This summer, we're sharing re-released episodes of rabble radio from our archives as we mark 25 years of rabble.ca. New interviews will return in September. This week's re-released episode takes us back to November 2009 with a segment from episode 94 of rabble radio. In this archival feature, we revisit a conversation originally broadcast by Red Eye—the long-running progressive podcast that was a staple of rabble's podcast network. The interview features David Eby, then, the executive director of the BC Civil Liberties Association and now the premier of British Columbia, discussing the province's controversial plans to displace Vancouver's unhoused population ahead of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. As Vancouver takes the global stage once again, this time for the FIFA World Cup, looking back at Eby's sharp critiques of state displacement feels incredibly informative—and perhaps a little hypocritical. We also look back at a vital conversation for Pride Month. Meagan Perry speaks with Arthur Kisenyi about the legislative landscape for queer people in Uganda. Unfortunately, in the years since this interview first aired, Uganda has passed even harsher laws, making it one of the most dangerous places in the world to be queer. It's a reminder of how much is at stake, and how the fight for global queer liberation continues.

A brand's advertising is its identity showing up in public, and it tells you what that brand is about to do next. In this episode of Content Amplified, Karisa Schroeder, who works on GTM strategy at MediaRadar, explains how to use ad intelligence as a window into what brands are actually doing rather than just saying. Karisa walks through reading a competitor's next move from their creative, spend, pricing, partnerships, and sponsorships, and she expands the familiar share of voice and share of spend into share of message: do you own a category, and if not, where is the white space you can claim. She points to Airbnb at the Winter Olympics becoming the official sponsor of feeling at home instead of the official sponsor of lodging, and she frames brand building as a community you create, telling marketers to make it the party people want to be a part of. She closes with where to start: your own first-party data on the channels you already run, then enrichment to fill in the rest of the picture. If you want to turn the ad world into a competitive intelligence feed, tune in.About KarisaKarisa Schroeder works on GTM strategy at MediaRadar, where she focuses on the advertising space. She is in roughly her ninth year in product marketing and has been a marketer for about 15 years. She is well known in location intelligence, where her work centered on segmentation, behaviors, and demographics across the US, and she now applies that lens to advertising. She builds the tools she uses as a marketer every day, and she is a big advocate for connecting with people in the community.Show NotesConnect with Karisa on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/karisaschroeder/Text us what you think about this episode!

We're traveling back in time to the Cortina 1956 Winter Olympics to hear all about the bobsled (or bobsleigh) competition. These Games saw some big changes: New rules about weight and new types of sleds. Cortina 1956 was the first Olympics for Italian Eugenio Monti, whose results put him on the road to becoming a local hero and one of the best bobsled drivers of all time. Bobsled also featured some sibling rivalry, royalty and the last American medal before a decades-long dry spell. Weather impacted the bobsledders in a bad way. Did Mother Nature have something against the Swiss? Come along on a wild ride through the icy bobsled track of Cortina. Thank you to our ongoing contributors and patrons! This week Nicola and Di chat with the legendary Steven Bradbury. All of our Australian listeners, and many of our international listeners as well, will remember the epic moment in 2002 when Steven became the first Australian ever to win a Gold medal at the Winter Olympics. It was such a memorable race as Steven came from behind to win the final, and in doing so, created the term ‘Doing a Bradbury’, which was added to the Macquarie Dictionary in 2014. However, there’s so much more to Steven’s story than that one moment, and we were so grateful to be able to hear more about his journey of strength, passion and resilience. In this episode, we chat to Steven about his speed skating career and some of the most heart-stopping moments, including 2 specific crashes where he almost lost his life. It’s incredible to hear Steven talk about the incident in Montreal where he lost ¾ of his blood in 1 minute, and his next significant injury, 18 months out from his final Olympics, when he broke his neck in training. The sheer determination and resilience that Steven showed to keep going and pursue Gold is incredibly inspiring. We also walk through that famous final and unbelievable moment with Steven. What was happening in the lead-up to the race, the strategy that he and his coach decided on, and what it felt like to watch everyone fall over in front of him, win Gold, but have the entire crowd booing because the local favourite had gone down in the fall. We chat about Steven’s new career as a motivational speaker and entrepreneur, the incredible work ethic he has, the way he’s fuelled by adrenaline and the brewery he started, with the best name ever, Last Man Standing. Steven has some great tips on finding your passion, working really hard at it, and not giving up too early. We really loved having Steven in the studio with us, hearing his story and sharing some laughs. We’re not the only ones who think his story is incredible, it turns out a film is going to be made about his life, which we also chat about in this episode. We hope you love it as much as we did. The team event consisted of competitions in men's singles, women's singles, pair skating, and ice dance. Skaters and teams earned points based on their placements in each event, and the medalists were determined based on the total points earned. The team representing the Russian Olympic Committee originally finished in first place, while the team from the United States finished second, and the Japanese team finished third. However, when it was revealed that a positive test confirming the presence of a banned substance was received from a sample submitted by Kamila Valieva of Russia, the medal ceremony was postponed. After nearly two years of litigation, Valieva's scores were stricken and the newly tabulated results placed the American team first, the Japanese team second, and the Russian team third. Phill Drobnick (@CoachPhill) recently retired as the National Team Director at USA Curling after the 2026 Milan Olympics, bringing an end to nearly two decades of coaching experience at the international level. Since 2005, Phill has been instrumental in guiding Team USA to international success, including notable achievements at the Olympics and World Championships. Phill's coaching highlights include guiding Team USA to the Junior Men's World Championship in 2008, and more recently, orchestrating the unforgettable gold medal win for Team Shuster at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. That victory was the U.S.'s first-ever Olympic gold in curling. He was back in Pyeongchang in 2023, where Korey Dropkin and Cory Christensen clinched the first-ever Mixed Doubles World Championship for the U.S. Phill also had his share of learning experiences, including serving as Head Coach at the 2010 Winter Olympics, where he gained valuable insights through the team's challenges. This experience informed his subsequent role as Project 2018 National Coach, where he worked with athletes identified as potential Olympians. His promotion to Men's National Coach in 2014 saw him leading Team Shuster into the 2018 Olympic Games. From 2018 to 2022, Phill served as the Men's and Mixed Doubles National Coach, and at the 2022 Olympics, he was the National Coach for the Men's, Women's, and Mixed Doubles teams. In our discussion today we take a deep dive into the intricacies of curling, the intense training the athletes do, and even cover some of the highlights and lowlights of the 2026 Winter Olympics. For Mental Health Awareness Month, we welcome back Jenny Sichel to talk about her experiences with being an elite athlete while managing Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Jenny is a coxswain who competed with both able-bodied and para rowing crews. We talked with her about being misdiagnosed for years, the work that went into taking control of her condition, and how it affected her as an elite athlete. You can learn more about OCD at the International OCD Foundation: iocdf.org. Find Jenny on LinkedIn, Insta, and Facebook. Also on the program: The Interntional Ski & Snowboard Federation had plenty of thoughts about how the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics went. Plus, the Milano Cortina Organizing Committee may have more budgetary issues with the ice hockey arena. LA 2028 announced its Cultural Olympiad. SEASON 2 - EPISODE 194 Buddy Squires - Cinematographer In this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast, we speak with cinematographer Buddy Squires (THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION, BEYOND THE BEACH: THE HELL AND THE HOPE, BASEBALL). Buddy has worked on countless documentaries, ranging from vérité to recreations, and we spend the episode discussing how he sees his work and what he tries to achieve while capturing images of events happening in real time. Buddy has also worked with director Ken Burns since they met in college, and he gives us insight into their lifelong collaboration and their approach to portraying history. Buddy also recalls the winding path he took to reach documentary filmmaking, and he reflects on the filmmakers, photographers, and films that inspired him the most at the time. Buddy later reflects on his experiences shooting the humanitarian work featured in BEYOND THE BEACH across the Middle East, and we ask him if he feels documentaries can make a difference. We also discuss how digital camera technology has made Buddy's job easier, and he shares his review of the drone footage from the 2026 Winter Olympics. - This episode is sponsored by Aputure
She competed three months ago at the Winter Olympics in Italy as a member of Team USA bobsled. She is a three-time NCAA indoor pentathlon champion, having competed for the Fighting Irish at the University of Notre Dame. She competed at two U.S. Olympic Team Trials (Track & Field) and finished fifth in the women's heptathlon at the U.S. national championships in 2025. She started in bobsled in August 2025 and made the U.S. Bobsled team for the 2025-26 season as a push athlete. At her IBSF World Cup debut later that year in Latvia, she would finish fourth in two-woman Bobsled and be named to her first Olympic team for the Games earlier this year in Milano Cortina.
The boys E. Wright and Wintercoat Romes return with another layered conversation covering music, culture, mental health, sports, and personal reflection. The episode kicks off with news surrounding the Olympic Winter Games, Dave Chappelle coming to Minnesota, LaRussell signing with Roc Nation, and reactions to Super Bowl 60 and its surrounding controversy. The boys then dives into this year's Grammys, debating major winners, the evolution of hip-hop, celebrity responsibility, and whether today's music industry truly rewards artistry. From Kendrick Lamar and Bad Bunny to Clipse, Tyler, The Creator, and J. Cole's “The Fall Off,” the conversation gets deep fast. The heart of the episode centers around repeating patterns — why we stay stuck in cycles, why familiarity can feel safer than growth, and how self-awareness becomes the first real step toward change. It's an honest conversation about burnout, comfort zones, trauma, accountability, and learning how to recognize the habits that hold us back.Episode 148 is all about self-awareness, growth, and recognizing the patterns we keep repeating in life.
In our year-long look back at the Cortina d'Ampezzo 1956 Winter Olympics, we take to the slopes of the Tofane in the Dolomites to explore the Alpine skiing competition. With three events for men and women alike, athletes thrilled spectators on the slopes. The clear hero of Alpine skiing--and of these Olympics--was Austrian Toni Sailor. Hear how experts discounted his talents and how he almost didn't make a competition. On the women's side, hear how a pharmacy student surprised everyone in the slalom. Plus, Japan wins its first-ever Winter Olympic medal. Find out who raced to national glory and made the podium! All this, plus more amazing stories from the seventh Winter Olympic Games. In this episode of the Science for Sport Podcast, Richard Graves is joined by Olympic silver medallist and high performance coach Eric Franke. Eric competed for Germany in bobsleigh, winning Olympic silver in Pyeongchang 2018 alongside multiple World Championship medals across two-man and four-man competition. Since retiring from elite competition, he has moved into high performance coaching, working with athletes in speed development, sprint mechanics and sliding sports. This conversation explores what it really takes to perform under Olympic pressure, the physical demands of bobsleigh, and why speed still doesn't always get the attention it deserves in team sport environments. Eric breaks down the qualities needed to accelerate a heavy sled on ice, the difference between being fast and being effective in a sport-specific context, and why developing speed requires more than simply adding sprint drills into a programme. He also reflects openly on his own career, including the mistakes he made as an athlete, the value of testing and tracking progress honestly, and how his coaching philosophy has developed around communication, individualisation and helping athletes become more independent decision-makers. For sports science professionals, coaches and practitioners working in elite sport, this episode offers a detailed look at speed development, athlete management, pressure, and the transition from elite performer to high performance coach. In this episode you will learn What it feels like to compete at the Olympic Games and handle pressure when medals are expected The role of the brakeman in bobsleigh and why the start phase is so technically and physically demanding Why sprint speed does not always transfer directly into bobsleigh performance The key physical qualities behind acceleration, rate of force development and efficient movement Why speed training needs to be prioritised properly within the weekly training structure How plyometrics, jumping and coordination can support speed development Why Eric believes athletes can sometimes spend too much time in the gym The importance of testing, measuring and honestly tracking progress How Eric's experience as a self-coached athlete now shapes the way he coaches others Why experienced athletes often need guidance, guardrails and conversation rather than simply being told what to do How coaches can adapt communication to the individual athlete in front of them Why Eric's ultimate coaching goal is to create “sovereign athletes” who can make better decisions when the coach is not there About Eric Franke Eric Franke is a former German bobsleigh athlete and Olympic silver medallist. He competed at the highest level in both two-man and four-man bobsleigh, winning silver at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang and multiple medals at World Championship level. Since retiring from competition, Eric has moved into high performance coaching, with a particular focus on speed development, sprint performance and athlete decision-making. He works with athletes across different performance environments, including bobsleigh and skeleton, helping them improve physical qualities while developing a deeper understanding of their own training process. His coaching approach is shaped by his own experience as an elite athlete, combining technical speed development with individualised communication, clear training frameworks and an emphasis on helping athletes become more self-sufficient. It's the scandal that derailed Today Show anchor Matt Lauer's career. An NBC staffer accused him of continuous sexual abuse that began at the 2014 Winter Olympics, which he denied. Now, she's written a book saying what she went through was so traumatic, she was left with PTSD. And a fun day on the water for two surfers turned into a terrifying race for their lives. The two say they were chased by a great white shark! They spoke with Jim Moret about the scare. Plus, despite the fact the attack on the White House Correspondent's Dinner was caught on video, there are conspiracy theories running rampant that it was “staged”, and as Les Trent reports, that's upsetting people who attended the event and are still traumatized. And it should have been the happiest time of her life, her wedding weekend - but her celebration weekend was ruined when she was pulled over and arrested for DUI. However, she wasn't drunk or on drugs at all. The charges were later dropped and she is suing the police claiming she was wrongfully arrested. the police deny any wrongdoing. Your confidence might be more fragile than you think. Most people define confidence as certainty. "Nothing will go wrong." "I've got this." "I'm built for this moment." But what happens when something DOES go wrong? In this episode of Coming Up Clutch with J.R.™, J.R. sits down with 4-time Olympian, Ruben Gonzalez – the first person in history to compete in four Winter Olympics across four different decades. Ruben completely reframes how you think about identity, fear, and confidence. Ruben has raced at 80+ miles per hour down an icy track and he'll be the first to tell you he was scared. How did he overcome his fears? Not his circumstances. Not the pressure. It was his focus. And his definition of confidence. This episode is about one simple truth: Confidence isn't believing nothing will go wrong. It's knowing you can respond when it does. In this episode, you'll hear: How identity drives performance (and why your mindset will never outperform the identity you've chosen). The powerful reframe that helped Ruben eliminate fear in high-pressure moments. Why narrowing your focus to the next 10 minutes can neutralize overwhelm and unlock flow. The difference between fragile confidence ("nothing will go wrong") and durable confidence ("I can handle it if it does"). How visualization isn't just about perfect outcomes. It's about rehearsing recovery. Why success is ultimately a decision and what changes the moment you become willing to do what you weren't willing to do yesterday. Oura may be best known for its sleek smart ring, but its bigger ambition is changing how people think about health. In this episode of The Big Impression, CMO Doug Sweeny joins hosts Damian Fowler and Ilyse Liffreing to unpack how a wearable brand is translating complex data into something people actually use and act on. The timing is global. As the official wearable of the Winter Olympics, Oura stepped into one of the world's biggest stages. But instead of leaning into peak performance alone, the brand took a different angle: focusing on everyday habits like sleep, recovery and stress that shape long-term health. That approach comes from how Oura sees itself. Under the hood, it's as much a health care company as a tech brand, built on medical research and biometric data. But on the surface, it's something far more human: a tool that helps people understand their bodies in real time. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Emily gifts Laci and producer Jess some homemade earrings before diving into the messy story of French Olympic skier Julia Simon, who was convicted of committing credit card fraud against her teammate. Then, they discover Sturla Holm Lægreid, a Norwegian biathlete who won a bronze medal and admitted to cheating on his girlfriend of six months. Plus, shout-out to Flavor Flav for helping sponsor women athletes. Stay schemin'! Check out Emily's podcast, "Free With Ads," wherever you get your podcasts.
