Why "Relief" Stretches Are Keeping You in Pain (The 3 Categories)

Back In Shape

Many patients confuse "relief" with "recovery," leading them into a cycle of chronic pain where they manage symptoms without ever addressing the root cause. It is crucial to understand that there are three distinct categories of relief strategies. The first category directly aids the injury, such as spinal decompression which unloads the disc. The second category works indirectly, such as hamstring stretches that improve hip mobility to spare the lumbar spine. However, the third category—which includes common practices like knee hugs, twists, and nerve flossing—provides temporary relief by draining inflammation but simultaneously aggravates the mechanical injury.True recovery requires a shift in mindset from simply chasing the absence of pain to building the resilience of the spine. We often use the analogy of a home renovation: your body is trying to build an extension (heal the tissue), but if you spend your day doing "relief" stretches that torque and twist the spine, you are essentially taking a sledgehammer to the new wall every night. You cannot build strength or stability while constantly irritating the injury. Effective rehabilitation involves stabilising the spine through correct movement patterns—like the squat and hip hinge—and progressively loading these movements. This creates a biological robustnes that allows you to move through the world without triggering the injury, rather than just masking the pain with medication or temporary stretches. We also discuss the systemic issues within standard physiotherapy, highlighted by the story of a GP who joined the Back In Shape Programme because the standard NHS exercises she was forced to prescribe were not working for her own sciatica. Whether you are considering surgery, relying on medication, or contemplating procedures like nerve ablation, you must ask yourself if you are merely taking the batteries out of the smoke alarm while the house burns down. Real healing comes from addressing the fire itself through education, daily management, and a structured strengthening programme that respects the biology of the spine.Key Topics Covered

I am excited to share powerful insights from the latest episode of Capitalist Culture. This time, I sat down with Seth, founder of Precision Biologics and Regenerative Revival, to explore the rapidly expanding world of regenerative medicine, entrepreneurship, and leadership. His perspective on innovation, compliance, patient outcomes, and business execution is both practical and forward-looking.Here are a few highlights from our conversation.Key Lessons and Ideas:• Regenerative Medicine as a Non-Invasive AlternativeSeth explained how regenerative medicine addresses chronic and acute pain without surgery. Rather than masking pain, these therapies signal the body to heal itself, particularly in soft tissue injuries and degenerative conditions.• Stem Cell Therapy in the United StatesThere is a common misconception that patients must travel overseas for stem cell treatments. Seth clarified that umbilical cord-derived products in the United States are ethically sourced from birthing tissue and processed under strict tissue-bank and FDA guidelines. High-quality care is available domestically.• Umbilical Cord vs Autologous Stem CellsSeth described why younger umbilical cord stem cells can be more effective than using a patient's own tissue. At the same time, he emphasized compliance and responsible education, since these therapies are not FDA-approved and must be clearly communicated as experimental.• Education as the Growth EngineA major barrier in regenerative medicine is awareness. Seth uses seminars, in-home services, and hands-on clinic support to educate patients and physicians. Precision Biologics provides not only products, but training, operational systems, and marketing strategy to help clinics succeed.• Business Discipline in MedicineMany physicians struggle not with medicine, but with business. Seth highlighted the importance of marketing, sales conversations around cash pay procedures, and compliant systems that protect patient trust while enabling scale.Industry Curiosities and Forward-Looking Themes:• Capital Flow into Regenerative MedicineThere is significant investor interest flowing into research and startups across stem cells, exosomes, peptides, and hormone replacement therapy. Seth believes we are early in a major growth cycle.• Business in a Box ModelHis upcoming venture focuses on patient access and outcomes through a scalable, systems-driven approach. The emphasis is on clear goals, measurable improvement, and consistent patient feedback.• Expansion into Telehealth and Hormone OptimizationSeth is launching a telehealth platform and expanding into peptide and hormone replacement therapy, with a focus on improving healthspan, not just lifespan.Leadership and Personal Reflections:• From Door to Door Sales to Industry BuilderSeth began selling meat door to door at 19. That early exposure to rejection and persuasion shaped his entrepreneurial edge. He believes sales is the foundation of solving higher ticket problems.• Mentorship MattersLooking back, Seth wishes he had sought mentors earlier. Today he invests heavily in mentoring younger professionals so they can avoid common mistakes and compress their learning curve.• Fulfillment Over MoneyHe shared a shift from chasing income to pursuing impact, especially as a father. Success for him now is measured by patient outcomes, provider growth, and the liveSend a textConnect with Kip on LinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/kipknippel/Watch Bite-Sized Clips on YouTubehttps://www.youtube.com/@capitalistculture/shorts

Dr. Howard Federoff, Scientific Co-Founder, Chief Medical Officer, and Executive Vice President of Corporate Medicine and Science at Kenai Therapeutics, is developing a cell therapy for Parkinson's disease that involves transplanting IPSCs into the brain to replace lost dopamine neurons.  The goal is not to cure the underlying cause of the disease, but to restore motor function and reverse the disease's progression. Initial clinical focus was on patients with moderate to moderate-severe idiopathic Parkinson's, showing efficacy and safety, leading to expanding the study to include earlier-stage and familial forms of the disease. Howard explains, "Kenai was formed about three and a half years ago, and the intention is to develop a cellular product, which means that what is manufactured will be eligible in the right patient groups who have a diagnosis of Parkinson's to be placed into the brain. And consequent to its placement, the cells will then form new circuits, dopamine circuits that are lost owing to the disease diagnosis that will have occurred years earlier." "The induced pluripotent stem cell approach is one we favor for several reasons. The nature of what then becomes the IPSC, as we like to call it, starts with a normal human volunteer whose medical history is very detailed and does not contain any familial personal history of neurodegeneration. That cell then undergoes a process called reprogramming. And in our case, it's done with a slightly different approach than many others. And the reprogramming effectively creates a cell that is pluripotent, meaning it can become any cell of the body. That's when it is designated as an induced pluripotent stem cell."  #KenaiTherapeutics #ParkinsonsDisease #CellTherapy #StemCells #Neuroscience #MedicalInnovation #ClinicalTrials #RegenerativeMedicine #Biotechnology #BioTech #AdvancedBiologics #NeurologicalDisorders #Neurology #DrugDevelopment KenaiTx.com Download the transcript here

Good morning from Pharma Daily: the podcast that brings you the most important developments in the pharmaceutical and biotech world. Today, we delve into the significant events of 2025, a year marked by pivotal scientific breakthroughs, regulatory changes, and industry trends that have reshaped drug development and patient care. One of the standout advancements was Novo Nordisk gaining FDA approval for an oral version of Wegovy, a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist for obesity management. This marks a notable shift in treatment accessibility, as it provides an easier alternative to injectables for those managing weight and cardiovascular risks. This development could significantly enhance patient adherence and broaden access to this critical therapy. However, not all news was positive. Pfizer faced a challenging situation when a patient death occurred in the extension of their Hympavzi hemophilia study. Such incidents highlight the intrinsic risks of clinical trials, especially within gene therapy realms where safety monitoring is paramount. These events remind us of the delicate balance between innovation and patient safety in advanced biologic therapies. In legal news, Johnson & Johnson was ordered by a Baltimore jury to pay $1.56 billion in a talc-related cancer case. This ruling underscores heightened scrutiny on product safety and consumer protection within the pharmaceutical industry, potentially influencing future litigation and regulatory measures.Clinical trial outcomes also presented mixed results. Neurocrine Biosciences' Ingrezza did not meet efficacy endpoints in its phase 3 trial for cerebral palsy-related dyskinesia. Although it is approved for other movement disorders, this setback reflects the complexities involved in expanding drug indications. Such challenges highlight ongoing hurdles in translating preclinical successes into clinical realities.Despite geopolitical tensions, particularly between China and the U.S., Chinese biotech firms thrived, maintaining robust deal activity. China's continued growth as an innovation hub is driven by strategic investments and collaborations that bolster global drug development efforts, underscoring its increasing influence in life sciences.Regulatory landscapes also shifted with proposals from the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation to align U.S. drug prices with international rates under Medicare Parts B and D. These proposed models could significantly impact pricing strategies and market dynamics within the U.S., requiring pharmaceutical companies to adapt while ensuring equitable access to medications.Ethical challenges surfaced as six individuals were charged with insider trading involving biotech stocks. Such incidents highlight the necessity for stringent ethical standards and regulatory oversight to maintain investor confidence and market integrity.Meanwhile, AstraZeneca's extended partnership with Niowave for actinium-225 supply reflects an interest in radiopharmaceuticals as targeted cancer therapies. This collaboration highlights the potential of radiopharmaceuticals in oncology, opening promising avenues for precision medicine approaches. As 2025 closes, it's clear that this year has been one of both triumphs and trials for the pharmaceutical and biotech industries. Scientific innovations like Novo Nordisk's oral GLP-1 receptor agonist offer new hope for patients, yet challenges such as clinical trial setbacks and legal battles indicate ongoing hurdles in drug development and commercialization. These developments will likely influence industry strategies and regulatory policies as we advance into 2026.The sustained momentum of China's biotech industry amid global trade tensions remains notable. This trend reflects China's strategic investments in biotech capabilities and its growing role in global markets despite geopolitical frictions. In clinical research, Hope BioscienceSupport the show

And they're not just encouraging but very inspiring. As the founder of the American Academy of Integrative Cell Therapy, I've spent years digging into peer-reviewed research and applying it in real clinical settings. In this talk, I walk through compelling studies that show how mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are being used to treat autoimmune diseases, neurological disorders, cardiovascular conditions, and even things like erectile dysfunction and autism.I look at the regenerative power of MSCs, how they travel where they're needed, and the wide-ranging ways they modulate inflammation, restore function, and enhance healing.Stem cell research is moving fast, and we're witnessing the early days of a major shift in modern medicine.

He recently completed Phase 1 of its clinical trial, a first-in-human approach that delivers a patient's own fat-derived stem cells directly into the brain's ventricles to target neurodegenerative diseases. In this interview with Being Patient's Mark Niu, Duma discusses how the trial is progressing. He explains the approach, shares Phase 1 safety results with encouraging early signals in biomarkers and cognition, and outlines a Phase 2 trial that will test effectiveness in a larger group of participants with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. Phase 2 of the study calls for injections every two months with regular scans and laboratory tests, aiming to show whether this therapy could expand care options for people living with neurodegenerative disease.—-If you loved listening to this Live Talk, visit our website to find more of our Alzheimer's coverage and subscribe to our newsletter: https://www.beingpatient.com/Follow Being Patient: Twitter: https://twitter.com/Being_Patient_Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/beingpatientvoices/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/beingpatientalzheimersLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/being-patientBeing Patient is an editorially independent journalism outlet for news and reporting about brain health, cognitive science, and neurodegenerative diseases. What Stem Cell Therapy Taught Me About Recovery, Mindset, and Reinventing Downtime

In today's episode, I share my personal experience with stem cell therapy—and the unexpected lessons that came from being forced to slow down. Whether you're choosing a procedure like stem cell therapy or suddenly dealing with an injury or illness, time off from your normal routine isn't just inconvenient — it's a major mental and physical shift. But it doesn't have to be a setback.  In this episode, I unpack the power of reframing your downtime with three key focus areas: Mindset,  Movement, and  Meaningful redirection.   Why I opted for Stem Cell Therapy Knee inflammation.  As a medical exercise specialist and a strength & conditioning coach, if we have a knee issue, the first places to look are the hip mobility, glute strength and hamstring strength. I chose to do a stem cell therapy NOW before the degeneration of the tissues got worse. Nothing you do with soft tissue will help your hard tissue or bone structure regenerate. If there's an opportunity to regenerate, it occurs when you're healthiest, not when more damage is done.   MINDSET Detaching identity from physically active and physically capable Dealing with “rest guilt” “You will regret doing too much. You won't regret doing less.” Flipping frustration into self-awareness What I did: travel to a baby shower  Accept the pace change without resentment.   MOVEMENT Moving smarter not harder. Do what I am able to do (core activation) and how I modified it with no pressure on the knees (e.g. stretching, swimming with a pool buoy, etc). “Some” movement matters more than “perfect” movement. It's better to be undertrained than overtrained.   MEANINGFUL REDIRECTION (or Focus Shift) Using the extra time for non-physical growth (sleep, reading a book, collecting recipes, etc.) Business planning, learning, and creative projects. The power of journaling during healing. Making your mandatory time off count long-term.   The Power of Pause - The Lesson Learned from My Stem Cell Therapy   Other Episodes You Might Like: Previous Episode - Bladder Issues in Menopause - The Hidden Bacteria You Need to Know Next Episode - Essential Oils for Menopause Hormones | Essential How-to for Essential Oils More Like This - Better Strength and Metabolism in Midlife Through More Rest and Recovery   Resources:  Get your lean, clean Flipping 50 Protein Powders to maintain muscle and support metabolism.
