Kate and Mandy talk to peafessional Rebecca, founder of ADHD advocacy and events organisation My Special Child and the National Peke Centre, which offers positive, strengths-based clinical support for ADHD, autism, anxiety, sensory challenges and regulation. Rebecca has lived experience of ADHD and is a pea mum to children with ADHD and intellectual disabilities. Rebecca also has a neurodivergent partner and mother, so is well immersed in the neurodivergent community in both work and life! She is committed to educating the community about ADHD and addressing all the misunderstandings, lack of awareness and stigma that can be so damaging and harmful. Rebecca started My Special Child and the National Peke Centre to address the lack of support and availability of accurate, reliable information for parents. At the Peke Centre, a range of different peafessionals offer support that leaves kids and families feeling good about themselves! Rebecca plans to set up dedicated schools in the future to help better address the needs of neurodivergent peashoots who may be experiencing discrimination and exclusion from mainstreams schools. Rebecca offers advice and tips for parents and educators, reflects on the lack of formal training in ADHD for educators and provides great information about PDA (pathological demand avoidance) – including understanding what capacity a child has to process and respond to a demand in the moment, and having realistic expectations about how consistent a child can actually be. Kate, Mandy and Rebecca also reflect on the shift in parenting skills needed to best care for a neurodivergent child, including letting go of the parenting tactics learned from our Baby Boomer parents, such as demanding compliance no matter what. Rebecca encourages everyone to keep accepting that there's always something to learn to help us better support neurodivergent kids and adults! Erin Keam's Conversations about Closets with my Closest 1000 friends.
Rebecca says: “I have 20+ years of HR experience, working in companies that run that gamut - from Fortune 50 companies to startups running with self-management. I launched HRuprise when I realized just how much is stacked against employees, including the role of HR. (And I still think we should have more conversation about that in HR.) HRuprise is a platform that makes it possible for everyone to get their own HR resource. I'm also a breast cancer survivor. More than that, I made it through chemo, multiple surgeries, and radiation during a global pandemic. In fact, it was my experience as a patient that inspired me to launch the HRuprise platform. Guest Rebecca Oettinger Feder, Dartmouth '96, knew enough about business after leaving college to know that she didn’t know enough. After a rotational program and an executive MBA, she realized she was drawn most to Human Resources, which she came to regard as more than just an enabling function to the businesses of which she was a part. Her roles supporting senior managers across the entirety of a business gave her an intimate look at all sides of the business and a courtside seat to how senior executives make decisions. But with the growth of her career—serving many business units within giant global companies that required more and more days on the road and away from family—she realized she needed to make a change. Luckily a decade before, when she was just contemplated motherhood, she had drawn up a business plan for her own HR consultancy. At the time, trusted advisors told her she needed more experience and connections, but when she brushed off the plan all those years later, she was on her way.In this episode, find out from Rebecca how sometimes it’s the combination of experience, connections, and timing that leads to the impact you are after…on ROADS TAKEN...with Leslie Jennings Rowley. About This Episode's GuestRebecca Oettinger Feder is principal consultant at Princeton HR Insight, LLC. With extensive experience in HR management roles with global organizations, including as McMaster-Carr, Bristol Myers Squibb, and Tyco/Johnson Controls, she now advises clients in a range of industries through her own firm. There are unique challenges leaders face as they lead a hybrid team. Leaders today need to be more authentic, more empathetic, and much more real. Now is the time to demonstrate the authenticity that our team members have always wanted at work, and remember that bringing your authentic self to work is good for business.Have you seen the same resilience in the workforce in reaction to COVID that you’ve seen in children as they adapt? The workforce has shown tremendous resilience. The managers who are regularly checking in, offering support and encouragement to their staff, seeing how they’re coping are doing well in building resilience on their teams. These leaders are embracing this new normal, which is anything but normal, and understand that things are going to be different. The leaders who are struggling now seem to be the ones who struggled before the pandemic. They are the ones who didn’t have relationships with their employees, hadn’t built trust and misperceived their team members as robots. Lead A Hybrid Team ByFocusing on Inclusion - Make sure everyone is on the same playing field. Not everyone is ready to go back to the office right now. Even though you have some people in the office, and even though we all recognize the value of face-to-face communication, we still need to be having Zoom meetings so that one person isn’t left behind. We’re all on the same playing field when we do this. You need to make sure everyone is on the same playing field. Discover Your Unconscious BiasesRemote employees will exacerbate your own baggage and biases about particular employees. Who you think is your star player you could tend to give them the benefit of the doubt more often than your average player. You need to make sure that you are constantly asking yourself, are there people on your team that you have not given a fair share to? And what would that look like if you did? Ensure that you are not just reinforcing your own biases and predispositions about particular employees. These biases are now diving into who’s remote and who is staying home? You must be aware around all places. Offering Support It’s kind of like parenting, each child needs something different, and it's an ebb and flow. There are some children that are just going to be needier no matter what. As the leader, it’s about you being fair and giving the benefit of the doubt to some employees versus other employees. Leaders need to remember the social issues, particularly minorities and let them know that you are there for them and that you get it. To offer support to your team right now:Check-in RegularlyLeaders should be seeing changes in people and being in tune with them. Make sure they know that you’re thinking about them and that you get it. Leaders need to look for signs of burnout. Are you noticing employees who are acting differently? Are you giving them time to talk about their personal life? Are they now quick to anger when before they were calm and composed? Are they now quiet when they use to be very outgoing? Be More AuthenticBringing your authentic self to work is good business. Know your employees as humans not as robots. Younger leaders are really thriving because they’ve been able to bring in this authenticity that they’ve always wanted to bring into work. We spend a lot of time at work, and to have to feel like you need to be someone else is hard, it gets old and it's uncomfortable. If you’re not authentic, you're not able to do your best work. Now this begs the question, who are you? Who is your whole self? It’s requiring reflection from many leaders and workers and some are struggling with it more than others. We have to redefine ourselves. Find Rebecca on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/rebecca-m-knight-3667a94/

Hey everyone! You're listening to episode number 50!Today's episode is quite intriguing. I get to talk to Rebeka LaRobardiere, relationship and certified sex coach. We talk all about how to get what you want in the bedroom and how to talk to your kids about sex. I know... scary! HAHAHA But sex is a big, huge deal in our society. Sex sells. Sex is naughty and secretive. But with all that's going on in the world, this is super important to me. We must be our children's educators so they know what's inappropriate when someone else approaches them. And it never hurts to get more comfortable talking about with our spouse either. After all, we're supposed to do this with them for the rest of forever, God willing. So let's get what we want, ladies!Rebekah is a Relationship and Certified Sex Coach practicing in Northern California. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and Certification in Sex and Relationship Coaching. Rebekah continues to further her education as a lifelong student. Rebekah and Sam are both entrepreneurs at heart and presently co-own Theory Collaborative, an award-winning specialty coffee roastery and cafe in Redding, California. When she’s not coaching, you will find Rebekah expanding her knowledge in a broad range of topics regarding sex and relationships. Psychology, relationship dynamics, and the enneagram; connecting with friends and family; cooking, entertaining, sunbathing, and pushing her physical limits as an avid admirer of running—training for half marathons. In this Podcast Episode Rebecca of @becca.is.love discussed the Third Limb of Yoga: Asana. The Third Limb of the Eight Limbs of Yoga looks at the idea of Sthira and Sukham: that which is steady and that which is comfortable. Asana is an embodiment of sthira and sukham, and Rebecca discusses that you should bring this to your physical practice on the mat. Patanjali describes asana as a pose in which you are steady, and comfortable - thus this idea forms the basis of the physical asana practice. Asana is the only physical practice discussed in the Eight Limbs of Yoga, and even so it is to prepare the body and mind for meditation, or communion with the divine. Thus, Asana is an important part of the Eight Limbs of Yoga. Find Rebecca on her website @becca-is-love.com or follow her on instagram: @becca.is.love

You CAN turn your home into that feel-good place that you desire. Being confined to four walls this past month has really put me in the mood to move things around and get creative on making more space. Here’s a little secret not many people know—back in high school I was contemplating going to college for interior design! Unfortunately, I took one auto-cad class and realized, nope—this is not my jam. Lucky for me, I can live vicariously through all the great content created by Rebecca West, an award-winning interior designer who’s been featured in Success Magazine, Seattle Refined, Uniquely Northwest, and more. Thirteen years ago, Rebecca looked around her house and realized I can’t keep living like this. She transformed her home into the space of her dreams, and she didn’t let her recent-divorce budget stop her! Since then, she's been on a mission to help people find happiness in life by making happiness at home. Rebecca uses design psychology to help people create homes that encourage them to achieve their goals. She empowers homeowners to create spaces that ignore the “rules” and simply make them happy. There is so much goodness in this conversation, but here are a few highlights: What it takes to decorate your home on a small budgetFinding permission to follow through your with your ideasThe trick to decorating your home when you and your partner have different aestheticsHow your home could be blocking you from achieving your goalsThere is so much here to put into practice! Rebecca Deng, author of What They Meant for Evil, sits down and shares her story of growing up in a small village in South Sudan, fleeing to a refugee camp in Kenya, and eventually qualifying to come to the United States as only one of 79 Lost Girls given refugee status. She shares how she found a community of support in the church at the refugee camp where she could sing and dance and mourn with those around her, and the way that life in the United States changed her forever. Plus...we talk about her first experience with snow (she thought the world was ending), how she navigated the American education system and eventually earned her Master's Degree, and the way that God was with her through it all. Where to Find Rebecca: Facebook Instagram "What They Meant for Evil" What she recommends: What She Says: "The focus on lamentation, and the singing of lamentation was so good. We would sing, "Oh, God, why is this suffering happening to me?" And church was the only place you could talk about that." "The good thing was that the community was there. If you would lose someone, people would come to your house for seven days and just love you." "My prayer always was: If I make it out, that will be really good...but if I don't make it to the United States, please guard my heart so I can be happy for others." "He is a God of abundance, and wants us to have joy...and that's where I see him showing up over and over again in my life." "We don't have to have the same background or speak the same language...people are people." "This world is God's mission. He has been at work on it from the beginning of time, and he will be at work on it until the end of time...whether or not I am in it." Today on the show Jodi interviews Rebecca Undem, author of How Mommy Got Her Groove Back (2016). Here are some highlights: Jodi and Rebecca discussed how Rebecca came to write a book. Rebecca has always been drawn to storytelling and had writing a book on her “dream list.” She started the book thinking it would be a collection of repurposed blog posts but it became something altogether different. She thought it would be a good tool to have to enhance her speaking career, which is her trade. Rebecca noted that she had self-doubt about writing a memoir when she was in her mid-30s and had lived a life without a major trauma. However, she trusted the process and found the right audience for it. Rebecca shared that her favorite part of the writing/publishing process was interviewing living family members to learn their memories and recollections. Rebecca and Jodi talked about how our reality is shaped by our perception. When asked about her least favorite part of the process, Rebecca likened the writing process to a marathon. You start out energized but then there are sometimes long stretches before the next water station. Those stations are collaborations with a coach, editor, etc., and they provide just enough sustenance to keep going. Rebecca noted that because the book shares so much of her story, it almost prequalifies her as a speaker. Her signature talk is called “Living Big in the Life You’re In,” and copies of the book are typically included in her speaking arrangement. Rebecca offered this advice for other authors: Not everyone should write a book, but if you have that desire, just start. Be a good steward of that desire. With regard to a book and generally in business, serve people the way you think you can. Don’t have squirrel syndrome and/or try to do everything. Jodi and Rebecca noted their mutual friend Brit Kolo of marketingpersonalities.com[LINK], who often says, “If you don’t feel good, your audience won’t feel good.” Rebecca shared that she’s currently reading mainly nonprofit management books, because she recently started a nonprofit, but that her favorite book this year was Educated by Tara Westover.. Standout Quotes:They see my whole mess and they love me anyway. (Traci Ruble)My heart is never wrong. It's just getting in there that is the challenge. (Traci Ruble)Boundaries are about finding that balance between connection and protection. (Rebecca Wong)Rebecca Wong's spirit and her way of being are so audible in the way she speaks, breaths, takes long pauses to take in an interaction fully, and to let connection drive how she relates. I am thrilled you get to meet her here. I hope you will join me in listening to one of my favorite podcasts, up for an award. Find Rebecca's therapy work and her podcast at Connectfulness. Biography: Rebecca WongAll of my life, I’ve been fascinated by what it means to be human together. This has driven me deep into the study of art, film and storytelling, experiential learning, relationships, sexuality, the human reproductive life cycle, the transmission of intergenerational trauma, parenthood, attachment, loss and human behavior, and performance. And the same drive has guided me to deepen my professional studies into Relational Life and Sex Therapy. My experiential teaching style draws from a range of leadership experiences over the past decades ranging from Wilderness Field Instructor to TMI Project Workshop Facilitator.I admire Rebecca so much even though we have never seen each other in real life. I consider her a wise sage who has balanced challenging the status quo with grace and artistry few have matched, imho. While out wandering through the woods, I had a thought. "Maybe I should talk about why I am doing this podcast on the podcast." But I want to be "in discovery" and "in connection" - not rehearsed. As I listen to my own words here, I can hear how internal I am. But what is more, you can hear how being 'in connection' as Rebecca does so well, allows you to go deeper. Rebecca captures the essence of my heart and I learned about myself and for that, I am so grateful to get to be in dialogue with her. You can find more out about Rebecca on her website here.
