On Sunday evening, a radicalized father and son targeted the annual “Chanukah by the Sea” event at Sydney’s Bondi Beach and killed at least 15, after firing some 50 shots at the 1,000-strong crowd. Another 38 people were wounded, including two police officers. This morning, Australian officials confirmed they believe it was “a terrorist attack inspired by Islamic State.” Horovitz updates us on this confirmation and other newly uncovered information about the gunmen's plot. Newly discovered dashcam footage shows one of the increasingly exposed examples of ordinary citizens willing to take on the attackers. Boris and Sofia Gurman confronted the father and son gunmen after the murderous pair parked their ISIS-flag-draped car. Both Gurmans were shot dead. We hear other moving stories of valor. In the wake of the attack — the second-worst mass shooting in Australia’s history -- Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is pushing for stricter gun control. Yesterday, Albanese rejected Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s assertion that his government’s recognition of Palestinian statehood earlier this year “pours fuel” on an “antisemitic fire.” Horovitz explains how many Australian Jews feel government authorities have not done enough to stamp out hatred of Jews in Australia, which has allowed it to fester in the aftermath of October 7. Among his proposals, spelled out in an op-ed on The Times of Israel, is for a large-scale educational reboot to teach children tolerance alongside reading, writing and arithmetic. Finally, we turn to the heartbreaking murder of Rob Reiner and his wife Michele. The Reiners’ son, Nick Reiner, was in police custody Monday for what investigators believe was the fatal stabbing of his parents at their Los Angeles home a day earlier, police said. Horovitz shares until-now unpublished pieces from a The Guardian interview with the director-actor dating from February 2024, in which Reiner stated, "Right now the world is shifting away from Israel – and that to me is very sad." Australia suffered one of the deadliest massacres in its modern history on Sunday when two gunmen opened fire on a Jewish celebration at Bondi beach in Sydney. At least 16 people died, including one of the alleged gunmen, with more than 40 wounded. The victims include a 10-year-old child, a Holocaust survivor and a London-born rabbi. The alleged gunmen behind the attack are a father and son, who are suspected of using legally obtained firearms to commit the massacre. One of the suspects, Naveed Akram, 24, was known to New South Wales police and security agencies. The Australian prime minister, Anthony Albanese, is facing questions about gun law reform and security failings as the country reels from the attack. We begin today under the national and international clouds of mass shootings. At Brown University, multiple people were shot, two have died, and Kash Patel screwed up another investigation. Then, at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach near Sydney, a father and son gunmen killed at least 15 people before a good guy with a gun took some bullets and saved some lives. Australians will tighten gun laws. Bibi Netanyahu hopes to kill more Palestinians. Zohran Mamdani shows the world what to say. And then Rob Reiner and his wife were murdered, probably by their own kid. This is devastating for a number of reasons, especially because Rob Reiner would be the guy with a perfect thing to say on a day like today. It is in times like these we must all remember that Donald K. Trump is the world's most despicable person alive, some say of all time. Donald is losing, becoming weaker, and will continue to lose, which means that everything will become much, much worse. Trump might be gone in the next thirty, forty years or so, therefore every rat in the sack is set on chewing each other's eyes out ASAP.  Someday in the next thirty, forty years, Trump's administrative stays will run out. María Corina Machado is the kind of Nobel Prize winner that Trump would pick, if he ever got tired of picking himself. Machado might get her pick from friendly or not so friendly fire.

Palestinians don't love their families any less than Australians do. Australian lives aren't any more significant or valuable than Palestinian lives. There is no valid reason for the world to have focused any less on the 15 people who were killed in Gaza on March 16 than on the 15 people who were murdered on Bondi Beach. But it did. Police have called it a death investigation into an apparent homicide. Officials have not released more information regarding the circumstances of the deaths. Australian Jews are “shocked but not surprised” by the “horrific” mass shooting on Bondi Beach, which turned a Hanukkah celebration into a tragic massacre, Australian Jewish leader Lynda Ben-Menashe said on the Haaretz Podcast. In the two years since the October 7 attack in Israel, the Australian Jewish community “begged” their government officials to enforce laws against incitement and hate speech, which has led to an unprecedented spike in antisemitic violence. But, she said, the government’s response has been “lip service” but “no real consequences.” “Our prime minister has said that he was distressed and shocked,” said Ben-Menashe, the head of Australia’s National Council of Jewish Women. “The Jewish community has been distressed for the past two years at the lack of action from the government, and also at the growing lack of safety that we have felt. And so we weren't shocked that this happened.” Also on the podcast, Haaretz senior defense analyst Amos Harel reports on the numerous warnings passed by Israeli intelligence agencies to the Australian government, warning of the growing terrorist threats in their country. Harel also commented on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his government’s reaction to the Bondi Beach attack – namely blaming Australia’s leaders for their failure to prevent it. Harel said it was “hard to resist noticing [the] paradox regarding the fact that Israeli ministers were so quick to blame the Australian government for its failures and note their responsibility for what has happened, while they're insisting that Netanyahu holds no blame whatsoever for what happened two years ago” on October 7. On today's podcast: 1) Brown University, mourning two students killed during a shooting rampage Saturday, sent students home and called off final exams, classes and assignments for the fall semester. A blanket of snow covered the campus and downtown Providence, Rhode Island, on Sunday morning as the Ivy League school reeled from its first encounter with mass violence. Students recounted barricading themselves in their homes, waiting out the shelter-in-place orders by huddling together in the dark for hours as a manhunt ensued for the suspect who opened fire as the undergrads were preparing for exams.
