Adam returns from his evacuation to Vegas with an update on the status of his condo and the surrounding structures on California's Pacific Coast Highway. He also discusses some clips that have gone viral in the wake of the wildfires, including one of a black, female, firefighter discussing the need for diversity in the LAFD and another of LA's water chief explaining why everything at the Dept. of Water & Power is done with “an equity lens.” Next, Adam recounts going through the process to become a firefighter and the one test that undid his application. He also discusses how the destruction in Los Angeles may streamline regulations when it comes to rebuilding the city, a Palisades woman ambushing Governor Newsom, and Hunter Biden losing his Malibu rental house. Then, Dawson joins to read the news including stories about Gov. Newsom issuing an executive order to suspend regulations for rebuilds, the LA fire chief saying the city failed residents in wildfire prep, and Mark Zuckerberg telling Joe Rogan that Biden officials would scream and curse when seeking removal of Facebook content. Resource scarcity has severely disrupted daily life across Central Asia this summer. Electricity failures have compelled Kyrgyzstan to declare a three-year energy emergency, starting on August 1. Additionally, much of the region is grappling with water shortages, which scientists say is the latest sign that Central Asia will be one of the regions hardest hit by climate change. Water power in underground mining has gone mainstream, Mining Weekly is told

he long-standing use of water to cool underground mines is increasingly providing the opportunity to apply the free water pressure head that this offers to energise mining equipment. High-pressure water technology, a proudly South African technology, has advanced markedly over the last couple of decades, turning South Africa into a global leader in water hydraulics for mining. “From humble beginnings back in the 80s, high-pressure water power has gone mainstream,” Hydro Power Equipment (HPE) director Ulrich Kienle told Mining Weekly in a Zoom interview this week. (Also watch attached Creamer Media video.) Some 50 different mine sites are using water hydraulics as the primary powering medium to drive rock drills and mining machines and equipment can be configured into delivering any kind of mining solution using high-pressure water power. Several mines on the Northern Limb of the Bushveld Complex have integrated modern trackless mining equipment with water hydraulics for doing board-and-pillar bolting activity - “a very interesting example of how you can fuse modern water technology with sophisticated trackless equipment”, said Kienle, who sees water energy as the opportunity for the South African mining industry to ensure longer life-of-mine and do things in a better way for the benefit of all stakeholders and society at large. Amid the Eskom power crisis and the need for sustainability, water hydraulics is on the receiving end of unprecedented recognition: "We're beginning to have the kind of conversation with the mining industry that even a decade ago was not possible because the urgency just wasn't the same as it is today,” said Kienle. “We live in a world today where sustainability, green credentials, decarbonisation are all big issues. Being able to use less energy to produce an ounce of gold or a ton of rock, and being in a position to not contaminate the environment, or precious water resources, means you're doing things in a way where the principles of ‘use less, don't contaminate and reuse' are a given with water hydraulic technology. “We've run a number of long-term production trials with some of the mining majors in both gold and platinum space and had these trials independently reviewed by third-party consultants that have put all sorts of measurement devices on to the water lines,” added Kienle, who believes that, “water ticks all the boxes”. Mining Weekly: What opposition does mining with water face in water-short South Africa? Kienle: It's one of those myths that we've worked really hard to dispel. At face value, people always say, mining with water in a water-scarce country, does it really make sense? The answer is an absolutely categorical 'yes'. Water hydraulics are efficient, they get the job done quickly; whatever water you have as a footprint on a mine site, that water is simply pressurised. It is then utilised and comes back out of the mine with the process continuing in a closed-loop cycle, with some losses to evaporation. How financially competitive is high-pressure water power? This is one of the big surprises. Initially, when water hydraulic technology was developed, it was quite expensive. Over the years, economies of scale have come into play and the technology today is surprisingly affordable. WATER HAMMER TECHNOLOGY Building blocks are available that are configured into a mining solution using water power. "Those tools all exist. What we're particularly excited about are the latest developments. The first is what we call the Isidingo drill, which is in commercial use at six of our South African mines. We have combined it with a drill guide that allows us to deliver precise drilling and, as miners will tell you, good drilling makes blasting easy and good blasting means that you get maximised rates of advance and production. It also uses much less water than prior generation water drills. "The second is about man-free boxholing. it's really quite clear that putting human beings into boxholes is p...

Glad to be back from the DDT-soaked swamps of Florida last episode, Sean and Cody are joined by Best Pick podcast host Jessica Regan for a journey into the heart of flashy pop-culture ‘90s-ness that is this 1995 science fiction comedy. In the world of Tank Girl, Earth has been desiccated by a comet and lovable desert-dwelling rogue Rebecca (Lori Petty) has the last water that hasn't been sucked up by the evil Water & Power corporation. When W&P exec Nestlē Kesslee (Malcolm McDowell) decides he's gotta have her water too, Rebecca nicks a tank and teams up with Jet Girl (Naomi Watts) to wreak some righteous revenge on the capitalist patriarchy. Environmental issues discussed include the real life water swindles, child poisonings and other horrendous deeds of Nestlē Corporation, and whether climate change is today what asteroid/comet apocalypse scenarios were in the ‘90s. How does Nestlē gain control of water resources it doesn't own, and how does it abuse the rights of indigenous peoples to choke the planet in billions of unrecycled water bottles? Did Nestlē's soulless CEO really try to tell the United Nations that water was not a human right? Speaking of that CEO, what other evil planet-killing corporation did he sit on the board of? How was the vision of Tank Girl director Rachel Talalay compromised by sexist memos from studio executives? What's the perfect age to see this movie? Is this film a noble experiment in feminism and queerness that went off the rails, or does it remain a hidden gem of ‘90s culture? How much would you pay for a prosthetic kangaroo pee-pee? Should there be a remake of this film (yes) and who should play Tank Girl? All these questions and more are rolling across the desert in this much-anticipated, long-awaited episode of Green Screen. Today, we are bringing Episode 30 back out of the vault for an encore.  The way that men can be helped to overcome the symptoms of an enlarged prostate continues to transform with minimally invasive surgical techniques. We are excited to bring back our conversation with urologist, Dr. Dean Elterman today. He will bring you up to speed with aquablation and explain how water power can be used to help men with the symptoms of an enlarged prostate. Stay tuned for more! Dr. Elterman completed residency training in urologic surgery at the University of Toronto. He then completed a fellowship in Voiding Dysfunction, Neuro-Urology, Female Urology, and Pelvic Reconstruction at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York-Presbyterian Hospital, and Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City. He has worked in the area of men's health and survivorship at the Iris Cantor Men's Health Center at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical College and the University of Toronto. He is the Medical Director of the Prostate Cancer Rehabilitation Clinic at Princess Margaret Hospital Cancer Centre. Dr. Elterman is a true innovator in men's health and continues to embrace the integration of minimally invasive surgical therapies in the management of an enlarged prostate. Be sure to listen in today to find out how water can be used for the treatment of enlarged prostate. We have taken a short break from recording any new interviews for the podcast until Season 3 arrives. We continue circling back to bring some of the more popular episodes back out of the vault. As we get closer to Season 3, Dr. Pohlman continues working behind the scenes to line up some tremendous guests for the show.  Over the last month, Dr. Pohlman has enjoyed getting to know the new members of the Prostate Health Academy following the founding members' launch. The Prostate Health Academy is now open to the public, so if you have any questions about the Academy and how it can benefit you in your prostate journey, feel free to email Dr. Pohlman at garrett.pohlmanmd@prostatehealthacademy.com. By listening to the podcast, no physician-patient relationship has been formed. For more information and counseling, you must contact your personal physician or urologist with questions about your unique situation.  Show highlights: Dr. Elterman explains how commonly men suffer from BPH, or enlargement of the prostate. Some of the symptoms of an enlarged prostate. Dr. Elterman explains how an enlarged prostate affects a man's quality of life. The long-term impact that an enlarged prostate can have on a man's bladder health. Some of the minimally invasive therapies that Dr. Elterman is currently utilizing in his practice. Dr. Elterman explains how unique aquablation technology works. What sets aquablation apart from the other therapies for an enlarged prostate. Some of the history and background of aquablation therapy. Dr. Elterman describes the appropriate candidate for aquablation therapy. Aquablation therapy works well for preserving men's sexual function. The short time it takes to perform the aquablation procedure sets it apart from other therapies. Some more advantages of aquablation therapy. What men can expect from the aquablation procedure in terms of pain and recovery time. How quickly men can expect to see an improvement after having aquablation therapy. The potential risks of the aquablation procedure. SPECIAL NOTE: One of the benefits Dr. Pohlman has gained from running this podcast is that it has challenged him to make sure that he is staying up on the latest technology available for prostate health and incorporating many of those new technologies into his clinical practice. His practice has been an early adopter of several new options for men. That has allowed his group to be one of the first in the region to offer many of them.  After airing Episode 30 about aquablation, Dr. Pohlman has continued to research the feasibility of bringing that technology to his practice to add it to his range of BPH options. He feels that aquablation will have a role in treating a subset of men with BPH. The men that will best benefit from this option might remain a moving target as Dr. Pohlman becomes more comfortable with the technology.  Dr. Pohlman feels that aquablation may be an option for many patients with very large prostates, who might not be the best candidates for the MIST therapies, including UroLift, Rezum, and Turp, which are currently being treated with robotic simple prostatectomy. While, for many of these men, it may take the place of simple robotic prostatectomy, Dr. Pohlman is not sure that robotic simple prostatectomy will go away completely, and some of those men will still benefit from that option, especially those with very large prostates or very large bladder stones as well as very large prostates that can currently be treated at the same time.  We will circle back again a year from now with an update on where we are currently. For some of the smaller prostates that are not candidates for in-office procedures like UroLift or Rezum, that are being treated with options such as transurethral resection of the prostate or TURP, Dr. Pohlman wonders if aquablation will take the place for some of those patients too. With newer techniques, such as ejaculate preserving TURP, which we recently covered in Episode 75, we are now getting close to matching some of the outcomes of aquablation in terms of ejaculate preservation. Dr. Pohlman is curious to see how the outcomes of aquablation compare to ejaculate preserving TURP as more outcomes data gets collected. Wright State University Newsroom

The greens and blues of nature have come alive on the walls of Miami Valley Hospital South. Three large, pond-inspired paintings by Wright State University alumna Jennifer Rosengarten hang high in the atrium of the hospital’s Joint and Spine Center, a new treatment facility at the hospital’s campus in Centerville. “It’s about energy and light and color,” said Rosengarten, adding that she hopes hospital patients and visitors become absorbed in the paintings’ colors and take away something positive. “I think it’s great that the hospitals and corporations want to have real art.” Rosengarten should know. Her art has also been displayed at hospitals and corporations in New York City, Cincinnati, Houston and even Costa Rica. She also recently had exhibitions at the Springfield Museum of Art and Art Access in the Columbus suburb of Bexley. Her latest installation at the hospital spine center, which features sports medicine, sports performance, pain center services and chiropractic medicine, was unveiled during a Nov. 27 ceremony. It consists of three large paintings inspired by ponds and floating aquatic lotus flowers.

One of the oldest systems of natural healing in the world uses hot and cold baths and showers to increase your vitality, balance hormones, beautify skin, tone muscles, clear your mind, and vitalize your nervous system, lymphatic system, and circulation. It quickly brings you a sense of wonderful aliveness, and all the while it is dissolving, transporting, and clearing rubbish from your body and psyche. The father of all water therapies was Father Sebastian Kneipp, the Bavarian priest who first made us aware of water's healing power. “When used appropriately,” he said, “water and herbs can cure almost every disease.” He established Bad Worishofen in Germany in 1897, a center where people all over the world came to be healed by special ice cold baths, walking barefoot in the snow, and other simple but powerful methodologies that are celebrated to this day. I first learned the secrets of water healing in my early twenties after spending many years in a state of ill health thanks to my being raised on a terrible diet. It had been based on huge bowels of breakfast cereals piled high with white sugar, horrid fast foods eaten at 5 am in truck drivers' cafes throughout America, and a lot of other junk. No wonder I was unhealthy. However, what I learned from the generosity of some brilliant British and European doctors who practiced natural medicine turned my entire life around. This was how I came to work in, write about, and teach natural methods of healing. It is also how I came to visit Kneipp's centers for hydrotherapy, which still continue to thrive, especially in Germany. In many ways the most important of all I learned was how powerful healing with simple water techniques can be for improving your life at any time. Let me share with you one of these techniques. Do try it and let me know how you get on. There are many more, but let's begin with this one. Thanks to water's chemical and bioelectrical properties, and to your body's physiological and energetic responses to them, water therapy is a superb method for cleansing, energizing, and restoring great functioning to any tired or aging body. The technique of using alternating applications of hot and cold water is called “Contrast Hydros.” If you have not yet experienced the turn-on it offers, you have a real treat ahead. After a workout, athletes use hydroelectrics in the form of contrast baths and showers to strengthen the body, prevent muscular damage, and eliminate aches. Contrast hydros not only help clear wastes and vitalize but also bring nutrients and oxygen to areas of your body that need them and balance your energies, helping to protect you from stress-induced damage. Apply hot water to your whole body for three or four minutes in the form of a hot bath or shower. Follow with 30 to 60 seconds of cold water. Repeat the procedure three times. The application of cold water needs to be just long enough to make blood vessels constrict. This can take place in as little as 20 seconds. I'd love to hear how you get on so I can share with you other hydroelectric treatments that cost virtually nothing but can be wonderfully life enhancing.

In many ways the most important of all I learned was how powerful healing with simple water techniques can be for improving your life at any time. Let me share with you one of these techniques. Do try it and let me know how you get on. There are many more, but let’s begin with this one. Here is how Apply hot water to your whole body for three or four minutes in the form of a hot bath or shower. Follow with 30 to 60 seconds of cold water. Repeat the procedure three times. The application of cold water needs to be just long enough to make blood vessels constrict. This can take place in as little as 20 seconds. Cold water triggers your sympathetic nervous system to energize while hot water intensifies parasympathetic activity for relaxation. The combination of the two makes you feel great. It’s important that you start slowly, increasing the length of your exposure to hot and cold water gradually. If you have a separate bath and shower you can use the bath for one temperature application, the shower for the other, moving back and forth. During the summer, make your bath cold and your showers hot. During the winter, reverse this. Like any natural treatment, contrast hydros need to be followed carefully and wisely to get all the benefits they offer and to make sure no harm is done. You will probably find at first that a plunge into cold water or a cold shower is a shock to your body. Soon this will turn into an experience of total pleasure. It is always the first cold application that is the hardest. The biggest barrier to getting into cold water is a psychological one. Once you leap this hurdle you’ll find yourself eagerly looking forward to your daily treatment. Here are a few cautions: Always check with your doctor before beginning any natural treatment to make sure that it is appropriate for you. He or she may advise you not to use contrast hydros if you have any kind of heart condition, nervous disorder, high blood pressure, if you are an insulin-dependent diabetic, or suffer from hardening of the arteries. Make sure your body is warm before beginning. The room should be well heated. Don’t let your body become chilled during the treatment. If you feel yourself becoming too cold, immediately stop and get into a hot bath or shower until you warm up fully. Always begin with a hot application and end with cold. Start slowly with 2-3 minutes of hot application followed by 20 seconds of cold. As your body gets used to contrast hydros, increase the time of the cold applications up to 1 minute (even up to 2-3 minutes if you are extremely fit or an athlete). When you finish, dry your body well and dress warmly. I’d love to hear how you get on so I can share with you other hydroelectric treatments that cost virtually nothing but can be wonderfully life enhancing.

Hydroelectric power is booming in Romania. Government subsidies are drawing more and more investment into the sector. Conservationists, however, argue that while hydropower does not produce greenhouse gases, too many dams could cause entire rivers to dry up in the summer. They point to the southern Carpathian Mountains, where about 500 hydroelectric power plants - some still being built - are located. The wild rapids at these sites are particularly lucrative for investors. At the same time, many of the projects are also located in conservation areas, and the damage to habitats is severe. Residents of the region are fighting to keep the remaining streams and rivers in Romania untouched.
