Richard Elliott, a deputy manager in residential childcare in England, talks about his mother's childhood inside a Catholic convent and, later, a Catholic laundry in the north of England during the mid-twentieth century. Richard describes his mother's four years of separation from her family and her sisters as a child, her return home, an attack by a boyfriend at fifteen that led to her being sent away a second time, and two years of unpaid labor inside a Catholic laundry with no contact with her family. Richard also discusses discovering the full extent of his mother's story only recently, while interviewing her for a book they wrote together, and how his own work in residential childcare has changed the way he understands her. The conversation closes on Richard's petition calling on the UK government to open a public inquiry into the treatment of children in Catholic institutions in England. He argues American weakness comes from media and cultural delusions that everyone should be happy. He criticizes reliance on government "crutches and a fantasy culture fueled by TV and movies. He recalls growing up with radio, valuing imagination, and says creative people transform sadness rather than suppress it with drugs. He then advises parents to teach children reality and how to be alone and resilient. Savage then reflects on the passage of time. He ponders why the passing of time feels faster with age? He urges younger people, even those estranged from their parents, to cherish them because the bond is irreplaceable. 

The story of the Kissel brothers, two wealthy siblings murdered on opposite sides of the world within three years of each other. Robert Kissel, a Merrill Lynch executive in Hong Kong, was killed by his wife Nancy in November 2003 in a case that became known internationally as the Milkshake Murder. Less than three years later, his older brother Andrew, a Greenwich, Connecticut real estate developer facing federal fraud charges, was found stabbed to death in his own home. On the 5 September 1986, hijackers took over a Pan-American Airways flight during a stop-over at Karachi Airport in Pakistan. The armed Palestinian terrorists wanted to fly the plane to Cyprus and Israel, to free members of their organisation who were jailed there. But, after the pilots escaped the cockpit, the plane stayed on the ground for 16 hours with almost 400 passengers on board. When the power on the plane ran out – the hijackers began to shoot indiscriminately. 22 people were killed and more than 150 injured.
