How difficult is it to power a boat just with electricity? Is an electric outboard as reliable as a fossil-fuel one when taken out to sea? And just how much better is an electric engine for reducing pollution and noise? Around the world there are tens of millions of small boats, from high-performance luxury craft to workhorse fishing vessels, nearly all of which run on fossil-fuel powered engines. But with the rapid advancements in electric vehicles, a small group of companies are now turning their minds to cracking the boating problem, inventing electric engines that are quieter, less polluting, and can deliver just the same performance. In Europe, perhaps the best known is the German company Torqeedo. Founded in 2004, they've sold a quarter of a million electric motors to date, and this year, were acquired by Yamaha Motors. Norwegian company Evoy have recently joined forces with Vita, a UK-Monaco based company, and Candela, another Scandinavian boat builder, are revolutionising engines and boats with their hydrofoiling concept. This week on Cleaning Up, Baroness Bryony Worthington speaks with Ben Sorkin, CEO and co-founder of Flux Marine, headquartered in Newport, Rhode Island. Flux Marine are hoping to take on the US market with their customizable electric propulsion systems and have a 40,000 square foot factory in Rhode Island. Bryony asks Ben how his electric engines compete on cost and performance, what Flux Marine's scale-up plans are, and why it's so much harder to electrify a boat than a car. Kaiser Friedrich, a vessel steeped in history, was built in 1886. It recently marked its return to service with a ceremonial christening in central Berlin. In a bid to preserve its legacy, its owners refitted the historic 30-meter vessel with a modern, emission-free electric drive system by the world leader in electric mobility on the water, Torqeedo. Kaiser Friedrich, Berlin's oldest passenger vessel goes green The Kaiser Friedrich, a twin-screw steamship, plied Berlin's waters for almost 80 years before it was decommissioned in 1967 and converted into offices and residential space. In 1986, the German Museum of Technology purchased the 100-ton boat and restored it to its original appearance. For several years, the Kaiser Friedrich once again delighted guests with historical city tours until its engines, which used over 150 liters of diesel per hour, made operation both ecologically and economically unviable. The museum reclaimed the boat in 2012 and started the search for Kaiser Friedrich's next chapter. In 2022, Volker Marhold and Julius Dahmen, who both have experience converting historic boats to electric propulsion, purchased the Kaiser Friedrich. In close collaboration with Torqeedo's Customized Solutions team, the conversion to an ultra-efficient electric drive system with twin Deep Blue 50 kW inboard motors and a 400 kWh Deep Blue battery bank was expertly completed by the Tangermünde Shipbuilding and Development Company in Genthin, Germany. Starting on 13 May, Berliners and visitors to the "Athens on the Spree" can enjoy an eco-friendly city tour on board this legendary passenger vessel. At night, the city's most famous boat transforms into a floating beer garden during the 3.5-hour Old Berlin Beer Evening. Online booking is available at www.kaiserfriedrich.berlin. Mr. Dahmen, co-owner of the 138-year-old vessel and operator of Berliner Welle, a company that provides a variety of historic boats for excursions and events, said: "Whisper-quiet, environmentally conscious and free of local emissions, the Kaiser Friedrich will again be available to the people of Berlin. This is the third Berliner Welle excursion boat that we have converted to Torqeedo electric drives, and we look forward to continuing our collaboration." "The Kaiser Friedrich is a longtime maritime landmark of the city," said Mr. Marhold. "And now it is also a symbol of transformation towards the mobility of the future. And what a wonderful future for Berlin's oldest passenger vessel, which can now once again welcome passengers to celebrate life with them while enjoying breathtaking views of our beautiful city." "Torqeedo's electric drive and energy management systems for commercial vessels are transforming the world's waterways," said Fabian Bez, CEO of Torqeedo GmbH. "Major cities like Berlin are taking measures to reduce boating and shipping's ecological, health and climate impacts. But it's not just happening in urban areas: Lake Constance is working toward a holistic decarbonization strategy, and we see similar efforts implemented around the globe." "An electrification project of this size and historical significance is an important step forward," continued Bez. "Commercial vessels of all sizes can be cleaner, quieter, and healthier for our natural and human environments. The technology is here today. It's time to go electric." About Torqeedo: Torqeedo is the market leader for electric mobility on the water. Founded in 2005 in Starnberg, the company develops and manufactures electric and hybrid drives from 0.5 to 100 kW for commercial applications and recreational use. Torqeedo products are characterized by an uncompromising high-tech focus, maximum efficiency and complete system integration. www.torqeedo.com See more breaking stories here.

Every year, an estimated 14 million tons of used plastics end up in the world's waterways and, finally, the ocean. These plastics entangle wildlife, break down into hard-to-remove microplastics, and litter our human and natural environments. Torqeedo GmbH, the world's leading manufacturer of electric and hybrid drives for the marine market, is taking the next step toward cleaner waterways and a more sustainable marine industry by diverting and integrating ocean-bound plastics into its emission-free boating products. Torqeedo has established a new Advanced Engineering Team that, among other tasks, explores alternative materials to further minimize the environmental impact of its recreational and commercial marine products. The Team is testing recycled ocean-bound PET and PP plastic pellets, which are estimated to reduce the source material's CO2 impact by more than 80% and are very close in quality to virgin plastic due to strict processes and advanced recycling equipment. Prototype propellers to be made from ocean plastics "The typical way to integrate new materials is to start with a small percentage - maybe with just 10 or 20% recycled content. However, we decided to aim higher. We made our prototype propellers from 100% recycled ocean plastics, and we're thrilled to report that they surpassed all benchmarks in the first round of environmental and stress testing. After some slight adjustments, we will produce the next prototypes in Torqeedo orange. These will be very similar to the propellers that are in use today," said Florian Deger, who leads the project within Torqeedo's Advanced Engineering Team. "It feels good to hold one of the prototypes in my hands and know we are keeping plastic bottles and pollution out of the waters we all love to explore on our boats." "While integrating ocean plastics into our products is just one step of many as Torqeedo helps to build a more sustainable marine industry, it's also much more significant than just diverting plastic bottles," said Fabian Bez, CEO of Torqeedo GmbH. "We're helping to develop a circular plastic economy and transforming used plastics from trash to treasure. Collecting used plastic for recycling only becomes economically viable when there is a market for the recycled material, and we're proud to lead the way in closing the loop. Many manufacturers hesitate to use recycled materials based on outdated perceptions of inferior material quality. Torqeedo believes that a circular economy for plastics can be established today without negatively impacting product performance and durability," Bez continued. "If the next testing rounds are as successful as expected, the first Torqeedo products containing ocean-bound plastics will hit the market within the next year." Bez concluded: "This is exactly why we established our new Advanced Engineering Team at Torqeedo. Every step we take toward lowering boating's environmental and climate impact improves our human and natural environments and helps to preserve our boating lifestyle." About Torqeedo: Torqeedo is the market leader for electric mobility on the water. Jeff Little with Torqeedo is my guest in this episode. Jeff is one of those guys that you just want to hang out and fish with! His personality is contagious but his knowledge and whole perception when it comes to fishing is on another level. Jeff and I chat it up about his Youtube channel "The Little Stuff" and he shares some great tips on fishing heavy brush. We also talk about the art of "dead sticking" a bait, his passion for water trailblazing, and the perks of running an inflatable kayak... and of course I couldn't do an episode with Jeff without chatting about torqeedo motors!Go subscribe to his YouTube channel:https://youtube.com/c/TheLittleStuff“Love Your Neighbor and Go Catch Some Fish”
It is an incredibly exciting time in the boating industry. We have seen two years of record sales, dealers are selling production slots because they can't get inventory fast enough, more Americans than ever are enjoying time on the water with family and friends, and the pace of innovation continues to accelerate which is providing a better and more frictionless boating experience. Within the innovation category, electric propulsion is experiencing an influx of investment, and new motor options are steadily hitting the market. General Motors recently invested $150 million into Pure Watercraft. ePropulsion just announced a Series B raise in the tens of millions of dollars. Arc electric boats has raised over $30 million with investors including actor Will Smith, music mogul Sean Combs, and NBA superstar Kevin Durant. Torqeedo continues to impress, recently winning METSTRADE's Boat Builders Award in collaboration with Groupe Beneteau's Excess brand and mobility technology company ZF. I enjoyed speaking recently with Ben Sorkin, founder of Flux Marine. Ben grew up boating on our home lake in upstate NY, Lake George, which has me even more excited about what he is doing. Ben has been able to merge his passion for boating with his passion for tinkering into an exciting start up career. After stints interning at Tesla and working full time designing electric systems at Navatek, plus a decade of planning and researching electric motors on his own, Ben co-founded Flux Marine with the goal of revolutionizing electric propulsion in the marine environment. It was a great time to catch up with Ben as he and his team recently took home two big awards at the Newport boat show, Best Green Product and the Best New Boating Operation, Maintenance or Safety Product. Ben and I discussed how he got his boating and fix-it start, the benefits and challenges of electric boating, we got into the weeds a bit about battery technology and talked about the power their outboards will be brining to the market. Full disclosure, I am an investor in Flux marine and will be purchasing one of their motors to use in our Freedom Boat Club fleet this coming year. Enjoy the conversation!

There have been some extremely exciting developments in the electric boating space in the past year. PURE Watercraft raised over $37million to continue their expansion. Vision Marine had a successful IPO. Torqeedo delivered its 100,000th motor. And a variety of smaller companies are making strong plays as the space grows. While the momentum is exciting, it is clear there is still a long way to go to make electric a widely adopt way to power a boat. I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Graham Balch, Managing Broker of Green Yacht Sales. Graham is an avid sailor and joined the boating industry after stints as a consultant, educator, getting his MBA and then shifting course and starting in the brokerage business before launching his own venture. Before striking off on his own, Graham distinguished himself in the brokerage world with a variety of performance awards, including Highest number of sailboat sales out of 300 sales reps nationwide. Green Yachts began in 2019 and is dedicated to supporting the electric boating community on the water by selling, servicing, and advocating electric powered boats. Green Yachts aspires to helping customers who want the benefits of electric propulsion while enjoying inspiring, well-made, award-winning boats. I learned a lot from Graham and love his strategy of making sure people who do go electric are successful with it. This means making sure they have not only the right motor, but the right boat, the right technical skills, and the right expectations. Graham and I discussed what drove him to focus on electric boating, design and technological advances and needs, what consumers can look for in the future, and more. Enjoy!
Show #672 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 20th January 2020. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. Welcome to a new Patreon PRODUCER MARTIN DUNNE FIAT 500 EV SPIED WITH PRODUCTION BODY FOR THE FIRST TIME "For the 2020 model year, the Fiat 500 is no longer available in the United States. In Europe, however, the supermini just got its first hybrid version and is now officially Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ first small mild hybrid. Later this year, an all-new, all-electric 500 will be launched and we now have the first spy photos showing the production body of the car" according to Athony at Motor1.com: "a very early prototype of the EV still featuring many false body panels. Still, the overall shape and size appear to be identical to today’s model. The heavy concealment also covers the taillights and headlights but these appear to be the final production units, not just temporary replacements - - underneath the skin, the next-gen 500 will be a completely new car riding on a new architecture. The first to arrive will be the zero-emission version with an upgraded powertrain, followed by the conventional combustion-powered models. According to the latest gossip, Fiat will reveal the all-new 500e during the 2020 Geneva Motor Show in March. Given the early stage of development as evident by this prototype though, we won’t be surprised if the debut is postponed for a later date." https://www.motor1.com/news/393773/fiat-500-electric-spied/ NISSAN LEAF SALES HIT 450,000 "Nissan LEAF recently reached a cumulative sales milestone of 450,000 (since December 2010). We learned about the new milestone from one of the latest press releases. The precise date of achieving 450,000 is not known (it could be December 2019)." according to InsideEVs: "Nissan called the LEAF "the world's most popular EV with 450,000", but we are just weeks from the switch for the first position, as the Tesla Model 3 is outselling the LEAF significantly (about 448,634 Model 3 were sold by the end of 2019)." Between October to December 2019, Tesla produced a total of almost 105,000 vehicles. Over a 13 week quarter it's an average of 8,076 per week. Or about 22,000 so far in 2020 if you assume none were made on the 1st Jan. https://insideevs.com/news/393890/nissan-leaf-sales-450000/ TWITTER USER GETS MODEL Y TOUR FROM EMPLOYEE Muchael Hughes on Twitter says: "Model Y sighting second day in a row. Got to talk and see the entire inside (no pics by request). Car will be in Jay Leno show soon! Amazing layout/ storage space & seating. Got to sit in it." "It did feel a bit wider in the back seat to me but if so only a bit. We have two kid car seats in the 3 so I paid attention to what it would be like in the Y. However, if it is wider it’s only a bit." "After getting back into my 3 it was a big difference." "There is a button in the back that auto folds the back seats. Kinda power folding." "Model three seats in the model Y just on risers. So you sit much higher" "Oh and the full glass roof without the cross beam was epic. Back seat driving just got an upgrade" TESLA CHINA IS SUBTLY FLEXING THE MIC MODEL 3'S STELLAR BUILD QUALITY "High-quality images of a recently-delivered Made-in-China Model 3 sedan have proven that potentially lower labor costs do not result in inferior products." writes TEslarati today: "The latest photos of the MIC Model 3 shared by Tesla Model S and X owner and Twitter user Ray4Tesla featured immaculately-finished and perfectly-aligned panels and trims of a blue all-electric sedan. If Tesla’s Gigafactory 3 in Shanghai will consistently produce top-quality vehicles, the mass-produced Model 3 sedan may indeed become a cash cow for the electric car maker in the biggest automotive market in the world." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-china-build-quality/ PARKING AT ELECTRIC CHARGING BAYS COULD SOON BE ILLEGAL "Traditional vehicles will soon be banned from parking anywhere near electric car charging stations in a major crackdown." reports Luke Chillingswroth for The Express newspaper: "urrently, there is no legal law surrounding parking near the charging points with electric car owners often forced to wait for vehicles to move out of the way so they can charge their cars.Fully-electric vehicles may also be restricted from parking in the charging bays unless they are topping up their cars. The new change comes into effect in a bid to create more available charging space for growing demand. Motorists will not be allowed to return to the charging bays within two hours and road users will not be able to use the electric facilities as free parking bays." All-Electric Mercedes-Benz eEconic Is Coming "Mercedes-Benz announced a new all-electric truck model - the Mercedes-Benz eEconic (an electric version of Mercedes-Benz Econic), which will be based on the Mercedes-Benz eActros." reports InsideEVs:" The Econic is well suited especially for waste-collection but it might be used also in other inner-city traffic applications. The Econic is well suited especially for waste-collection but it might be used also in other inner-city traffic applications." https://insideevs.com/news/393591/electric-mercedes-benz-eeconic/ TESLA'S ACQUIRES GIGAFACTORY 4 LAND "Tesla (TSLA.O) has agreed to buy a property on the outskirts of Berlin, bringing it a step closer to opening its first European factory, local authorities said on Sunday." in a Reuters report: "Tesla’s board of directors approved a purchase agreement with the state of Brandenburg on Saturday to acquire a 300-hectare property, Brandenburg government spokesman Florian Engels said in a statement. The state parliament’s finance committee had already approved the sale on January 9. The property is in a designated industrial area and is being checked for weapons from World War II as there are most likely unexploded U.S. bombs still in the ground, he added. Politicians, unions and industry groups have welcomed Tesla’s move which is expected to create up to 7,000 jobs in Brandenburg." https://www.reuters.com/article/us-tesla-gigafactory-germany/tesla-moves-a-step-closer-to-opening-first-european-factory-with-german-property-deal-idUSKBN1ZI0MV TORQEEDO AND ZF TO COOPERATE ON MARINE VESSELS "Torqeedo and ZF have agreed to cooperate on electric systems for sailing yachts and passenger ships. ZF’s steerable sail drives will be integrated into Torqeedo’s Deep Blue electric drive system." according to electrive: "The companies plan to launch their first products on the market by the end of this year. In sailing yachts, for example, of up to 36 metres in length, the diesel generator is only to serve as a reserve unit. During sailing, the manoeuvrable ZF drive is to be used as a generator, the electricity is then stored in the Torqeedo batteries and managed by the Deep Blue system – for example, for the e-drive during running/manoeuvring or the power supply onboard. The ZF system is available with 50 or 100 kW drive power." https://www.electrive.com/2020/01/20/torqueedo-and-zf-to-cooperate-on-marine-vessels/ " WATCH JEFF BEZOS DRIVE AMAZON’S NEW ELECTRIC RICKSHAW "Following a successful pilot across several cities, Amazon India has announced that by 2025, its delivery fleet will include 10,000 electric vehicles." says electrek: "Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos is currently in India and enjoyed trying out the electric rickshaws himself. Amazon says it is “working with several Indian OEMs to build a fleet of vehicles that ensure sustainable and safe deliveries of customer orders.” https://ww.electrek.co/2020/01/20/watch-jeff-bezos-drive-amazons-new-electric-rickshaw/#aprd RENAULT ZOE WINS 2019 EV MODEL TROPHY IN GERMANY "The German plug-in electric passenger vehicle market ended the year on fire, with registrations more than doubling in December, to 11,328 registrations. Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) were up 198% year over year (YoY), pulling the market up significantly and balancing the 2019 BEV/PHEV share to 58% BEV (fully electric) vs. 42% PHEV (51% / 49% in December)." writes CleanTechnica: "The PEV share climbed to 4% in December, with BEVs alone hitting 2%, while the final plug-in vehicle (PEV) share for 2019 ended at a record 3% (1.8% BEVs).the Renault Zoe managed to squeeze out the BMW i3 by just 49 units, with the French hatchback repeating its 2018 performance, in which it also won the #1 title, after two consecutive years as second best." VOLKSWAGEN CLAIMS ID.3 COST 40% LESS TO BUILD THAN E-GOLF "According to Reuters, Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess told investors this week that the ID.3 costs 40% less to build than the E-Golf. That is an enormous reduction and one of the reasons why Volkswagen says the ID.3 will retail for about the same money as a well equipped Golf Diesel. It is the secret sauce that will allow the company to meet its goal of selling millions of electric cars." so says CleanTechnica: "The ID.3 will start at around €30,000 in Europe. The first edition version with more range and a more powerful motor will go for about €40,000. But Volkswagen has plans for electric cars that will sell for as little as €20,000" https://cleantechnica.com/2019/11/19/volkswagen-claims-id-3-cost-40-less-to-build-than-e-golf/ VW ID.3 1ST COSTS 50,000 EUROS BEFORE OPTIONS ID.3 1ST - Full Comfort Starting price: less than 40,000 € (less state funding) ID.3 1ST Plus - The Stylish Starting price: less than 46,000 € (less state funding) ID.3 1ST Max - High Tech - All In With its premium equipment and state-of-the-art high-tech features, the ID.3 1 ST Max. VOLKSWAGEN EXTENDS PRODUCTION OF ID.3 DRESDEN "Volkswagen will assemble its ID.3 EV at the Gläserne Manufaktur in Dresden in addition to the Zwickau plant. The ID.3 is the first model in the latest generation that Volkswagen is putting on the road under its global electric offensive." according to Green Car Congress: "Following on from Zwickau, Dresden now becomes the second assembly plant in Germany for the ID.3. The first vehicles from the MEB family are scheduled to leave the assembly line in Dresden from fall 2020. The plant could possibly also assemble further models from the ID. family at a later point in time. https://www.volkswagenag.com/en/news/2019/11/the-id-3-to-be-assembled-in-the-glaeserne-manufaktur-in-dresden-.html TESLA BIG BATTERY ADDS NEW CAPACITY "French renewable energy and storage developer Neoen has confirmed that the so-called Tesla big battery at Hornsdale in South Australia will get a 50 per cent lift in capacity, and add new innovations and services that will help pave the way for the state to reach its goal of “net 100 per cent renewables”." according to reneweconomy.com.au: "the battery – officially known as the Hornsdale Power Reserve – will be the first in Australia to provide digital – or “virtual” – inertia to the grid, an important network service previously only delivered only by synchronous machines (coal, gas and hydro). The addition of hundreds of new Tesla Powerpack batteries – at a cost of $71 million – will add 50MW/64.5MWh capacity to the existing facilities of 100MW/129MWh, lifting its capacity by 50 per cent and reinforcing its ranking as the biggest lithium-ion battery in the world. Neoen noted that in its first full year of operation, the battery saved consumers more than $50 million, and these savings would continue to grow once the new addition was in place in 2020. It also earned a profit of $22 million in its first full year of operations." https://reneweconomy.com.au/tesla-big-battery-adds-new-capacity-and-services-on-march-to-100pct-renewables-grid-55121/ ZF DEVELOPS ELECTRIC DRIVE FOR SAILING YACHTS "ZF has developed an electric drive system for sailing yachts. For this purpose, the German supplier is installing an electric motor with a maximum output of 125 kW, which is connected to ZF’s steerable Steerable Pod Propulsion System (SPP)." writes electrive: "With the electric auxiliary drive instead of a diesel engine, the sailing yacht can travel emission- and noise-free when taking off and mooring – and thus also call at ports that remain closed to yachts with conventional drive due to environmental regulations." https://www.electrive.com/2019/11/19/zf-develops-electric-drive-for-sailing-yachts/ TORQEEDO RELEASES NEW PRODUCTS AND ACHIEVES MAJOR MILESTONES Torqeedo will celebrate its 15th year of technology innovations and deliver its 100,000th electric drive for the worldwide marine industry in the coming year. Torqeedo offers a broad product line of outboards, inboards and saildrives ranging from 0.5 to 100 kW with high-capacity lithium batteries and power-management systems. Torqeedo will launch two new motor models in 2020: a new professional-grade Ultralight motor for serious kayak anglers, and a 20-hp equivalent Cruise 10.0 T outboard with tiller steering. Also coming in 2020 are new fast chargers and new solar charge controller for the Power 48-5000 series of lithium batteries. Torqeedo’s high-power Deep Blue system is getting important improvements with quieter-than-ever outboards and seamless integration of joysticks, third-party throttles and wireless controls. https://www.torqeedo.com/en/news-and-press/blog/blog-2019-11-18.html BUGATTI CONSIDERING ELECTRIC FOUR-SEATER AS SECOND MODEL "Bugatti's long-rumored additional model could run on electricity rather than gasoline, according to a recent report. The company is tentatively planning a downward expansion without diluting its image." reports AutoBlog: "The company isn't interested in chasing volume with an alternative to the Volkswagen GTI. Instead, Bloomberg wrote it's envisioning an electric four-seater priced between 500,000 and one million euros, sums that represent about $555,000 and $1.1 million, respectively. Bugatti CEO Stephan Winkelmann told the publication that convincing parent company Volkswagen to fund the model requires a "hard fight," however." https://www.autoblog.com/2019/11/19/bugatti-electric-four-seater-report PORSCHE TAYCAN DELIVERIES ARE DELAYED "A recent post on the Facebook Porsche Taycan Group reveals that the Taycan is now running on an 8- to 10-week delivery delay. A Norwegian reservation holder received an email from the German automaker explaining the situation." says Steven Loveday at InsideEVs: "We've seen multiple EV launches that have proven similar issues. The Audi e-tron has fallen behind numerous times and continues to experience its share of delays. Jaguar has had comparable issues with the I-Pace." https://insideevs.com/news/383171/porsche-taycan-delivery-delay/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK The MYEV.com Question Of The Week… "If you were marketing a for an new EV brand (or Tesla) how would you do it?” I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the 251 patrons of this podcast whose generosity means I get to keep making this show, which aims to entertain and inform thousands of listeners every day about a brighter future.

Claude Beaulac is the VP of Sales and Marketing for the Canadian Electric Boat Company. I spoke with Claude just before it was announced that the CEBC was awarded the ‘Future of the Industry’ award at Quebec’s annual Marina Industry Gala. The Canadian Electric Boat Company manufactures a line of 100% electric boats that do not produce any pollution or emissions. Powered by a lithium battery, CEBC boats can provide eight to twelve hours of use on a single charge. They are completely noiseless, handcrafted with high quality materials, and they even boast in their line the fastest electric boat in the world, the Bruce. Claude has boated around the world throughout his career and currently enjoys his personal boating on a beautiful lake in Canada in a private preserve. We spoke about the boat building process, upcoming shows, how he got involved with the CEBC and more. Enjoy! On boat show strategies.....We want to show the world we can build something different than what is already out there so we bring out the Volt 180 with several different possibilities of power options. We’re really proud of showing it and when we’ve showed it, everybody was impressed and looking forward to trying one. That’s the key to electric boats. People like the idea but didn’t know it existed so they are discovering the idea that it is there today, not just coming in the future. We’ll be at Newport Beach at the end of this month. We have a boat rental business there, the eboat rental. That’s a great location to test and try out all the things that we develop because seasons are better there than here in Montreal. So far we have been the novelty at all the shows. On the electric boat experience.....Everybody gets very surprised because when we get started they feel like we’re drifting. You don’t feel anything or hear anything. It’s a comforting feeling once you’re on the water and know that you have control of the boat and you’re going at the proper speed, and you don’t hear any noise but the water flapping on the boat, and the wind. On hurdles to electric boat adoption.....The first barrier is that people don’t even know that it can be done. That’s 90% of the people that come to us at a boat show. The next one is ‘what’s the autonomy?’. They’ve seen things in electric cars and think that cars need to be charged a lot and they think of the extreme. People think they’re going to be on the water all day and wonder if it is going to last. We tell them it’s going to last eight to twelve hours depending on the speed you run with it and they are flabbergasted. It’s a matter of educating people. On the CEBC product line.....The Quietude and the Fantail are the biggest sellers. In the last four years we’ve seen some Bruce being sold and now we’ve got the Bruce T Version with Torqeedo. The Volt just came out and we’ve sold three so far and are expecting quite a few more as we work with cities who have eco-recreational programs. On boating around the world.....I've traveled quite a bit and got to boat in different cities in Switzerland, Greece, Australia, and China. In my family there were no boats but we had friends with boats, and my first wife had a sailboat we went on quite a bit. Now we have a cottage and have a small boat that we go fishing with. It’s a reserve so it’s a protected area. There’s moose, there’s deer, there’s bears, there’s all sorts of things walking around. We catch a lot of Trout and Pike. On his favorite boating destination.....The Caribbean is a great place to go, when you can see the bottom and all the fish swimming around. Up by our cottage, the water is clear and when the sun is in the right direction, you can see the bottom of the lake in a lot of places. I like to boat in those areas where you can see the marine life underneath you. On his mission at CEBC.....It makes a difference in the world and that was one of my criteria. I want to work for a business that’s going to make a difference in the world. This was a perfect mix. It’s a big challenge which is always what I’ve been looking for in life. We have a plan and we’re acting our plan on a daily basis. On improving standards for eboating.....We’ve met with the people at the NMMA and ABYC to make sure that they put a category for leisure electric boats into their system and that they have rules and regulations to apply to manufacturers so that there are no accidents that happen with electric boats. We want this to be safe. We’re a bunch of people who are concerned about the environment and the safety of people. On what draws people to the water.....I think it’s the pleasure and the freedom that you feel when you are out on the water. You are completely in a different element. When you get onto the water it’s that good feeling that you’re floating and it’s effortless. There are many ways to do it and you have to pick what you feel best with and think about your real need. We hear all the horror stories of people who say 'I loved the boat when I bought it and I loved it when I sold it' because they didn’t buy the right boat for their need. A lot of people buy the lifestyle but never live it. Think about what you’re going to do with it and try it before you buy it. I have enjoyed learning about electric boating through my conversation with Claude and previous conversation with Steve Trkla of Torqeedo. It is exciting to watch the developments in this segment of the industry and the possibilities of environmentally friendly boating continuing to grow will help make our natural waterways cleaner for generations to come!
As climate change becomes a bigger issue for boaters every year (see boat damage from this year's storms as exhibit A), there are many companies looking for solutions that will help slow down this process while also enabling boaters to continue using the waterways in powered vessels. Electric mobility is one of the top solutions and I was fortunate to speak with Steve Trkla, President of Torqeedo Inc. Torqeedo is the market leader for electric mobility on the water. Founded in 2005 in Starnberg, the company develops and manufactures outboards and inboards, electric motors and hybrid drive systems ranging from 1 to 80 hp. There are also all sorts of functional and innovative accessories – from lithium batteries and solar charging equipment to smartphone apps. Steve has been with Torqeedo for a decade and has been responsible for launching Torqeedo products in the North American market, from Travel to Deep Blue. His wide-ranging experience in sales and marketing in the high-tech sector and his excellent feel for trends in the nautical industry have reaped great success for Torqeedo in the USA and Canada. Besides leading the US team and acquiring new customers, Steve has ensured Torqeedo's constant presence in the media in North America and helped us achieve a strong market presence within a short period. Before joining Torqeedo, he worked as sales director for a number of Silicon Valley start-ups, helping them achieve sales and growth. His understanding of IT products led him to Red Oak Marketing, a provider of online marketing strategies in the marine industry. And from there it was just one small step to Torqeedo. Steve and I spoke about when he joined the boating lifestyle, innovations in electric mobility, and some of the ways Torqeedo is leading the charge towards more environmentally friendly boating. On his boating past.....I have not been a lifelong boater. When I went off to college I met a very good friend who was an avid fisherman and boater and I ended up really enjoying it. He had different boating options as our friendship grew but the first time it was a Lund-style fishing boat on Lake Jennie in Minnesota. Later he taught me how to water-ski and after that we did some fishing on Lake Michigan out of Manitowoc-Two Rivers Wisconsin. On learning to handle a boat.....I was always a passenger and it really wasn’t until my younger brother and I bought our first boat together that was the first time that I started driving a boat by myself. It was a Four Winns family style boat. We had that where I boat today which is the Chain O'Lakes about 45 minutes outside of Chicago. It's been since Torqeedo that I really had to learn how to operate a boat on my own. I didn’t take courses. We had several demo boats that we show to customers so more and more I was taking advantage of using the boats. At first, driving and operating the boats was somewhat simple. Learning the etiquette on the water was somewhat simple. Where I found it to be the most nerve-wracking is when you bring it into a dock and need to tie it around other boats and people are watching. And so that took a little more building confidence but each time you get better and better and eventually you get to a point that it becomes second nature. On learning boating etiquette.....The Chain O'Lakes is a great lake to learn etiquette because when you have a series of lakes that’s just 45 minutes outside a city of six million you have one of the most active boating waterways that there is in the country. You learn it quickly - and that is knowing how to show intention when you're on the water and there are lots of different boats on the water, knowing how to keep distances from kayakers and fishermen, knowing what's right and wrong in no wake zones when you're going through the channels. On the growth of the electric mobility market.....It has been an evolution. Back in 2007 when we had our one motor which was the Travel 801, it was a revolution at the time. It was all so new to the marine industry so what you found back then is most of the consumers would come up and go, ‘is that electric’? And a year or two would go by and those same customers would go, ‘that’s the future’. And my favorite part this year was at the Annapolis Boat Show, the amount of customers that were coming to our booth that knew everything about Torqeedo, and how many customers had bought our systems and told us how much they love what we’re doing. It really was a ten year progression of ‘what is this’ to ‘that’s the future’ to ‘its here’. On common misconceptions about electric mobility.....There has always been this term ’Range Anxiety’ – how long and how fast can you really go with an electric motor. Those were the early misconceptions. When people thought of electric motors they thought of the trolling motor market, they didn’t think of it as something that was competing in the horsepower class against the gas motor market. That is changing as technology is continuing to change and electric is so much more mainstream. That is probably the biggest misconception, the speeds and range electric motors can give you. On how marine mobility compares to other markets.....The greatest driver is the auto industry, the second is the e-bicycle market. If you look at marine, the industry and acceptance is matching that of where the auto industry was ten years ago and bicycle industry was five years ago. On technology driving the business.....Over the last two years one of the great innovations and revolutions of the marine industry for electric mobility is the lithium battery technology. We invested in some of the best battery management system technology to ensure that we have the safest units on the market today. We do produce on the low-power range our own lithium batteries. The partnership with BMW has been a wonderful opportunity. We’re able to take their automotive lithium battery technology in the high-power segment and marine grade the battery. You have the shock mitigation, the venting, the waterproofing and the cell management system. On growth opportunities for electric mobility.....We started with the Travel series of motors as recreational solutions. Then we attacked the 'green lake' market with our line of cruise motors. And then we moved into the paddle sports industry with our Ultralight systems. All of that was a retail product. In 2012 we announced our first high power system, the Deep Blue. And we really ventured for the first time into the commercial segment of the market and that’s when our growth took an even steeper increase. Going forward, the significant growth that is expected over the next five years is in the project sales and commercial side. On prop technology as part of the solution.....What we learned from the beginning was that we had such great motor design and such high torque motors we needed to build our prop design to match the power of the motor. So each one of our systems has a unique prop that goes with that system so that we maximize the efficiency of the motor and in some cases we set world records for efficiency in water. On boating advice received and given.....First and foremost, and I've been told this by several people, is to always wear a life jacket. No matter what I do wear my life jacket. The second thing is take care of what you purchase! Editor's Note: I am so excited about the potential Torqeedo has to help make boating a more environmentally friendly activity that we have signed on to become Torqeedo dealers out of our marina. Check out www.torqeedo.com to see if there is an electric marine solution for you!
