What if we're approaching mental health all wrong? A revolutionary new therapy is debunking popular therapy narratives and changing how we treat anxiety and overthinking. We're continuing our Mental Health Awareness Month series with this introduction to Metacognitive Therapy (MCT), a groundbreaking new approach to treating anxiety, overthinking, OCD, depression, panic attacks, and more, without the usual coping strategies and trauma processing.Unlike traditional talk therapy, Metacognitive Therapy helps people break free from the cycle of worry, rumination, and distress by targeting the way we think about our thoughts — not the thoughts themselves. This is an especially exciting topic for me, as I've been working with the team at metacognitivetherapy.com as the Head Of Content for the past year, creating mental health resources including a website, social media channels, an app and a new podcast that's still to come. MCT might just revolutionize how we treat mental health disorders.I'm joined by Clinical Psychologist Sunniva Itland, founder of one of Norway's largest private psychology clinics and co-founder of metacognitivetherapy.com, to unpack this transformative therapy that's changing lives worldwide. This is for anyone who hasn't found a therapy or modality that's really working to improve their mental health. In this episode, he asks a question many of us can relate to: how can I break free from negative thinking patterns? How can we shift from negative thinking to a more realistic and positive outlook? The recovery journey can sometimes feel overwhelming, and it is not uncommon to occasionally feel stuck in old thinking and behavior patterns. By cultivating self-awareness and challenging those limiting beliefs, we can gradually move from a mindset of negativity to one that embraces possibility. It takes effort and intention, but every step forward opens the door to new perspectives and greater mental clarity. Lance Burdett, author of Dark Side of the Brain, explains why teens generate unhelpful thoughts and how we can reframe anxious thinking by getting comfortable with discomfort. If you've enjoyed Talking to Teens, we'd love if you could leave us a five-star rating, and if you have time, a review! Full Show NotesRaising teenagers can feel like navigating an emotional minefield blindfolded. Their moods swing rapidly from joyful to gloomy, their friendships feel fleeting, and their interests change every five minutes. Meanwhile, the pressure to get good grades, gain college acceptance and determine their entire future weighs heavily on their shoulders. It's no wonder teens get overwhelmed by this cocktail of hormones, peer pressure and looming adulthood. Their brains are firing on all cylinders, trying desperately to make sense of it all. Often, this neural chaos manifests as worry, anxiety, negative thought patterns and even depression. So how can we help teens move through this rocky passage of life? How can we get them to open up about their mental struggles instead of shutting down? Most importantly, how can we empower them to reframe unhelpful thoughts and take control of their own wellbeing? To gain some perspective, we're speaking with Lance Burdett, a former police crisis negotiator turned adolescent mental health expert. Lance has worked extensively with teens and parents to help them understand the “Dark Side of the Brain” – the automatic negative thought patterns that often arise during times of stress. In his book Dark Side of the Brain and on today's episode, Lance is explaining the science behind our brain's threat detection system that generates needless worry. He's also revealing why it's okay for teens to admit they're not okay – as long as they ask for help afterward. We discuss how parents can model self-care, help teens reframe anxious thoughts and teach kids to get comfortable with discomfort. Why Our Brains Make Sh*t UpThe human brain developed mainly to keep our ancestors alive on the African savanna over two million years ago. This means our brains are wired first and foremost for survival, not happiness, Lance explains. When our ancestors encountered threats like predators, adverse weather or lack of resources, their brains kicked into high alert, pumping out adrenaline and cortisol to ready the body for fight or flight. Unfortunately, our modern brains can't tell the difference between a lion attack and a mean comment on Instagram. So teens often experience an exaggerated stress response to non-life-threatening issues like peer drama or academic pressure. This is why teens frequently catastrophize small problems, assume the worst and spiral into intense worry, Lance says. Their brains are simply acting on evolutionary impulses that once kept humans safe – but now cause needless stress. Understanding the brain's tendency to “make shit up” can help teens reframe anxious thoughts as just their brains being overprotective. It's Okay to Say “I'm Not Okay”Parents often tell struggling teens that “it's okay not to be okay” to encourage them to open up about their troubles. But Lance warns that this mantra can be dangerous if left by itself, as it makes mental distress seem permissible. Instead, he advocates adding a second half – “it's okay to say I'm not okay...as long as I ask for help afterward.”The most vital step for teens is the help-asking, Lance stresses. Admitting one is not okay is only the first move. What matters next is having teens reach out to friends, family members, counselors or crisis lines to get the support they need.Lance explains that previous generations hid mental health struggles due to stigma. But today's teens can be more open about feeling depressed, anxious, overwhelmed or suicidal – on the condition that they let caring adults know they need support. Saying “I'm not okay” is the starting point, not the solution itself.Running Towards DiscomfortAs parents, we often try to smooth out every bump in the road for our teens to give them comfortable, happy lives. But Lance argues that facing difficulty is how teens build grit and perseverance. He uses the mantra “run toward the fire” to illustrate that teens should challenge themselves and even pursue discomfort - not despite their anxiety, but because of it.Lance encourages parents to step back from constantly intervening on a teen's behalf with teachers and coaches. By facing problems head-on, teens gain confidence handling difficult situations. Start small by encouraging a shy teen to order their own food at a restaurant, Lance suggests. Taking ownership of tiny challenges gives teens courage to handle bigger hardships down the road.Discomfort also breeds self-awareness, Lance explains. Trying new things pushes teens outside their comfort zones where they can gain insight about their skills, values and preferences. Lance suggests parents promote diverse activities to acquaint teens with unfamiliar peers and experiences. Pushing boundaries expands their worldviews - which leads to personal growth. In the Episode...My conversation with Lance was incredibly eye-opening. On top of the topics above, we also discuss:Why teens desperately need more sleepHow to reframe suicidal thoughtsWhy goals and worry aren't the enemyHow parents can model self-care Check out Lance's website at lanceburdett.com to learn more! Chapter 13 of Star Wars: Heir to the Empire (1991) (EU: 9 ABY) by Timothy Zahn. The Story So FarWhile looking for hints on Dagobah on how best to train the next generation of Jedi, Luke Skywalker finds a strange device in the Dark Side Cave outside Yoda's hut. This hint points him to Lando Calrissian and his path converges with Leia Organa-Solo and Han Solo as they head to the Athega system. After two foiled kidnappings on separate diplomatic missions, the couple are looking to get help outside New Republic jurisdiction. Meanwhile, Grand Admiral Thrawn's schemes are coming to a head as he has allied himself with Master Joruus C'baoth, clone and Dark Jedi. Captain Pelleaon devises a plan to disseminate information that might lure Luke to C'baoth instead of sending more noghri to capture him. All paths converge over Nkllon just as Luke and the Millenium Falcon arrive. Thrawn's satisfaction at the successful acquisition of 51 mole miners is overshadowed by C'baoth's declaration of making contact with Luke. Do you struggle with OCD? According to the World Health Organization, it is one of the top ten most debilitating disorders, but it is one of the most misdiagnosed. This means that many people with this disorder aren't getting the help they need. In this episode of From Survivor to Thriver, we have a special two-part episode with Zach Westerbeck, where we talk about the things that people don't know or understand about OCD, what it actually is, the truth about intrusive thoughts, and so much more. Zach Westerbeck is a Mental Health advocate, National speaker, College Success Coach, and author of “You're Not Alone”, who was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder in 2016. Life is Unfair! Let's Talk About It! | Life Coach Amber Lynn

In today's podcast we are learning what it means to hold space for other people. Lately a common theme I see with my clients is this sense of needing to make other people feel better. So often we take on the responsibility to make other people feel a certain way… Sometimes this comes from a place of love (we just want them to not feel the way they feel)Sometimes this comes from a place of control (it makes us feel so uncomfortable when they feel this way so we need to make it stop)Sometimes this comes from a place of selfishness ( we want to feel better about something so we need them to feel better)So I want to teach you all a few things People are allowed to feel their feelingsPeople are allowed all the time they want not just need but want to take to process their feelingsPeople are allowed to not always be happy, joyous, content, etc it's actually normal and apart of the human experiencePeople are allowed to have their thoughts about your actions even if you didn't do whatever the thing is on purpose, it is their thoughts that create their feelings, and they are allowed those, it is not your job to control or change their thoughtsOf course you can apologize when you “hurt” someone's feelings or cause negative emotions, but you have to be doing it for yourself- not for them to change how they are feeling because you are not in control of themI also want to take about what I learned from my Teacher's Brooke Castillo and Kara Loewentheil- they taught me the concept of the Manual When we have a miscommunication with someone- we hurt their feelings or they quote hurt ours we have an internal manual that states what the other person should doThey should forgive me right away or they should change how they feel immediatelyThey should “know where we are coming from”Whenever we are “shoulding” someone else we need to take a look at our thoughtsWhy is it so important that they change the way they feel right away? What are we making their feelings mean about us? What are we making it all mean? What we have to learn to do is hold space for other people, their thoughts, their feelings and their opinions:What this looks like is creating space outside of us. Picture yourself with a belt on with water bottle holders, and inside each of those water bottles is the space for someone else.

I don't know about you, but now that it is spring, I have been spending a lot of time in my garden recently. This has really got me thinking about the metaphor that I got from a mentor of mine that our minds are like gardens. If left unattended, weeds and plants can grow and sprawl out in ways we never imagined, causing damage and preventing our gardens from being what we truly want them to be. In the same way, old thoughts and beliefs, if not tended to, can also have this same effect. In this episode, let's investigate how unchecked thoughts can hold us back and how we can begin to plant new thoughts in order to live the pleasured life we desire. This is exactly what I help my clients do in Better Sex in 90 Days. With my step-by-step process, we weed out the thoughts that we no longer want to believe and create a fertile ground to get to planting the thoughts that will create the sex life we want to have. Think about the garden of your mind when it comes to your pleasure and your sexuality. There is a whole bunch of shit that is in there that you had no say in, whatsoever. Whether they were planted on purpose, or through societal pressures, they are there. So tending to your mind and weeding out the thoughts that do not serve you and hold you back is key in order to create the results you want.To help other women find this show and create more pleasure in their lives, leave a review! Tom Bunn has just released Panic Free: The 10-Day Program to End Panic, Anxiety, and Claustrophobia. Panic and its close cousins’ anxiety and claustrophobia have long been problems without reliable solutions. In most cases, the estimated six million Americans who suffer from a panic disorder receive only marginal relief from psychotherapy ( usually cognitive behavioral therapy), medication, or the two combined. After years of working to help suffers, licensed therapist and author Tom Bunn discovered a highly effective solution that utilizes a part of the brain not affected by the stress hormones that bombard a person experiencing panic. This “unconscious procedural memory” can be programmed to control panic by preventing the release of stress hormones and activating the parasympathetic nervous system.  It sounds complicated but is not, requiring just 10 days and no drugs or doctors. We talk about How stress hormones affect anxietyHow to link the stressor to a calming imageAgoraphobia and panic attacksHow relationships affect our stress and panic levelsCommon symptoms of panicHow to fly panic freeHow to redirect anxiety-producing thoughtsWhy drugs do not work long termHow imagined danger can cause panic more than a real dangerThe most important thing a person in the midst of panic needs to knowHow oxytocin works with panic Panic Free offers readers a step-by-step solution for training the brain to stop panic before it starts.   In parts 1–3 of the book, Bunn explains the physiological and psychological mechanisms that lead to panic. Then, in part 4, he leads the reader step by step through a ten-day program to establish automatic control of panic, so they can learn to put the frustration, worry, and distress of panic and claustrophobia behind them, both in the air and on the ground. Tom Bunn, LCSW, is the author if Panic Free: The 10 Day Program to End Panic, Anxiety, and Claustrophobia, which is the result of his many years addressing flight panic in his role as an airline pilot. He is also a licensed therapist, regular contributor to Psychology Today, and a former U.S. Air Force captain who flew the Air Force’s first supersonic jet fighter, the F-100. www.panicfree.com. www.fear of flying.com
