Phillip Securities issued a downgrade for Alphabet (GOOGL) even as it sees positive outcomes from not having to divest Google Chrome. However, a valuation spike prompted concern from the analyst. Most indices closed higher even as seasonal volatility kicked off September trading. Alphabet (GOOGL) closed as one of the SPX's biggest winners, rallying 10% after a U.S. district court judge rules the company can keep its Google Chrome browser. Broadcom (AVGO) jumped on strong earnings and guidance — along with reports that it inked a $10 billion A.I. chip deal with OpenAI. Lululemon (LULU) sold off tremendously when it cut its guidance yet again. Marley Kayden takes investors through a short but busy week on Wall Street.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. The long-time case questioning Google dominance is over. A U.S. judge ruled that Alphabet (GOOGL) will not have to divest its Google Chrome browser, something analysts and investors alike see as a huge win for Alphabet. Jenny Horne talks about the impacts the development has across Wall Street. She also explains why Apple (AAPL) rallied alongside Alphabet. Speaking of Apple, Jenny later talks about Meta Platforms (META) and how it tapped the company's lead A.I. robotics researcher to join the social media conglomerate.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. Alphabet (GOOGL) rallied off a U.S. district court judge ruling that the company can keep its Google Chrome browser. Cory Johnson makes the case that it's bearish for Alphabet. He talks about the lost investment opportunity a divestment may have opened for investors and argues Google's search dominance is still monopolistic in the industry. Cory later talks about the role reports of a Perplexity bid into Chrome had for the development. He also notes a potential Mag 7 partnership that can blossom between Alphabet and Apple (AAPL).======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. September showed volatility early by starting the month on a down day. Headlines on the U.S. Appeals Court did no favors as questions on the legality of tariffs emerges on the Federal level. Right after the closing bell, headlines hit the wire that Alphabet (GOOGL) will not have to sell its Google Chrome browser. OpenAI made headlines on a report that the company seeks to build a 1GW+ data center in India that could be used for Stargate. Kraft Heinz (KHC) closed as the SPX's biggest laggard after announcing plans to split into two separate publicly traded companies. Marley Kayden takes investors through a turbulent start to September.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day. Nvidia's (NVDA) earnings overshadowed Alphabet's (GOOGL) march to new all-time highs. LikeFolio's Megan Brantley notes the Mag 7 company's growth in Google Cloud far outpacing Amazon's (AMZN) AWS and Microsoft's (MSFT) Azure as a leading driver behind the rally. She points to a "vulnerability" in search revenue if Alphabet is forced to divest Google Chrome, adding that Chrome's search dominance is only gaining traction.======== Schwab Network ========Empowering every investor and trader, every market day.Subscribe to the Market Minute newsletter - https://schwabnetwork.com/subscribeDownload the iOS app - https://apps.apple.com/us/app/schwab-network/id1460719185Download the Amazon Fire Tv App - https://www.amazon.com/TD-Ameritrade-Network/dp/B07KRD76C7Watch on Sling - https://watch.sling.com/1/asset/191928615bd8d47686f94682aefaa007/watchWatch on Vizio - https://www.vizio.com/en/watchfreeplus-exploreWatch on DistroTV - https://www.distro.tv/live/schwab-network/Follow us on X – https://twitter.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/schwabnetworkFollow us on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/schwab-network/About Schwab Network - https://schwabnetwork.com/about

Send us a textThis week, Kristen and Jen dive straight into the finance headlines with a M&A story: Perplexity, an AI startup valued at $18 billion, has made a $34 billion all-cash bid for Google Chrome. Kristen unpacks why this is virtually unprecedented in dealmaking, explaining how the size mismatch, lack of financing capacity, and Chrome's not-for-sale status make the offer so unusual. They revisit the AOL–Time Warner merger as the closest (though still imperfect) precedent and debate whether this might be the “canary in the coal mine” for overheated AI valuations.Jen follows with a contrarian take on the Federal Reserve: even if the Fed cuts rates in September as the market expects, long-term interest rates might actually rise. She explains how inflation pressures, market expectations, and a “cash trap” dynamic could lead to higher mortgage rates, an unintended consequence that would frustrate borrowers hoping for relief. The discussion also touches on softening labor market signals, political pressure on the Fed, and why rate policy in a high-inflation environment can move markets in unexpected ways. The episode then shifts to signs of stress in private credit markets, focusing on the rise of “PIK” (payment-in-kind) interest arrangements. Kristin explains how PIK structures work, why an uptick, especially in “bad PIK” where struggling borrowers opt to defer cash interest, can be an early warning for financial trouble, and how this fits into the broader credit cycle. They close with a debate on networking ethics after a viral Reddit thread about circulating analyst email lists, and the importance of genuine, trust-based connections in breaking into competitive industries. For a 14 day FREE Trial of Macabacus, click HERE For 20% off Deleteme, use the code TWSS or click the link HERE! Big news in the tech and marketing world this week. AI search leader Perplexity stunned the industry with a $34 billion offer to buy Google Chrome. Is this just a headline-grabbing PR stunt… or could it actually give Google a way out of its ongoing antitrust mess? Meanwhile, OpenAI is scrambling to turn lemons into lemonade after the botched ChatGPT-5 launch. Did they completely miss the mark with their audience, or has their technology hit a temporary wall — giving Google, Anthropic, X, and others a window to catch up? Over on YouTube, creators who target children are sounding alarms over the platform's new age verification and machine learning plan, which goes into effect this week. Many fear it could hurt discoverability and revenue. Marketing Winners this week include Marketing AI Institute and the sweet, unexpected Oreos/Reese's mashup. Rants and Raves feature the surprisingly catchy Hampton Jitney Bus Song and a look at the Wall Street Journal/McKinsey partnership. ----- This week's sponsor: You don't become the world's most valuable women's sports franchise by accident. Melissa Otto offers her perspective on Perplexity's $34.5 billion bid to buy Google Chrome from Alphabet (GOOGL). "It's definitely going to be a wild one," Melissa says, noting there is no true standard for something like this before. She adds that A.I. has made no lasting threat to Google search revenue, as she discusses how it adds to the antitrust case accusing Alphabet holding a search monopoly. However, Melissa sees the Mag 7 giant as a key A.I. player itself through its cloud business.
