Texas Man Chases The ChupacabraJoin my Supporters Club for $4.99 per month for exclusive stories:https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/what-if-it-s-true-podcast--5445587/supportA Texas Musician who grew up hunting in rural Oklahoma and considers himself hard to scare, describes two strange encounters in Texas. The first happened in July 2015 in DeWitt County while he was driving his young son and daughter on a quiet gravel road near an overgrown creek. A bipedal creature stepped out of tall grass about 40 yards ahead—mottled gray with sparse bristly hair, a long snout and tall ears like a kangaroo, and tiny arms held close to its body. It moved with an awkward wobbling gait and crossed into the grass without reacting to the vehicle. He briefly grabbed his pistol and started after it for a closer look, but stopped when he realized his kids were alone in the car and he didn't know how the animal might behave. He believes the first animal was a real, physical creature—possibly a mutation or escaped exotic animal—neither aggressive nor afraid, and maybe increasing in number as development pushes wildlife around. His second encounter came in February 2019 after leaving a late-night performance at Luckenbach near Fredericksburg. Driving home around 2 a.m., his headlights caught two huge pale-yellow eyes about ten feet above the road at the treeline by a creek. The figure moved, revealing a massive, dark-haired, humanoid form with no visible neck and unusually long arms; it then dropped lower into the brush while watching him pass. Chris kept his speed steady out of fear it might react, then accelerated once he'd put distance between them, and later returned in daylight but found nothing that could explain what he saw.

    677. This week, we talk to Dustin Granger about  Louisiana politics. As a seasoned financial advisor with over two decades of experience, Dustin Granger has built his career helping Louisiana families navigate the turbulent waters of the Great Recession, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the recurring hurricanes that shape life on the Gulf Coast. A lifelong resident and LSU alumnus, Granger now serves as the Treasurer of the Louisiana Democratic Party. Granger is a leading voice for economic reform and climate resilience. He advocates for a "New Louisiana" that breaks away from traditional corporate-heavy investments to embrace renewable energy, fair taxation, and sustainable infrastructure. In this interview, we discuss his recommendations for the current voting season, his strategies for stabilizing property insurance, his commitment to strengthening the state's middle class, and his ongoing work to revitalize the Democratic infrastructure across the Bayou State. Every year an increasing number of white outlaws, hidden in the caves along the river, harried and robbed the boatmen who floated down from the upper settlements. There were lurking bands of hostile Indians. And there was the river itself with its treacheries; its snags; its mud bars and its floods. It was no unusual thing for an ark to set out as this one was about to do, provided against all foreseeable disasters, and never be heard from afterward. Some were wrecked, some were robbed and their crews obscurely murdered. But no tidings of their fate came back to the solitary homes on the upper Ohio.     To set out on such a voyage with a single man or boy who could not be trusted, might mean the loss of the boat or even of every life on board of her. My guests today on the Online for Authors podcast are Jan Comfort, Karen W. Prescott, Lisa M. Pritchard, Lynda Stoy Stear, Carol Stigger, Jennifer E. Tirrell and myself, authors of the book Carolina Tides.   In my book review, I stated Carolina Tides is a beach-read anthology of short stories by seven authors: Teri M. Brown, Jan Comfort, Karen W. Prescott, Lisa M. Pritchard, Lynda Stoy Stear, Carol Stigger, and Jennifer E. Tirrell. The premise of the anthology is to provide stories for those vacationing on the coast for a week - a story a day for a week-long stay. Each story is vastly different with the coast of North and South Carolina, and authors living on the coast, as the anchor.   Inside you'll find clean romance, adventures, historical fiction, redemption, hurricanes, family ties, and even a creative nonfiction piece on the history of the area. There's something for everyone.   Just as importantly as the stories, 100% of the proceeds from the book are going to support women in need in Brunswick County, NC and Horry County, SC. You don't have to vacation at the beach to love this book, so grab your copy today!   Teri M Brown: Teri is a writer of character-driven fiction and introduces readers to characters they'd love to invite to lunch. Learn more at www.terimbrown.com.   Jan Comfort: Jan enjoys working part-time, reading, volunteering, (occasionally) quilting, hanging out with her faithful cat Boomer, and spending time with family, friends, writer colleagues, and her friends at St. James the Fisherman Episcopal Church in Shallotte.   Karen W. Prescott: Karen is the author of both historical fiction and nonfiction, with a particular interest in place-based stories that blend history, imagination, and human connection. Learn more at www.karenwalczykprescott.com.   Lisa M. Pritchard: Keenly aware that God gifted her with the love of writing, she listens to His voice to guide her work. Learn more: https://www.praying-prodigals.com/media-page   Lynda Stoy Stear: Lynda is a freelance writer living in coastal South Carolina. Lynda is a published nurse author and writes nonfiction, historical fiction, and poetry. Living Seasons Ministry is Lynda's online ministry at https://livingseasonsministry.com.   Carol Stigger: Carol Stigger wrote for international charities and the travel industry before turning to novels. Life has gifted her with friends and adventures across the globe, but the greatest blessing is her family.   Jennifer E. Tirrell: Jennifer E. Tirrell was orphaned by the age of three, and kinship-adopted. Now a transparent and encouraging writer and speaker, she uses her personal story to connect deeply with others. Hong Kong Burning: Simon Elegant on the 2019 Protests

“It was a completely unthinking exercise in cost-cutting that made no sense in terms of the newspaper. I think perhaps if you want to destroy the newspaper, it made sense.” — Simon Elegant on being ‘eliminated' by the Washington Post Hong Kong in 2019. A dismembered body is found in a landfill. A disgraced police superintendent is called back from internal exile to solve it. The city around him is burning. Rather than a John Woo movie, this is the setting for a Simon Elegant thriller. Born in Hong Kong, former Beijing bureau chief for Time magazine, most recently the Washington Post's man in China until Jeff Bezos “eliminated” him three months ago — Elegant has written the definitive Hong Kong novel. First and foremost, City on Fire: A Novel of Hong Kong is a crime thriller. Superintendent Killian Tong — half-Chinese, half-Irish, loved by no one in his department — investigates a murder while his sister is noisily demonstrating on the other side of the barricades. But the book doubles as a compressed history of Hong Kong: from Palmerston's “barren rock” in the 1840s — seized from China after the opium wars — through the ninety-nine-year lease, the handover in 1997, and the slow strangulation of the “one country, two systems” promise. Elegant is neither a hardline China hawk nor an apologist for Beijing. Yes, he credits the British with a relatively enlightened administration — from its public housing to the uncorrupt civil service that inspired the Singapore model. But he is also clear about what happened after 1997. Hong Kong people assumed Beijing would honour the Thatcher-Deng terms, and then discovered, to their horror, that they had no rights. It was a silent coup rather than a gaudy takeover of power. And so the 2019 protests — when a million people went onto the streets — are not just a backdrop to City on Fire but also the real-life stage on which Hong Kong burnt. Five Takeaways •       Enlightened Colonialism — With Caveats: Was Hong Kong an example of enlightened British colonialism? Elegant says: relatively, yes. The administration was light-handed. The public housing was so good that Singapore copied it. The civil service was — after 1972, when they had to create the ICAC following a police corruption scandal — genuinely clean. Milton Friedman praised the free-market model. But it was also racialized: the upper levels were almost entirely white Anglo, and the Chinese were largely excluded from administrative power. Governor Jock MacLehose changed this. Enlightened colonialism, Elegant concludes, is not a contradiction in terms — but it is relative. Compared to the Belgian Congo, Hong Kong was paradise. •       One Country, Two Systems: A Promise Broken: The terms negotiated by Thatcher and Deng in the 1980s guaranteed Hong Kong's autonomy until 2047. Hong Kong people assumed these terms were real and would be adhered to. They were not. The first attempt to pass a national security law came in 2004. There were mass protests in 2014. In 2019, a million people — in a city of six million — were on the streets. Beijing's choice was not between crushing them or not. It was between blood in the streets and a silent coup. They chose the silent coup. The national security law of 2020 was the final instrument. There is no longer any meaningful “one country, two systems.” •       The Policeman as Moral Complexity: Elegant's decision to make his protagonist a policeman — rather than a protester — is the novel's central artistic choice. Superintendent Killian Tong is not a villain. He is a man caught between institutions he has served his whole life and a conscience that knows what's happening is wrong. His younger sister is on the other side of the barricades. The murder investigation forces him to confront not just the crime but the system that made it possible. Elegant wanted to write about moral complexity, not propaganda — and the only way to do that was to give the story to the person most implicated in the system. •       Bezos ‘Eliminated' the Washington Post's Foreign Staff: Simon Elegant's final paycheck from the Washington Post used the word “eliminated.” He was one of 35-40 foreign correspondents let go in a single exercise — one of the biggest foreign staffs at any American newspaper. No one, he says, can explain what the thinking was, or if there was any. Every person he meets in Washington has cancelled their subscription. The Post still has excellent national security reporters, but in terms of foreign coverage it is, Elegant says, “doomed.” His conclusion: “perhaps if you want to destroy the newspaper, it made sense.” •       Hemingway's Iceberg, Applied: What did writing fiction teach Simon Elegant after a career in journalism? The iceberg principle, which Hemingway described: seven-eighths of a book — the knowledge, the research, the reported detail — should sit below the waterline. Only the tippy-top should be visible. The weight of the knowledge gives the visible surface its authority. The book started at 128,000 words — every reported detail jammed in. By the third or fourth round of cuts with the editor's blade, it was 75,000. The lesson: don't jam in your entire notebook. Fiction goes more directly into the heart. It bypasses the brain and seeks a different truth. About the Guest Simon Elegant is a journalist and novelist born in Hong Kong. He was Beijing bureau chief for Time magazine and most recently China bureau chief for the Washington Post. He is the author of City on Fire: A Novel of Hong Kong (Pegasus Crime, May 5, 2026), A Floating Life (Ecco/HarperCollins), and A Chinese Wedding (Piatkus). He is based in Kuala Lumpur. References: •       City on Fire: A Novel of Hong Kong by Simon Elegant (Pegasus Crime, May 5, 2026). •       Episode 2870: Eyck Freymann on Defending Taiwan: A Strategy to Prevent War with China — the companion episode on Taiwan and the growing China crisis. About Keen On America Nobody asks more awkward questions than the Anglo-American writer and filmmaker Andrew Keen. In Keen On America, Andrew brings his pointed Transatlantic wit to making sense of the United States — hosting daily interviews about the history and future of this now venerable Republic. With nearly 2,900 episodes since the show launched on TechCrunch in 2010, Keen On America is the most prolific intellectual interview show in the history of podcasting. WebsiteSubstackYouTubeApple Pod...

The Peter Boyles Show - May 9, 2026 Hour 4: This hour brings Jonathan Flora and Deborah Flora into studio with Peter Boyles for another deep dive into the controversy surrounding Victor Marx and the fallout from the earlier hours of the show. The conversation shifts from basic questions about Marx’s background into a broader discussion about media scrutiny, political campaigns, credibility, and how public figures build larger-than-life personal stories. Jonathan Flora pushes into the documentary and storytelling side of the issue, while Deborah Flora talks through the political and public perception angles as Boyles revisits claims involving overseas missions, military-style narratives, and campaign questions. The hour feels less like an interview and more like a roundtable trying to sort out what’s fact, what’s exaggeration, and why the story has become such a major topic in Colorado political circles.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Freshly freed from quicksand, the party returns to the river to clean off the grit and wet sand, making a quick plan before continuing their journey. They decide that Elaith and Rou will forge ahead while Trix leaps among the branches to spy the trail ahead. With the humidity too high to dry their clothes, the party dons wet clothing and gets back on track. As they push through the underbrush, the party hears the sound of a child crying. They veer off course to check out the sound and find the sound comes from a mass of tangled vines. Trix peers down from above and sees what appears to be a small form wrapped in something purple, the form shaking with each sob. Rou and Elaith head into the vines to help Trix get a closer look, and quickly realize it's a mistake when Rou is grappled by vines that draw him closer to a gaping, toothed maw. Trix is able to make quick work of the vines with their explosive arrows, which causes the plant to disappear into the brush. Returning to their original path, the party experiences a moment of peace before Elaith is grabbed by a draping vine and pulled up into the canopy.  Follow Dax @gmdax, Kappa @TheKappaChris, Sebastian @sebastianyue and Wren @ThornyDryad  EPISODE CREDITS: Produced by DaxOpening theme music, editing and mixing by WrenLogo Artwork design by JessieCharacter Artwork design by RiyuskiSegment music and sound effects licensed through Epidemic SoundLINKS:Be sure to follow and tag Roads Uncharted on Bluesky!

Bigfoot Dragged Her Through the WindowJoin my Supporters Club for $4.99 per month for exclusive stories:https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/what-if-it-s-true-podcast--5445587/supportIn 1996, Roger—an all‑around skeptic and professional scientist—reconnected with a former college roommate who belonged to a ghost‑hunting club and invited him on an overnight hunt at Beaver Creek State Park in Ohio. Roger joined the group in a remote, heavily wooded area known among enthusiasts for supposed hauntings. After setting up camp, they compared equipment and methods: an EMF meter, digital thermometer for “cold spots,” Polaroid and electronic cameras for “orbs,” an expensive infrared video camera, and an EVP recorder that might capture voices in white noise (which skeptics attribute to pareidolia). The group even encountered a Bigfoot hunter who exchanged business cards with them, prompting good‑natured jokes about how each group probably seemed ridiculous to the other. Once darkness fell, the ghost hunters visited several rumored hotspots—old canal locks and other locations tied to local legends—navigating in near total darkness, where Roger narrowly avoided stepping off an unseen drop at an abandoned lock. After more fruitless searching (including attempts to provoke the spirit of Pretty Boy Floyd), the night finally turned strange at a cemetery with dozens of graves dating back to the 1800s. Using the infrared camera, the group observed bright, rubber‑band‑shaped forms hovering above them, expanding and contracting, then diving into grave mounds or headstones and disappearing, while others seemed to emerge and drift along. Roger couldn't explain what he saw, and the group watched for about half an hour before returning to camp around 3 a.m.; years later, Roger remains mystified by that inexplicable display.

When two friends hear a commotion in their mysterious new neighbor's apartment, they go to check, only to find the door open, and the apartment completely empty...well, almost empty. Genre: Mystery, Fantasy   Excerpt:The only object in the entire apartment was lying on the tiled kitchen floor. Broken into several pieces. A mug. I could make out a design on one of the larger shards. An eye. A wide open eye, just staring. I felt the hairs on my neck rise. I blinked. A liquid that looked like pink-orange milk was spattered across the tile, as if it spilled from the mug as the mug fell. Had we just walked into a crime scene?   The Wheel of Fiction Turns. Welcome back to Impact Theory! In today's episode, Tom Bilyeu sits down with returning guest Dr. Gad Saad, evolutionary behavioral scientist and author, for a provocative and deeply insightful conversation about the rise of antisemitism, conspiracy theories, and the complexities of cultural values in the modern world. Dr. Gad Saad unpacks his viral critique of Tucker Carlson, explains the psychological roots of Jew hatred, and explores how identity, history, and cultural dynamics shape both prejudice and excellence. The discussion ranges from the misunderstood role of Jewish organizations like Chabad, to the repeating cycles of scapegoating throughout history, and the “punching above their weight” phenomenon seen in Jewish communities globally. Together, Tom Bilyeu and Dr. Gad Saad take on tough questions about immigration, the expansionary nature of ideologies, the limits of empathy, and whether Western societies are putting themselves at risk through unchecked compassion. Revealing, controversial, and refreshingly honest, this episode challenges you to reevaluate the beliefs and biases driving today's social conflicts—and to consider the power of values, heritage, and evolutionary psychology in shaping our world. Caroline Muirhead is a smart, beautiful doctor in Glasgow swept up in a romance where things gets … dark. Sarah wanted to talk about this show, because it illustrates troubling habits of female accommodation she's seen in MeToo cases, a tendency to get caught in a trap of people-pleasing. Nancy isn't sure she agrees with that interpretation — she's most disturbed by the Olympic record-level of videos this woman filmed of herself — but they have a free-ranging discussion about refusing to let go of the dream, whether the cops failed Muirhead, drama-seeking mixed with substance abuse, the challenge of confronting someone you're dating, and the grand opera of the show's climax, which deserves to be turned into a novel (we're looking at you, Kat Rosenfield.) Also discussed: * Nancy bonds with childhood friends from pre-Lena Dunham Brooklyn* When the Pulitzer happens to a colleague* “I welcome the insufferability”* FBI opens investigation against Atlantic journalist?* White racial grievance at the New York Times* Anthony Scaramucci = not just good for f-bombs* “Murder as snack”* The high-wire conversations demanded by intimacy* What violence is my partner capable of? * Fiction writing is “the spooky art”* Toni Morrison is whoa, channeling from another dimension* Yes, Nancy is STILL reading Anna KareninaPlus: The prison documentary that made Sarah want to quilt, Nancy on an NBA great, the ick of “Mind of a Serial Killer: The Experience!” exhibition — and more! Send us a text! We'd love to hear your thoughts on the show.In this episode of The Resilient Writers Radio Show, I'm joined by Aga Maksimowska, author of Becalming and Giant, for a thoughtful conversation about voice, literary fiction, and what it means to return to a character after more than a decade. Aga's latest novel, Becalming, is anything but calm. It's propulsive, emotionally layered, and deeply attentive to the messy, often contradictory experience of early adulthood—something Aga knew from the beginning she wanted to capture on the page.We begin by talking about Gosia, the protagonist of Becalming, who readers may recognize from Aga's earlier novel Giant. Though Aga never intended to write a sequel, Gosia returned—older, more complicated, and shaped by the difficult work of becoming an adult while still carrying the imprint of childhood. Aga shares what it was like to revisit a character she already knew and discover how much more there was to uncover once Gosia was placed in new relationships, new responsibilities, and the complicated emotional terrain of adulthood.Aga also talks about her deep love of first-person narrative and voice-driven fiction. We explore why she's drawn to intimate, character-rich storytelling and how her background in journalism shaped her curiosity about people and the stories they carry. She reflects on the craft choices behind Becalming—particularly her desire to write about frustration, disappointment, and emotional upheaval without creating an angry narrator. Instead, she leans into humor, tenderness, and the kind of emotional complexity that feels deeply human without tipping into sentimentality. One of the most fascinating parts of our conversation centers on language, migration, and identity. Aga shares how writing across cultures allows her to explore the ways personality shifts through language, and how Gosia is, in many ways, a different person in Polish than she is in English. ✨ It's a rich conversation about inheritance, history, and how identity is shaped not only by where we come from, but by the language we move through. We also talk about titles, process, and Aga's affection for difficult books—the kind that ask readers to do a little work, to make leaps, and to trust what's unfolding on the page. She shares why Becalming became the right title, how she wrote much of the book at 5 a.m. and in Toronto libraries, and why she believes some books are meant to stay in the drawer. It's a generous, thoughtful conversation about writing with depth, trusting your instincts, and allowing the work to become what it wants to be.

The novelist, essayist, and short-story writer George Saunders—widely celebrated for his novel Lincoln in the Bardo (2017), which won the Man Booker Prize, and book of short stories Tenth of December (2013)—has made it his mission to “de-dullify” the world through his clear-eyed, empathic, often-puckish prose. There's an unwavering spirit of generosity embedded in the way Saunders tells stories and teaches his craft that ensures his readers and students alike stay along for the ride. Saunders's curiosity about the afterlife, a recurring motif in his writing, rises to the fore in his latest novel, Vigil, which follows a pair of ghostly figures as they visit the deathbed of a prideful, climate-change-denying Texas oil tycoon. On this episode, he shares how practicing meditation has shifted his approach to writing and his outlook on life, the underlying importance of humor in his work, and why to be a good storyteller is akin to being a good host.  Special thanks to our Season 13 presenting partner, Van Cleef & Arpels. Welcome back to Cheers with Nat – the podcast dedicated to cheering on women in drinks. In this episode, we're continuing our conversation with Becky Paskin, drinks journalist and founder of the OurWhisky Foundation. If you haven't yet heard part 1 of this episode, do start there, then come on back here for more.  For those of you that are caught up, we pick up right where we left off – with the experience that led Becky to say "never again", including what happened 6 years ago and its impact since.  Becky then tells us more about her latest project, Drink This, along with her tasting events and TV work. And we have lots of fun with our last call round – quick questions, not so quick answers this time around! I also wanted to share a content warning that we do discuss a cancer scare and how Becky has since learned to put herself and her health first. As you can probably tell, we touch on a wide range of topics in this conversation and I'm incredibly grateful to Becky for being so open and honest throughout. What stuck with me from this conversation On the learnings from her experience calling out Jim Murray's sexist language: "…the amount of messages I received from women off the back of this one incident made me say to myself – maybe this is a promise and driving thing really – never again. I will never let a single woman experience the sort of things I've just experienced and I will never let the next generation of women coming into this industry experience the sort of things that these women are telling me they have." On priorities: "You can keep giving yourself to others to make them happy and you can keep putting yourself into work, thinking that those accomplishments are going to make you happy, but you have to prioritize yourself. Whatever that looks like for you as an individual. Put yourself first every single day… and the rest of the day can be for anybody else. But if you don't put yourself first, no one else is going to." On this conversation: "I just want to put it on the record that I think the questions that you've asked in this podcast… they've been the most insightful and interesting questions I've ever been asked in my career." It Reached Out and Touched His FaceJoin my Supporters Club for $4.99 per month for exclusive stories:https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/what-if-it-s-true-podcast--5445587/supportIn the fall of 1993 near Columbiana, Ohio, 19-year-old engineer Ray and a friend were creep-hunting raccoons on a clear, full-moon night without dogs. After splitting up to cover more ground, Ray sat down to rest on a steep hill, quickly falling into a deep sleep for three hours. He awoke disoriented, then continued through the beautiful moonlit woods until he climbed another hill and froze at the sight of a massive bipedal creature silhouetted against the sky on the ridge above, swaying back and forth in apparent agitation. For ten tense minutes the two stared at each other at about 40 yards; Ray considered shining his light or firing his .22 rifle but ultimately held still, sensing the creature's overwhelming size made any attack futile. The being paralleled him for roughly a mile along the ridge as he followed a winding creek, until it vanished from view. Moments later, something very close rumbled and a rough, leathery hand wiped across his face and neck, triggering raw panic. Ray ran until he collapsed exhausted in a ditch beside a gravel road. His worried friend soon found him in a truck around 3:45 a.m. Ray never told him the full story, claiming only that he had fallen asleep and gotten lost. He never hunted in the woods again for the next 33 years.
