MAXIMIZING PLANT POTENTIAL: SUBSTRATE INNOVATION EXPLAINED FROM THE WINTER 2024 ISSUE OF INSIDE GROWER MAGAZINE WRITTEN BY JOSE CHEN LOPEZ NARRATED BY BILL CALKINS EXCERPT: Choosing the right substrate for a particular application can be a challenge. Choosing the right beneficial microorganisms for a specific plant, mode of action and ensuring compatibility with other beneficial microorganisms can be excruciating. When choosing and adding beneficial microorganisms to the substrate, growers must ensure that they're viable, that the carrier is compatible, that the application rate is uniform and homogenous within the whole volume of the substrate, and that they're from a reputable company. This was a fun podcast for me because I think there's a lot of misinformation around this topic and it was great to hear from an expert! Sphagnum Peat Moss is the gold standard for the horticulture industry. In N. America we use the majority of our peat for growing plants. Are there better options? What's the current research tell us about the sustainability of peat moss? In this episode we talk about why peat moss is such a popular choice for media as well as the pros and cons of the current substrates on the market.

Also, irgendwie doch ganz cool.
This episode, "How My Projects Fit Together," is a follow-up to a previous post called "What I Am Doing & How It's Going". Here, Daniel Miessler addresses the most commonly asked questions: "I see all your projects, but what are they? How are they related?" He takes an individual look at his various projects (Substrate, Fabric, Telos, Daemon, and Human 3.0) and then how they work together to tackle big issues such as the lack of purpose and meaning in people's lives, preparing people for the impact of AI in society, and the need for holistic human development. Ep. 26: There's a reason we use certain brand names when referring to certain products. Think Kleenex for tissues or Band-Aid for adhesive bandages. It's because these brands set the quality standard and are now forever tied with those objects. The downside however is that sometimes inferior products ride that brand power.Well, Sintra, Foam-Core, Gatorfoam, Dibond, and now Smart-X from 3A Composites are the industry standard. Accept no substitutes. He talks about his fascination with turtles from the beginning to now, where he has built extravagant outdoor enclosures for his over twenty species of turtle. He emphasizes the need for turtles to have access to fresh air and sunshine, highlighting that it had completely changed his turtle's behavior for the better. Morgan also discusses the need for a social media detox for many like himself, as the platforms that we find ourselves on for hours of the day can be detrimental to our mental health. He gives advice on what he has done to improve his relationship with social media, as well as using that to make more time for the more important aspects of life. Morgan also discusses the relationship that he strives to form with his daughter and the animals around her; highlighting that when kids learn early on how to treat animals, they will continue to do so throughout life. Welcome back to the NPC Smooth Finish podcast, where we dive into the pool of knowledge and fish out the pearls of wisdom! Today, we're tackling Technical Bulletin #8, which isn't just a number—it's a lifeline for those braving the elements to create the perfect pool finish. Plastic Shrinkage: It's not your average shrinkage; it's the villain of plaster, lurking in the shadows of the first few hours' post-application. This dastardly phenomenon occurs when plaster loses water faster than a camel on a treadmill. To combat this, water must multitask like a circus juggler, balancing the Wick effect, curing chemistry, and the mood swings of ambient conditions. Now, let's talk about the Fab Five Factors that can turn your pool project into a dramatic reality show: Ambient Air Temperature: It's not just hot air; it's a potential project melter! Substrate's Thirst Level: How quickly does it gulp down that moisture? Material Temperature: Is your plaster chill, or is it having a hot flash? Humidity: The invisible pool party guest that can really dampen your spirits. Wind Speed: The ultimate diva, blowing away your hard work with a gusty attitude. Mix any of these factors, and you've got a recipe for a pool party disaster. But fear not, for every complication, we've got a comedic countermeasure: Decreased Set Time: It's a race against the clock, so move faster than a teenager asked to do chores! Increased Drying Rate: Plaster's drying out faster than jokes at a bad comedy show. Water Demand Spike: Your plaster is thirstier than a marathon runner in the desert. Cold Joints: Not the hip kind, but the kind that makes your pool finish frown. Discoloration: Like a bad tie-dye job, but on your pool. Our trusty nomographs are like the weather forecast for evaporation—just with less chance of getting it wrong. And remember, when it comes to Plastic Shrinkage, wind is the big bad wolf trying to blow your house down. So, how do we outsmart Mother Nature? Here's our weatherproof plan: SSD (Surface Saturation Dry): Keep it as dry as a comedian's wit. Control Hydration: Like a bartender for your plaster, mixing the perfect cocktail. Maintain Equipment: Treat it better than your car; it's what gets you to the finish line. Increase Labor: More hands make lighter work and better punchlines. Weather Timing: Be the early bird or the cool cat in the shade. Reflective Gear: Shine bright like a diamond, or at least like a well-placed tarp. Tent It Up: Because every good project deserves its own circus tent. Chill with Materials: Literally. Use chilled water and slow-setting cement. Admixes & Pozzolans: They're like the secret sauce to a gourmet meal. Water Reducers: Because sometimes less is more. And there you have it, folks! With these tips, you'll be the pool whisperer, taming the wild elements with a splash of humor. Until next time, keep your plaster happy and your pools smoother than a dolphin's dive! Remember, always refer to the manufacturer's recommendations and the nomographs for the best results. Happy plastering! Glass has long been explored as an alternative substrate material to organic laminates and silicon. As high-performance computing and chiplets HPC push the boundaries of existing technology, they are demanding innovative packaging solutions, beginning with innovative substrate materials. This is paving the way for glass. In this episode, Françoise von Trapp and Richard Noack discuss the highlights and takeaways from the recent webinar, Evolving HPC and Chiplet Packaging with Glass, and dive deeper into the motivation and trends that are bringing glass to the forefront. They talk about the need for collaboration across the glass ecosystem and issue a call to action for downstream metrology companies to collaborate on developing solutions for measuring through transparent materials. He is known for his provocative and insightful takes on color management and has been a vocal advocate for better standards in the industry.Summary:In this episode of the People of Packaging podcast, host Adam Peek interviews Eddie Hagen, a printing industry provocateur and color management expert. They discuss the importance of color in printed packaging and the need for better standards in color management. Eddie shares his insights on why some press checks and color approvals have become overly complicated and how this can be addressed. He also challenges the notion that brand colors need to be within a tight tolerance and emphasizes the importance of broadening the delta e tolerances. Eddie introduces Project BCG (Better Brand Color Guides), which promotes the use of rock-solid brand color definitions and the creation of custom color specifications. He also highlights the influence of substrates on color perception and the limitations of physical press checks. The episode concludes with a discussion on the advantages of digital printing in color control and the need for standardized color measurements.Key Takeaways:* Color increases brand recognition by up to 80% in certain cases.* There is no proof that brand colors need to be within a tight delta e tolerance.* Broadening delta e tolerances in color management can reduce waste and improve sustainability.* Rock-solid brand color definitions and custom color specifications are essential for accurate color reproduction.* Substrates and lighting conditions can significantly influence color perception.* Digital printing offers a verified feedback loop for color control.Quotes:* "Color increases brand recognition by 80%." - Eddie Hagen* "We need to broaden the delta e tolerances because it doesn't make any sense to be this critical." - Eddie Hagen* "Measure the color that you picked and use that as your primary color definition." - Eddie Hagen* "There is no secret about Coca Cola red. You can easily measure it." - Eddie Hagen* "Use ISO standards on colors. Don't be a nerd that wants to be better than the standards." - Eddie Hagen This is a public episode.
