Korea Risk Group Correspondent Joon Ha Park joins this week's podcast to discuss the latest signals from Pyongyang following President Donald Trump's renewed outreach to Kim Jong Un and the decision to shorten the Ulchi Freedom Shield joint military exercises from 11 days to five. He breaks down two recent statements from Kim Yo Jong, including her acknowledgment of the “excellent” personal relationship between Trump and her brother, while dismissing the reduced drills as insufficient. The conversation then turns to the wider implications of Trump's willingness to alter major alliance exercises, including whether North Korea could seek further concessions affecting South Korean defense priorities such as wartime operational control transfer and Seoul's plans for nuclear-powered submarines. In the second part of the episode, veteran journalist Mike Chinoy and humanitarian worker Kathi Zellweger discuss their new book, “Miss Kathi: Saving Lives in North Korea,” which draws on Zellweger's 75 trips to the DPRK and five years living in Pyongyang. They reflect on the famine of the 1990s, the difficulty of getting outsiders to understand the scale of the crisis and why predictions that hardship would bring down the North Korean system repeatedly proved wrong. They also explore the enduring debate over humanitarian access and aid monitoring, how repeated visits allowed Kathi to document the gradual rise of markets and other social changes and why they hope the book will encourage readers to see North Koreans not simply through the lens of nuclear weapons, diplomacy or the ruling family. About the podcast: The North Korea News Podcast is a weekly podcast hosted by Alannah Hill exclusively for NK News, covering all things DPRK — from news to extended interviews with leading experts and analysts in the field, along with insight from our very own journalists.

The Supreme Court has not ruled on the executive order aimed at mail voting. The effort to obtain state voter rolls has lost in court repeatedly. The midterms are coming and the numbers are not close. The Iran war has no exit. Canada walked away from a trade deal. That is a lot of corners at once, and Hawk expects the reaction to get sharper, particularly toward reporters. He also walks through why the 25th Amendment is not the remedy people imagine. Today's Headlines: Melania Trump made a surprise White House appearance — her first in weeks or possibly months — to announce a foster care initiative, opening with "I heard you missed me, here I am," which nobody would have thought twice about if it hadn't come directly after Jon Ossoff's comment that Trump wants to "travel with Natalie." The timing really did the heavy lifting there. Walmart posted its weakest growth since 2020, the FDA upgraded its frozen berry recall to its highest risk level over e.coli contamination, sourdough bread in Seattle was recalled for metal shards, and 65,000 people in Gary, Indiana have been without power for nine days with no restoration until at least next Tuesday. In other unpleasant news, the FBI raided Eric Swalwell's home and took his phone and computer as part of an investigation into his relationship with suspected Chinese spy Christine Fang, because some people really do make it too easy. The USS Abraham Lincoln was finally relieved of its nine-month deployment and is heading back to San Diego — a direct result of its crew publicly threatening to take their own lives. The publisher of Stars and Stripes announced his retirement citing "fundamental differences" with Hegseth's Pentagon, one week after the publication broke the Abraham Lincoln story, so do what you will with that information. Meanwhile, North Korea fired ballistic missiles hours after Kim Jong Un's sister dismissed Trump's requests for a diplomatic meeting and denied they'd even been in contact, which is a remarkable response to throwing South Korea under the bus for nothing. Russia flew a naval drone into Romanian airspace, which Romanian jets destroyed, and the EU Commission president called it hybrid warfare without naming Russia, which is the diplomatic equivalent of a strongly worded letter. And Trump is fighting to build a ballroom at his golf course in the Irish village of Doonbeg, where his only obstacle is a local hermit with no phone or social media who has blocked thousands of development projects across Ireland purely for sport. In other news, Meta's jury trial started in California with four states seeking billions in damages and platform reforms, alleging the company deliberately designed addictive features for children, studied how to maximize that addiction, and collected data on under-13s without parental consent while hiding all of it — with 25 more states going to trial later.  A DOJ whistleblower filed a complaint alleging the Ivy League antisemitism task force pressured universities into settlements with little to no evidence, calling the investigations "predetermined" political PR stunts designed to suspend federal funding — with career attorneys overruled when they objected. Pete Hegseth flew to Iowa on a taxpayer-funded military aircraft in his "personal capacity" to explore a 2028 presidential run while sailors on the USS Abraham Lincoln are still stranded at sea, ships are being attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, and at least one sailor was killed near Oman. Trump is also pushing aides to arrange a Kim Jong Un meeting this fall, apparently believing he can convince North Korea to give up a nuclear program they've been building since the 1990s, while simultaneously saying the Strait of Hormuz is under control as two more ships were attacked. In more food recall news, Outshine fruit bars were recalled nationwide due to possible glass contamination, because apparently popsicles are also not safe anymore. And finally, Florida primary results are in: Trump's pick Byron Donalds will face Democrat David Jolly in the governor's race, and abusive congressman Cory Mills lost his seat. Donald Trump is once again reaching out to Kim Jong Un, praising their personal relationship, calling for a reduction in U.S.-South Korea military exercises and claiming the North Korean leader has responded “very positively.” This week, NK News Lead Correspondent Shreyas Reddy joins the podcast to unpack what Trump actually said, how closely it resembles his 2018 diplomacy playbook and why the U.S. president may be turning toward North Korea again. He also discusses Washington and Seoul's decision to cut the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise from 11 days to five after Trump's directive, as well as what the abrupt change could mean for alliance cohesion.  Later, Shreyas explains why Kim would enter any renewed diplomacy from a much stronger position than he did in 2018 and looks at why U.S. strikes on Iran have further reinforced North Korea's rejection of denuclearization. The episode concludes with the possible ways Pyongyang could respond to Trump's overtures and the risk that renewed leader-to-leader diplomacy could leave South Korea on the sidelines.  About the podcast: The North Korea News Podcast is a weekly podcast hosted by Alannah Hill exclusively for NK News, covering all things DPRK — from news to extended interviews with leading experts and analysts in the field, along with insight from our very own journalists.

President Trump took to Truth Social last weekend to announce that the US will "substantially reduce" joint military exercises with South Korea. He cited his "very good relationship" with North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un, but he also accused South Korea of failing to help the US in its war with Iran – comments that suggest major new cracks in the US's relationship with a key ally.To understand the reaction from South Korea, we speak to the BBC's Seoul Correspondent Jake Kwon about whether Trump's sidelining of South Korea is a major foreign policy shift for the US. Today's Headlines: Todd Blanche went on Meet the Press and admitted he cannot pledge DOJ independence from the White House, and that the DOJ may ask the Supreme Court to intervene in 22 cases where judges blocked Trump's election interference efforts — specifically the administration's attempt to get voter rolls including names, addresses, and partial social security numbers from 30 states and DC. Trump also asked the Supreme Court to let him finish the $900 million White House renovation after courts ordered construction to stop by August 21st, now openly calling it a "national security structure" and "military complex" rather than a ballroom, posting an AI-generated video of himself consulting AI George Washington about the design, and accusing the people who sued him of treason for "revealing top military secrets" — about a ballroom. He also wants to redesign the entire Navy aircraft carrier fleet to look like World War 2 ships at $22 billion each. Meanwhile, families of sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln spoke to the Guardian describing relatives who lost 20-30 pounds, no clean drinking water, sparse food, and a five-week wait to see the ship's only psychiatrist — and when Trump was asked if the sailors had been deployed too long, he said they hadn't been deployed long enough. A detail the administration has not been eager to divulge is that Iran destroyed the Bahrain port where US Navy ships would normally dock, so every American warship in the region has nowhere to resupply. Trump also reduced joint military exercises with South Korea to please Kim Jong Un, posting a throwback photo of the two of them and noting they have "many where we're smiling" — sure, Donald. Jared Kushner met with Hamas in Egypt where they reaffirmed their commitment to disarming, which Netanyahu doesn't believe. In other news, Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty to two federal stalking charges and his lawyers are using the plea to argue double jeopardy on state charges, while his New York murder trial still starts next month. And finally,  Lake Mead and Lake Powell — the two largest reservoirs supplying water to seven western states — hit their lowest levels in seven decades, because July was the hottest month on record and winter was the driest. Silicon Bites Ep384 | 2026-08-17 | Trump hands Kim Jong Un the one concession he has demanded for thirty years — while Kim's shells, Kim's missiles and Kim's soldiers are killing Ukrainians. Sunday evening, Washington. Hours before eighteen thousand South Korean troops were due to begin the largest allied exercise on the Korean peninsula, the President of the United States went on social media and pulled the rug out from under them. He ordered the Pentagon to substantially reduce Ulchi Freedom Shield. He gave two reasons. The first was Seoul's refusal to join his war against Iran. The second was his personal relationship with Kim Jong Un.The first is geopolitical blackmail, that has no strategic logic to it. The second is treachery driven by his malignant narcissism – which is rapidly destroying American global influence and power and causing the order that bound the civilised world together since 1945 to unravel. ----------SUPPORT THE CHANNEL:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtainhttps://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtainhttps://www.gofundme.com/f/scaling-up-campaign-to-fight-authoritarian-disinformation----------TRUSTED CHARITIES ON THE GROUND:Save Ukrainehttps://www.saveukraineua.org/Superhumans - Hospital for war traumashttps://superhumans.com/en/UNBROKEN - Treatment. U.S. President Donald Trump on Aug. 16 ordered the Pentagon to scale back joint military exercises with South Korea. “Based on my very good relationship with Kim Jong Un, of North Korea, I am not happy with the fact that the United States has, long ago, agreed to participate in Joint Military Exercises with South Korea,” he wrote in an Aug. 16 post on Truth Social. “These exercises are not only costly, with much of these costs paid for by the United States of America (as usual!), but send a signal that is totally inappropriate and hostile, to a Country that, as long as Donald J. Trump has been President, has been unthreatening and respectful.”Democrats can't agree on whether they want to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement or reform it. The Democratic National Committee (DNC) approved resolutions calling for both during its summer meeting in Austin, Texas, on Aug. 15. One resolution calls on Democratic members of Congress to develop legislation abolishing ICE while adopting immigration reforms that include pathways to citizenship and protections for workers. Democrats also approved a resolution calling for “concrete reforms” of ICE.Actress Hayden Panettiere, best known for her roles in popular television series such as “Heroes” and “Nashville,” has died at age 36. Her father, Skip Panettiere, confirmed her death in a statement to ABC News on Aug. 16. The cause of death was not disclosed.
