Schuldeisers van het failliete Rotterdamse cryptobedrijf Knaken hebben ruim 14 miljoen euro aan claims ingediend, namens duizenden gedupeerde klanten. In totaal is er nog altijd 4 miljoen euro spoorloos, blijkt uit een analyse van het Financieele Dagblad. Het verhaal begint bij de AFM. De toezichthouder wilde Knaken geen vergunning geven onder MiCAR, de Europese cryptowet, en deed niet lang daarna aangifte. In juli vroeg het Openbaar Ministerie het faillissement aan, en de rechter ging daar later die maand in mee. De problemen begonnen al veel eerder. In 2020 werd Knaken gehackt en werden er twintig bitcoin gestolen, destijds goed voor zo'n 150.000 euro. Later raakte het bedrijf er nog drie kwijt. Om het gat te dichten kozen eigenaar Ronald J. en een medeoprichter ervoor om bitcoin te hedgen, onder meer met hefboomconstructies. Een hedge beschermt je tegen koersbewegingen, maar wie dat met geleend geld doet, wordt juist kwetsbaar als de koers de verkeerde kant op gaat. Klanten en investeerders hoorden jarenlang niets van de problemen. J. is verdachte in de zaak en sprak onlangs toch met het FD. Wat betekent de ondergang van Knaken voor de Nederlandse cryptosector? Dan de markt. Bitcoin sloot de week af op zo'n 85.000 dollar. Dat weekslot, de koers in de nacht van zondag op maandag, lag boven de top van begin mei rond 83.000 dollar. Een week eerder sloot de koers al boven het gemiddelde van de afgelopen vijftig weken. Voor veel analisten is dat reden om te spreken van een vroege bullmarkt, een periode van stijgende koersen, na elf maanden van dalende koersen. Tegelijk begint het in de wereldeconomie te kraken. Wereldwijd staan staatsobligaties in de uitverkoop, waardoor de rente hard oploopt. Dat maakt de kans groot dat centrale banken als de Fed en de ECB de rente verder verhogen. Het sentiment in de cryptosector is goed, maar in hoeverre kunnen zulke ontwikkelingen het feestje verpesten? Tot slot AI. Volgens analisten van vermogensbeheerder BlackRock gaat crypto een belangrijke rol spelen voor AI agents, software die zelfstandig taken uitvoert en daarbij ook zelf betaalt. In een nieuw rapport schetst BlackRock een economie waarin zulke agents voor kleine betalingen terugvallen op stablecoins, cryptomunten met een vaste waarde die meestal aan de dollar gekoppeld zijn. Wie zijn spaargeld op de spaarrekening laat staan, ziet het door inflatie langzaam minder waard worden. Dat is de kern van Zwemmen in het Geld, het boek van Milou Brand. Beleggen is volgens haar minder eng dan veel mensen denken en geen luxe extraatje, maar noodzakelijk onderhoud. Ze noemt het een cursus financiële zelfverdediging: wie weet hoe het werkt, laat zich minder snel iets aanpraten. Haar advies voor de meeste mensen is simpel. Probeer de markt niet te verslaan, maar leg maandelijks een bedrag in in een breed gespreide ETF, een beleggingsfonds dat de wereldeconomie volgt. Die filosofie gaat terug op John Bogle, de oprichter van Vanguard. In 2021 zei ze in haar eigen podcast Jong Beleggen, na een gesprek met Bart Mol, dat ze bitcoin misschien wel ging kopen. Dat is er nooit van gekomen. Ze ziet niet waar het rendement van bitcoin vandaan komt en houdt het liever bij bedrijven die echte waarde creëren. Een hype vindt ze bitcoin niet meer, maar een volwaardige bouwsteen in haar portefeuille ook nog niet. Goud en crypto komen in haar boek dan ook niet voor. Co-host Bert Slagter legt uit dat hard assets als goud en bitcoin wel degelijk in een gespreide portefeuille passen, ook via een goedkope ETF. Er zijn periodes geweest van tien tot vijftien jaar waarin de beurs zijwaarts bewoog. Een cryptomandje als de Coin50 ziet hij niet zitten: dat bestaat voor de helft uit bitcoin, en voor de rest kun je beter zelf iets kiezen. Dan de vraag waarom zo weinig mensen beleggen. In het boek staat de Vrouw met de Rode Sjaal centraal, die Milou tijdens een avond in een zaal vol publiek vroeg hoe ze het in haar hoofd haalde om mensen tot beleggen aan te sporen. Voor haar generatie was dat ook nooit nodig. Nederland heeft bovendien een goed pensioenstelsel, en in heel Europa wordt meer gespaard en minder belegd dan in de Verenigde Staten. Beleggen heeft ook een imagoprobleem: een boekhandel zegde een interview met Milou af omdat het onderwerp niet bij de winkel paste. Tot slot: de aandelenmarkt stijgt al bijna twintig jaar. Wat als er een verloren decennium aankomt? Milou raadt aan de inleg te spreiden en gedisciplineerd door te gaan. Voor wie ouder is en een kortere horizon heeft, wordt het ingewikkelder. We begin with the Fed raising interest rates today by a quarter of a percent with an expectation there will be another increase to 4.1% later this year. Joining us to discuss how this is a response to inflation at 3.7% in July, in part caused by Trump's war on Iran, is Robert Hockett, the Edward Cornell Professor of Law and Finance and a Professor of Public Policy at Cornell University.
