In this episode of Money Tales, our guest is Filipa Lancastre, PhD. Filipa is someone who has never been afraid to do things differently. While most young adults in Portugal stay under their parents' roof until their 30s, Filipa took a different route. As a rising McKinsey consultant, she bought her own place, got her parents to guarantee the loan, and walked away five years later with a 50% return. But that was just the beginning. Filipa is an Assistant Professor (adjunct) of Strategy at Universidade Católica Portuguesa. She holds her PhD in Management from NOVA SBE. Filipa was a senior researcher and faculty at Nova SBE and Universidade Europeia. Prior to her academic activities, Filipa worked in telecom, serving as advisor to the board at ZON and leading the customer relationship management department at TV Cabo. She was also a strategy consultant at McKinsey & Company. Filipa is an Industrial Engineer from Instituto Superior Técnico (Universidade de Lisboa) and holds an MBA from INSEAD.
Escuchar audio

Filmed at DemystiCon 2025 in Portugal, Dr. C.S. Unnikrishnan, from India's Tata Institute, reveals a very different take on the nature of light. Beyond the noise of headlines and textbooks, the speed of light's measurement isn't proving to be so simple. Drawing on years at the heart of experiments that listen for the universe's faintest signals, he questions whether the speed of light is truly constant. Here, gravity and clocks intertwine, and relativity itself stands on uncertain ground. Foreign nations consider F-35 alternatives such as the Typhoon and FCAS, Denver Airport studies the use of a small modular reactor, Astronaut Jim Lovell passed, Senate bill blocks ATC privatization, NTSB hearings highlighted, and the Regional Airline Association calls for accredited flight training programs to be recognized as professional degrees. Aviation News Spain rules out F-35 order, prioritizes Eurofighter and FCAS The Spanish Ministry of Defense has decided to “prioritize investment in European industry” and will consider the Eurofighter Typhoon or the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) over the Lockheed Martin F-35. The Spanish government wants to replace its aging fleet of McDonnell Douglas F/A-18 Hornets and AV-8B Harrier II aircraft. Previously, the F-35 was considered a leading candidate. Talks with Lockheed Martin are now suspended. Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II, courtesy F35.com. Other potential foreign F-35 customers, including Canada and Portugal, have signaled doubts about joining the American-led program amid geopolitical strain with the Trump administration. Swiss lawmakers are calling for the government to cancel a $9.1 billion order for Lockheed Martin's F-35 stealth fighter. Denver to look at nuclear option for power at Denver International Airport The Denver airport (DIA) “issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) to study the feasibility of building a small modular (nuclear) reactor (SMR) on the DEN campus. The study is part of DEN's overall efforts to meet future clean energy demands.” A new Colorado law reclassifies nuclear energy as a clean energy resource. See the press release: DEN to Pursue More Alternative Energy Options for Future Needs and A nuclear reactor at the Denver airport? Here's what you need to know. Professor Thomas Albrecht, director of the Nuclear Science and Engineering Center at the Colorado School of Mines, said, "The idea, with many of the small modular reactors, is you can drive them up on a semi. put them down on a concrete pad and plug them in, and they just go. The idea of many of these designs is you could keep adding them." The study will cost up to $1.25 million and is expected to take between 6-12 months to complete, at which time DEN, along with its partners, will evaluate the findings and determine next steps. NASA Administrator Reflects on Passing of Astronaut Jim Lovell Astronaut James A. Lovell was a pioneering NASA astronaut best known as the commander of Apollo 13 and as one of the first humans to orbit the Moon, having flown a total of four space missions—Gemini 7, Gemini 12, Apollo 8, and Apollo 13—more than any astronaut in NASA's early years. Astronaut James A. Lovell, NASA. Gemini 7 (1965): Set an endurance record of nearly 14 days in orbit and accomplished the first rendezvous of two manned spacecraft, a vital maneuver for Moon missions. Gemini 12 (1966): Commanded the final Gemini mission, featured Buzz Aldrin as pilot, and executed complex extravehicular activities, closing the Gemini program successfully. Apollo 8 (1968): Served as Command Module Pilot for the first crewed mission to leave Earth's orbit and enter lunar orbit, making him and his crewmates the first humans to orbit the Moon and see its far side. Apollo 13 (1970): Commanded the ill-fated lunar mission that suffered a catastrophic explosion en route, forcing a dramatic turnaround and Moon flyby. His leadership in crisis turned it into an inspirational story of survival; Lovell and his crew made it back safely, an event celebrated worldwide and dramatized in the 1995 film "Apollo 13". What if the energy transition isn't a race, but a steady march toward the end of fossil fuel usage? Do we need to move more like the tortoise, and less like the hare? And in a world of competing narratives, who gets to define "pragmatism"?In this season finale of Cleaning Up, hosts Michael Liebreich and Bryony Worthington unpack these questions as they review Season 15's most compelling conversations about energy transformation, and celebrate five years of Cleaning Up. They dissect the current political landscape, particularly the challenges facing clean energy in the United States, and Bryony grills Michael on his recent Bloomberg essay on the "Pragmatic Climate Reset."This is the final episode of Season 15 of Cleaning Up, join us in September for the start of Season 16.Leadership Circle: Cleaning Up is supported by the Leadership Circle, and its founding members: Actis, Alcazar Energy, Davidson Kempner, EcoPragma Capital, EDP of Portugal, Eurelectric, the Gilardini Foundation, KKR, National Grid, Octopus Energy, Quadrature Climate Foundation, SDCL and Wärtsilä. You can send me a text if you have a comment or questionThe 1810 and 1811 campaigns in Iberia were defined by an absence- Napoleon's absence. Napoleon had won the battle of Wagram in July of 1809. This was at once a decisive defeat of the Austrian army, and the biggest land battle in European history up to that point.Obviously, the flow of men was out of Spain, into Germany during 1809. But after the Peace of Schönbrunn is signed in October, the flow can begin in the opposite direction. Napoleon should come, plans to come. He has laid out an operation where he, with elements of the Imperial Guard, would invade Portugal with 100,000 men, and overwhelm the British defense, retaking Portugal. And interestingly, Wellington is informing Castlereagh that the French would need 100,000 men to drive him out of Portugal by this point. So great minds are thinking alike. And yet Napoleon did not go. Massena is picked to lead the invasion of Portugal. French assumptions about what would happen do not pan out.

(1:15:20) “Sleep hacks” — algum vale a pena? | Suplementos? AP correspondent Charles de Ledesma reports wildfires continue to burn in parts of Europe, including Spain and Portugal, as millions of people across the continent struggle to adapt to the new reality: record summer heat.
Date: 12th of August, 2025Location: Madeira, PortugalA Note To The Runners: Get my book here.Join The JL Mentorship: Fill out the form here.Buy me a coffee here: My go-to order is a long black. Poem #1:All morning I thought of figs. Quietly, they sit, beside my makeshift dining table. The tree talks louder the further August goes on. I run into the highest point of blue I can reach, till the mountain says no more.My legs bear the dust, I'm grateful I bought water.Would I just be a rock without this life that bleeds through me?Off the mountain, In thick accent, I'm handed ameixas In small plastic, a dozen or so?Are these from your home?My Father's. Plums. They'll do. Days before it was beetroot and corn.Returning to my stone walls,I think of the fig tree. Waiting to nourish me. I take just one. One fig for now.Poem #2:Every epoch is paired with a flavour.Lands that felt like the last frontier were salty.Late summers in France, peaches under castle shade. Some years, I made myself sick, overdosing on Camembert. Saved my bread, and Swiss Chocolate. Taste is amplified by the seasons,And multiplied by the company.Yet, it becomes cemented to my coreIn the days I feel most alive. The European Summer of 25' Will be remembered by the subtle sweetness,Of the fig tree in the North of Portugal.Plastic buckets full,Must be eaten,In two days. These days will be remembered by the honeying of figs,And the forgingOf the manI am becoming.
In Episode 434 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with Bruno Maçães, a geopolitical strategist and the former Minister of European Affairs for Portugal, whose latest book titled "World Builders" explores the intersection of technology and geopolitics. In the first hour, Bruno puts forward a radical new theory of geopolitics and technology that no longer views the world as a neutral battlefield between great powers to control territory and resources, but rather as a contest in world building that will afford the most powerful states back-doors into all aspects of our lives that they can use to alter the state of the world at any time or place of their choosing. In the second hour, Kofinas and Maçães explore why the United States has ceased building the global order it once championed, paving the way for China to construct a new world according to its own technological standards and ideological blueprints. We discuss what this means for the nature of the international order, individual freedom, the form that governance is likely to take in an increasingly virtualized world, and what is in store for all of us if things remain on their current trajectory and the United States recedes from its world building project, or perhaps, even worse, decides to destroy it entirely. Today's conversation is with Ed Latimore. A heavyweight boxer, physics graduate, author, and returning guest to the podcast.Ed is not your typical fighter. After an 8½-year break from the ring, he returned at the age of 40 to secure a first-round TKO. But the time away wasn't idle. He earned a degree in physics, taught calculus, got sober, lived in Portugal, coached boxing, and started a family. His latest book Hard Lessons from the Hurt Business, is a brutally honest reflection on the tough lessons life and boxing have taught him. In this conversation, Ed shares why a difficult childhood gave him the mindset to endure, how men can build identity without toxic status games, and what he's learning now as a father. This is a raw, reflective, and powerful conversation about masculinity, hardship, and redemption.Expect to learn:Why Ed believes pain builds perspective and emotional resilienceThe hardest lessons from boxing and how they shaped himHow Stoicism helped him avoid becoming a victim of his environmentWhy modern masculinity needs to mature and what's wrong with red pill cultureHow fatherhood has changed Ed's outlook on legacy and loveWhy you don't need to suffer like Ed to learn what he didShop Notox with COL15 to save www.notoxskincare.co Connect with Ed:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/edlatimore/Book: https://www.amazon.com/Hard-Lessons-Hurt-Business-Boxing/dp/0593716361/ref=sr_1_1?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.mlwsBwXsy3GkzwXk811Mr6S0gBvY6Jy5RokXtZe7D5f3yUcPtOm0erGOzsq2cZ2uuyX4w8ovJg7m8gWlKHoY21WAm3CV6JEbLxiYmOdWKDU46RtvLQca1uIYczQQuX40.sBk0BIi7Fx8UAJz2cTiiRRSQ9DYkQcJzom5Fxi79Vlc&dib_tag=se&keywords=hard+lessons+from+the+hurt+business&qid=1754041506&sr=8-1YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@edlatimore1Connect with Col:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/col.cambro/Email List: https://mailchi.mp/548e38ba5942/colincambroPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/ColCampbell
Send us a textWhat if the perfect expat destination for Americans isn't Portugal or Costa Rica, but South Africa? A country where your dollars stretch four times further, world-class healthcare costs pennies on the dollar, and English is widely spoken across breathtaking landscapes from cosmopolitan Cape Town to the wild savannas.South Africa represents a compelling paradox for potential American expats. The affordability is staggering—nice apartments from $430-1100 monthly, excellent wine under $5, and private doctor visits for $20—creating luxury-level living on modest budgets. Yet this financial advantage exists alongside complex social dynamics, occasional infrastructure challenges, and a bureaucracy that moves at its own distinctive pace. This episode breaks down everything Americans need to know about relocating to South Africa: multiple visa pathways for retirees, remote workers, entrepreneurs and skilled professionals; the remarkable two-tier healthcare system; cultural integration in a country with eleven official languages; safety considerations beyond the headlines; and paths to permanent residency. Through conversation with American expat Heather Mason, who has lived in Johannesburg for 15 years, we explore both practical details and the intangible rewards that keep expatriates in South Africa long-term.Is South Africa right for everyone? Absolutely not. But for Americans seeking affordability without sacrificing quality of life, who value natural beauty and cultural richness over perfect infrastructure, and who approach new experiences with patience and openness—this overlooked destination might just be the answer. THE VIBE with Kelly Cardenas presents CHRIS CARDENAS - CARDENAS LEGACY TEQUILAChris CardenasPresident & FounderOriginally from Southern California Chris moved often, splitting his time between California and New Mexico, where his paternal family is originally from. After migrating up to Northern California for high school and college, he made the life-changing decision to join the US Air Force, where he served as an Aerospace Propulsion Specialist for over 4 years and called Alaska his home for the next 17.While living in Alaska, an opportunity arose for him to pursue his dream of being involved in the music industry. He became a concert promoter for indie bands such as Portugal the Man, Daughtry, 3OH3, Falling in Reverse, Fuel, Lit, and many more. It is there he met who would eventually become his wife, and took Chris south of the border to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Now, the big question: Why Tequila?Like many of us, Chris' experience with drinking low-quality, high-additive tequila was not a good one. However, while living in Mexico for over 3 years and becoming immersed in the culture, he took the time to learn the art of making a high-quality sipping tequila that was truly enjoyable. In 2017, Chris decided to retire from the music industry and relocate his family to Santa Clarita, CA. As a thank you to all his music industry supporters, he wanted to offer a quality tequila personalized and branded with his promotion company logo, Anger MGMT. He found a company in Guadalajara, Mexico that not only made the bottles but introduced him to what would eventually become the journey to his own tequila brand.Upon tasting that tequila, Chris was convinced this was what he was meant to do. Finding who made this amazing tequila was not an easy task, but after months of missing leads and relentless persistence, he was introduced to Francisco Gonzalez Jr, currently our master distiller and member of one of the most prestigious families in the tequila world. This is how Cardenas Legacy Tequila was born.Chris now resides in Santa Clarita, CA, with his wife and their three daughters, the oldest is currently attending the Coast Guard Academy. Chris combines his airline job and his passion for premium tequila by educating and sharing Cardenas Legacy Tequila with the world. This is a must-listen for anyone dreaming of launching a stunning geodesic dome retreat on their land. Because here's the truth: what you don't know about buying domes could cost you thousands. I'm joined by the brilliant Ronnie Smith of Glamping Revolution, one of Europe's most trusted manufacturers of luxury glamping structures. Based in sunny Portugal, Ronnie and her team don't just design show-stopping domes (including Europe's largest suspended dome structure), they also work from inside them. So when it comes to real-world insights, she's the real deal. In this episode, we dive into: Why geodesic domes are guest magnets (and how to use that to your advantage) The biggest mistakes people make when buying their first dome, and how to avoid them What to look for in quality materials and an ethical supplier The secret to choosing a dome that lasts 15 years, not just one season We also explore the ancient, almost mystical sacred symmetry of the dome, and ask whether its timeless design could be the secret behind why guests are so drawn to it. If you're serious about glamping and want to make smart, sustainable choices from the start, this episode will leave you inspired, informed, and ready to build something unforgettable. This will be a lighter episode as summer is upon us. We will discuss and talk about tech that changed our lives, as well as tech that disappointed. Some of you might know, some of you might not know, but both me and Nuno are tech nerds. We have played with tech most of our lives, always looking for the next available new piece of technology to use or collect. We are going to talk about that and maybe start on the positive side. The tech that changed our lives.Nuno Goncalves PedroI'm sure everyone has their stories. Even if you're not a nerd, there's going to be that piece of equipment, that mobile phone, that gaming console, that whatever, that dramatically changed you, made you more productive, or allowed you to do something that you'd never done before, et cetera. It's always an interesting conversation to have, and it creates a lot of wonderful memories. It brings you back to places, it brings you back to that moment where you bought the device, that first time that you used it, the experiences you had, some of them maybe actually, not necessarily positive. We'll come back to the worst tech purchases of all time. Shall I launch Austilities, Bertrand? Shall I tell my first one?Bertrand SchmittSure, Nuno, feel free.Nuno Goncalves PedroGood stuff. I'll start with maybe the one that I've had the longest memory on, which is the Philips Videopac. Now, many of you will have no clue what I'm talking about.Bertrand SchmittNo idea.Nuno Goncalves PedroThe Videopac. Even Bertrand, which is impressive. The Videopac was a video game console that worked with cartridges, launched obviously via Philips. I'm not sure if the one I had was actually from Philips, question mark. It was the same format and I remember it very fondly. It was really a gaming console with a little joystick. Very basic thing. The Videopac was actually launched first thing in '83. I'm not sure when I first started using it, but I suspect I was 7 or 8 years old, so that would have been a couple of years thereafter.I remember it fondly. We got it from Andorra. If you guys know, I was born in Portugal. Andorra is this small-owned country between Spain and France, and they had no sales taxes back then, so you'd go there and buy stuff really cheaply. I think that's what we bought when I went there with my parents.I remember it very fondly. I remember playing games on it. Strangely enough, I don't remember any of the games I played on it, but I remember it very fondly as one of my first computer experiences and stuff. That was pretty cool.Bertrand SchmittNice. I think in France. I'm not sure this one was available. At least it doesn't ring a bell. I think we had some Atari consoles in France. Me, actually, I didn't start with a console. I started with a regular computer. Not the PC kind. It was an Atari computer. Actually Atari 520ST, very popular in Europe. There was also Amiga that had similar computers. It was Motorola CPU 68000 if I remember.
On this week's Stansberry Investor Hour, Dan and Corey welcome Dr. David "Doc" Eifrig back to the show. Doc is the new permanent CEO of Stansberry Research's parent company MarketWise, as well as the editor of five newsletters at Stansberry and a member of the Investment Committee for Stansberry Portfolio Solutions. Doc kicks off the show by asking Dan about his recent river cruise vacation on the Mississippi River and sharing stories about his own trip to Lisbon, Portugal a few weeks ago. This leads to a conversation about Doc and Dan's first meeting in 2007 and how Dan was a "diligence check" for Doc joining Stansberry in the first place. Doc also talks about his permanent appointment as MarketWise CEO after almost a year holding the interim role. (0:46) Next, Doc discusses the financial-newsletter industry and what sets Stansberry apart in this era where anyone can self-publish content – including free content and AI-generated content. "I want us to be known as a trusted source," he notes. As Doc emphasizes, Stansberry is good at finding talented analysts who work hard, know their stuff, and can meet deadlines. He also looks back on the company since its "disaster" going public, previous leadership that didn't respect the company's history, and what has mattered most to him since becoming CEO. (23:57) Finally, Doc explains that caring about what you're doing and the experience you want to give is the most important thing in business. He gives shout-outs to several folks at MarketWise who are doing just this, from Stansberry's Executive Editor Carli Flippen overseeing everything that gets published, to the marketing team and copywriters who care about the customers more than making a sale.
