Summary In this episode of Blind Level Tech, the hosts discuss microphones for podcasting and voiceover recording. They start by talking about the mics they are currently using, including the Audio-Technica AT2020 condenser microphone and the CAD GXL2200. They explain the difference between condenser and dynamic microphones and the best use cases for each. They also discuss built-in microphones in devices like laptops and phones, noting that while they can be convenient, they often lack in audio quality. The hosts then explore different types of microphones in various price ranges, including USB mics, XLR mics, and headset mics. They provide recommendations for affordable microphones and caution against using headset mics for professional audio work. They also mention the Blue Yeti microphone as a versatile option with multiple polar patterns. They cover popular options like the Blue Yeti and the Shure MV7, as well as higher-end models like the AKG C414. They also mention the importance of considering the sound profile, polar patterns, and durability when choosing a microphone. The conversation concludes with a discussion about their favorite sandwiches. Takeaways Condenser microphones are good for picking up audio from the room, while dynamic microphones are better for dialogue and close-up recording. Built-in microphones in devices like laptops and phones often lack in audio quality and are not recommended for professional audio work. Affordable microphones in the $20 to $60 price range can significantly upgrade audio quality, with options like Logitech, Zeal Sound, and CAD microphones. Headset mics are convenient but may pick up vibrations from the head and produce unpleasant audio quality. They are not recommended for voiceovers. The Blue Yeti microphone is a versatile option with multiple polar patterns and a built-in sound card for monitoring and adjusting audio levels. Proper microphone placement and technique are important for achieving good audio quality. There are many microphones available for podcasting and voiceover work in the $100 to $250 price range. The Shure MV7 is a popular choice among podcasters and offers both XLR and USB options. Other options in this price range include the Blue Yeti, Audio-Technica, and Sennheiser microphones. Higher-end microphones like the Lewitt Ray and AKG C414 offer advanced features and exceptional sound quality. Consider factors like sound profile, polar patterns, and durability when choosing a microphone. Rode microphones are also worth considering for their range of podcasting options. Content is a word that gets thrown around a lot, and the truth is, today it is easier than ever before to create content. A big reason for that is thanks to companies such as Røde Microphones, which create budget-minded products that constantly push the industry forward. For Røde, innovation is the name of the game and no one knows that better than Damien Wilson, the CEO of Røde Microphones. Damien has been with the company since its early days, growing into his leadership role and scaling the business in a rapid timeframe. But even for him, despite the success, the last decade has been a wild ride.“I'm a kid from the Western suburbs, which is not necessarily a nice area and I never thought I'd be sitting in New York doing business, or sitting on a couch with Guns and Roses. When I walk into Guitar Center on Sunset Boulevard and I see a Røde product, I get excited because I listened to that music of the eighties where Sunset Boulevard was the place to be.”The transformation of the audio industry has been accelerated because of the way companies such as Rode have democratized audio equipment. It no longer takes a fortune and an entire studio build-out, to get professional-sounding content. On Marketing Trends, Damien took me through how Rode has muscled it to the top to compete with legacy brands within the space. He also touches on the unique hiring challenges that Røde has been facing in Australia during the past 18 months, and how the company has been able to pivot through innovating in their use of manufacturing equipment. He also discusses how Røde handles customer feedback to ideate its product line, and how influencers can push your products further. I'm excited for you to enjoy and hopefully learn from this conversation with Damien up next on Marketing Trends. Main TakeawaysThe Secret Sauce: Innovating with Product Manufacturing Equipment: More than ever, supply chain management and sourcing are critical to the success of any business that sells products. Finding the best, most cost-effective tools to build your products might not be created for your industry. You may have to think creatively about what other industries use similar manufacturing equipment that can be modified to build your goods. It Takes Educational Background to Create Great Content: Having an education-focused mindset is a foundational part of good content creation. When you create materials that educate the consumer on products, even if they are not your own, you're building trust with the consumer. This kind of content helps build a community which helps to further push consumers down the funnel.Where to Look for New Product Inspiration: Assess all the other products, aside from your own, that your customer also uses to see where to expand product offerings. Other tools and tech they use to create their finished product could also be an area for you to cross over into. Key Quotes“One of the things that I brought immediately to the company was that style of video-based education, style marketing. Because one of the things that I thought was the big problem with audio brands, especially anything music-related, you needed to sort of teach people how to use the product and that gave them the ability to purchase.”“We have a machine that is specked for making parts for watches. Every high-end Swiss watch manufacturer will have one of these machines. It's the same machine made by Citizen, but we use it to make backplates for the microphones because the precision and the tolerance is so insane. They're making a hundred thousand dollar Rolex's, but this is for a $200 microphone. Other mic manufacturers are not thinking in that regard; they're not thinking about how we can take that machine out of that industry, put it into our version and then create a product around it. That's really the secret sauce.” “One of the things that we did a few years ago was look at our ERP system and look at how we were running the business end-to-end, and sit there and go, ‘Okay, what are the improvements? What process improvements do we need to put in place right now?' And before we didn't have a mature supply chain team in house, but we grew that super quick. And it was just at the right time, because then COVID hit [and] we started to see some interruption in supply chains. We had the ability to be able to pivot into making things that were completely available to us onshore in Australia. That meant you needed to have the right amount of raw material and all those bits and pieces, which was a testament to the supply chain team getting an AI pay system up and running quickly.”“What we're looking at now is adjacencies that we can move into. We look at our customer and say, ‘What is our customer's workflow? What are they doing?' They're podcasters; they're content creators. ‘What sort of equipment are they using?' Oh, they're wearing headphones, and those headphones don't say Røde. So maybe we need to work into that adjacency.” “Where Røde has risen to the top in terms of customer sentiment has been the fact that we deliver a product and we keep on enhancing it. And it becomes a schedule of, every three months, let's add something else to this particular product. So the customer goes, ‘Wow, you've done it again.' And it also shows that we're listening to feedback.”“I'm a kid from the Western suburbs, which is not necessarily a nice area and I never thought I'd be sitting in New York doing business, or sitting on a couch with Guns and Roses. When I walk into Guitar Center on Sunset Boulevard and I see a Røde product, I get excited because I listened to that music of the eighties where Sunset Boulevard was the place to be.”“When you get big it's like the mistakes are just amplified, right? In the past, if we made a mistake in a launch and maybe there was a component wrong, or the testing was incorrect, you may be thinking about 5,000 units. Now you're talking about, you know, 500,000. We can't afford that. So we need to have everything upstream and downstream sorted. So we know that we're not going to replicate any of those issues.”BioDamien Wilson is the CEO of The Freedman Group, home to RØDE Microphones, Aphex, Event Electronics, and SoundField. A special extra November edition of the programme and an opportunity to hear the superb 3/12 Wurlitzer in the Victoria Hall at Saltaire near Shipley in West Yorkshire. Many people will know that the organ originally started life in the Gaumont Cinema in Oldham but after its removal from there in 1961 has has three additional homes across the pennines before its installation at Saltaire 22 years ago. We were lucky be able to record a concert on Remembrance Sunday presented by the COS Northern Society starring NICHOLAS MARTIN B.E.M. at the console but on this occasion our microphones were sited in the balcony to capture the nuances of what is regarded to be one the areas finest theatre organs. If you would like to hear the ex Oldham Wurlitzer live - organist Michael Wooldridge will be entraining next month with no doubt some seasonal favourites on Sunday December 12th at 2.30pm. for details of that telephone 0845 400 2208 after 7pm or visit www.cinema-organs.co.uk/tickets. Recording by kind permission of the artist and the COS Northern District Committee, using Zoom H4N Pro recorder, additional Rode Microphones and no post-processing or enhancements. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/communitykeyboards/message

On May 29th, 2020, I woke up at around 3am, as usual, and checked out Twitter. Tweets were all about the riots that happened the night before. I couldn't go back to sleep. I needed to do something. I needed to do a show about this. I needed to make my voice heard. Podcasting is all about storytelling - one reason why I love it so much. But what was the story I was going to tell here? I didn't want it to be a news type of episode where I blabbered off facts and numbers and the typical lines. I wanted to make a difference, in my own way and to make people realize how long this has been happening. I thought back to the days when I was obsessed with learning everything I could about Malcolm X and Martin Luther King. They were my guys. I thought of this one time when I was talking to my dad and how I said that I felt safer in the world knowing that Malcolm and Martin made it better for me and my family. This is the story I wanted to tell. It won me a runner-up prize in a contest last year sponsored by Rode Microphones. So, here it is, again for you because we need to be reminded. Here is the Rinse episode from 2020, We Shall Overcome.
I always will record on Sunday, but this one took on a special challenge. Rode Microphones has a challenge going for a two minute podcast and this is my submission. You'll see why I kept this short below. Full disclosure: concision is not my friend. I talk plenty, and sometimes it's a challenge for me not to go meandering down some mental highway, which is why I usually work my casts from notes so that I can stay on point. Getting a message into a two minute cast involved a lot of thinking this week, and with luck on my side (and zero edits) this came out to two minutes in one take. The more I thought about it, the more it mentally evolved for me that "two minutes" was a continual theme on the day I had my stroke, and you'll hear that when you listen. I thought it was enough of a coincidence that I ended up checking with my friends, as well as the people that treated me that day and they agreed: If the responding EMS bus had gotten to my place two minutes later there's no way I would have recovered. I was at the definite end of the treatment clock. So, I turned that into this week's cast and I hope you have a listen. Another full disclosure: winning in the contest isn't dependent on who gets the most listens but it does have a category for Most Popular so you can expect me to shameless self promote on the contest until it's over. Winning won't make me Joe Rogan famous, but there's a good chance at some great Rode gear for the winners. The worst thing that could happen is I don't win (and there's likely 1000's of participants, so it's a likelihood I won't), but it's worth a try right? You can see details on the contest here. Thanks for checking in and we'll talk next week. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bookofdaniel/message

Sometimes, it's a slog to produce a podcast. Coming up with new content is hard. And most studies say consistency is key - listeners should know when to expect new content. But today I'm going to give you a different angle.Don't.People have such limited attention spans - don't ask them to spend time with content that, as a creator, even YOU aren't confident in. Case in point - yesterday's press conference from Michigan's governor, Gretchen Whitmer. The CDC was pressuring her to shut the state back down, since we lead the nation in COVID numbers right now. Governor Whitmer, who, full disclosure, I'm a fan of, initially refused but called a presser yesterday afternoon. Rumors swirled about the announcement of a 45 day lockdown and more. What did the Governor do? Nothing. She emphasized the importance of vaccines, and new COVID treatments, but she changed nothing. I was expecting news, and I got none. Just more jokes about governments having meetings to decide to have a meeting. When delivery doesn't meet expectation, you turn people away. The same is true of your podcast. Which reminds me, no JAG Show next week due to some scheduling conflicts. Onto this week's news- more from Steve Goldstein and James Cridland's look at Apple's 2 million podcasts. Only EIGHT PERCENT have over 10 episodes AND have released in the last week. Competition is not as stiff as you thought. https://www.amplifimedia.com/blogstein/m7ei93yk38uivdv5llgbfkv7li87xwOn the other side of the device divide - Google Podcasts is now at 100 million installs, that's up from only 50 million 4 months ago. Podcasts hosts now say Google Podcasts is the CLEAR #3 platform behind Apple and Spotify so make sure your podcast is listed there. Theoretically, Google will crawl your podcast like a website, but you can help it along my claiming your show at https://podcastsmanager.google.com/From two of the biggest podcasters around. Mark Maron will take home the first ever Governors Award from the Podcast Academy - their highest honor . Meanwhile Spotify quietly deleted 42 more episodes of the Joe Rogan experience. I won't get into a debate about censorship here, but when you take $100 million from a company, you gotta play by their rules. Speaking of Spotify, they've debuted their own charts for top podcasts and top episodes. Beware Apple - objects in your mirror may be closer than they appear. https://newsroom.spotify.com/2021-04-14/5-fast-facts-about-spotifys-new-podcast-chartsIf you're looking to record a podcast with multiple people in the same room, Rode Microphones announced the Rode Connect, which will allow you to connect 4 of their NT USB Mini microphones to one computer with its own mixer. Definitely better than putting a Blue Yeti in the middle of a table, but I'd say beware of mic bleed. Press release, via Podnews: https://podnews.net/press-release/rode-connect Also, there is new software for the Rodecaster Pro mobile studio in Beta - I haven't tried it yet. Let someone else work out the kinks.Podcasting continues to be a silver lining in the pandemic - UK podcast host producer AudioBoom tripled their revenue in 2020 - to $26.8 million, according to Podcast Business Journal. The New York Times has it's 4th annual student podcast competition: it's open to ages 11 to 19. https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/18/learning/our-fourth-annual-student-podcast-contest.htmlLibsyn buys podcast monetization platform Glow, and Vox Media has acquired Cafe Studio, founded by former United States attorney Preet Bharara. And finally, a big piece of news in the evolution of podcasting. Gimlet Media and Bill Simmons' The Ringer, both owned by Spotify, have ratified a union contract with the Writers Guild of America, East. It establishes job security and paid vacation for writer, and get this, a starting salary of $57,000, or, roughly, three times what I made in my first radio job in 2004.If you need help getting started with your podcast, contact me via my website: https://jagindetroit.com/

Ransom Note enters the world of conversation as we launch our new Podcast series with our very own Joe Europe. Episode one is brought to you by Rode Microphones... South London's musical history goes way back but, over the last couple of years, one of the cornerstones of the scene has undoubtedly been Rye Wax. Part record shop, part music venue, part taco joint, the multifaceted organisation situated in the basement of the Bussey Building seemed to become one of the key creative hubs in Peckham almost as soon as it opened its doors. Right from the get go the Rye Wax team focused on pushing local artists, labels and parties which has given the shop a strong sense of community. But, as they mark their second birthday, has it been a smooth ride so far and what is it like to operate in a climate of club closures and tight profit margins? On a sticky night in August Joe Europe sat down with the shop's management team to chew the fat, discussing setting up the shop, the ever-changing musical landscape and watching football with Egyptian Lover. Listen to the podcast, brought to you courtesy of Rode microphones whom without this would never have been possible...
