Her books on differentiation are available in 15 languages. Carol works throughout the United States and internationally with educators who seek to create classrooms that are more equitable and effective for academically diverse students. -Never intended to be a teacher, but ended up a middle school educator. Traveled and commuted with a friend who became her learning partner. She had a diverse range of needs within her classroom of 40. -If we taught the whole class we were doomed, we needed to try something new. -We wanted our students as our partners. They told us how to help them more, what they liked, what they disliked, and what we could tweak to make learning better. She remained in that school for 21 years. -Differentiation -is a teaching model and it has to do with everything we do within a classroom and within schools. It can give us guidance to be better in every aspect of how we teach. -Resistance is human. Our job is not to wallow in it but to circumvent it. Our job is to make this classroom better for whoever walks through the door that day. -Coaching should not be a revolving door schedule. There is more opportunity when coaches deeply understand differentiation first and let go of their, “yes, buts…” -Help a teacher move forward confidently and competently-Teaching is complex. A good leader needs to be a little ahead of the game. -Aspire to get better in all elements of teaching- one element at a time. -Voice and choice are important in their learning, they have things they can teach us. Use time and space and materials flexibility. We can reach out to connect children's experience, their experience and their knowledge. -Show us that you know this, understand this and then can you show this, and can make a choice in how you show me. Make your choice in how you can show what you know. -There are many ways to be able to reach out to kids. Putting students at the center of their learning and teaching. What about these students? It is helping them to take charge from there. Scaffolding is so vital to so many learners. -Grace, the bottom line is grace, everyone in education needs to give themselves and each other grace every single day. Welcome to an interview with the authors of Fair Shake: Women and the Fight to Build a Just Economy, Naomi Cahn, June Carbone, and Nancy Levit. This book explains that the system that governs our economy—a winner-take-all economy—is the root cause of these myriad problems. The WTA economy self-selects for aggressive, cutthroat business tactics, which creates a feedback loop that sidelines women. The authors, three legal scholars, call this feedback loop “the triple bind”: if women don't compete on the same terms as men, they lose; if women do compete on the same terms as men, they're punished more harshly for their sharp elbows or actual misdeeds; and when women see that they can't win on the same terms as men, they take themselves out of the game (if they haven't been pushed out already). With odds like these stacked against them, it's no wonder women feel like, no matter how hard they work, they can't get ahead. Naomi Cahn is the Justice Anthony M. Other research interests include neuro-anatomical and functional features of people who stutter, auditory feedback mechanisms of speech control, autism treatment strategies, new genetic analysis techniques for modeling epigenetic complexity and exploring the relationship between cognition, temperament, and stuttering severity. Dr. Kraft is the director of the Behavior, Speech & Genetics Lab (Rackham 051), where the majority of her research is conducted. Her latest research showcases novel approaches to the identification of gene-to-gene interaction and regulation as new genetic methodologies offer the promise of identifying etiological bases for many developmental disorders including speech and language disorders. Dr. Kraft's research team in collaboration with the Univeristy of Texas, Baylor Medical, and Vanderbuilt University, was recently awarded a grant from the National Institutes of Health to identify genes for stuttering. She will be collecting saliva samples from people all around the world who stutter. If you are a person who stutters, or has ever stuttered, and you are interested in participating in this study, please click here to register! Study Background: Stuttering is a developmental speech disorder that commonly runs in families. With an onset between the ages of 2-5 years old, 5-6% of children will stutter and 1% of adults will stutter. In some places of the world 11-14% of the population stutters! The genes contributing this disorder have not been conclusively identified in the population at large. This study will investigate thousands of people who currently stutter, or ever stuttered as children, for genetic markers of the disorder. Discoveries will lead to better treatment options, development of prevention strategies, and give answers to the people affected. Education BA Audiology & Speech Sciences, Michigan State University MA Communicative Sciences & Disorders, Michigan State University PhD Speech Language Pathology & Human Genetics, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign PostDoctoral Scholar Human Genetics, University of Chicago Awards and grants Center for Mendelian Genomics Genes for Persistent Developmental Stuttering: Australian Cohort The goal of this study is to investigate the genetics underlying this speech and language disorder. The investigation will focus on the genetics, neurobiology, cognitive and severity phenotypes within families enriched for the disorder located in Perth, Australia. Role: Principal Investigator, Collaborator, Analyst WSU Genetics Research Grant Biomarkers for Speech Disorders: An Imaging Genetics Study The goal of this study is to investigate the pathophysiology of stuttering in 40 adults who persistently stutter and 40 matched controls. In collaboration with McMaster University, Canada, The investigation will explore gene expression, neurobiology, and allelic variation in respect to anatomical and functional differences within the experimental cohort. Role: Co-Principal Investigator National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) Genetic Study of Developmental Stuttering This study will examine genome-wide genetic risk in 800 unrelated non-consanguineous individuals who stutter and 3000 ancestry matched controls with replication of top signals in an additional independent 1000 cases and 1000 controls, comprising the largest proposed genetic study of stuttering to date and aimed at the identification of genes and transmission models responsible for the disorder. Do you want to know how to represent yourself in divorce court or in a custody case/battle against a narcissist and actually win? In this episode, Rebecca Zung speaks with Tina Swithin, who founded One Mom’s Battle, and who did just that. Dr. Ramani, the foremost expert psychologist in narcissism also offers her wisdom in expertise on the mind of a narcissist during these court cases, sharing what causes narcissism and what makes narcissists tick. Tina’s blog caught the attention of Christie Brinkley when the press attention shed light on her well-known custody battle with a narcissist. This is truly an inspirational David-slew-Goliath story. If you are dealing with a narcissist in court and don’t have the money to hire a lawyer, find out the exact steps Tina took when she decided to go pro se (also called pro per) in her case. This is Part 2 of a 2 part episode and can also be viewed on YouTube: Part 2 can be viewed here. MORE ABOUT TINA SWITHIN In 2009, One Mom’s Battle (OMB) began with one mother, Tina Swithin, navigating a high-conflict divorce in the California Family Court System while in pro per. When Tina named her blog, “One Mom’s Battle,” she truly felt alone and isolated in her journey. After going public with her story in 2011, Tina quickly realized that she was not alone, and that narcissistic abuse affects both men and women. Tina continues to champion children’s rights versus mother’s rights or father’s rights. Ultimately, Tina’s family court nightmare came to an end in 2014 when a Family Court commissioner labelled her ex-husband a “sociopath” and revoked his parenting time (and contact with the children). In 2019, Tina successfully terminated his parental rights which is very difficult to do in California. Tina has now dedicated her life to raising awareness on narcissistic personality disorder and its impact on victims and, on the family court system. MORE ABOUT DR. Narcissists are the most difficult, toxic and high conflict personalities on the planet. So when it comes to fighting with a narcissist, divorcing a narcissist, dealing with a narcissist in court, breaking up with one in either a romantic or business partnership, it's downright hell. Why? Because narcissists fight dirty and there is no bar too low for them. They'll do whatever they think they can get away with and more. Gaslighting, obstruction, triangulation, intimidation tactics and more are just a few of the things in their bag of tricks. Jack Ridl was walking with his 7-year-old daughter when she said "with" was the most important word because people always have to be with something, someone, or themselves. When she added that it meant everyone has to makes sure they have a good "with," Jack's perception of the world changed. We talk about how a simple and profound concept has since shaped his life, health, and poetry. Additional Resources Jack Ridl ridl.wordpress.com on Facebook Saint Peter and the Goldfinch by Jack Ridl (Wayne State University Press) My Brother—A Star My mother was pregnant through the first nine games of the season. We were 7- 2. I waited for a brother. My father kept to the hard schedule. Waking the morning of the tenth game, I thought of skipping school and shooting hoops. My cornflakes were ready, soggy. There was a note: "The baby may come today. Get your haircut." We were into January, and the long December snow had turned to slush. The wind was mean. My father was gone. I looked in on my mother still asleep and hoped she'd be OK. I watched her, dreamed her dream: John at forward, me at guard. He'd learn fast. At noon, my father picked me up at the playground. My team was ahead by six. We drove toward the gym. "Mom's OK," he said and tapped his fist against my leg. The Plymouth ship that rode the hood pulled us down the street. "The baby died," he said. I felt my feet press hard against the floorboard. I put my elbow on the door handle, my head on my hand, and watched the town: Kenner's Five and Ten, Walker's Hardware, Jarret's Bakery, Shaffer's Barber Shop, the bank. Dick Green and Carl Stacey waved. "It was a boy." We drove back to school. "You gonna coach tonight?" "Yes." "Mom's OK?" "Yes. She's fine. Sad. But fine. She said for you to grab a sandwich after school. I'll see you at the game. Don't forget about your hair." I got out, walked in late to class. "We're doing geography," Mrs. Wilson said. "Page ninety-seven. The prairie." That night in bed I watched this kid firing in jump shots from everywhere on the court. He'd cut left, I'd feed him a fine pass, he'd hit. I'd dribble down the side, spot him in the corner, thread the ball through a crowd to his soft hands, and he'd loft a star up into the lights where it would pause then gently drop, fall through the cheers and through the net. The game never ended. I fell into sleep. My hair was short. We were 8 and 2. for my mother and my father Jack Ridl First published in The Journal/Ohio State University Subsequently published in Saint Peter and the Goldfinch (Wayne State University Press) Jack Ridl, Poet Laureate of Douglas, Michigan (Population 1100), in April 2019 released Saint Peter and the Goldfinch (Wayne State University Press, 2019). Winner of The Gary Gildner Prize for Poetry, Jack has been featured on public radio (“It’s Only a Game with Bill Littlefield,” “The Story with Dick Gordon,” and Garrison Keillor’s “The Writer’s Almanac.”) Then Poet Laureate Billy Collins selected his Against Elegies for The Center for Book Arts Chapbook Award. He read in NYCity with Billy Collins and Sharon Dolin at Christmas after 9/11. Open up Instagram right now, and start counting the number of narcissists in your feed today. How many? Three, ten, fifty? Is there anyone real in your feed? Narcissistic personalities have always existed, but with social media, it's a bigger problem than ever. These hyper-insecure people lack empathy, live in a constant state of conflict, and value status and outward appearances over real human connection and understanding. Why does it matter? Because we work with them, we live with them, and in some cases, we even marry and spend our lives with them. In this week's podcast, you'll meet a clinical psychologist who shares her pragmatic and down-to-earth approach to living with or running from the narcissists in your life. Listen & Learn: How to identify a narcissist. Why the stereotypical "successful man" today is often the definition of a narcissist. Realistic outlook of change (hint: low to none). I am thrilled to bring you Holly Elissa Bruno on today’s episode. She has a huge heart and has seven decades of wisdom to bring to you in times of change. She is an expert in legal issues as a “recovering attorney,” and has great advice on how to run a business with clear policies that protect you. We talk to Holly about persistence through challenges, the curved line of our paths, how knowing the law manages our expectations, trends and innovation within the industry, and being of support to the unique and authentic leaders making a difference in our future. Key Takeaways: [8:13] Holly began in education and discovered that she would love to work with children while they are still open and forming their attitudes in early childhood. Along the way, she became a professor, attorney, and taught a course called “The Human Side of Management.” She had a great blessing of meeting and networking with early childhood leaders and felt inspired to continue on the path of changing lives. [13:37] Holly feels most passionate and inspired when working with leaders that work with children. Even though the work is so powerful, a lot of times we are seen as glorified babysitters, caregivers, or lucky to get paid to work with children. [18:41] Holly’s intention is to keep learning always and she has a fascination with life, travel and education. [21:49] One of the things she did to change her life immensely was to take her experience with law and travel and bring it into co-writing her book Managing Legal Risks in Early Childhood Programs. [29:07] Holly gives examples of when the law can be facilitative rather than restrictive, and how certain policies can help get an honest reference for a potential employee. [39:51] Children should get outdoors and have a free and fun environment. We don’t recommend eating dirt but there is something fun to making a mud pie or splashing in a puddle. [43:10] Holly defines herself as a recovering work addict. She is much less focused now on her accomplishments and to do list and more on being present. [45:57] It’s about the four L’s: living, loving, learning and laughing. Holly pulls it into one practice each day by asking “How much today was my life touched by love, and how much did I open my heart?” [52:16] If a child doesn’t feel safe the child can’t relax enough to learn. Until a child feels safe he/she can’t feel love and absorb any type of education. [56:03] Holly defines a rockstar as someone that is so true to themselves that they can use all of their unique and authentic self to make a difference. We describe the process involved and the eligibility criteria used with regard to each of these types of petitions.
