Avan Jogia is a Canadian actor, author and director who spent his teen years in the spotlight as one of the stars of the hit Nickelodeon series “Victorious.” Now, Avan's new book of poetry, “Autopsy (of an Ex-Teen Heartthrob),” takes a critical look at the culture of celebrity and the sinister side of fame. Avan tells Tom Power about how starring on a Nickelodeon show felt like he was “performing adolescence and purity,” what he thinks about the documentary “Quiet on Set,” and why he's chosen poetry to reflect on his time as a teen star.

Door Mouse is the feature film directorial debut from Avan Jogia, the celebrated writer and actor from Vancouver who is well known for a lot of projects, including the wildly bonkers Netflix series Ghost Wars. Door Mouse is a neo-noir thriller about a burlesque dancer and struggling comic book artist (the titular Door Mouse) who is compelled to investigate the disappearances of two of her fellow burlesque dancers and finds a whole world of trouble in the process. Door Mouse is at once wildly entertaining, highly stylized, and a biting commentary on power structures, trauma, and how the disenfranchised can disappear and nobody bats an eye – nobody, that is, except brave people like Door Mouse. In this fascinating conversation with Sabrina Rani Furminger, filmmaker Avan Jogia and actress Nhi Do talk identity, the real-world inspirations for Door Mouse, and how to make a neo-noir thriller with a punk rock spirit. Episode sponsor: Biz Books and The Drama Class
Alan Cumming talks about his new gig as host of the U.S. version of “The Traitors” and returning to Los Angeles to host AARP's Movies for Grownups Awards. The video game series, RESIDENT EVIL, may be one of the if not the most popular horror video game franchise of all time. Having eight official games, plus a number of spinoffs, the series has been one of the video game maker Capcom's biggest sellers. Soon a movie franchise was born starring Milla Jovovich which at first followed the game story line but soon later completely left its source material. In Q4 of 2021, the new film RESIDENT EVIL: WELCOME TO RACCOON CITY promised to get back to the origin of the story (as a prequel). Claire Redfield (Kaya Scodelario) returns to Raccoon City to rekindle her relationship with her brother Chris (Robbie Amell) as well as to dig into their history as orphans. When residents begin to start acting strangely and the Umbrella Corporation, the biggest city's employer, locks down the city. Claire, among the local police force, are locked in and have to find out what is going on and how to get out. The film is directed and written by Johannes Roberts, known for such films as 47 METERS DOWN (2017), 47 METERS DOWN: UNCAGED (2019) and THE STRANGERS: PREY AT NIGHT (2018). The film stars Kaya Scodelario, Tom Hooper, Neal McDonough, Avan Jogia, among others. Dark Discussions Podcast takes a look at this new film in the series franchise and gives their thoughts.

We're celebrating the release of Eddie O’Keefe’s film "Shangri-La Suite" with tracks picked by the director and film’s stars - Emily Browning, Luke Grimes & Avan Jogia. One Night — Elvis Presley Bringing it back to the classic early days of Elvis — not the latter-day one that the film’s main characters would set out to kill in 1974. I Want You — Bob Dylan A love song from Bob Dylan’s 1966 classic double album “Blonde on Blonde.” Last Kiss — Frank J Wilson and the Cavaliers The prototypical 1950s tragic teenage pop song. Little Bit of Rain — Karen Dalton A great lost gem from Cherokee folk singer and guitarist Karen Dalton in the early 60s Greenwich Village scene. Half-Breed — Cher The film’s Native American characters are mirrored in Cher’s 1970s hit about the troubles faced by being part-Native and part-white in the USA. California Dreamin’ — The Mamas and The Papas What’s a film about 1970s America without California and The Mamas and The Papas? Nights in White Satin — Moody Blues A staple of the “Shangri-La Suite” era. Cool Summer — Bob Lind Bob Lind is a deep-cut classic of the early 60s folk movement. Girl From The North Country — Link Wray Electric guitar pioneer Link Wray covers Bob Dylan to upbeat and devastating effect. (Read Eddie’s in-depth discussion of this track at Aquarium Drunkard.)
