Tonight's guest, Sammy Richardson, has been spending time in the woods for about as long as he can remember. He describes himself as being a true woodsman. On the night of May 14th, 2024, Sammy decided he'd try his hand at night fishing for catfish just 500 yards from his home, in Lewis County, West Virginia. He had been fishing at that spot before, without incident, many times. That night would be different, however. That night, something happened that will forever change the way he looks at the woods. Nightfall With a DogmanAfter fifteen years as a patrol officer and SWAT operator, a veteran responds to a frantic 911 call on a stormy October night: an elderly rancher reports a monstrous black creature—tall, fast, with eyes like fire—mauling his livestock. Arriving at the isolated property, the officer finds the chicken coop and lamb pen in savage ruin: birds shredded beyond recognition, six lambs mangled with impossible force, their bodies twisted and torn. Massive bipedal tracks, nearly seventeen inches long with clawed toes, confirm something unnatural walked upright through the mud. Drawn into the black pines by the old man's terrified warning that “it watches,” the officer confronts the entity: a hulking shadow with glowing red eyes seven feet high, radiating pure hate. A deep growl vibrates through his chest, followed by an inhuman shriek that silences the storm; the creature vanishes as quickly as it appeared. Backup searches yield nothing more, and the incident is logged as a routine “suspicious circumstance / possible livestock mauling.” The old man flees, abandoning the cursed ranch to rot. Tonight's guest, Monty, has had two cryptid encounters. He's only going to share the first one on tonight's show, because that was his only Sasquatch encounter. The second encounter was with a Dogman. When Monty had his Sasquatch encounter, he was only 16 years old. He had his little brother Robbie and a good friend, John, with him when it happened. What started out as a fun camping trip, up on the mountain behind Monty and Robbie's home turned out to be the most frightening experience either of them had had, until that point. That night, one thing led to another and the next thing the boys knew, they were all  running for their lives down the mountain, trying to make it to the relative safety of their home. What happened? Sasquatch Terror for HikersIn 2016, while driving from Los Angeles to Portland with his girlfriend and detouring for off-roading in his new Jeep, the narrator and his partner heard repeated blood-curdling screams echoing through remote mountain roads, sounding like a woman in distress. They dismissed it at the time, but later at a tourist spot they discovered a guest book filled with locals' Bigfoot sightings, planting the first seed of curiosity in his mind. Four years later, now a committed Bigfoot believer with a new Jeep Rubicon, a massive Mastiff, and a new girlfriend, he set out on what seemed like a routine hike in the mountains near central LA County. As they descended into a bowl-shaped valley, they encountered a series of increasingly large piles of freshly uprooted shrubs and bushes deliberately blocking the narrow trail—plants too tough for any human to pull bare-handed—followed by twisted and braided tree branches high overhead. The climax came at a massive 9-foot-wide, 6-foot-tall wall of freshly torn trees and debris that completely sealed the path; after pushing through, they felt intensely watched, heard sprinting footsteps, and glimpsed a large figure scrambling up a steep cliff and hiding behind bushes, rocks tumbling in its wake. Years afterward, while camping with a friend in a Sequoia grove in Yosemite's Sierra National Forest, the narrator heard slow, deliberate knocking sounds coming from the tree line across a clearing—sounds that ceased whenever anyone approached within 25 feet and resumed once they retreated, as if something were playfully interacting with them. Bigfoot Pie ThiefA 12-year-old boy finishing lunch at his grandparents' farm watched in shock as a furry hand reached through the open kitchen window and snatched one of Grandma's freshly baked apple pies from the sill. Grandma charged in swinging her hickory switch like a sword, cracking the knuckles of the thief and sending both hand and pie flying out the window. Racing to look outside, the boy saw a six-foot-tall, hairy creature sprinting toward the woods with the pie in its grip, grunting and laughing the whole way. Grandpa arrived just in time to see it vanish into the trees, then calmly sat the boy down on the porch and explained that the creature was a “Booger”—one of a small family living several miles over the ridge. The young male thief had been bold enough to test Grandma's cooking before, but the clan generally kept its distance and meant no real harm. Over the years the now-57-year-old narrator had many more encounters with the Boogers, some face-to-face, yet he always remembered Grandpa's advice: lower any weapon, raise empty hands, smile, and back away slowly. Treating them with the same respect given to any wild predator—giving them room and never crowding them—kept every meeting peaceful. The creatures sometimes passed through at night or watched from the woods, but they could also be surprisingly considerate; the morning after the pie theft, six fresh apples appeared on Grandma's windowsill as repayment. Shiloh later described the creature as being nearly nine feet tall and strangely mesmerizing, as if it were somehow pulling her attention toward it. Her cousin sensed something was wrong and snapped her out of the strange trance-like state before they ran back to the village. Later that day several relatives armed themselves and followed the enormous tracks left behind.Not far from where the girls had been picking berries, they spotted the same towering figure swaying in the brush. When the men approached, the creature suddenly charged. Warning shots rang out, and the massive figure stumbled before dropping onto all fours and disappearing into the tundra. Brian welcomes Tim from Macon County, North Carolina, whose interest in Bigfoot began in an unexpected way. Years ago, he and a friend decided to prank the friend's sons by creating fake tracks in the woods, a harmless hoax meant to stir up a little excitement. But not long after, the joke seemed to take on a life of its own.Beginning in 2008, Tim says unexplained activity started occurring on the property—events that made him question whether something real might be moving through those woods. What followed were a series of strange and unsettling incidents. Tim recalls a raccoon being violently killed while a deep roar and whistling sounds echoed through the area. He also describes rocks and sticks being thrown, piercing screams from the darkness, and repeated disturbances around the trails, deer stands, and feeders scattered throughout the property. Over time, these experiences escalated from mysterious noises to what Tim believes were direct encounters. One involved a creature he photographed alongside researcher Dwight Campbell. Another encounter occurred while Tim was bow hunting, when he says a large figure appeared within roughly twenty feet of him. In a separate experience in Cades Cove, he observed something during the daytime using thermal equipment. More recently, in 2022, Tim describes seeing a creature on the ground that crawled away from the area rather than standing upright. Tim also recounts a trip following the South Carolina Bigfoot Festival, when his group returned to a location where bluff-charge vocalizations had previously been reported. The area had already generated stories from other witnesses, including reports of glowing eyes and even claims of a dogman-like creature moving through the woods.Despite skepticism from some people in his life, Tim remains focused on documenting what he believes is genuine activity. One of the moments that left the strongest impression on him involved hearing what sounded like two creatures communicating back and forth, an experience that reinforced his belief that these beings possess intelligence and complex behavior.Today, Tim continues researching and sharing his experiences while encouraging others to approach the subject with curiosity and an open mind. In the fall of 1978, a thirty-one-year-old fur trapper named John flew his Piper Super Cub into a remote stretch of the Yukon Territory about a hundred and forty miles northeast of Dawson City to begin what he planned as a four-month trapping season. He had a solid cabin he'd built himself, a well-established trap line running forty-some miles through prime marten, lynx, beaver, and wolverine country, and enough experience in the northern bush to know that country about as well as any man alive.What he didn't have was any way of knowing that something else was already out there, and that it had already been watching him. Within days of his arrival John began finding enormous bipedal tracks pressed into the creek gravel and early snow, measuring over twenty inches long and more than eight inches wide at the heel, with a stride that a tall man at a full trot couldn't match. The tracks were only the beginning. Something started systematically clearing his traps, not randomly, but with a working knowledge of his entire line, springing sets from above with deliberate downward pressure and removing the catch without a trace. Then came the vocalizations, deep and structured sounds in the dark timber that had a quality John had no name for at the time, sounds that decades later would stop him cold when he heard the Sierra Sounds recordings made by Ron Morehead and Al Berry in the Sierra Nevada. That same organized, back-and-forth exchange.That same sense of language underneath something no human throat is built to produce.Then the rocks started. And then one of them put John face-down in the snow with a three-inch gash in the side of his head that he had to stitch himself, alone, a hundred and forty miles from the nearest town.John stayed because his family needed what that trap line could produce. He stayed through the night visits, through the sound of something breathing against his door in the dark, through the feeling of large hands running slowly along his log walls. He stayed until the night something hit his cabin with enough force to crack the chinking and move a ten-inch spruce log in its notch.He went outside with his Marlin 45/70 rifle and he shot it, and he followed the blood trail the next morning until the ground went too hard to hold sign. And when he came back from that blood trail he found both tundra tires on his Super Cub torn apart by hand.That's when he called his friend Byron. What happened the night Byron arrived is the kind of account that's hard to sit with, a coordinated assault on that cabin from multiple directions that lasted for hours, with John and Byron shooting through the walls and ceiling while something worked at the logs from outside trying to find a way in. They made it to morning. They packed their gear. They flew out and John never went back.He sold the cabin, went to work on a crab boat in the Bering Sea, and spent eleven years deciding that thirty-foot seas and a crab pot winch were considerably safer than whatever was in that Yukon timber. He's probably right.John listens to this show and to my other podcast Sasquatch Odyssey, and he says that hearing Fred from Alaska talk about the temperament of these animals in the northern bush is the closest he's come to feeling like someone else understands what he encountered. He wants people to know that what's out there in the deep country doesn't match the friendly-giant narrative, and he wants them to be careful. Drew Nowlan reached out to us with a story he's never told publicly before. A lifelong outdoorsman and hunter from Ohio with a background in criminology, Drew has had close to two decades of encounters with Dog Man, a bipedal canine creature that most people have never heard of and fewer believe exists. It started with a late-night encounter at his parents' property near Norton, Ohio, where something massive jumped a four-foot fence without touching it, chased the family rooster in circles on two legs, pinned it with a hand the size of a football, and then let it go. The late researcher Linda Godfrey told Drew the chicken was bait to lure him outside. That night launched years of escalating activity at the property, including wall-shaking bangs on the house at all hours, footsteps on the roof, pack vocalizations from multiple creatures at once, and sightings by Drew's mother, stepfather, sister, niece, and neighbors. Drew's five-year-old niece, who had never heard the word werewolf, told her grandmother she wouldn't sleep upstairs anymore because "the big dog" watches her.Drew walks through encounter after encounter with the precision of someone who has spent sixteen years processing what he's seen. Brown ones, gray ones, a black one that materialized out of a bush in suburban Akron, twenty feet from him and a friend. One that followed his exact footsteps up to the back door and then walked back down the driveway. One that rode on the roof of his car for fifteen minutes after he left his parents' house. Juvenile prints on his mother's car that suggest they breed and raise young. And just a week before recording, fresh bipedal canine tracks in the snow at his new property, an hour and a half from his parents' place. Drew believes these creatures are physical, not purely demonic, noting they leave prints, eat animals, respond to firearms as deterrents, and blur with speed when they run. But he also believes there's a spiritual dimension to them, a paralyzing dread that accompanies every encounter and a fixation on fear that suggests something deeper than predatory instinct. He explains the vital role oral tradition plays in passing down history, survival skills, and encounters with what many in his community know as the Hairy Man. Written documentation is rare. He points out that “Story Knife” remains one of the few works that even attempts to capture fragments of that tradition in print. For generations, stories were not recorded in books—they were carried in memory, tied to landmarks, seasons, and lived experience. Fred also reflects on navigation, describing how descriptive mapping and deep familiarity with terrain once guided people across vast, unforgiving landscapes long before GPS existed. In his view, those skills are not outdated relics—they still matter. The conversation then shifts to a chilling account Fred heard in 2004 from a man named Jerry in Togiak. Jerry described a winter hunting trip west of Non Dalton that took a terrifying turn. During the hunt, a scream erupted across the tundra so intense that it scattered nearby wolves. What followed was even more disturbing. A Hairy Man reportedly struck a caribou with a single backhand blow to the ribs, dropping it. Jerry and his companions salvaged and packed the meat, trying to focus on the task at hand, but the encounter was far from over. The creature returned, and in an overwhelming display of strength and dominance, it threw their packed quarters over a ridge.The men abandoned the situation and escaped on their snow machines, shaken by what they had witnessed. Jerry also recalled an earlier sighting along the West Channel of the Nok River, where he saw a tall, young, slender Hairy Man that fled the area and swam away, avoiding contact. Fred then shares experiences from a property owner near Juneau, referred to as “Sam,” whose encounters unfolded over time rather than in a single dramatic moment. Sam described strange whistling that mimicked human tones, the sound and sight of bipedal movement in the trees, prolonged wood-banging that echoed through the forest, rocks landing near hunters, and even owl hoots that felt deliberately imitative rather than natural. Alongside these physical signs was a persistent, oppressive feeling in the woods—an atmosphere that made it clear something was present. Tonight we're stepping away from the deep woods and into something different. Something that's been keeping me up at night for the better part of two years as I've tracked down these accounts. Panning for Gold in Bigfoot CountryA lifelong outdoorsman from a Texas cattle-ranch background (former pro rodeo rider, music teacher, avid camper, fisherman, hiker, and fossil/rock collector) recounts two eerie, unexplained experiences that ultimately convinced him Bigfoot is real. While renting a remote 26-acre cabin outside Kerrville, Texas, he regularly fed local wildlife. For several nights he heard loud slapping/banging on the cabin walls; one night the impact was so violent it shook pictures on the wall beside his bed. His dogs were terrified. A trail camera later captured a large, shadowy face peering through the brush exactly where the noises occurred. Around the same time, a reported Bigfoot sighting happened just eight miles away. After moving to Santa Fe, New Mexico, he had a similar feeling of being watched while alone with his dogs on the remote Holy Ghost Trail (an area locals call haunted); the dogs bolted back to the Jeep in fear. In March 2021, during a solo gold-panning trip to Willow Creek in the Santa Fe National Forest, he discovered a set of enormous fresh footprints paralleling the creek—16 inches long, 5 inches wide, with a 4.5-foot stride. His dogs froze, staring into the brush; he felt intensely watched. He measured and photographed the prints (with his foot for scale) before racing back to his truck. Subsequent research revealed dozens of Bigfoot reports in both the Texas Hill Country and northern New Mexico locations where he had lived and hiked, including one near his old cabin on the exact night of the slapping incident. A hunter had also gone missing in the Willow Creek area, later featured on a TV show. Now living on the Texas coast (where sightings are also reported), he remains an enthusiastic outdoorsman but never hikes or camps without a firearm and keeps a close eye on his dogs. The Worst Bigfoot EncounterA lifelong hunter with over 45 years of experience—successful with everything from coyotes and deer to bear and turkey—announces he is selling all his firearms, gear, and donating his camo after a nightmarish solo turkey hunt in late April near Cave Run Lake, Kentucky. Traumatized beyond words, he has been unable to confide in family, friends, or doctors for fear of being institutionalized, and now reaches out anonymously with his story. While set up motionless against a massive black oak on a ridge, calling in a hot gobbler, he is suddenly seized from behind by a huge, dark-brown, hairy Bigfoot-like creature. Its thick, callused gray-skinned, gorilla-like hands clamp over his mouth/neck and around his waist, pinning him helplessly to the tree and neutralizing his shotgun. He watches in frozen terror as two sleek black, dog-headed “werewolf” or Dogman creatures—complete with erect ears and three-inch fangs—ambush and devour a doe in the clearing just yards away, ripping through meat and bone in minutes with clicking sounds and howls. When the pair turns toward his hiding spot, the creature holding him unleashes a deafening roar that summons a group of 4–5 more Bigfoot-type beings. They explode from the woods in pursuit, chasing the predators away. The Bigfoot then snatches his gun, hurls it into the brush, blocks his attempt to retrieve it, and finally releases him. The hunter sprints ten frantic minutes back to his truck (a trek that normally takes 45), abandons the shotgun on the ridge forever, and speeds away in panic. In the weeks since, he suffers crushing PTSD: insomnia, uncontrollable crying jags at work, paralyzing fear of any woods or even his own yard. He now drives extra miles on highways to avoid wooded county roads, refuses to sit on the porch with his wife, hires a neighbor kid to mow the lawn, and has called off or been sent home from work multiple times. He believes the Bigfoot creatures deliberately protected him from being eaten, but the experience has destroyed his lifelong love of the outdoors. He asks: What should he do? Is there help or therapy for people who have had these kinds of encounters?
