In this illuminating conversation with Bjorn Ekeberg, co-founder of Recharge Health, we uncover the science behind light therapy and explore why some devices deliver transformative results while others fall flat.Did you know that near-infrared light can penetrate up to four inches into your body, reaching deep tissues, joints, and even organs? Or that the power output of a device is often more crucial than its wavelength specifications? Bjorn shares a simple but powerful rule of thumb: "If it doesn't have a fan, it's not strong enough." This insight helps explain why those inexpensive light therapy belts often fail to deliver meaningful results. We dive deep into the cellular mechanisms at work, exploring how near-infrared light stimulates mitochondria—the energy centers that make up an astonishing 10% of your body weight. This cellular boost triggers cascading health benefits, from accelerated recovery and reduced inflammation to improved gut function and skin rejuvenation. Women experiencing perimenopausal or menopausal joint pain may find particular relief through targeted treatment, while athletes use it to prevent injuries and speed recovery from training. The applications extend far beyond what most people realize. Recent research shows promising results for respiratory conditions (including post-COVID recovery), thyroid function, fertility concerns, and even cognitive performance through the gut-brain axis. Whether you're seeking pain relief, faster recovery, or preventive health support, understanding the science behind effective light therapy empowers you to make informed choices in this rapidly evolving field.Support the showPlease rate & review my podcast with a few kind words on Apple or Spotify. With a PhD in Philosophy of Science, his speaking engagements range from cosmology to health and recovery. He is an unorthodox thinker who likes to challenge the unquestionable and promote newer and better ways of understanding and living.   The near-infrared technology used by FlexBeam was originally developed by NASA. In-house studies have shown it to deliver a 33% faster recovery after a muscle pull, 75% reduction in muscular-skeletal pain, 40% improvement in strength performance, and a 30% improvement in deep sleep.    First launched on Indiegogo in October 2020, FlexBeam has done $5M+ in sales and has major brand ambassadors from the sports world, including Norwegian Tennis star Casper Ruud and Norwegian soccer player and Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard.   Quick recap The main topics discussed in this conversation are the potential of red light technology in health and sports tech, the development and marketing of the world's first wearable infrared therapy device, the importance of investing in research and development for innovation, the non-pharmaceutical approach to health, the benefits of natural remedies, the concept of viewing the body as a natural healing system, the role of light therapy in promoting natural healing, and the significance of personal health and wellness.     Summary of the conversation   Health, Entrepreneurship, and Technology Focus Michael and Bjørn discussed the focus of their upcoming conversation, agreeing to prioritize the health aspect. They touched on the possibility of including aspects of entrepreneurship and leadership, given Bjørn's personal experiences. Bjørn clarified that their conversation would be recorded in both video and audio formats. They were also set to discuss Bjørn's latest project, a health solution based on infrared technology. Red Light Technology: Health and Sports Tech Game-Changer Bjørn and Michael discussed the potential of red light technology in health and sports tech. Bjørn, who has been involved with this technology for about five years, explained that it is a game-changer that can improve health and shift perceptions about light and health. Michael agreed, noting the impact of sunlight on mood and mental health. Bjørn shared their journey, which began when they were introduced to this technology by friends who stumbled upon NASA research about the impact of near infrared and red light on the physiology of the body. Bjørn was surprised by the lack of awareness about this technology, given its decades-long research history. Innovative Wearable Therapy Device Discussion Bjørn shared about their team's journey in designing and marketing the world's first wearable infrared therapy device. They emphasized the importance of making such technology user-friendly and accessible, as part of a larger mission to raise awareness about the benefits of light therapy. Michael echoed Bjørn's sentiments, noting the tendency to undervalue and underutilize discoveries once they are made. They pointed out that there is a need to further explore the potential applications of such innovations, using the example of a new method to print a hip replacement without surgery. Innovation and Alternative Health Approaches Michael and Bjørn emphasized the importance of investing in research and development (R&D) for innovation. Bjørn highlighted the challenge of making these innovations accessible to the majority of people and raising awareness about them. They discussed a non-pharmaceutical approach to health, including the use of light therapy for pain relief and muscle repair, which is seen as a more powerful and broader approach than the dominant biochemical paradigm. The conversation concluded with a discussion about the resistance these alternative approaches often face due to challenging traditional beliefs about medicine. Natural Healthcare: Benefits and Innovations Michael discussed their belief in natural approaches to healthcare, emphasizing the potential benefits of using natural remedies over synthetic medicines due to their lower risk of side effects. They highlighted the importance of the body's ability to naturally consume and absorb these remedies. Michael also expressed their support for innovative products that promote health and wellness. Towards the end, they showed interest in learning about future developments and innovations in this field, prompting Bjørn to further discuss the paradigm shift in healthcare. Self-Healing Mechanisms and Innovative Solutions Bjørn discussed the concept of viewing the body as a natural healing system and highlighted the importance of understanding its self-healing mechanisms. They criticized the conventional biochemical or pharmaceutical paradigm that views health care and healing as something external. Bjørn emphasized that the body's own capacity to heal should be recognized. They also mentioned their product, 'Flex Beam', a wearable device that uses near-infrared and red light therapy to enhance the body's natural healing capacity. Bjørn pointed out that technological advancements like 'Flex Beam' were not possible a few years ago due to the high cost of LEDs, but now, due to technological improvements, they are becoming more affordable. Michael agreed with Bjørn's insights, appreciating the beauty of innovation and the potential of discovering affordable solutions. Health, Wellness, and Innovative Solutions Michael and Bjørn had a detailed discussion about the importance of personal health and wellness, emphasizing the need for innovative solutions that can help people manage their health actively rather than reactively. They explored the concept of the human body as a "battery" that needs recharging, and highlighted the role of light therapy in this process. Bjørn mentioned the device called Flex Beam, which has gained popularity in sports and health sectors for its effectiveness and ease of use. The conversation concluded with Bjørn providing details about Recharge Health, the company behind Flex Beam, and inviting others to learn more about the product and the team.   Links: https://recharge.health/no?ref=breakfastleadership https://www.drbjorn.com/  https://www.facebook.com/theflexbeam/  https://www.instagram.com/theflexbeam/  https://www.linkedin.com/company/rechargeyourhealth/?viewAsMember=true  https://www.youtube.com/@Rechargehealth

He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Victoria, Canada, and is also a seasoned Philosopher of Science. His extensive knowledge base and wide-ranging interests make him an intellectual powerhouse. Bjørn serves as the Chief Commercial Officer at Recharge Health. This organization is known for promoting and selling FlexBeam, a revolutionary wearable infrared therapy device designed to significantly improve musculoskeletal issues, enhance strength performance, expedite recovery, and promote better sleep. He is the author of Metaphysical Experiments: Physics and the Invention of the Universe (Volume 49) (Posthumanities) and teaches the public the science and metaphysics behind our understanding of the universe. He also created high-end scripted drama and co-wrote the award-winning series VALKYRIEN, which NRK and Channel 4 picked up. The series was so successful that it landed on both the New York Times and BBC's Top 10 list in 2017 and is currently being remade in the UK as "Temple" for Sky. In this episode, Bjorn discusses the importance of utilizing light to improve Mitochondrial Health. Bjorn reveals how red and near-infrared wavelengths can stimulate the body's natural process of healing. Bjorn dives into the mechanisms and benefits of red and near-infrared light. Tune in as we chat about Light for Mitochondrial Health, finding the sweet spot for Red Light Therapy, and an opportunity for people to take advantage of Infrared Therapy to live a better life.  Purchase your FlexBeam device here: https://recharge.health/product/the-flexbeam?ref=5m8q8W0RgJZ93S&utm_source=go_aff_pro Coupon Code: use the code benazadi for $60 off. [00:17] Using Light to Improve Mitochondrial Health: A Biohacking Paradigm Shift Light, particularly infrared and red light, can significantly impact our biochemistry by enhancing mitochondrial health. It's an area worthy of more widespread understanding and use. The absence of health-boosting technologies like light therapy in common establishments reveals a gap in our healthcare system, highlighting the need for broader dissemination and commercial application of such health-promoting interventions. Understanding the interplay between diet, particularly keto, and biohacking strategies like light therapy can lead to more effective ways to improve health. Our perception of the sun as merely an object in the sky belies its critical role in regulating our biochemistry and overall health. Its radiant energy, especially in the infrared spectrum, profoundly influences our well-being. Infrared light, constituting over 50% of the sun's energy spectrum reaching us, has unique properties that allow it to penetrate the skin and influence deeper tissues. This highlights the potential of targeted infrared therapy to improve health at a cellular level.  [11:56] How effective is red light therapy? Hormesis, a pivotal concept to practices like the keto diet, fasting, cold exposure, and red light therapy, underscores that more is not always better. Optimal benefits lie in striking the right balance. Individuals may react differently to red light therapy, dependent on their current mitochondrial health status. It's essential to consider personal health background while designing a red light therapy regimen. The 'Goldilocks zone' for red light therapy isn't necessarily about longer exposure but the suitable duration leading to positive effects. Self-observation is crucial in optimizing the use of red light therapy. Noticing and understanding the body's response to therapy can guide frequency and intensity adjustments. Red light therapy can be effective for acute conditions, such as muscle contusions, by applying it right after the injury and before bed to stimulate recovery during sleep. Regular application over a period is usually beneficial.  [26:21] Red Light Therapy: What Is It? A Complete Guide for Beginners  Photobiomodulation, or red light therapy, isn't just beneficial for muscle repair or athletic recovery but has a profound impact on gut health due to the high concentration of light receptors in the stomach. Photobiomodulation on an empty stomach can stimulate the gut microbiome and improve overall digestive health. Implementing red light therapy into daily routines, such as morning meditation, can help reset the circadian rhythm and foster mindfulness. Red light therapy can be effective for women experiencing menstrual cramps and reproductive health issues like endometriosis. Understanding and harnessing the concentration of mitochondria in different body organs can lead to optimized benefits from photobiomodulation, promoting overall health improvement.  [28:13] Is the sun an important healthcare resource or a global threat?  The sun, often villainized due to skin cancer risks, plays a crucial role in our health and well-being, providing the body with an all-natural healing source. Although political motives exist to block sunlight to solve global warming, it's important to consider the implications of altering our natural light environment. The sun provides a full spectrum of light which contributes to the concept of photobiomodulation, which suggests that all light impacts our body differently. Near-infrared light, which the sun provides, is closely linked with mitochondrial function, demonstrating its critical role in human health. Acknowledging and discussing the significant influence of our 'light environment' on our overall health and well-being is essential.  [39:59] Safety, Contraindications, and Best Practices for Photobiomodulation Photobiomodulation is generally a safe technology, studied extensively for safety, making it suitable for many users. People with recent tattoos, particularly dark ink, should be cautious about using photobiomodulation due to potential skin sensitivity. Cancer patients and pregnant women are typically advised not to use such technology, not due to proven harm, but because ethical restrictions prevent comprehensive studies in these groups. Users should avoid looking directly into the device for an extended period because infrared light, being invisible, can harm the eyes without triggering the blinking reflex. While the FlexBeam can be used on the face for a warm glow and potential skin benefits, they are primarily designed as powerful recovery tools, not beauty devices.  [43:30] The future success of Photobiomodulation There's a growing paradigm shift in health approaches leading to more acceptance of photobiomodulation, though the term itself might not be widely known. The market could become flooded with cheap, ineffective products as the therapy becomes more mainstream, creating the risk of photobiomodulation being dismissed as a hyped trend. The advent of red light therapy as a cosmetic application, particularly facial masks, could further dilute the perception of the technology, potentially associating it with superficial or low-quality products. The future success of photobiomodulation may depend on how effectively its practitioners can differentiate quality, effective treatment devices from less beneficial products.   AND MUCH MORE!   Resources from this episode:  Purchase your FlexBeam device here: https://recharge.health/product/the-flexbeam?ref=5m8q8W0RgJZ93S&utm_source=go_aff_pro Coupon Code: use the code benazadi for $60 off. Could red light therapy be used to help us sleep and help us relax more? In this second installment of our series exploring the technology behind the handheld red light device we discuss the significance of the circadian rhythm and our ability to release the hormone melatonin.  We also explore the longer-term implications for our energy levels during the day and healthspan. Dr. Zulia Frost is a medical doctor and clinical director at Recharge Health, creators of a targeted red-light device, known as FlexBeam. In this conversation we cover:Dr. Frost explains that the technology has many applications, including the treatment of sports injuries, therapy for age-related aches and pains and as way to help improve sleep.Sleep disorders can be caused by an imbalance in the autonomic nervous system, which controls our sleep-wake cycle.Lack of sleep can lead to physical and mental fatigue, decreased cognitive function, and increased risk of accidents and mistakes.Technology and exposure to artificial light, especially blue light from screens, can disrupt our natural sleep patterns.Red light therapy, such as the FlexBeam device, can help improve sleep by stimulating the release of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep-wake cycles.Melatonin is released by the pineal gland, as well as various cells throughout the body, in response to red light.Red light therapy can also improve mitochondrial function and reduce oxidative stress, which can contribute to sleep disturbances. The optimal time and duration of red light therapy for sleep improvement may vary depending on individual needs and responses.Using red light therapy on specific areas of the body, such as the stomach, thymus, back of the neck, and sacrum, can target the release of melatonin and promote relaxation.Red light therapy should be used consistently, but not excessively, to allow the body to adapt and self-regulate melatonin production.FlexBeam red light therapyRecharge Health is offering LLAMA listeners an $80.00 discount on the purchase of FlexBeam, the wearable red light therapy device which targets key parts of the body. How often have you heard an older person refer to themselves as being so many "years young?" What about those who blame a "senior moment" for the occasional memory lapse?  These are examples of what the writer Priscilla Long describes as "toxic ageism." Oftentimes, she argues, ageist attitudes are perpetuated by the very people who're thriving in old age, but for some reason, view being old as a state of mind or body to be disavowed. Priscilla is a prolific and award-winning author of science, poetry and creative nonfiction. At the age of 79, her latest work, Dancing with the Muse in Old Age, focuses on what she calls "creative engagement" and "purposeful lifestyle traits" as a road map for the aging process.  In this LLAMA podcast interview, the Seattle-based author argues that ageism "poisons creativity" and explains why society should stop thinking of older people as "decrepit".This episode was produced in association with Clinique La Prairie.
