A retired U.S. Marine Corps fighter pilot and current leadership instructor describes flying the F-16, the F/A-18, the F-22, and the F-35. He provides lessons from instructing at Top Gun, and the important behaviours for leaders. In the news, Boeing is fined for safety violations, the St. Louis strike continues, the NTSB preliminary report describes the air turbulence incident, and the creation of an aerospace hub at a former Air Force Base. Guest Dave Berke is a retired U.S. Marine Corps fighter pilot and current leadership instructor with Echelon Front. Dave is one of the rare few to have flown the F-16, F/A-18, F-22, and F-35. He also served as the Training Officer at TOPGUN, where he led the staff of instructors who trained the students in air combat tactics and leadership under pressure. He spent a year as a ground Forward Air Controller, calling in air strikes and supporting SEALs, Marines, and Soldiers in the Battle of Ramadi in 2006. Dave describes how a Marine pilot ended up flying the F-16 and F-22, and what it's like to fly the F-35B with its STOVL capabilities. He compares different jet fighters he has flown and explains how they are different and how they are similar. We hear Dave's thoughts on ground support aircraft and dedicated aircraft platforms in general. Dave tells us the combat environment is changing and how information and airframe flexibility are key now, as opposed to single-role platforms. Of course, we ask Dave if the Top Gun movies are accurate. His answer is both yes and no, but Top Gun: Maverick is very good from a flying standpoint. Dave tells us the jet fighter career path is more attainable than many people assume. Also, while flying ability is important, being a Top Gun Instructor hinges on being a good teacher. Aviation News FAA proposes to fine Boeing $3.1 million over widespread safety violations Between September 2023 and February 2024, the FAA found hundreds of quality system violations at Boeing's 737 factory in Renton, Washington, and at subcontractor Spirit AeroSystems. The FAA also identified interference with safety officials' independence and proposed a $3.1 million fine, the maximum statutory civil penalty authority consistent with law. The findings include: presenting two unairworthy aircraft to the FAA for airworthiness certificates, failure to follow its quality system rules, and a Boeing employee pressuring another worker to sign off on a non-compliant 737 MAX. Boeing has 30 days to respond. St. Vincent Pallotti said, “Seek God and you will find God. Seek God in all things and youwill find God in all things. Seek God always and you will always find God.” When I was in highschool, this was used as a call and response to get the lunchroom or assembly to be quiet. Inhindsight, it is pretty sad that we took such beautiful words and reduced them to a bit of a Pavlovianresponse to get high schoolers to zip it, but I digress. At the heart of Pallotti's sentiment is this: Godis everywhere (this is the Jesuit side of Pallotti coming out) and all we have to do to find him is openour eyes and our hearts and look for him.I have been sitting with this strange scene that is a mix of a drama movie and spiritualwriting. I imagine two people talking after some form of suffering, maybe it is raining for cinematiceffect, with one looking at the other and saying, “how can you endure _____ and still see love?” Theother person, after a pause, responds, “how can I not? It is like opening your eyes on a clear day andtrying not to see the sunlight. All there is around me is love. Every color, shape, and composite thingradiates the love of God. It is inexplicable, but I can't really explain seeing the light either- it simplyis. And so too, in an even deeper way, is the infinite love of God.” I have not played out the rest ofthe script, but I do not think I will write the whole movie anyways.We live in, to say it in highly a-theological language, a pretty messed up world. War, violence,natural disasters, poverty, and so much more make it hard to watch the news and, somewhatunderstandably, hard for people to look at that seemingly endless void of evil and see a God, letalone the Christian God who is infinite love. And yet, as friends and followers of Jesus, we areinvited to open our eyes and to see love all around us. Yes, it is difficult, but it is necessary when ourcontext is the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ.In the last few weeks, I have faced the loss of a friend, accompanied some of my studentsthrough their own loss, and more of the normal ups and downs of life. It has not been easy, and yetwhen I open my eyes, once the dust settles and I have a chance to remember who I am and where Iam, all I see is love. I am aware, though, that this is a conscious choice. The easiest thing is to see thesuffering and to sit in it. As I said in my last post, suffering is a guarantee in life. If that is all we see,life looks bleak and even meaningless. If we see love, we realize that suffering can have meaning inour lives and that death and sin do not have the final say. In Mark 6:30–56, Jesus feeds thousands with just five loaves and two fish and later walks on water, revealing Himself as the great “I AM.” The disciples had nothing close to enough, but Jesus took what little they offered and multiplied it until all were satisfied. We often feel the same—weak, unprepared, inadequate—but Jesus invites us to bring Him what we have and trust Him with it. A little in His hands is more than enough, for He is the Bread of Life who alone can satisfy our deepest need.

Today,we need to remember as believers, we are at war. We're not at war with people.We're not at war with ideas and philosophies. My friend, we are at war withspiritual forces in the heavenly places. And Paul reminds us of that inEphesians 6:10-18. “We do not wrestle with flesh and blood, but withprincipalities and powers, and spiritual wickedness in the heavenly places”.This spiritual wickedness in the heavenly places, the devil and his forces, areout to rob you. Jesus said, the thief, who is the devil, has come to steal, tokill, and to destroy you.  Thedevil wants you to be robbed of your wealth in Jesus Christ. Now, he can't takethat wealth from you, but he can make you think you do not have access to thatwealth, and for you to feel like you're weak. Even like the people of Israelwhen they were in Egypt, they were stronger and mightier than the Egyptians.But the Pharaoh dealt shrewdly with them, deceived them, and thinking that theywere weaker than the Egyptians, and put them in slavery. And that's what'shappening to believers today. We have lost the sense and the knowledge of ourwealth, our power and strength that we have in Jesus Christ. Inthe Old Testament the people measured God's power by His acts of creation. Pleaseread Isaiah 40. Almost the entire chapter is devoted to God's creative powerand strength. “Who made these things”? God would answer His ownquestion.  "I made these things.I'm the God who created the heavens and the earth, and you need to know who Iam." And the nation of Israel measured His power by His acts ofcreation. They also measured God's power by His acts of power and His miraclesat the Exodus when He delivered the people of Israel out of Egypt. The 10plagues, the parting of the Red Sea, and even the defeat of the enemies in thepromised land. And the people would look back and say, "What a mighty andpowerful God we have."  Buttoday, we can also measure God's power by the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Thepower of His resurrection was not only the fact that Jesus died on the cross,was buried, and that He rose again the third day. And also in the truth thatGod has highly exalted Him when He raised Him from the dead and set Him at Hisheavenly places (vv. 21-22). Jesus is not only our Savior, He is also our Sovereign(Acts 2:25-36). He is the sovereign God. There is no authority, power, human orin the spirit world that's greater than that of Jesus Christ, the exalted Sonof God. He is “far above all” and no future enemy can overcome Himbecause He's been exalted “far above all” powers. Oh, how important itis for us to know this.  Buthow does this apply to you and me today? In Ephesians 1:22-23, Paul explainsthe practical application. Because we are believers, we are in the church,which is Christ's body—and He is the Head. This means that there is a livingconnection between you and Christ. Physically speaking, the head controls thebody and keeps the body functioning properly. Injure certain parts of the brainand you handicap or paralyze corresponding parts of the body. Christ is ourspiritual Head. Through the Spirit, we are united to Him as the members of Hisbody. This means that we share His resurrection, ascension, and exaltation.Apart from this power, we cannot draw on our great wealth inChrist. Yes, today our war is not with people all these crazy things going onin America today. Our war is a spiritual war. It can only be fought through thepower of the Holy Spirit and the power of the resurrection of Jesus Christclaiming and knowing that we stand strong in Jesus Christ. We don't reallyfight the battle. He fights the battle. He is our Joshua. We believe thisbecause of His resurrection and the fact we're connected to Him and we are Hisbody. He is the one who does the warfare, and He binds the strong man. He setsthe captive free. He gives us liberty in Himself.  Maythe Lord help us believe and apply this to our lives.

When storms rage and darkness surrounds us, where do we find our anchor? In John 6:16-21, we see Christ's disciples battling rough seas in the dark: until Jesus walks on water declaring "It is I; do not be afraid." In a world of political chaos, economic uncertainty, and spiritual warfare, this passage reminds us that our Sovereign Lord reigns supremely over every storm. True peace isn't found in earthly securities but in the unchanging character of our great "I AM" who calms both wind and wave. Christ doesn't merely offer temporary comfort. He IS our peace. Through His perfect life, substitutionary death, and victorious resurrection, He provides the only lasting refuge from God's righteous wrath against sin. Are you trusting in worldly anchors that will fail, or resting in the One whose love cannot be separated from His people?
