Meet Kimberly Fleer, an industry veteran and mental wellness advocate. Kimberly shares her personal story of entering the hospitality world at age 15 to find financial support and a sense of family that was absent at home, rapidly excelling in roles from server to sommelier. While the industry provided valuable skills and camaraderie, it also became a means to mask and ignore childhood trauma, eventually leading to severe substance abuse. After achieving sobriety in 2020and losing a close friend to overdose, Kimberly recognized a critical gap in the industry's system of care: a lack of resources, education, and open conversation about mental health and recovery. She now works to address this through her company, Last Call, by helping employers embed preventative measures, normalize vulnerable conversations, and create recovery-friendly workplaces to save lives, improve culture, and dramatically reduce high turnover rates. 10 Takeaways Hospitality as a Double-Edged Sword: The industry offers family and community, but its high-pressure, hard-working, and "play hard" culture can easily enable substance abuse as a coping mechanism for underlying trauma. The System of Care Failure: Historically, the industry lacks onboarding or continuous resources for mental health, making it difficult for staff to seek or even know about recovery pathways (detox, inpatient, etc.). Vulnerability is Leadership Strength: Leaders who are authentic and vulnerable about their own challenges (e.g., stress, personal issues) build trust and create a safe culture, countering the pressure for staff to appear flawless. The Stigma Barrier: Normalization of excessive use makes staff fear speaking up about their struggles, as it's often incorrectly perceived as a sign of weakness or a risk to their job security. Post-Shift Decompression: Service staff are often in "fight or flight" mode after an intense shift. Employers need to provide healthy, non-alcoholic ways (e.g., group de-briefs, self-care education) to regulate the nervous systeminstead of immediately turning to alcohol/drugs. Prevention Over Reaction: Proactive measures—starting with mental health education in the onboarding processand daily pre/post-shift check-ins—are vital to prevent burnout and crisis situations. Run Towards the Storm: A core theme is the need for leaders to face difficult conversations and systemic issues head-on, rather than ignoring or running away from them. Recovery Boosts Retention: Actively hiring and supporting people in recovery leads to exceptionally high staff retention (e.g., 94% retention in one case study) and creates a more reliable, motivated workforce. Transferable Skills: The industry attracts and develops highly talented individuals with immense transferable skills, making it an excellent place to build a career, especially for those seeking a fresh start. Bring the Human Back: The ultimate goal is to "bring the human back to hospitality" by prioritizing the wellness of the people who serve, recognizing that personal health is essential to professional performance.

Today we're hitting three big money-saving pillars straight from my own life: cutting your own hair, eating at home, and never paying retail. These simple habits save me thousands every year — and they'll do the same for you.

They discuss updating our mindset around how we think of continence care, and why we should talk about it more if we have issues around our bladder and believe that we can save money on care.

Every year, Medicare Open Enrollment presents an important opportunity for retirees and individuals enrolled in Medicare to review, update, and make changes to their health and prescription drug coverage. If you're on Medicare or approaching retirement, understanding the enrollment period and your options is crucial to ensuring comprehensive and cost-effective health care. I'm sharing the seven essential things you need to know to make the most of this important window. Whether you're already enrolled in Medicare or want to stay ahead of your retirement planning, I explain key dates, your options for switching plans, how to review or update your prescription drug coverage, and what to do if your health or coverage needs have changed. Tune in to learn about navigating Medicare Advantage, Medigap, and everything you should consider before December 7th to keep your health and finances on track as you plan your ideal retirement. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... [01:56] Seven key things to know about Medicare open enrollment. [03:04] Making changes to your Medicare supplemental coverage. [04:30] Prescription drug plan options. [05:21] How to evaluate and change Medicare Advantage plans. 07:30] Switching from a Medicare Advantage plan to a Medigap plan. [12:17] Effective dates for making Medicare Changes. What Is Medicare Open Enrollment? Medicare Open Enrollment occurs annually from October 15th to December 7th. During this time, anyone currently enrolled in Medicare has the chance to make changes to their coverage. This window allows you to switch plans, sign up for supplemental coverage, or alter your prescription drug benefits, flexibility that's vital as your health needs or financial circumstances shift. It's important to note that this period is only for those already enrolled in Medicare, not for newly eligible individuals. This annual period matters for anyone with existing Medicare coverage. If you're new to Medicare, say, your 65th birthday is coming up, your initial enrollment period is separate, and open enrollment won't apply until the following year. Retirees and older people who have already navigated their initial sign-up should take advantage of open enrollment to ensure their health plan continues to meet their needs. Your Medicare Options Medicare coverage comes in several forms: Original Medicare (Parts A & B): Provides hospital and medical insurance. Medicare Advantage: All-in-one alternatives to Original Medicare, often with additional benefits and lower out-of-pocket costs. Medigap (Medicare Supplement): Offers extra coverage to help pay healthcare costs not covered by Original Medicare. Open enrollment is your chance to change from one type to another, such as moving from a Medicare Advantage plan to a Medigap policy or vice versa. Switching plans can bring savings or better coverage, depending on your health situation, but there are specific rules, like the six-month initial enrollment for Medigap and state-specific regulations, that you must navigate. Prescription Drug Plans: Reviewing and Updating Part D Prescription needs often change, and so do the offerings of Part D drug plans. This period lets you join, drop, or switch your drug coverage. If your current plan is discontinuing a medication you rely on or raising costs, research alternatives in your area. Lack of creditable drug coverage carries penalties, making it important to have either Part D or a Medicare Advantage plan with drug benefits. Switching Medicare Advantage Plans Medicare Advantage plans differ in costs, networks, and coverage options, and these can change each year. If your doctors are no longer covered or prescription benefits shift unfavorably, open enrollment is the time to shop for a better-fitting plan. Changes due to pricing or plan termination also allow you to choose a new plan that better fits your situation for the upcoming year. Understanding Medigap Eligibility and State Rules Switching from Medicare Advantage to Medigap isn't always straightforward, especially after your initial six-month enrollment window. Some states, including Connecticut, New York, and Massachusetts, offer more flexibility, letting you change plans without penalties for pre-existing conditions. Outside of these areas and time frames, you may face higher premiums or coverage denial unless a “guaranteed issue period” applies, such as following a plan termination or a move to a different state. Timing and Next Steps Any changes you make during Medicare Open Enrollment become effective January 1st of the following year. It's important to act before the December 7th deadline, so plan ahead, review notices, research alternatives, and consult with trusted advisors if you're unsure. Keeping up annually ensures your coverage fits your evolving health needs and budget. Medicare Open Enrollment can feel overwhelming, but it's a vital tool for retirees aiming for optimal care and cost efficiency. Stay informed, review your options, and take charge of your retirement health plan this open enrollment season. Do you open 10 tabs and forget what you were doing? You're not alone. Our brains have been conditioned to crave distraction—thanks to tech, stress, and overstimulation. Focus isn't just about productivity—it's about presence, creativity, and living a life that feels like yours. In this episode, I explain how chronic stress and dopamine addiction are training your brain to self-interrupt, making it harder than ever to stay on task. Drawing on insights from researchers like Dr. Gloria Mark, I break down how habits like doomscrolling and multitasking are literally rewiring our prefrontal cortexes. But it's not all doom and distraction. I share powerful, research-based strategies to rebuild your focus muscle—from daily breathing hacks and body doubling to my personal “rule of three” method and compassionate productivity practices. You'll also hear how I use unstructured rest, deliberate boredom, and digital boundaries to reconnect with what matters most. If you've ever felt like your brain is broken, this episode will help you reconnect with the calm, focused version of you that still exists—just beneath the noise. We get into: Why focus is the hidden key to creating a meaningful, joyful life. How stress hijacks your brain and kills concentration. Science-backed focus hacks that actually work—no guilt, just relief. Daily habits to rewire your brain away from distraction and back to clarity. Why social media mimics slot machines—and how to break free. Jackie Cummings Koski returns to discuss the fundamental principles of financial independence (FI) and early retirement. The conversation emphasizes the importance of understanding FI—financial independence lets individuals no longer depend on a paycheck, offering options and freedom in life. Jackie shares insights on creating habits, starting small with savings, and the invaluable impact of community on one's financial journey. Strategies such as evaluating expenses and adopting an action-focused mindset are crucial. The duo explores essential concepts like the 4% rule, the significance of compound interest, and how everyday expenses can affect one's FI number, leading to powerful benefits over time. This episode serves as both a refresher for seasoned FI enthusiasts and a primer for newcomers. Key Takeaways: Understanding FI enables individuals to regain control over their finances and lives. Saving money is about liberation, not deprivation; small changes can yield significant benefits over time. The power of community is invaluable in the FI journey; joining groups can provide motivation and insights. Evaluating and optimizing expenses can lead to increased savings and a lower FI target. The 4% rule helps determine how much one can safely withdraw from retirement savings.
