When life hands you a diagnosis, how do you respond? For me and my husband, Darren, our journeys couldn't have looked more different. When Darren was diagnosed with grade 4 brain cancer, he faced it with an unshakable calm. He trusted his treatment plan and never felt the need to overhaul his habits or add anything extra. Meanwhile, when I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021, I was overwhelmed with fear and worry. I wanted to change everything—my food, my environment, my routines—because I felt like I had no control. But as I dive deeper into Dr. Lissa Rankin's book Mind Over Medicine, I've realized something powerful: You can drink all the green juices, do every workout, and take every supplement, but if your mindset is consumed by stress, fear, or negativity, true healing can't take root. In this episode, I share: The very different ways Darren and I processed our cancer diagnoses What I've learned about the role of belief and mindset in healing Why emotional recovery is just as important as physical recovery How small daily practices like gratitude, meditation, and mindful living can shift everything Whether you're navigating your own diagnosis, supporting someone you love, or simply looking to live with more peace and purpose—this conversation is for you. ___________________________________________________________________________

Investing in Yourself: How Your Choices Shape Your Self-Image Self-image is essentially how we perceive ourselves, shaped by our thoughts, beliefs, and experiences. Tonya Leigh explores the profound connection between the investments we make—whether in time, money, or energy—and the evolution of our self-image. This exploration is particularly relevant for women seeking to elevate their self-perception and overall life experience. Tonya emphasizes that our self-image acts as a lens through which we view our capabilities and potential. When we invest in ourselves, we are not merely acquiring things; we are affirming our worth and expanding our identity. She emphasizes the importance of the energy behind our investments, highlighting that buying from a place of fear or scarcity often leads to disappointment. Instead, she encourages listeners to invest from a mindset of deserving and self-worth, exemplified by her own experience purchasing a designer handbag as a step towards embracing a new identity. That Anxiety Guy - Straight Talk And Help With Anxiety, Panic and Agoraphobia
Send in a question or comment via text.If you're struggling with anxiety disorders and constantly being told you need a positive mindset, stronger beliefs, and better motivation to recover, this episode is for you. I'm breaking down why these three concepts are tragically misunderstood and misapplied in anxiety recovery—and why they might actually be keeping you stuck. What You'll Learn:Why you can't just "decide" to believe in yourself or adopt a positive mindsetThe counterproductive fantasy that words will change how you think and feelWhy motivation follows action, not the other way aroundHow to work with your current negative beliefs instead of fighting themThe only "mindset" that actually matters in recoveryWhy it's normal (and okay) to doubt yourself and lack motivationEpisode Timestamps:[0:00 - 3:30] Introduction and why belief, mindset, and motivation advice often backfires[3:30 - 6:00] The fantasy that words will fix us and why we want to avoid difficult action[6:00 - 9:30] Where bad advice comes from and why helpers sometimes rely on oversimplified approaches[9:30 - 12:30] Why you can't manufacture beliefs, mindset, or motivation on demand[12:30 - 16:30] The reality: action comes before belief change, not after[16:30 - 19:00] The only mindset that matters: awareness over positivity[19:00 - 23:00] Why it's normal and okay to have negative beliefs and lack motivation[23:00 - 27:00] Challenging helpers who rely on "you just need to want it more"[27:00 - 29:30] Final thoughts and permission to be where you are right nowKey Takeaways:You don't need to wake up believing you're a warrior who can vanquish anxiety. You don't need a positive mindset or perfect motivation. What you need is willingness to take small risks and experiment with new behaviors, even when everything inside you is saying "don't do that." Recovery happens when you act anyway—despite doubt, fear, and negative beliefs.Remember: if you're struggling to "just think positive" or get motivated, that's not a character flaw. You're encountering advice that doesn't match how humans actually change and recover from anxiety disorders. For full show notes on this episode:https://theanxioustruth.com/324Support The Anxious Truth: If you find the podcast helpful and want to support my work, you can buy me a coffee. Episode Summary: What happens when we reduce the church's mission to saving souls while neglecting culture? In this episode, Scott Allen and teammates, Luke and John, share the story of how the Disciple Nations Alliance grew out of a moment of repentance over thirty years ago—a moment that sparked a vision to equip local churches as God's primary agents for discipling nations, not just growing congregations. In light of this vision, we believe there is a unique opportunity for the Church today, as we sit at a pivotal civilizational moment. We are witnessing an unlikely resistance to the four powerful ideological “waves”—Marxism, sexual revolution, radical Islam, and corrupt Western elitism—that are seeking to reshape societies around the world. Surprisingly, this resistance is being led outside the Church, as prominent secular thinkers rediscover the neglected message of Christianity and boldly point out that biblical principles provide the foundation for free and just societies. In this conversation, we reflect on how to promote this crucial message and what it truly means to embrace Christ's lordship over every sphere of life. We call the Church to repent from a narrow understanding of mission and reclaim our role in transforming culture. Through personal stories, biblical insights, and practical vision, we invite you to discover how the Church can disciple nations and create societies that reflect God's character.Who is Disciple Nations Alliance (DNA)? Since 1997, DNA's mission has been to equip followers of Jesus around the globe with a biblical worldview, empowering them to build flourishing families, communities, and nations.

In this episode, Adam Roach and Jess Webber explore the reasons why willpower is ineffective for building lasting habits. They emphasize the importance of designing one's environment to support success, aligning habits with personal vision and goals, and establishing systems that facilitate habit formation rather than relying solely on motivation. The discussion highlights practical strategies for creating an environment conducive to habit-building and the significance of clarity in one's objectives.TakeawaysWillpower is not a reliable method for building habits.Your environment plays a crucial role in habit formation.Design your physical and digital spaces for success.Align your habits with your long-term vision.Avoid arbitrary habits that don't serve your goals.Focus on one channel for marketing to avoid dilution.Consistency is key, even when it feels boring.Systems can save you time, energy, and money.Your audience sees less than 18% of your marketing efforts.Belief in your process is essential for overcoming challenges.Chapters00:00 Understanding Willpower and Habit Formation06:41 Designing Your Environment for Success13:14 The Importance of Systems Over Motivation
When high-profile food critic and journalist Giles Coren revealed he had begun attending church as a 'lapsed atheist' he joined an increasing number of people now using that label to describe themselves. Justin Brierley investigates why other public figures like Konstantin Kisin, Louise Perry, Niall Ferguson, James Lindsay and Carl Benjamin are trying out church as 'lapsed atheists'. He also hears from a new breed of thinking atheists - Alex O Connor (aka Cosmic Skeptic) and Joe Folley (aka Unsolicited Advice) on what it would take for them to believe. But what moves 'lapsed atheists' towards Christian faith? Ross Douthat, author of 'Believe: Why everyone should be religious' offers advice, and Luke Thornton a young convert from atheism to Christianity tells his story. Send us a textEpisode Notes: When we talk about proving the resurrection, we usually reach for the familiar arguments — the authority of Scripture, the empty tomb, the eyewitnesses. Those are strong, solid, and true. But in 1 Corinthians 15, Paul takes an unexpected path.In this message, we explore three of Paul's strange but powerful arguments for the resurrection — ones you won't often hear in an apologetics book, but that cut straight to how we live, who we walk with, and what we're willing to risk for Christ.Paul's logic is simple but searching: if there is no resurrection, then why endure suffering, why pursue holiness, why sacrifice for the gospel? But if there is a resurrection — and there is — then everything changes.Belief in the resurrection isn't just about proving a point — it's about shaping a life.Because if Christ is risen, then living for Him is not only worth it — it's the only thing that makes sense.Support the showTo listen to my monthly church history podcast, subscribe at; https://thehistoryofthechristianchurch.buzzsprout.com For an ad-free version of my podcasts plus the opportunity to enjoy hours of exclusive content and two bonus episodes a month whilst also helping keep the Bible Project Daily Podcast free for listeners everywhere support me at;|PatreonSupport me to continue making great content for listeners everywhere.https://thebibleproject.buzzsprout.com
Kia ora e te whānau. This week, Ali Pottinger and Matt Rayment speak to Sean Conway, the Zimbabwe-born, UK-based endurance adventurer whose life has been one long refusal to do things by halves. Sean's palmarès reads like a dare whispered at closing time: cycling around the world, swimming the length of Great Britain, running across it, and then becoming the first person to complete a length-of-Britain triathlon. He's broken the world record for the most Ironman triathlons completed on consecutive days, and carved out a niche as one of the great eccentrics of adventure sport— with his signature beard and being, as he puts it, part-terrier part-monkey. Whether he's towing logs up mountains, riding Penny Farthings for charity, running the London Marathon dressed as Big Ben or pushing the boundaries of human endurance, Sean's mission has always been the same: inspire others to dream bigger, be braver, and live a little wilderDirt Church Radio – Best Enjoyed Running.--- --- ---Episode LinksSean Conway HomeSean Conway Instagram Sign up for the DCR AidStation newsletterThe Squadrun 4-Week Training Trial for DCR Listeners!Dirt Church Radio on InstagramDirt Church Radio on FacebookFurther Faster New ZealandEnjoy!Music by Andrew McDowall, Digicake
My guest is Dr. David DeSteno, PhD, a professor of psychology at Northeastern University. We discuss science, God and religion, including what science can and can't reveal about the existence of God and where religious faith and science do and do not align. We also discuss why questions about life's origins, miracles and the afterlife have persisted across time. Dr. DeSteno explains how religious rituals cause meaningful improvements in mental and physical health and how prayer and gratitude can markedly reduce stress, increase honesty and compassion and buffer against loneliness and despair. Finally, we explore what distinguishes religions and mission-based communities from cults, and we discuss the role that communities such as 12-step and Burning Man play in modern life. The ‘Great Moon Hoax' was published by the New York Sun on 25th August, 1835, claiming over six instalments that renowned English astronomer John Herschel had spotted bat-men, unicorns, and bipedal beavers on the lunar surface. Despite the absurdity of the claims, the tale was so wild and well-written that many readers bought into it. The mastermind behind the hoax, Richard Adam Locke, later tried to justify his actions by claiming it was a satire meant to expose the ridiculousness of some contemporary scientific theories. Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how the Sun used the horrors of slavery to account for its deception; consider how the story spread all the way to Italy; and reveal why Edgar Allen Poe was particularly unimpressed by the gag… Further Reading: • ‘The Great Moon Hoax Was Simply a Sign of Its Time' (Smithsonian, 2015): https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smithsonian-institution/great-moon-hoax-was-simply-sign-its-time-180955761/ • 'Belief, Legend, and the Great Moon Hoax | Folklife Today' (Library of Congress, 2014): https://blogs.loc.gov/folklife/2014/08/the-great-moon-hoax/ • 'The Great Moon Hoax' (The Folklorist, 2013): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azlz163nN-A This episode first aired in 2024 Love the show? Have you ever wondered why your faith sometimes feels more like a checklist than a living relationship?Pastor Jeff and Tiffany kick off our Practical Theology series with an introduction to Zoëlogy; The study of the Christian life. We learn why beliefs must shape our behavior, how assurance of salvation lays the foundation for growth, and why active involvement in the church is essential to the Christian walk. What We Discussed: 00:00 - Intro Practical Theology, also called Applied Theology, is the study of how Christian doctrine shapes everyday life. Practical theology asks: How should what I believe change how I live?03:12 - What is “Zoëology”?The word Zoëlogy comes from two Greek words: zoe (life) and logos (word, study, discourse). Put together, it means the doctrine of the Christian life. 06:45 - Belief and BehaviorThe key principle of zoëlogy is that belief determines behavior. A person who has been born again should display that new life in the way they live, empowered by the Holy Spirit.09:16 - The Assurance of SalvationUnderstanding that salvation is a gift through Christ's finished work, not through human effort, is foundational. This confidence in being divinely forgiven lays the groundwork for spiritual growth and daily victory in the Christian life.12:22 - The Role of the ChurchEcclesiology, the doctrine of the church, teaches that Christians are called into fellowship and service within the body of Christ. Believers are “fellow workers” with Christ (1 Corinthians 3:9) in building His church. Active participation, worship, service, and fellowship with other Christians are essential parts of living out practical theology.Key Quote“Practical theology is simply asking: how does what I know of God change how I live for Him?” – Pastor Jeff CranstonWe love your feedback! In honor of National Dog Day, we’re sharing a heartfelt story about the special bond we share with our pets—and the comfort they bring in life’s hardest moments. Steve Wohlberg, a husband, father, author, and speaker, grew up in Hollywood with a deep love for animals. From Great Danes to turtles to a dog named Jax, animals have always been part of his story. After a painful loss, Steve began to explore what that bond really means—and how it can point to something bigger than ourselves. Later in the episode, we’ll hear from Dr. Sy Garte, a retired research biochemist who spent much of his life convinced that science held all the answers. Raised in an atheist household, Sy’s early perspective left little space for questions of faith or meaning beyond the material world. But as his life unfolded, experiences both personal and professional began to challenge that view and a growing curiosity led him to reconsider what he believed about life, purpose, and truth. Dr. Sy Garte National Institutes of Health Scientism American Scientific Affiliation Interview Quotes: “I think the reason why people grieve so greatly over the loss of a pet is because God our Creator is the author of the bond between people and animals. I really believe that God ministers to people through animals.” - Steve Wohlberg “When people are hurting, when they need a touch of love, animals can be a big part of God revealing to us that He cares about us.” - Steve Wohlberg “The last thing [my dog Pooka] did was look full view into the eyes of her master. I thought, That’s the way we need to be with Jesus. When we get into tough times or if we’re about to die, we fix our faith on Him because He loves us and He wants us to have such a relationship with Him.” - Steve Wohlberg “God can use tragedy, and He can bring good things out of it. It really makes me look forward to heaven and to the new earth where we’ll be with not only Jesus but with friendly animals.” - Steve Wohlberg “There are millions of things that we know to be true that we know not through science. Science can only address a certain number of things because the scientific method is not able to ask and answer questions on things like, Why do I love this or that person? Why am I the way I am?” - Dr. Sy Garte “If you think that God doesn’t love you, you’re wrong, because I know He loves you, because He loves even me. And if He could love me, how could He not love you?” - Dr. Sy Garte “Belief in Jesus Christ, belief in biblical reality, and everything in science are not in conflict, but in fact, completely compatible. I think that if you ask the right questions about all of this—where did this purpose come from, where did this cognition come from, why is life this way—there’s no scientific answer that relates to physics or chemistry, just as there’s no scientific answers to how life began that relates the physics and chemistry.” - Dr. Sy Garte “We have to be quiet if we want to hear the voice of God. You don’t know what form it’s going to take. It could be somebody smiling at you. It could be anything. But pay attention and you will hear it.” - Dr. Sy Garte ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel!
