When we have an opportunity to understand L&D and Leadership trends from global L&D experts we should take them, right? On the eve of DevLearn, David Kelly (Chairman of the Learning Guild) gives us his perspective on the things we should be paying attention to as well as the areas we should be focusing our development on. KEY TAKEAWAYS Technology is changing the L&D landscape and we need to evolve with it, but this is something L&D has always done, the same conversations are happening the circumstances are just slightly different. L&D can sometimes be one of the first departments to be downsized if a company just looks at them as a cost centre, rather than how they should be looking at them, as a performance partner that is connected to driving the organisation forward. Mixed reality is very powerful, AR and VR can be good solutions to specific problems but their advantages and speed have slowed down, with AI taking a lot of attention away from development.  Whilst AI is impacting many areas of almost all organisations, it's important to understand where your organisation sits on takeup and where you can fit into that and act accordingly. L&D can appear to be susceptible to 'trends' but this isn't negative. Those who work in L&D are naturally curious and are looking for ways to help and support people's growth which naturally lends itself to new ideas and tools.  As the world develops and changes around us, so does how we learn, are our education and learning models keeping up pace? Leadership is something that is given by others and it isn't a set of traits but skills that can be learnt. Leadership is about what we do, rather than who we are. In this episode of Chattinn Cyber, host Mark Schein talks with Curtis Dukes, the former director of the National Security Agency (NSA) and the current Executive Vice President of the Center for Internet Security (CIS),  a non-profit organization that aims to make the connected world a safer place. Their conversation begins with a discussion on Curtis' background, specifically on his experience in the NSA. After spending more than three decades in service to the agency, he learned the following: Computer systems must provide their users with a pleasing experience to ensure that they won't switch to an alternative way. Technology is so ingrained into who we are as a society that we no longer notice it, even though we're online all the time. Business owners must allocate sufficient resources for the regular upkeep of their hardware and software programs, so that these won't be exploited by malicious adversaries. Curtis also talks about the CIS, giving an in-depth explanation of its goals and current efforts. In addition to providing cyber-threat intelligence and analysis to State, Local, Tribal, and Territorial government entities (SLTTs), the organization has also introduced controls and benchmarks that allow businesses to develop effective strategies against cyber-threats. He further recommends that business owners show the efforts they've put into building their defenses when trying to obtain a cyber-insurance policy. Regarding future trends, Curtis explains that the next few years will see ransomware playing an increasingly crucial role in cyberspace. To address this issue, the CIS has developed a community defense model that is based on genuine attack techniques. Published last August 2020 to much acclaim, this program will help businesses mitigate the risk of cyber-threats, enabling them to protect themselves from malicious agents. If you didn't pay the ransom then they threatened to expose the data, some of which could be harmful to the company or personally problematic, as well.” – Curtis (16:23) “By mapping attack techniques to mitigation, I think that's one way to raise cybersecurity across the board.” – Curtis (20:16)

Maria Tarasidou, Global Data Program Manager at Facebook, argues that legacy companies should follow the example of big tech to succeed with data-driven business transformation Enterprises are increasingly open to investing in new data-driven technologies that are shaping the future of business. But as Facebook Global Data Program Manager Maria Tarasidou argues in this week's Business of Data podcast, technology doesn't drive business transformation by itself. “You have to also be prepared to bring in the right people with the right mindset,” she says. “Everyone needs to understand data. Everybody needs to use it. Everybody needs to be able to go back and retrieve and extract the data they that need in the way that they need it and visualize it.” In recent years, many companies established hubs that are separate from their legacy business to kickstart the data strategies or innovation projects. While this can make sense in the short-term, Tarasidou notes that data-driven ways of working must become embedded across an entire organization before meaningful transformations can occur. “What happens in big tech companies is that there's no role that is actually a Data Analyst role,” she says. “Everyone is an analyst.” This chimes with the stories we hear from our wider data and analytics community. It's those companies that invest in data literacy and integrate data-driven ways of working into the roles of staff across the business which get the most value out of data and analytics. It's where we're heading. Oscar Garcia is the Founder and CEO of Uulala, a blockchain-powered company that seeks to support the financial inclusion of under-banked and unbanked groups of people through a smartphone app. Before becoming an entrepreneur, Oscar wanted to become a US Olympic diver. An unfortunate injury caused him to transition to business and eventually led to starting Uulala. He is joined by Andre Urena,  vice president and Head of Latino Partnerships. Oscar and Andre join us today to share the goal of Uulala and how it helps people have financial credibility despite their under-banked or unbanked status.
