A man with a fairytale castle in upstate New York who keeps trying to make a self-produced reality show about "princesses" happen — and become a modern-day Hugh Hefner. A man who got famous on YouTube for lawn care who ends up filming himself as a baby — and has a SWAT team called to his house. These stories form the backbone of Jon Ronson's journey into the world of "unraveling men." Those two men's stories are exceptional, but they're also an entry point into a subject area I like to think of as "WTF is going on with dudes right now." Join Jon and me as we avoid the usual discussion about "toxic masculinity" and go deeper into friend-less-ness, algorithms, purposelessness, Sad Dads, and male buffoonery. It's a wild ride that felt like the beginning of a much longer conversation (that I hope we can keep having in the comments)! At college, young people have the opportunity to get to know peers from different ethnic, social, and political backgrounds. As a result, they meet students who see the world in completely different ways. So what should happen when students encounter ideas, histories, or each other in ways that make them deeply uncomfortable? Avoiding those conversations may reduce conflict in the short term. Simply encouraging students to “speak freely” isn't enough either. Without trust and skill, difficult conversations can reinforce divisions instead of bridging them. Professors and other educators can provide guidance drawing from a wide array of sources and points of view. But how can educators teach healthy constructive ways to engage with new ideas and different perspectives, especially in an age of polarization? Universities have become one of the places where America's conflicts over race, history, identity, and free expression play out most intensely. In the 2010s many scholars adopted a more critical view of American history and how it shaped our present. But the past few years have seen a roll-back of racial studies programs and diversity initiatives. Universities around the country have opened civics education centers, in some cases as a way of restoring a more traditional take on history. Our two guests this episode are professors who teach divisive topics including race in America and the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. They've each found ways to engage students and create classroom cultures based on curiosity and respect. And they're leading the way for other educators. Stephanie Shonekan is Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Maryland. While chair of the Black Studies Department at the University of Missouri, Stephanie created and ran several programs geared towards inclusion and diversity. She's also an ethnomusicologist, and uses music to address difficult topics in class. She's the co-author of the book Race and the American Story. John Rose is a professor of the practice at the School of Civic Life and Leadership at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. He teaches several courses on civil discourse, including one titled “How to Think in an Age of Polarization,” which has inspired similar classes at colleges across the country. He holds a doctorate in theology. The North Carolina State Wolfpack face ACC runner-up Virginia in a Week 0 matchup that catches everyone's eye. Is this is the beginning of a great year for NC State? Quarterback CJ Bailey must lead the way, and the defense must stop the run. Then, it's about the Wolfpack's season goals. Can Dave Doeren's squad finally seize double-digit wins with new weapons like JoJo Trader and Duke Scott in tow? NC State's retooled attack, with explosive speed from its Miami imports and the bruising presence of Popo Aguirre, aims to dominate, while key ACC rivals like Louisville and Virginia pose the first true tests. Brian Smith, Grayson Boone, and Kenton Gibbs assess the Wolfpack's path, highlighting concerns around defensive pass rush and potential trap games against Wake Forest and Syracuse. Insightful stats, depth chart analysis, and the “law of the wolf” curse take center stage as the hosts debate whether this NC State team can buck history and stake its claim as an ACC contender. As the poet says: Grease is the word. So, how'd that go?But first, the gals talk about the unrivaled beautiful soul of Dolly Parton, whose death at 80 arrived yesterday. The tributes poured in (Eminem?), and there can never be enough, but the passing feels culturally momentous. Is this the unofficial end of the America century — or the American dream? Also discussed:* “WTF did Jolene look like?!” * “Swagoo”* The Osmonds weren't slutty, as far as we know* Newsflash: the feminists didn't like a woman* “Bite the weenie, Rizzo.” / “With relish.” * Sarah punts her mother to voicemail* The awesomeness of telling men they are handsome* “Smell my Calvins”?* The wonder of John Travolta dancing.* Sarah casts a Heterodox Grease: Moynihan as Kenicke, Rosenfield as Marty, Rommelmann as Frenchy. (Sarah as Sandy, obvs.)* BUT WHO PLAYS DANNY? One hint: Three men — a sweetheart and genius of a podcaster, an Italian stallion, and a brainiac born to hand jive, babeeeePlus, Nancy counteracts Grease with another ‘80s classic, what it's like growing up in the eye of the (imaginary) camera, Dolly's letter to Eminem, and more!Do you love Dolly? Cathy and Todd discuss St. Elmo's Fire for Movies We LOVE and LOVE to Make Fun Of month, the 1985 classic that made $37.8 million on a $10 million budget despite critics disliking it. They get into the David Blum "Hollywood's Brat Pack" article that changed everyone's careers overnight, Andrew McCarthy's book and documentary about being labeled a Brat, and then go over the movie's genuinely alarming WTF moments like Kirby's rewarded stalking arc, Billy pushing past Jules's "no," and his "there was no St. Elmo's Fire, you're making it up" non-help speech — before landing on their red flags list for the movie's worst behavior and the quotes they still can't stop repeating ("Wasted Love!").

In The Loop kicks off the show discussing the uncertainty surrounding Joe Espada's future with the Astros following the departure of general manager Dana Brown. With conflicting reports about Espada's status and what conversations he may have had about his future, ITL asks the bigger question: Does it even matter at this point? The conversation then shifts to the Texans following their trade for Kayshon Boutte, as the guys debate whether adding another weapon to the receiving corps is enough to make them confident in the offense after losing Jayden Higgins for the season. The first hour wraps with the Question of the Day: What are the best uniforms in life — not just sports? ITL then goes Around The NFL, reacting to the biggest news, roster moves, and storylines from across the league as the regular season approaches. The conversation shifts back to the Astros as the guys ask what happened to the Astros general manager job. Following Dana Brown's departure, ITL examines how the position has evolved under Jim Crane, how much power the next GM could actually have, and what Houston needs from whoever eventually takes over. The hour wraps with What's Popping, covering the biggest trending stories from sports and entertainment. Later, ITL has some fun with another game of Would Ya Rather, forcing the guys to choose between some tough, ridiculous, and hilarious scenarios. The crew then opens the floor for another edition of ITL Lunch-Time Confessions, with the guys and listeners getting a few things off their chest. The hour wraps with College Football on a Tuesday, as ITL dives into the biggest conversations and storylines around college football with the 2026 season getting ready to kick off. The final hour begins with ITL reacting to Texans tight end Foster Moreau's comments following practice, discussing what the veteran had to say and what his role could look like in Houston's offense this season. The show wraps with Figgy's Mixtape, leading with BREAKING NEWS of the death of country music icon Dolly Parton at the age of 80. Figgy and the guys react to the loss of one of the most influential entertainers of all time before diving into some WTF news out of Baltimore, the drama involving Enes Kanter and the WNBA, and more wild stories to close out the show.

Welcome to our new season, all about movies that appear to have been greenlit by a bag of cocaine! We've mentioned a lot of these in passing before but now we're taking a deep dive into the shallow end, starting with The Apple, one of the most WTF films ever made! Is it a cautionary tale about the corrupting influence of fame? An allegory for totalitarianism? A retelling of Genesis? Yes, and so much less! Do you look back at your sex ed classes and wonder WTF?! Are you a parent looking at your kid's curriculum and asking the same question? Sex Education 101: Approachable Essays on Folklore, Culture, & History (Fox Folk Press, 2023) is less of a how-to of sex education and more of a why. Why does abstinence-only sex ed receive so much federal funding? Why do instructors show gross images of STIs to scare students? The answers, believe it or not, have a lot to do with folklore. Folklore—informally transmitted traditional culture—has a lot to say about sex. And it is often people's first point of contact with information and messages about sex. Folklore encompasses urban legends, moral panics, and rumors, which influenced early U.S. policies around sex, and also includes jokes, raunchy folk songs, and beliefs and slang about menstruation or STIs. And thus, folklore shapes sex ed classrooms and school sex ed policies. Jeana Jorgensen earned her PhD in folklore at Indiana University. She is a lecturer in anthropology at Butler University and part of the editorial team at Marvel's & Tales. Her books include Folklore 101 (2021), Fairy Tales 101 (2022), and Sex Education 101 (2023), and her work has appeared in the Journal of American Folklore, Fabula, Journal of Folklore Research, and elsewhere. Y'all sent us some GOOD ones this week! We've got a day on the lake that goes very wrong, a giant mystery snake that turns out to have a wild explanation, and a haunted 100-year-old house where something decides to stand at the end of the bed and pretend to be someone it definitely is not. Then we meet “Ghost Guy,” who may have attached himself to one of our listeners when she was a teenager. We're talking footsteps around the bed, whispers in the middle of the night, a homemade Ouija board, and then... he just disappears. Where the hell did he go?! Basically, it's another completely normal Thursday around here. Got a creepy, paranormal, funny, or downright WTF story? Send it our way for a future Sinister Sightings!
