Thanks to our Partners, Pico Technology, and AutelWatch Full Video EpisodeA Dodge Durango came into the shop for a second opinion after being suspected of needing a transmission. The symptoms sounded convincing at first: harsh shifts, apparent slipping, no diagnostic trouble codes, and a vehicle that felt completely wrong on the road. But the actual problem was much simpler. The Durango was stuck in four-low. Once shifted properly through neutral, the harsh shifting, driveline bind, and “slipping” behavior disappeared.Matt uses the case as a springboard into a broader discussion about diagnostic tunnel vision. The point is not just that someone almost condemned a transmission unnecessarily. The deeper issue is how easily a first impression can become the diagnosis. Once the vehicle felt like it was slipping, everything after that could be interpreted through that lens. That is where anchoring, confirmation bias, and premature closure start to become dangerous. The episode also compares the Durango case to a more common misfire scenario. A vehicle comes in with a misfire, the scan tool identifies a cylinder, the car line is known for coil failures, and the diagnosis becomes a coil and plug before much testing happens. That gamble may work most of the time, but the process failure is still there. Being right by probability is not the same as proving the fault.Matt also shares a personal example involving a Mini Cooper that was nearly misdiagnosed as needing a turbo. The actual issue was cam/crank timing related. The mistake became a difficult but important lesson in responsibility, process, and making things right with the customer. The episode closes with a nod to Mel Brooks on his 100th birthday, including Matt's Mount Rushmore of Mel Brooks films: Blazing Saddles, Spaceballs, The Producers, and History of the World, Part One.Watch Durango VideoKey TopicsWhy the Durango seemed like it had a major transmission failureHow four-low can mimic slipping, harsh shifting, and driveline problemsThe importance of reading the owner's manual when unfamiliar indicators appearAnchoring, confirmation bias, and premature closure in diagnosticsWhy “incompetent” may be technically accurate but often incomplete as an explanationThe ethical problem of charging for the wrong repair when the real fix is simpleWhy common failures can make weak testing feel justifiedHow probabilistic diagnosis can work until it does notThe value of owning a mistake and making it rightMel Brooks, comedy, and Matt's Mount Rushmore of Mel Brooks filmsPull Quote Options“The first impression is often the most dangerous piece of data in the whole diagnostic process.”“Being right most of the time does not mean the process was right.”“Customers should not be paying for our anchoring, our confirmation bias, and our premature closure.”“The real danger is not being wrong. The real danger is being done too early.”Episode TakeawaysA symptom that feels obvious can still be misleading. The Durango felt like it was slipping, but the transmission was not the problem.A flashing indicator or odd message on the dash may be the clue. The owner's manual may not feel like a diagnostic tool, but sometimes it is.Common failures can create lazy confidence. A known coil failure pattern or common turbo issue may point in the right direction, but it does not replace verification.Premature closure is expensive. It can cost the customer, the shop, or both.Ethics matter most when the mistake is discovered after the repair. The customer should not pay for a part that did not fix the vehicle just because the shop eventually stumbled into the real fix.A good diagnostic process should include forced questions: What am I anchored to? What evidence am I accepting too easily? What would prove my theory wrong? Thanks to our Partner, Pico TechnologyAre you chasing elusive automotive problems? Stephen Tobolowsky has gifted us with indelible character performances while living an extraordinary life that spans from Texas roots to show biz lore to telepathy and beyond.Stephen reflects on his earliest pull toward Hollywood, when even as a child playing cowboys, he imagined the action as if it were being filmed. That instinct would carry him from Texas to Broadway to Los Angeles, constantly seeking opportunities to create. And his capabilities stretch beyond acting and music to include a Universe connection that has invited intriguing insights, unexplained knowing and“coincidences.” In fact, Stephen's abilities inspired David Byrne to write a song called Radiohead which led the band Radiohead to become exactly that.Best known by many as Groundhog Day's painfully persistent Ned Ryerson, Stephen comes loaded with behind-the-scenes intel on the film's famously complex shoot, during which he and Bill Murray (portraying a weatherman!) were kept on constant standby to shoot the scene in every possible weather condition for director Harold Ramis. The conversation winds from Stephen's participation in Thelma & Louise's iconic final moment to Brad Pitt's instant star quality to a chilling moment, on location for  Mississippi Burning, were Stephen, playing a KKK grand wizard, was pulled aside by a Klansman and told, “We will be watching you.” Stephen opens up about his collaborations and creative relationships, including his connection to playwright Beth Henley and how he helped shape her Pulitzer Prize-winning Crimes of the Heart and his enduring love story and best-friendship with his wife, Actress/Director Ann Hearn. From Memento to Silicon Valley, Stephen reflects on the wide range of roles he's brought to life, offering insight into Christopher Nolan's storytelling brilliance, Norman Lear's landmark contributions and the stark terror of performing Live In Front Of A Studio Audience. He also speaks candidly about being entirely recognizable and shares what folks tend to run over and say when they become HIS Ned Ryerson! And Stephen brings his masterful storytelling to IMDB Roulette, covering One Day At A Time, The Goldbergs, Spaceballs, Glee and Nobody Wants This while weaving Hollywood history with personal perspectives and navigating the curious intersection of art and life.In current media--Weezy: Outlast The Jungle on NetflixLisa: Book, The Correspondent by Virginia EvansPath Points of Interest:Stephen Tobolowsky BooksStephen Tobolowsky - WikipediaThe Tobolowsky Files PodcastStephen Tobolowsky on IMDBStephen Tobolowsky on FacebookOutlast The Jungle The Correspondent by Virginia Evans

Mel Brooks is about to turn 100 years old! When Mel celebrates his upcoming birthday on June 28th, filmmaker Michael Bonfiglio, who has directed (along with Judd Apatow) a joyful and action-packed two-part HBO documentary about the legendary comic and filmmaker, might want to talk to the folks at HBO about changing the title of their film: “Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man!” Otherwise, I'd advise not changing a thing.   Joining Ken on the pod, Michael talks about how Judd's comedic bona vides probably made the difference in convincing Mel to participate in the film. Michael, who previously teamed up with Judd to direct the Emmy-winning documentary “George Carlin's American Dream” (check out Michael Merrill's “Top Docs” season 2 interview with Michael), compares the two comedians and projects. We discuss what has made Mel such a special and impactful comedic force, from his homespun “2,000 Year Old Man” skit, performed with best friend Carl Reiner, to his work in early television, culminating in his breakout film career (“The Producers”, “Blazing Saddles,” ‘Young Frankenstein”, “Spaceballs,” etc.). We discuss Mel's marriage to actress Anne Bancroft and his lingering pain since her death. Not to get too serious, Michael ends by sharing his favorite Mel Brooks moment. Lucky for us, with Mel still creatively active (“Spaceballs: The New One”!), there will no doubt be more signature Mel Brooks moments to come. Happy Birthday, Mel!   “Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man!” is streaming on HBO Max.   The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix.   Follow: @mbonfiglio2000 on Instagram @topdocspod on Instagram and X

Spaceballs. In 1987, legendary filmmaker Mel Brooks wanted to create a Star Wars-like spoof film. He got permission from Star Wars creator George Lucas to create such a film. Spaceballs was a modest box office hit, but in the nearly four decades since its release, the film has become an instant cult classic. The cult classic status of the original film has led to a sequel, Spaceballs: The New One, coming out April 23, 2027, on the 40th anniversary year of the original. In this episode of Twin Cities Trekkies, which is the second part of six of the podcast's Second Star Trek Film Extravaganza, Wes sits down with Justin, a Star Trek fan, to talk about the film.Yes, we are aware this is not a Star Trek movie, but the film does have Star Trek elements such as a matter-energy transporter beam, the Vulcan Nerve Pinch, and the cameo of future Voyager star Tim Russ. This week, we're spending time with Melvin James Kaminsky, better known to the universe as comedy icon and director Mel Brooks! After lampooning westerns, monster movies, and world history, Brooks turned his signature sense of humor to the cinematic sci-fi outings of Star Wars, Alien, 2001, and Planet of the Apes. With an all-star cast including Rick Moranis, John Candy, Joan Rivers, Bill Pullman, and Daphne Zuniga, the film was born from a gentleman's agreement between Brooks and Star Wars creator George Lucas. In return for certain concessions (rule number one: no merchandising) from Brooks, Lucas agreed to handle some of the more technical aspects of the film through his special effects company, Industrial Light & Magic. The result was a cult hit, almost as beloved as the properties it parodies. With a long-promised sequel finally on the way in 2027 (colon The New One, not colon The Search for More Money), we're visiting a galaxy very, very, very, very far away to see if the Schwartz is still with Spaceballs!   For more geeky podcasts visit GonnaGeek.com    You can find us on iTunes under ''Legends Podcast''. It's our 9th anniversary! Noel celebrates the milestone with the great Stephen Tobolowsky. The actor is known for film roles such as insurance agent Ned Ryerson in Groundhog Day and amnesiac Sammy Jankis in Memento. Stephen had a memorable role in Spaceballs. Could he be in the upcoming sequel?  Stephen talks about his horrible experience working with Steven Seagal in The Glimmer Man. He guest-starred on Seinfeld as Tor Eckman, an eccentric holistic healer in the season 2 episode, The Heart Attack. Stephen has played more principals than any actor in TV history (not factchecked).  He also played in a band in his hometown of Dallas, which briefly featured the late great Stevie Ray Vaughn. We discuss our kidney stones, Bar Mitzvahs and more!

From Spider-Verse super suits to The Burbs' danger-red Easter eggs, Trayce Field reveals how costume design becomes character. Costume designer Trayce Field joins Voice of Costume for a vibrant, deeply human conversation about creativity, collaboration, leadership, and visual storytelling. She traces her path from a multicultural childhood and vintage-clothing obsession to a career designing for Poker Face, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, The Burbs, Spider-Noir, Spaceballs 2, and more. Trayce shares how she builds characters from the inside out—grounding even sci-fi, comedy, and superhero costumes in realism, backstory, texture, color, and emotional truth. She breaks down collaborating with Natasha Lyonne on Charlie Cale's lived-in road-warrior look, creating Donald Glover's Prowler super suit in only two weeks, and stepping into The Burbs mid-season while keeping the characters seamless, funny, stylish, and full of Easter eggs. This episode is packed with insight on fitting rooms, actor trust, sourcing unique fashion, department leadership, creative risk, anxiety, ambition, and what it takes to "figure it out" under pressure. We kick off with a the Dodgers spanking the Blue Jays and torn allegiances in Brian's house, then dive into Europe taking dead aim at your kids' screen time. Ireland is rolling out a Government Digital Wallet that'll verify ages before young'uns can doom-scroll their lives away, while Greece went fully scorched-earth and announced a ban on all under-15s using social media at all — announced, naturally, on TikTok.IN THE NEWS, the AI giants (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google) are playing nicely together for once, teaming up through the Frontier Model Forum to stop Chinese firms from essentially photocopying their models on the cheap — billions in revenue, national security, and the small matter of safety guardrails stripped out. Turnabout is fair play? On the legal gambling front, prediction markets scored a federal win as a US appeals court ruled New Jersey can't regulate Kalshi; the Trump family's fingerprints are all over the prediction market space (surprise!), and the data suggests 0.04% of accounts are hoovering up 70% of profits like it's a perfectly healthy ecosystem. Also: the FBI pulled deleted Signal messages out of iPhone notification caches, GoPro is laying off 23% of its workforce while somehow remaining optimistic, and OpenAI is backing an Illinois bill that would shield AI companies from liability even in mass-casualty scenarios... cool. On the plus side, Artemis II astronauts took amazing photos of the Moon... on their iPhones. In APPS & DOODADS: Mercedes recalled its electric G-Wagons because the wheels might literally fall off, Amazon is sunsetting Kindles from 2012 and earlier for no reason anyone can figure out, and Apple Fitness on Apple TV is randomly scrambling workout stacks with no fix in sight — a premium locked ecosystem doing premium locked ecosystem things. In MEDIA CANDY, the crew is watching The Pitt, The Boys, Shrinking, and Daredevil, and you'll want to sit down for this: Mel Brooks and Rick Moranis are back — Spaceballs 2 hits theaters a full year from now even though it's done. Italy slapped Netflix with a court-ordered refund for price hikes going back to 2017, while Netflix simultaneously raised prices for US subscribers and launched Playground, a free kids gaming app that works offline (Peppa Pig and Sesame Street, no ads, no in-app purchases — hook 'em on Dah Dum young!)AT THE LIBRARY, Brian has given up on Breath and Jason reads Four Thousand Weeks and Art Spiegelman's Maus — the Pulitzer-winning Holocaust masterpiece that some people are still trying to ban, because humanity never fully learns.Closing out with THE DARK SIDE WITH DAVE, Treasury Secretary Bessent and Fed Chair Powell apparently called an emergency meeting with bank CEOs over Anthropic's new model "Mythos," which can apparently find and exploit vulnerabilities across major OSes and browsers. The boys also catch up on Maul: Shadow Lord, the Strong Songs podcast's Joni Mitchell deep-dive ("Passions soften into wisdom" — weeping on the plane, apparently), the belated discovery that Marathon launched and nobody noticed, and some genuine moon joy courtesy of NASA's Artemis II astronauts.Sponsors:DeleteMe - Get 20% off your DeleteMe plan when you go to JoinDeleteMe.com/GOG and use promo code GOG at checkout.CleanMyMac - Get Tidy Today!
