Download the 21 traits of authentic leadership e book It's the end of 2022, and you know what that means — it's goal-setting season. Many of us automotive leaders find our minds wandering this time of year, envisioning all the success that will come our way in 2023 and setting goals to get us there. But the truth is, an estimated 91 percent of people fail to achieve their New Year's resolutions. The biggest reason why? They lack an emotional connection to their goal. Knowing why you want to do something is a huge motivating factor in getting it done. The same applies when leading a team. We in the automotive industry are great at putting together the metrics and the numbers. But achieving success as a leader is also about articulating the why.If you really want to make a change within your company culture and achieve your goals in 2023, simply declaring a goal is not enough. You've got to inspire, you've got to show why a goal is so important and you've also got to break it all down with your team.In this special episode of the Automotive Leaders podcast, you'll learn three things you can do differently in 2023 to ensure success.Themes discussed in this episode: What's a temporal landmark and why they're the perfect time to set new business objectivesWhy we need to look to the past to achieve success in the futureHow to inspire people around your goals and get where you want to goWhy culture and processes are integral to getting things done How language makes a difference when holding your team accountable Featured Expert: Jan Griffiths (Host)What she does: Jan is the co-founder and president of Gravitas Detroit, an organization dedicated to cultivating authentic leadership in the automotive industry by providing courses, workshops, speaking events, and more. She is also the host of The Automotive Leaders PodcastOn leadership: “Leadership is [about] inspiring a team around more than the numbers. To be truly successful and reach the goal of a high-performance team, we have to inspire not only our team, but the people around us.” Episode HighlightsTimestamped inflection points from the show[0:57] The power of the restart: 2023 is about to begin, and you're probably thinking about how you can be a better leader for your team next year. Repeating the same strategies year after year won't generate success. How are you going to do things differently? [3:55] Tip 1: Look in the rearview mirror: Why look back when we want to move forward? Reflecting on your team's 2022 mistakes and accomplishments will go a long way toward ensuring future success — and it keeps your team engaged in the process.[6:56] Tip 2: Ask the question, Where am I going?: Metrics and numbers alone won't help you become a better leader. You need clarity and an emotional connection for your team to understand and execute your goals successfully.[12:48] Tip 3: Articulate how you are going to get there: In the automotive industry, we've got the metrics for everything. But we need to work harder on the ‘how' — how we're going to improve our culture and boost efficiency to achieve our goals.[17:05] Rethink accountability: We need to stop associating accountability with blame and instead with following up on our commitments. Accountability language matters. Be clear, be specific, and don't accept wishy-washy...

So what does the economy look like in the near future for us working class citizens who have to actually work and pay for things with our hard earned money? Have you ever heard the economy works in cycles? Well, it is true, there are good times and bad times; well, it is part of the economic cycle. If you pay attention and are prepared, in most cases you can weather a downturn, even a nasty one, in the economy. In some cases, you can even grow your wealth. The problem is most Americans do not pay attention, we definitely know our politicians don't and spend our tax dollars like drunken sailors. Does that mean we should all do the same?  The second leg in The Three-Legged Stool of The Simple Life is Financial Freedom. The key to Financial Freedom is not following the herd to indentured servitude of lifelong debt. Today Rob Kendall and I discuss, the storm that is coming in the housing market and a future recession. We both firmly believe they are unavoidable, the debt is due and someone is going to have to pay for it! The key is to make the right financial moves, and ignore most of the advice the financial institutions and federal government are telling us, as they do not have your best interests at heart. In this solo episode, Bella explores the depths of RELEASING resentment, anger, and bitterness and why it will free your mind, body, and soul. Forgiveness and letting go have many social, cultural, historical, and even scientific contexts that help us understand how our conditioning may play into whether or not we want to release negative emotions. Listen to learn about these contexts, my personal experience with letting go, and ways that you can move toward the mind-body freedom that comes from releasing, too. "Forgiveness and letting go require you to feel something empathetic toward a human you're convinced is incredibly undeserving… Yet giving it anyway." ‘We have put together a kind of taxonomy of all the types of meetings that happen within AlphaSense. We've tried to step back and say, What's the meeting I have? Now, what's the best mode for doing this meeting?” John Reid-Dodick (JRD) is Chief People Officer of AlphaSense, which is a small giant in the market intelligence field. They use AI-based technology to help professionals make smarter business decisions by delivering insights from an extensive universe of public and private content—including company filings, event transcripts, news, trade journals, and equity research. With his varied background in Human Resources, JRD has become a respected expert on company culture. In this conversation, Scott and JRD dive into why we do the things we do and what value we really drive from the way we work, including:Why the way of the future is fluid working, which embraces the notion that work is something you do, not a place you goWhy some meetings may function best virtually while others are better served with in-person interaction - and how this facilitates more inclusive, and therefore better, meetingsHow culture is shaped regardless of what you do, so as a leader, it's imperative to avoid cultural confetti and instead intentionally create where you do great work and make a great impactWhether you're a long-time TIGNUM client or a new listener to this ThoughtCast, you may be familiar with the concept that if by creating more wagons you can never fall ‘off the wagon'. JRD was our inspiration for that concept. Listen in to find out how you can be a Sustainable High Performer in today's fluid environment, perhaps by adding to your fleet of wagons.

In this episode, I discuss what it means to take a career LEAP.It's the form of career change people talk of most, but also the one most people don't execute on. What happens is that they decide they really don't enjoy their current role, and they want to do something completely different. The problem is that this new role or idea feels so far removed from what they're currently doing that they don't know how they would even begin to make it happen. They also wonder if it really is the right path for them. Making the wrong decision feels scary, especially if you need to invest time, money and resources into it – what if it doesn't work out? In this episode, I discuss the tangible steps you need to take, so that you can make that career LEAP with confidence. What you will learn:How to validate your ideasHow to bridge the gap between where you are and where you want to goWhy sometimes you need to play the long game Other episodes you may enjoy:Episode 146: How To Know What Type Of Career Change To Make- Part 1Episode 147: How To Know What Type Of Career Change To Make- Part 2THIS EPISODE IS BOUGHT TO YOU BY THE CAREER CHANGE MAKER PROGRAMThis episode was brought to you by my signature program, the Career Change Maker Program.
