Discussing Ben's interview with Substrate CEO James Proud, including the "insane" challenge he's undertaken as Substrate attempts to compete with TSMC and ASML, and the ways in which a bubbly environment benefits innovation by incentivizing exactly that sort of moonshot. From there: Ben's thoughts on the "Too Big to Fail" era in tech that may be averted, reactions to the latest humanoid robot, and thoughts on both sides of the OpenAI-MIcrosoft announcement earlier this week. At the end: Taylor Sheridan leaves Paramount for greener pastures, Sharp Text and lessons from Grantland, a temperature check on Sora one month later, lessons from the Nexperia mess in Europe, a question about Magic: The Gathering, and a few corrections to last week's show.
See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Are you interested in new forms of governance? Summary of the whitepaper titled Liberland Blockchain Whitepaper, published on the Liberland website. This is a great preparation to our next interview with Vít Jedlička, the president of Liberland in episode 370 talking about their new governance structure based on blockchain. Since we are investigating the future of cities, I thought it would be interesting to see how we can utilise the upcoming technologies, like blockchain to improve our governance systems. This whitepaper presents how Liberland operates its government entirely on a public blockchain which aims to ensure transparency and accountability, balancing decentralisation with necessary permissioned access for citizens.Find the white paper through this link.Abstract: Liberland is a country founded in 2015 on a terra nullius between Croatia and Serbia, with its founders being enthusiasts of blockchain and liberty. The goal of the Liberland Blockchain is to provide all e-government services to its citizens via a Substrate-based blockchain system, with governance as its first use case. The Liberland Blockchain is designed as a layer 1 public blockchain, governed by the holders of its native tokens, the Liberland Dollar (LLD) and Liberland Merit (LLM). The system also supports Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) representing land and other assets and implements a decentralised identity solution. In the future, it will support an online judiciary system, enabling non-smart but self-executing contracts on the blockchain with the judiciary as an oracle. The judiciary will also enable features like account recovery and recourse against fraud and theft.Connecting episodes you might be interested in:No.022R - Crypto citiesNo.180 - Interview with Ben Vass about new technologies, like blockchain, influencing the future of citiesYou can find the transcript through this link. What was the most interesting part for you? What if 99% of the universe holds the key to understanding UFOs, paranormal phenomena, and even consciousness itself? In this episode, Kelly Chase and Jay Christopher King dive deep into the plasma hypothesis—a paradigm-shifting idea that plasma, the fourth state of matter, may act as a substrate for intelligence. Fresh from the University of Exeter workshop on plasma cosmology (with thinkers like Robert Temple, Jeffrey Kripal, Bernard Carr, and Nick Cook), Kelly unpacks the conversations that are reshaping the frontier of science and anomalous studies. Together, Kelly and Jay explore: What plasma actually is and why it makes up nearly all of the visible universe. Robert Temple's groundbreaking book A New Science of Heaven and its implications for UFOs and consciousness studies. Why orb encounters and plasma-like phenomena may be central to the experiencer narrative. The limits of materialist explanations—and why plasma may not explain everything. How process philosophy and transpersonal psychology open new frameworks for exploring intelligent plasma. The overlap between orbs, UFOs, cryptids, and the land of the dead. The risks of overreach and the need to resist turning plasma into the next “quantum” catch-all. From the cutting edge of astrophysics to the lived realities of experiencers, this conversation wrestles with the biggest question of all: could plasma be the hidden medium of mind, matter, and mystery? ✨ Join the conversation and go deeper: Cosmosis Community on Patreon – ad-free episodes, monthly calls, private Discord, and more: CosmosisCommunity.com Cosmosis: UFOs & A New Reality – now streaming on Amazon, Apple TV, and multiple platforms: Cosmosis.MediaMusic for Cosmosis is by Michael Rubino. I have known this weeks guest in one form or another for a very long time. As a raver in a club watching him play, to a friend of a friend, and now in the present, we talk pretty often. I can assure you, he is just as much fun as his cover photo implies. He's been on flyers playing DNB in the DC metro area for decades now. He's part of the fabric of our little east coast DNB community. Excited to share this one especially. Representing Fredericksburg Virginia, please welcome SubStrate. To enable future lunar settlements, researchers are pursuing ways to construct needed devices on the moon to save the expense of shipping them from Earth. In this podcast episode, MRS Bulletin's Laura Leay interviews Felix Lang from the University of Potsdam, Germany about his group's development of perovskite solar cells that utilize the moon's regolith for the substrate. The researchers achieved power conversion efficiency of ~10%, with some device architectures leading to improved efficiencies of ~12%. Calculations show that using resources from the moon resulted in a power-to-weight ratio that outclassed other technologies, even with the low efficiency. Future work will look to improve this efficiency by considering tandem solar cells. This study was published in a recent issue of Device.

MAXIMIZING PLANT POTENTIAL: SUBSTRATE INNOVATION EXPLAINED FROM THE WINTER 2024 ISSUE OF INSIDE GROWER MAGAZINE WRITTEN BY JOSE CHEN LOPEZ NARRATED BY BILL CALKINS EXCERPT: Choosing the right substrate for a particular application can be a challenge. Choosing the right beneficial microorganisms for a specific plant, mode of action and ensuring compatibility with other beneficial microorganisms can be excruciating. When choosing and adding beneficial microorganisms to the substrate, growers must ensure that they're viable, that the carrier is compatible, that the application rate is uniform and homogenous within the whole volume of the substrate, and that they're from a reputable company. Ep. 26: There's a reason we use certain brand names when referring to certain products. Think Kleenex for tissues or Band-Aid for adhesive bandages. It's because these brands set the quality standard and are now forever tied with those objects. The downside however is that sometimes inferior products ride that brand power.Well, Sintra, Foam-Core, Gatorfoam, Dibond, and now Smart-X from 3A Composites are the industry standard. Accept no substitutes. Erika Smythe of 3A Composites stops by to talk about the making of and why you should be using quality substrates.Victor from Wraps For Less on Instagram: @wrapsforlessThe Slightly Serious Sign Podcast is now the #1 Most Fact Checked Podcast in the United States.Voted #1 by Signman (standing on a van on top of 18 pallets changing a lightbulb over a movie theater sign)https://www.wensco.com/company/slightly-serious-sign-podcast616.785.3333The views, thoughts, and opinions expressed are the speaker's own and do not represent the views, thoughts, and opinions of Wensco Sign Supply. Morgan Palmer of Tierra Turtles discusses multiple topics that are of importance to him and his family, as well as relatable to myself. He talks about his fascination with turtles from the beginning to now, where he has built extravagant outdoor enclosures for his over twenty species of turtle. He emphasizes the need for turtles to have access to fresh air and sunshine, highlighting that it had completely changed his turtle's behavior for the better. Morgan also discusses the need for a social media detox for many like himself, as the platforms that we find ourselves on for hours of the day can be detrimental to our mental health. He gives advice on what he has done to improve his relationship with social media, as well as using that to make more time for the more important aspects of life. Morgan also discusses the relationship that he strives to form with his daughter and the animals around her; highlighting that when kids learn early on how to treat animals, they will continue to do so throughout life.
