Copyright ©2026, Weird Darkness.Originally aired: March 22, 2025Weird Darkness devotes a full episode to the Dogman, the upright, wolf-headed cryptid reported across Michigan and Wisconsin for more than a century, moving through firsthand encounters, a claimed government cover-up, a witnessed fight between a Dogman and two Sasquatch, and a side-by-side comparison of Dogman folklore against traditional werewolf mythology.It opens with the creature's documented history, tracing the first alleged sighting to 1887, when a group of lumberjacks in Wexford County, Michigan described a being with the body of a man and the head of a dog during the state's great logging era. Similar reports followed in Allegan County in the 1950s and in Cross Village, Big Rapids, and Manistee County during the 1960s, while Elkhorn, Wisconsin became the center of activity in the early 1990s. The segment also catalogs standalone incidents tied to the legend: four horses found dead with their eyes open in 1917, seven-foot-four claw marks reported on a church door in 1957, a farmer found dead at his plow surrounded by oversized canine tracks in 1997, a 2006 backyard sighting in Shelby Township, Michigan, and an army veteran's account of a wolf-headed creature pacing his truck through Manistee National Forest. Odawa oral tradition describing a two-legged, wolf-like being near Lake Michigan predates all of it, and the episode raises the theory that Dogman sightings cluster in years ending in seven.From there, the episode turns to the case that gave the cryptid one of its best-known names: the Beast of Bray Road. Lori Endrizzi's fall 1989 sighting on Bray Road outside Elkhorn, Wisconsin, first documented by researcher Linda Godfrey in the 2003 book "The Beast of Bray Road," describes a kneeling, brownish-gray figure with long claws that turned to meet her headlights. Two years later, on Halloween night 1991, Doris Gipson struck the same stretch of road and was chased by a clawed, upright creature that clung to her car's rear bumper as she fled. Walworth County Animal Control officer Jon Fredrikson began compiling reports in a manila folder marked "Werewolf," which grew to include a December 1990 sighting by a child witness, clawed tracks near Potter's Road that led locals to nickname the creature "Pottsy," a 1990 roadside sighting by Mike Etten, and two separate encounters reported by high school student Tom Brichta. The same story traces the legend back further still, to 1936, when night watchman Mark Shackleman encountered a six-foot, black-furred creature scratching at an Indigenous burial ground outside Racine, Wisconsin's St. Coletta Convent, a creature that reportedly spoke a single word, "Gadarah," a name tied to the biblical account of Jesus casting out demons at Gadara.Next, the episode moves to a February 2012 case from rural Chenango, New York, where Brandon Close and his neighbor Gene pursued the source of a scream that had left Close's cattle huddled against an electric fence, only to be chased through the woods by an eight-foot creature that kept pace with their all-terrain vehicle at highway speed. The account continues with an unmarked black van and armed personnel arriving at Close's property the following day, ultimately removing the memory cards from his trail cameras.A separate account follows a Big Rapids, Michigan night watchman's 1961 encounter with a six-foot, grayish-brown creature outside his home near the Haymarsh State Game Area, an incident the witness says he photographed under a streetlight.The episode then recounts an anonymous 1992 camping trip in which the witness watched a black, long-armed creature stalk him along a dry creek bed before a Sasquatch intervened, leading to a violent fight that ended when a second, larger Sasquatch killed the Dogman and dragged its body into the woods.Hunting-season encounters follow, beginning with Peter's October 16, 2012 experience in Pontiac, Illinois, where a wolf-sized creature bit his arm during a chase near his family's deer stand before inexplicably retreating. A separate witness describes two Dogman sightings twenty years apart, the first in Alto, Michigan in 1988 and the second in nearby Lowell, Michigan in 2008, when a blue-eyed creature that had followed him since childhood appeared on his roof and spoke a single word, "Don't."Another segment follows Derek, an Ohio mycology enthusiast, to a 2016 night-fishing trip along the Mahoning River in Niles, Trumbull County, Ohio, where he encountered a crouching creature near an old train trestle that stood to meet his gaze before retreating into the brush.A Fitchburg, Wisconsin case follows college student Matt, who in 2006 heard a scream during a minor earthquake and glimpsed a wolf-headed, humanoid figure in a passing car's headlights. A separate story follows a man identified as Mark to his late grandfather's cabin in Sierra County, Ohio, where he discovered why his grandfather had banned the family from the property for years, after an unseen creature chased him back to the cabin and reappeared at the tree line with two others.A Reed City, Michigan hunting party's four-day encounter in November 2007 follows, in which Sam and his companions repeatedly crossed paths with a yellow-eyed, hunchbacked creature that left claw marks on a rifle stock and a cabin door. The episode then follows Gabe to a rural Montana property, where lightning revealed a broad-shouldered, upright creature in his yard, followed weeks later by a closer encounter near his satellite dish that prompted him to move.Retired law enforcement officer Laura Love's account follows, describing a nearly seven-and-a-half-foot, dark-furred creature that struck a truck near the West Weber Road overpass on U.S. Highway 31 before vanishing into roadside brush. Fred from the Subarctic Alaska Sasquatch YouTube channel is back with three unsettling reports from remote Alaska. The first two occurred independently on the Fourth of July along the same long stretch of road on the Kenai Peninsula near Soldotna.Traveling from opposite directions, Leslie and Rusty each reported seeing a large figure step into the roadway. Rusty, who was towing a trailer, claimed he watched the figure strike a spruce grouse onto the pavement, retrieve the bird, glance toward the approaching traffic, and disappear into the timber.Fred then shares a far more aggressive encounter from the winter of 1987. John Sr. and John Jr. were traveling by snowmachine to a relative's isolated cabin near the Mulchatna caribou herd when they noticed a massive, humanlike figure covered in hair. The creature reportedly threw objects, watched the hunters through a cabin window, damaged the generator shed, and destroyed an exterior light. After darkness fell, something began pounding against the cabin walls.At first light, the two men abandoned the cabin and headed for home.The figure allegedly followed them near the trail, forcing the hunters to fire warning shots as they escaped across the snow. Mike returns for the conclusion of his 1982 Oregon campground encounter, picking up with two sets of reflective eyes watching him from the darkness near a picnic table. At first, he assumes he is dealing with deer, wolves, or some other familiar animal and repeatedly tries to scare them away.But as his flashlight begins to fade and he moves closer, the shapes refuse to behave like anything he recognizes.Standing only twelve to fourteen feet away, Mike watches one figure rise to an estimated height of more than eight feet. Moments later, he notices an even larger presence beside a tree, with its eyes appearing nearly eleven feet above the ground. He searches for antlers, ears, a muzzle, or any other feature that might explain what he is seeing, but nothing fits. Instead of running, Mike talks to the figures, throws rocks, sings “Kumbaya,” and eventually holds out an apple into the darkness. Something large and covered in hair gently takes it from his hand.The next morning, Mike measures the surrounding trees and branches to confirm the heights he witnessed. Even then, he does not immediately call the creatures Bigfoot. Mike's 1982 Oregon Bigfoot Encounter: Part 1In this episode, Brian welcomes Mike from New York for the first part of a terrifying encounter that has stayed with him for more than forty years. In November of 1971, a family in Old Bowie went searching for a missing puppy named Ginger and found her decapitated near the railroad tracks off Fletchertown Road.Within weeks, a small-town newspaper headline reading "Residents Fear Goatman Lives" had grown into Washington Post coverage of a six-foot hairy creature walking upright through the Prince George's County woods, and the Maryland Goatman was born. In this episode, I trace the legend all the way back to its documented beginnings, from a 1971 college folklore project and the mad-scientist rumors surrounding the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center to the goat herder, the hermit, and the axe-wielding thing said to stalk lovers' lanes and Crybaby Bridge.I walk through the classic encounters the way the county has told them for fifty years, hooves on the blacktop behind a parked car, an axe blade in a door panel, screams over the campsites, and then I put on my old badge and show you what the evidence actually supports. From there the road trip goes deeper into Maryland's monster file, because the witnesses in 1971 never described a goat at all.They described a Bigfoot. In this episode, Brian welcomes Steve from the UK to share the unsettling roadside encounter he experienced near Hibaldstow, North Lincolnshire, in July 1994.While driving home after a night of DJ work, Steve watched a heavily built, hair-covered creature—standing roughly six and a half feet tall—cross directly in front of his car before disappearing into the roadside brush.The creature moved with remarkable speed and an unusually smooth, fluid gait. Tonight we're pulling off the road and opening the mailbag. Over the past few months the inbox has been filling up with encounter stories, and when I sat down to sort through them, one thing stood out: over and over again, they were coming from hunters.That makes sense when you think about it. Hunters are in the woods before dawn and after dark, sitting still in country most people never see, and they know exactly what belongs in the timber and what doesn't.In this episode I've got six of those stories, from six different men, in six different states, across six different decades. We start in western Montana in nineteen sixty-eight, where two elk hunters packed seven miles into a basin that something had already emptied.From there it's the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas in nineteen seventy-seven, where a young deer hunter learned why the old-timers on his uncle's lease quietly hunted around forty acres of the best ground on the place. Then we go back to the oldest account in the bag, a logger on the west slope of the Washington Cascades in nineteen fifty-four, four years before America even had the word Bigfoot. After that it's Michigan's Upper Peninsula in nineteen eighty-nine, where a bear hunter's bait station started getting cleaned out by something that didn't leave bear tracks. Then down to a Georgia river bottom in nineteen ninety-six, where two cousins hunting hogs at night followed a hole in the frog sound and found out what had moved the hogs. And we close in the Colorado high country in two thousand eight, with a skeptic of an archery elk hunter, a wrong-sounding bugle in the dark, and a line of sixteen-inch tracks through an elk wallow.Six men, most of whom never planned on telling anybody. In this episode, Fred shares two unsettling accounts of suspected “hairy man” encounters from the remote Alaskan wilderness.The first involves Don and Tina, a couple hired to operate a gold mine along the Koyukuk River. During a stretch of heavy rain, large rocks began slamming into their loud mining equipment from somewhere beyond the tree line. Don briefly chased a dark figure into the woods, while Tina later witnessed an enormous humanoid silhouette moving nearby.The situation escalated the following morning when the figure appeared dangerously close to their camp. Tina fired a shotgun into the air, and the couple retreated to their cabin before seeking help from a neighboring miner. He revealed that he had experienced similar harassment in the area. Despite the mine producing good gold, Don and Tina decided the money was not worth the risk and quit. Fortunately, the owner treated them fairly and paid them for their work.Fred then rshares Daniel's experience while trout fishing along the Tickchik River roughly twenty-five years ago. While waiting near a thick stand of willows, Daniel became overwhelmed by the feeling that something was watching him. After firing warning shots, he spotted a tall, black humanoid silhouette standing near the brush. He called it a monster.Fred then shares a more recent report from Walter, Bernice, and their adult son Michael, who were traveling near the Taylor Highway close to Mosquito Fork when they encountered three enormous beings, each estimated around nine feet tall, with what appeared to be tails. As the family tried to document what they were seeing, their cameras and phones reportedly died without warning. Moments later, rocks began striking their toy hauler, and the situation escalated until Michael fired a shot so they could get away.The episode also includes another chilling encounter from the Matanuska River area, where a camping trip was interrupted by screams, a foul odor, strange guttural chatter, and the sight of a large upright figure moving near camp. One is an eight-year-old girl named June, who ran from the campground when the booms started because her ears don't have a volume knob.The other is something young and half-grown that has never heard fireworks in its life and believes the sky itself is breaking open.What happens between them over one long night, a washed-out ledge above a forty-foot drop, a counting trick a father taught his daughter about thunder, and a search party whose dogs refuse to go up the gorge, is the kind of story that starts as a missing child report and ends as something this county still doesn't have words for. It's told the way I got it, from tracks, from sign, from a deputy's report nobody made her write, and from a spiral notebook where a mother wrote down every strange, plain, devastating thing her daughter said at bedtime for months afterward.And yes, it comes back around to flags and freedom before it's done.
