brown and the flesh is soft. Here's where I'll be adding on the left-over taco mixture from last night…you add on the top what you like. Bake again at 415 until the toppings are heated through. Serve HOT! What is it about successful people that sets them apart from the rest of humanity? Is it just plain skill and talent? These help, of course, but I find that it's their resilience and grit in the face of adversity that distinguishes them from the rest. And Debbie Adams is no exception. She has taken on every obstacle in her way and made them stepping stones to her success. Her story is nothing short of inspiring, and I truly believe that her journey has just begun. So I invite you to listen in as Debbie and I talk about: Her background growing up in Newfoundland and her mother's accident that changed her life Joining the military where she found her second family and the devastating reason why she had to leave that structured environment Separating from her husband and taking her daughter with her, and enrolling in university in the same year The feeling of not being hired despite her skills, and how she found out that starting her own business was the way out of poverty The “crabs in a bucket” mentality and why she's the crab that got out of the bucket Fully living her purpose today and being excited for what the future holds for her When you go through setbacks and difficulties and decide not to give up, that's inner strength. And it is this strength that will bring out the best in you and push you to new heights. So don't give up. Let Debbie's story inspire you to always persevere and move forward as you work your way towards the best life that's meant for you. 87 - Changes That Save Relationships https://smallstepspod.com/?p=3182 People Can't Make You Crazy If You Don't Give Them the Keys by Dr Mike Bechtle Everyone Should Be Like Me – We think there would be less drama if everyone is like us. People are unique and have their own DNA, their own path, and therefore cannot be like us. Let People Do What They are Good At – The best way to deal with others who add arguments and drama to our lives is to find out what they are good at and encourage them to make that thing better. We might even try to find ways to make them better at that thing. How to Speak Without Reaction – We must learn to speak calmly and without the inner emotion, we are feeling. That hint in our voice could cause more drama if we play out our emotions. Temperament vs Behavior – Temperament has to do with the nature of the other person. They might behave badly or with anger without being bad people or angry people. We must realize they might act in a certain way for other reasons. Reaction vs Response – Your reaction might be hurt or anger or other emotions. It helps if you can learn to control that. But your response is how you act towards other people, and you must control this. You might act in a way that causes permanent damage to that relationship that you will regret. Control Your Emotions – In the end, you can control your emotions, so your behavior and your response are kept in check naturally. You feel more relaxed and not a victim of the relationship if you learn how to control emotions. It takes time but it is worth it. Be Committed to Others – Relations require commitment. We live in an era where we get and dump relationships all the time. A true commitment to others and the relationships will help you to keep that tie and hang in there when it is tough. It takes work but that is the heart of every commitment. Don't Sweat the Wrong Stuff – We can’t get upset when others are wrong. We can let them be wrong. It’s ok. We can agree to disagree. They have good points too. View Through a Lens of Kindness – If we start with the idea that others have good points and good thoughts and got there with the best intentions it will allow us to be kind. When we bring kindness to our relationships, it allows us to treat others with dignity. Keep Your Integrity – In every interaction keep your integrity. It is the one thing that makes us a person of strength and decency. Never let people upset you so much that you do something that could jeopardize it. This is a Long-Term Gain – To build and keep and repair relationships is a long-term activity. It takes work and tough times, but the value is immeasurable over time. Don't Just Avoid Conflict in the Middle of the Road – Don’t be a wimp just to get along with others. That is not what it takes. Just giving in on every point doesn’t ensure the relationship will be strong. Instead, hold your own opinions but listen and give people the benefit of the doubt. Allowing another to have their own opinion means that you too can have your own. Get Help – In the end, if the relationship cannot be worked out, get help. That investment of another professional viewpoint can make all the difference. Challenge Which situation can you change about yourself? Is there an assumption you're making about someone in your life that maybe isn't correct? Or maybe you're putting yourself in the best situation, and the other person in a worse situation? See if some thinking about that relationship, couldn't change some of the drama involved, and take it down. Find where you can get together and find calm and peace inside your relationship. 86 - Take the Key from Drama https://smallstepspod.com/?p=3179 People Can't Drive Your Crazy If You Don't Give Them the Keys People are Full of Drama – When we have relationships, they can be full of drama and can make us feel upset. But how do we decide if we stick to the relationship or leave it. Everything is Emotional, Shocking, Personal – When we get upset it is because something happened that is emotions involved in the situation. If something is shocking, it can upset us as well. When conversations become personal, they can make us upset or feel threatened. We Think We Can Control People – We think we can control others and fix their thoughts and decisions. But we can’t really change anything. We Can Change the Situation – If we can’t change others, we always have the option to change circumstances. If people stay too long when we invite them others to our house. We can limit the time or change locations. Are We Always Right? – We think we are always right and always think things for the right reasons, but we are blind to our own mistakes. Ensuring that we leave room in our thinking for the possibility we are wrong will help us get along with others. I am an Angel; they are the Devil – We also think we have the best of intentions and others who disagree with us have bad intentions or listen to people with bad intentions. Relationships are Important – In the end other people are important and we need connections to others. We must stick to them if we can. We Don't Have to be a Victim – Staying with relationships that have drama must not mean we are to be victims of other people or victims of our own emotions. We need to find a place where we can be in control and not taken advantage of yet still have others in our lives. There is Hope – We have hope that with a few steps we can have both other people and control. We Can Only Change Ourselves – In the end we can only change ourselves and our own actions. We Can't Make Others Change – Other people make their own decision. We can’t change them or their actions. Everything is Viewed Through a Lens – We can’t tell when we are looking at others or our options through the filter of our own biases and bad decisions. Be an Influencer – The best we can hope for is to be an influence to others. We can encourage people to get along or not fight with us. We can praise people when they act in a way that doesn’t. make us upset. Expectations and Expectancy – Expectations get us in trouble because we can expect others to change or decide we are right. Expectancy instead allows us to hope for a better relationship with others without expectations. Stop Acting on Autopilot with People – If we react automatically to others, we will have bad relations because we aren’t thinking about others and what they are thinking or if what they are saying has value. We just react without thinking about what our actions will do to others. Family is Important – We need other people, and we need family. They are important and protecting those relationships is worth the work. Challenge Identify one relationship that could use a little attention and see, is it possible you can change the circumstance of how and where, and when to take the punch out of the situation? Write down that relationship and write down three things you could do that might mitigate some of the annoying drama that you have between you. Isaiah 22 Sermon Notes:1) The Valley of Vision Can't See the Coming Commotion, 1-8 2) The Self-Sufficiency of God's People Can't Replace Repentance, 8-11 3) The ‘Senseless Revelry' of God's People Can't See beyond the Now, 12-14 4) The case studies of self-centeredness can teach us, if we let them, 15-25 Reflection questions:1. What does Carpe Diem mean? What does Coram Deo mean? Which one seems like a more Biblical way to live? 2. Read I Corinthians 15:1-34, especially v12, 19, and 29-34. What reference do you see to Isaiah 22? How does Paul correct their attitude and their beliefs in 1 Cor 15? 3. Refection quote: “The words of v11b (and of 37:26) are a striking anticipation of chs.40-66, where God is repeatedly named as (lit.) ‘making and forming' (who made … who planned) and as doing so from of old (cf. 43:7; 44:2, 24). It is another hint of single authorship.” (Derek Kidner, p646 from the New Bible Commentary) In other words, Isaiah, through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:20-21), is the single author. There are not 2 or 3 or more Isaiahs who wrote this book.

What is a Virtual Cidery? A virtual cider is a cidery managed out of someone’s else’s cidery, or winery and in some cases a brewery. This week's featured guest is Ryan Monkman of FieldBird Cider in Prince Edward County Ontario. I met Ryan in 2018 and visited his Virtual Cidery host Keint-He Winery. The location was ideal being close to where Ryan lives making it very easy for him to manage the barrels of cider stored in the amazing underground barrel room. Ryan Monkman The arrangement or agreement is key to the success of this cidery model. Ryan discusses the following options to consider. The virtual maker (VM) does sales, while the host does packaging. The VM does everything. Virtual Makers must decide: How involved do you want to be? Benefits of the Virtual Cidery Model Low risk - you get to test your brand and product without having to set up a full brick and mortar site Low financial up front costs The VM and host have the potential to do collaborations. Selecting the right Virtual Host For Ryan, he found three key areas to consider People : Can you get along with the people who work there and the owner? Equipment: is the host site equipment going to meet the VM needs? Maintenance: If equipment breaks, can you wait till the host fixes it? Plan for unexpected costs - If the barrel steamer is broke, it is in everyone's best interest to get it fixed instead of waiting for the host who might be strapped for cash. Episode 21:2 - Insulin Resistance: What You Need To Know... And Why If you enrolled in a Nutrition class, what would you expect to learn? Facts about vitamins, minerals, protein, fat and carbohydrates? Absolutely. How to heal with herbs? No doubt. What you may not expect to learn is “How the Fuel System of the body works.” And, that’s a shame because how the body fuels itself is of vital importance. Something you NEED to know. Yet it’s seldom taught… even though it’s not difficult to understand. You see, your body’s Fuel System provides fuel, or “energy”, to every cell, muscle and organ of the body so they can perform the functions for which they were designed. HOW the Fuel System does this is as follows: 1) The food you eat provides your body with fuel. 2) The cells, muscles and organs take, and use, the fuel they need. 3) Any “excess” fuel is either stored in the liver or turned into fat. This process works great… until something goes wrong. And, believe it or not, something goes wrong for millions of us. Not with the Fuel System itself, but with how much we ask of it. We “flood it” with too much fuel… especially from starches and sugars. As a result, we develop "Insulin Resistance"... which can lead to the development of some bad things. Things like obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s… and increased chance of dying from the Coronavirus. (Yes, an overworked Fuel System can increase your chances of dying from the Coronavirus!) But that’s not all. In our opinion, many other health problems are either caused or significantly affected by an overworked Fuel System… especially those problems that aren’t responding to any type of treatment. There is, however, some good news: The damage done by an overworked Fuel System system can be corrected! People CAN reverse these Fuel System problems. Conditions can be cured! Not by some “miracle” drug or pill but by LEARNING how the Fuel System was designed to work… and then working WITH it! THAT’S what this episode is about… learning how the Fuel System works. Our guess is that you’ll learn more about this topic from this episode than you ever have from a doctor. More importantly, you’ll be inspired to make changes that will have a positive impact on your health… and on your life :)

Ryan Foland with Jason Barnard at Kalicube Tuesdays Ryan Foland talks to Jason Barnard about business and marketing. Truly effective marketing comes down to ensuring people can find your business when they need your products or services. Sounds simple? It is :) Ryan talks about his concept of the invisible like - a concept I love because it gives encouragement to all of us with our content creation. We then move on to inbound marketing to help people find your business, and specifically appreciating that your employees are one of the best inbound marketing tools you have at your disposal. I then pull in SEO - how all this could apply to Google and more specifically E-A-T. Ryan beautifully circles back from authority and trust to his 'invisible like'. Leadership AdvantEdge: Leadership | Influence | Talent | Neuroscience
Encourage Your aptitude (your "natural" ability to do something) is thought by many people to be the main driver of their success. We raise people with those noticeable talents onto pedestals in a form of worship. Imagine yourself as a star soccer player, or the lead singer in your favourite band, an actor in an awesome movie. There are even some people who are simply famous at being famous. But everyday life for the vast majority of people isn't a movie. Our giftedness is a little less flashy and a little more humdrum. And almost every day we come across challenges and difficulties and it is how we face those challenges that sets us apart. Indeed, since Daniel Goleman's research for his landmark book, "Emotional Intelligence", others have gone on to reinforce that the "how" you approach challenges is far more important than what you actually do to resolve them, about 80/20. How you approach something is determined by your chosen attitude to the situation. And what matters here is that you can choose your attitude in spite of your initial feelings. And choosing a good attitude will improve your outcome and sets you above in the eyes of others. As Zig Ziglar originally shared, Your Altitude is determined more by your Attitude than your Aptitude. Develop: 5 Power Attitudes My own research shows that those who are most successful over the long term share three questions they ask themselves and five power attitudes they adopt, as if they were real, to face daily challenges successfully. In your brain, the process we are going to reframe whatever the problem, challenge or situation you observe. Like me and everyone else, when you come across a problem or challenging situation, your brain notes two key things: What is perceived to be happening or what is involved - the Content, and What is the setting in which this is happening - the Context. Both of which rely on your personal judgement and perception, which is influenced by your prior experience and memory and all of your personal, cognitive biases - which inform and shape your attitude to the situation. Successful and admired leaders pause a moment before judging the situation and consider different angles and approaches to help find the optimum solution, they deliberately adopt one or more of five power attitudes: Respect the OTHER person’s model of the world The meaning of your communication is the RESPONSE you get back People are NOT their behaviours People CAN change anything There is NO failure, only feedback 1. Respect the OTHER person's model of the world The way you and I view the world is different. Everyone looks at the world through a lens shaped by memory, experience, upbringing, values, beliefs, parents, exposure to media and etc. In the USA, political party affiliations are known to shape how someone interprets the same news about a speech by a presidential candidate. Religious beliefs often determine how one person views a situation compared with someone seeing exactly the same thing, but with a different belief. I'm not suggesting that they are right and you are wrong, nor am I daring to suggest that you should change your beliefs or affiliations. I am simply asking you to respect that they have their views and you have yours. They are as entitled to their perspective as you are to yours. I'm not even asking you to wear their shoes and imagine what the situation may look like if you shared their belief, their experiences. I am suggesting that you simply have due regard for their feelings, wishes, beliefs or rights. When you look at the situation now, you may find a better way to approach the challenge that may have greater chance of success for all concerned. Wear the attitude as if it were true and see how your greater empathy build more trust. 2. The meaning of your communication is the RESPONSE you get back "I just don't get it" she said to me. That was my fault. It wasn't that she was insufficiently able to make it happen, it wasn't that she hadn't listened to every word. It was my failure to communicate what I was explaining in a way that she understood and "got". That was my problem. When I was much younger, I would have blamed her. Maybe she was too dense, too inexperienced, not paying attention, unmotivated... anything of a myriad reasons why she didn't understand. Not once would I have questions my communication skills. What's far worse for many leaders, is that the other party doesn't use words in response. Many leaders I have coached complain that, in spite of their (incredible, wonderful, timely, on-point, and brilliant) communication, their staff are not following through. No-one said anything of course. Their response was to not do what was expected, for whatever reason. What is the response you are getting? You are facing a challenge and you know that you have communicated, but did they get it? I mean really get it? The response you are getting (non-compliance, lack of action, no promotion) is the meaning of your communication. Own the problem and choose another, better way of communicating. Wear the attitude as if it were true and use the response you get as feedback to better communicate. 3. People are NOT their behaviours When someone behaves badly (in your view) this does not define them as a person. We all love to label people based on their behaviour (as we see it!) Just this morning I walked passed people who were behaving, angry, frustrated, miserable, sad, tired, exhausted, rushed, harassed, concerned, troubled, rude, friendly, happy, smug and self-satisfied. All of those labels are judgements. Sure, there is some evidence in their behaviour that makes those labels true for me, this morning. But these labels are NOT the person. We are often too quick to notice one behaviour, label it, generalise it for that person and then pin that label on them. The angry man, the rude woman, the troubled youth, the tired old man. And the moment we do that we change our behaviour towards them. And we do so knowing full well how we dislike being labelled by others. You know that is not "you" all the time. You may well be upset in certain circumstances and display anger, but you know that that does not make you an angry person. I was once asked at a conference how we should deal with "difficult" people. As I reminded the questioner, there are no "difficult" people, only people whom we find it difficult to interact. What we want to do is deal with or change the behaviour whilst loving the person. Wear this attitude as if it were true and address the behaviour while loving the person. 4. People CAN change anything "I can't do anything..." How many times have you heard others say that? How often have you said it yourself? It's possibly the most disempowering thing that someone can say. It's when you are frustrated with a situation or a person and feel that you have tried so many ways to fix it and feel powerless. Heck, you may even be genuinely powerless to change the situation or the person... but you can change you. When you feel as though you can't, remember Joe Strummer's (Lead vocalist of The Clash) quote: "People can change anything they want to, and that means everything in the world." Wear this attitude as if it were true and you too can change the world. 5. There is NO failure, only feedback Thomas Edison famously said: "I haven't failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." Often, we try to change something in life and discover that the world has got other ideas. If you think of it as failure, you focus on failing and it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Instead view any lack of success as feedback that this way was not working and seek another way. This is not to say that you persevere against all odds and keep on until the blood drips from your fingers, or your head splits from banging against the wall. Be wise and know that sometimes, the feedback means stopping and moving on to the next better thing. Wear this attitude as if it were true. And if you fail to do that, then there's some feedback for you to try wearing it another way :-) Guide Using the any of the five power attitudes creates a momentary cognitive dissonance (that's that uncomfortable mental feeling you get when you try to hold two or more contradictory ideas or beliefs simultaneously) When you experience this discomfort, your brain needs a resolution to the dissonance and you seek a solution to the problem in question. You may struggle with this because your brain is trying to use or create a new neural pathway, reconciling old memories and even re-evaluating them in light of this new belief. And because the five power attitudes that you wear as if true are positive beliefs, this will lead to happy thoughts, improves your ability to analyse and think, increases your attentiveness, stimulates the growth of new nerve connections and leads to more happy thoughts. You'll be more creative, solve problems faster and tend to be more alert. In short, your ability to deliberately choose a specific positive attitude towards any problem will enhance your aptitude and make you more successful. Empower You want to take a fairly disciplined approach to this process, it will help you embed it and quickly establish this deliberate attitudinal change as a normal part of pausing a moment before finding solutions to problems. I use post-it notes to help steer my thinking. Write on six post-it notes(or paper) the phrases: The Problem Respect the OTHER person’s model of the world The meaning of your communication is the RESPONSE you get back People are NOT their behaviours People CAN change anything There is NO failure, only feedback Place them on a desk or a wall in front of you and focus on the problem. Describe the problem using the following questions: What is the problem? What are the consequences of the problem for me? What are the implications for others around me? How does the problem make me feel? How do I experience that feeling? Can I describe it to me? What impact does the problem have on my performance? Now, which of the 5 “Power Attitudes” would best assist in solving this problem? Focus on the most appropriate “Power Attitude” note and considers the problem from that new attitude. Consider the problem ACTING AS IF this power attitude were true. “Looking at the problem from this power attitude what options do you have?” “What will the pay-offs be for adopting this new power attitude?” Now you have a new approach to the problem. Test the problem with each of the five power attitudes, always acting as if this attitude were true. One or more of these attitudes will offer a possible solution. We have yet to come across a problem that does not change after genuinely reframing the problem using one or more of these five attitudes. Actually, there are exceptions: problems that do not involve people in any way, which isn’t many. Our normal world view tends to view problems as, well, problems. We have our view and often get caught up in the emotion of doing something about the problem (ignoring the problem is still doing something about it). Take time with each and every problem you come across. Deliberately choose one of these power attitudes. I recommend deliberately shifting your body to take a different view. ACT as if the power attitude is true. Consider the problem in just the same manner as this exercise.
Stay positive. Feed yourself so you can feed others. These are the key messages of Jon Gordon, author of bestselling book The Energy Bus and today's guest. Jon and I met a few months back when we shared a stage at a client event. I've always loved the transformative fable he shares in The Energy Bus (about what happens when you change your mindset when entering "the bus of life" each day) and was excited to hear more about the man behind the story. Today, you're invited to hear this discussion! Jon shares "stories even his closest friends haven't heard!" Many about the little known challenges leading up to his best-selling book career (the book was rejected 30 times before it was published; it had little reception for the first 5 years). Jon's story is about being positive and feeding yourself so you can feed others. Here are a few of my favorite takeaways: "Sometimes you have to lose a goal to find your destiny." - Gordon "There is one song and we are part of the symphony." - Gordon "We are positive not because life is easy. We must be positive because life is hard." - Gordon Negative thoughts will always come in; you don’t have to believe them. Your faith must be greater than you fear. You must overcome negativity to become a successful leader. The "bus" story came to me during a walk of prayer and gratitude. People CAN become more positive! No one wants to be negative, we blame circumstances and that breeds more negativity. Realizing this gave me the concept for the Energy Bus and the idea that you have to be the driver of your own bus. You have to empower yourself. "Don’t allow life to define you. Define your life." - Gordon [Tweet this.] Why did Jon succeed? Faith and grit. A few ideas from Jon to become more positive: Feed the positive, not the negative. Learn to talk to yourself; not to listen to yourself. Research shows you can’t be grateful and stressed at the same time. Spend timing each day being grateful: Gratitude journaling, take a gratitude walk, etc. "The media is the bible for the fearful." - Gordon "We create our world not from the outside in but from the inside out." - Gordon Enroll in Jon Gordon’s Positive University for free in January 2017.
