Second-quarter GDP grew at a slower-than-expected annual rate of 1.5%, but much of the weakness came from temporary factors like lower inventories and reduced government spending rather than a broad slowdown in the private economy. Consumer spending remained strong, inflation continued to ease on a monthly basis, and private-sector demand was robust. While the Federal Reserve is still waiting for inflation to move closer to its 2% target before cutting rates, the underlying economic picture remains healthier than the headline GDP number suggests. Key Takeaways GDP grew 1.5% in the second quarter, below expectations. Consumer spending accelerated to 2.1%, showing continued economic resilience. Final sales to private domestic purchasers rose a strong 3.9%, highlighting solid underlying demand. Core PCE inflation eased to 0.1% for the month but remains 3.3% year-over-year, above the Fed's target. The Fed is likely to remain patient on interest rates until inflation shows more sustained improvement. Lars Heerink richtte in 2024 BlockCentral op, een Nederlands fonds dat belegt in altcoins, oftewel alle cryptomunten die geen bitcoin zijn. Wie wil instappen legt minimaal een ton in. Vorige maand werd het fonds uitgeroepen tot beste cryptofonds van Nederland, een titel waarover Heerink zelf mocht meestemmen. Dat deed hij ook. Op de eigen website staat het onomwonden: outperform, proven. BlockCentral heeft bitcoin verslagen sinds de start in augustus 2024, precies de periode waarin bitcoin bijna elke andere belegging achter zich liet. Voor een altcoinfonds was dat op papier de slechtst denkbare timing om te beginnen. Het onderscheidend vermogen zit volgens Heerink niet in de muntkeuze maar in de timing. Yield binnenhalen tijdens een bearmarkt, acht tot tien procent, instappen rond bodemvorming en het risico opvoeren richting een altseason. Daarmee is bitcoin een wankele maatstaf, en lijkt BlockCentral eerder een timingfonds dat toevallig in altcoins zit dan een altcoinfonds. Een strategie die zo helder te beschrijven is, valt in principe ook te kopiëren, met een team van twee man dat erachter zit. Ondertussen hapert de klassieke doorstroom van bitcoinwinst naar kleinere munten. Nieuw geld komt binnen via ETF's, en die kopen geen governance tokens. Tokenomist onderzocht 236 momenten waarop nieuwe tokens vrijkwamen en zag dat bijna driekwart daarvan een maand later lager stond tegenover bitcoin. Van de tienduizenden tokens die inmiddels bestaan blijft dan een smalle groep over die het woord belegging verdient. Wat er wel in de portefeuille zat: getokeniseerde Pokémonkaarten, een van de klappers van de afgelopen twee jaar. En het geld dat nu naar tokenisering van aandelen en andere echte activa stroomt, komt vooral terecht bij bitcoin, ethereum en een handvol grote namen. De constructie eromheen is lichter dan de term AFM-geregistreerd cryptofonds suggereert. Registratie onder het AIFMD lightregime is geen vergunning en levert geen doorlopend toezicht op, waardoor een belegger een aantal beschermingen mist die bij een fonds met volledige vergunning wel gelden. Pas boven honderd miljoen euro beheerd vermogen wordt een AIFM-vergunning verplicht, en zolang die grens niet in zicht is ziet Heerink er geen reden voor. Dat laat de sleutels van de munten over aan het fonds zelf, met alle vragen over hacks en faillissement die daarbij horen. Het Witte Huis presenteerde afgelopen week een aangescherpte versie van de Clarity Act, de Amerikaanse wet die moet vastleggen wie in de Verenigde Staten de baas is over crypto: toezichthouder SEC voor effecten, of de CFTC voor grondstoffen en derivaten. Nieuw is een ethiekhoofdstuk van zes artikelen dat de president, de vicepresident, Congresleden, federale rechters en hun echtgenoten verbiedt om tijdens hun ambtstermijn tegen betaling tokens uit te geven of te sponsoren. Bestaande cryptobelangen moeten binnen een jaar worden verkocht of naar een blind trust verhuizen, en beurzen mogen tokens die onder dat verbod vallen niet listen. Toch zit er ruimte in de tekst. Het verbod gaat over uitgeven en sponsoren, niet over bezitten, en een clausule staat uitgevers toe de gelijkenis van een politicus te blijven gebruiken als de token al vóór het aantreden bestond. De TRUMP-coin verscheen drie dagen voor de beëdiging. Kinderen van politici vallen er evenmin onder, terwijl Donald Trump Jr. en Eric Trump betrokken zijn bij World Liberty Financial. Bovendien vervalt het hele pakket op 20 januari 2029, en daarna kunnen ook oudere overtredingen niet meer worden vervolgd. Dat verklaart waarom zeven Democratische senatoren het concept alsnog te mager vinden op ethiek, illegale geldstromen en belangenverstrengeling. Onder hen Angela Alsobrooks en Ruben Gallego, precies de twee die in mei in de commissie vóór stemden. BIP-360 introduceerde in februari een adrestype dat het kwetsbare onderdeel weghaalt, en BIP-361 gaat verder: kwetsbare munten migreren en na vijf jaar bevriezen, waaronder naar schatting 1,7 miljoen bitcoin in oeroude adressen waarvan zo'n miljoen vermoedelijk van Satoshi Nakamoto is. Galaxy stelt tot vijf miljoen dollar beschikbaar voor quantumbestendige handtekeningen, migratietools en audits. Hassan brings his background in Silicon Valley technology, New York and Washington finance, and sovereign funds—including senior leadership roles at the World Bank—to explain why 162 of the world's 200 states are actually small states with populations under 12 million, and why these distributed, autonomous entities might be best positioned to survive the coming global shocks from AI, currency disruption, and the wobbling international order. Adnan Hassan presents a thesis grounded in billions of years of evolutionary data, arguing that systems which survive major shocks share common characteristics: they are autonomous, networked, cooperative, resilient, and lack single points of failure. He uses the asteroid strike that killed the dinosaurs as his central metaphor, noting that while massive dinosaurs went extinct, smaller organisms like mycelium, ants, bees, and marsupials survived because of their distributed and adaptable nature. Hassan believes we are currently experiencing a similar asteroid-level shock to our global systems through the simultaneous disruption of the rule-based global order, currency systems, and artificial intelligence, all happening at once over the next three to five years.2. Hassan identifies 162 out of 200 global states and economies as small states, defined as having populations under 12 million people. This number surprises most people, including sophisticated observers who typically guess around 60 or 70. Even more striking, 17 of the 20 richest countries by per capita GDP are small states, representing 85 percent of the wealthiest nations. These small states have disproportionate resources to deploy internationally and the greatest interest in maintaining a rule-based global order since they have the most to lose from chaos and cannot rely on size or military power for protection.3. The current global institutional framework established after World War Two, including the UN, IMF, World Bank, and WTO, is fundamentally wobbling and reaching the end of an era. Hassan argues that states are inherently selfish creatures addicted to regulatory sovereignty and control, but the systems designed to give these states structure and credibility are now failing. This represents the first major restructuring of the global order since the post-World War Two period, which itself followed 400 years of colonial systems. The transition period will be characterized by significant chaos and convulsions throughout the global system.4. Hassan advocates for creating a new small states asset class in financial markets, which does not currently exist despite small states representing the majority of countries and the wealthiest per capita economies. This asset class would provide large institutional investors like pension funds and sovereign wealth funds with globally diversified, potentially uncorrelated assets while simultaneously supporting political and economic structures that embody the evolutionary principles of survival through distributed, autonomous, networked cooperation. The small states asset class represents both sound evolutionary strategy and pragmatic investment opportunity.5. Technology without philosophy is efficiency without purpose, a concern Hassan raised as early as 1994 when he helped prototype the first electronic trading market on the internet. He witnessed the naive optimism of Silicon Valley technologists who believed simply throwing tools over the wall would create a better world, but this approach made both good and bad activities more efficient. Social media demonstrated this danger by efficiently creating disruption and loss of trust in political systems. Hassan warns that the same mistake is being made with AI, where powerful tools are being deployed without adequate philosophical framework or consideration of consequences.6. Small states and their leading families will find more common language and shared understanding with each other across geographic boundaries than with larger neighboring states. A family business in Montevideo has an easier conversation with counterparts in Singapore or New Zealand than with businesses in Sao Paulo because small state actors recognize each other's unique realities and circumstances. Hassan plans to create a Davos for small states in 2027 to facilitate this knowledge sharing among the mycelium colony, allowing different nodes to exchange innovations and strategies across the distributed global network of small state actors.7. The optimistic future involves unleashing individual creativity globally by giving people access to AI-enabled tools that provide world-class legal, financial, and consulting advice in their language of choice. The solopreneur can now become a conglomerate, with individuals no longer constrained by lack of access to execution machinery. Hassan envisions young people in places like Gabon, Swaziland, or Uruguay having the same access to sophisticated business infrastructure as those in traditional power centers, with the distinguishing factor being creativity of mind rather than geographic or institutional privilege. Small states can pivot faster on regulatory frameworks, sometimes achieving in a dinner meeting what takes large states three years of legislative, executive, and judicial wrangling.
