In this episode of Zen and the Art of Real Estate Investing, Jonathan is joined by Gary Lipsky, founder of Break of Day Capital, to explore what it takes to succeed in multifamily real estate syndication. Gary shares how he went from buying his first fixer-upper in Los Angeles to managing over 3,200 apartment units across Arizona. With an emphasis on transparency, due diligence, and investor education, Gary discusses how his firm evaluates markets, selects value-add properties, and builds long-term relationships with investors. They dive deep into the differences between Class A and B assets, what makes a market like Tucson attractive for syndicators, and how Gary's entrepreneurial background helped him scale while staying focused. The conversation also covers how passive investors should evaluate operators, what strong communication looks like, and why a conservative, consistent approach beats chasing the highest returns. In this episode, you will hear: What drew Gary to the Tucson market, and how he evaluates its long-term potential Key indicators he looks for when assessing Class B value-add properties Traits of trustworthy syndicators and how passive investors can vet them effectively The role of conservative underwriting in building a sustainable investment strategy How consistent execution and strong communication help operators earn investor confidence Ways to educate potential investors without overselling or overpromising Follow and Review: We'd love for you to follow us if you haven't yet. Caleb Brewer - (Ret.) Army Green Beret, Bow Hunter, Founder of Stick Sniper Archery. Caleb is a lifelong Tucson native. He found his calling in 2005 when he joined the US Army. For 11 years, Caleb served in the military and earned the right to wear the Green Beret as a Special Forces soldier. In 2015, his life changed when he was critically injured by an IED, resulting in the loss of both legs while conducting combat operations in Afghanistan. Throughout recovery, Caleb learned that being outdoors was just as therapeutic as any other method. He trained hard in the gym so that he could function out in nature. Caleb's passion for archery began in 2017. He quickly progressed to working on his own bow, building a near full-service shop in his garage, and bowhunting closely followed as part of the progression. In 2020, Caleb created the program for and became the Archery Program Manager for 501c3 Operation Enduring Warrior, in 2021 a nonprofit foundation that supports veterans and first responders. Caleb realized the massively therapeutic benefit archery had on those struggling with internal and external injuries. Now Caleb's goal is to grow the sport of archery within his hometown of Tucson through Stick Sniper Archery. Tune in as Bobby Marshall sits down with Caleb Brewer at Stick Sniper Archery in Tucson, AZ to discuss archery, bow hunting, recovery, mindset, outdoor therapy, Fread Bear, music, business, wildlife, family, outdoor Life & much more. Isaac walks the same ground as Abraham, facing famine, fear, and foreign rulers. God confirms the promise given to Abraham, yet Isaac repeats old sins by misleading others about his wife. Still, the Lord blesses him abundantly. Tensions rise with Abimelech, but a treaty and an altar bring resolution. This chapter reminds us that God's faithfulness is greater than our failures, and that peace and worship often go hand in hand. The Rev. Bruce von Hindenburg, pastor of Catalina Lutheran Church in Tucson, AZ, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Genesis 26. To learn more about Catalina Lutheran, visit www.catalinalutheran.org. Genesis isn't just the start of the Bible; it's the foundation of everything. Creation, sin, judgment, grace, covenant, and promise all take root in this remarkable book. The stories are ancient, but their truths are eternal. In this new series from Thy Strong Word, Pastor Phil Booe and his guests walk verse by verse through Genesis, exploring how God reveals Himself as Creator, Judge, and Redeemer. From the grandeur of the cosmos to the struggles of ordinary families, Genesis introduces us to a God who speaks, acts, and keeps His promises. So, whether you've read it a hundred times or are just now cracking it open for a serious look, this series will help you see Genesis with fresh eyes—and a deeper faith. Thy Strong Word, hosted by Rev. Dr. Phil Booe, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church of Luverne, MN, reveals the light of our salvation in Christ through study of God's Word, breaking our darkness with His redeeming light. Each weekday, two pastors fix our eyes on Jesus by considering Holy Scripture, verse by verse, in order to be strengthened in the Word and be equipped to faithfully serve in our daily vocations. On this episode of The Debrief we are going to be looking at Post Traumatic Stress and Post Traumatic Growth. These are two topics that I am extremely passionate about because, as you might imagine, each incident we cover on The Debrief has had a profound effect on everyone involved. Over the years that I have been working with teams and the years I have hosted this show I have seen people destroyed by their experiences. Yet I have also seen others use the trauma they endured to build a stronger, happier and more purposeful version of themselves. Although I have certainly seen patterns, I have always wondered what separated these two groups of people, which is why I wanted to have this discussion on Post Traumatic Growth. Simply put there is a LOT we can do to prepare for and respond to traumatic incidents that will reduce the fallout to those involved. All of my guests today have a different perspective on Post traumatic growth. Dr. Richard Tedeschi is the world's foremost authority on Post Traumatic Growth and literally coined the expression. His work forms the foundation for most PTG programs. Josh Goldberg is the CEO of Boulder Crest Foundation, a nonprofit whose Warrior Path and Struggle Well programs have reached over 100,000 people. And Finally Chief Chad Kasmar is the current Chief of Police in Tucson Arizona. Following the suicide of a friend and former fellow officer Chad has led a revolution in the way his city prepares and supports their staff for traumatic incidents. He has a truly unique perspective on the implementation of these types of programs.I hope you enjoy this deep dive into Post Traumatic Growth and that this episode inspires you and your agencies to improve on the way we prepare and treat our warriors and first responders. Part 15 of The Journey Beyond Death takes us deeper into our exploration of near-death experiences, marking part five of our eight-part NDE-focused series. In this episode, we hear the raw, profound accounts of Amanda Wideman and Bill Tortorella—two individuals who crossed the threshold between life and death and returned with extraordinary insights. Amanda recounts the harrowing moment her car spun out on a mountain road in British Columbia. Instead of succumbing to fear, she surrendered, launching into an out-of-body experience where she was immersed in a realm of pure peace, unconditional love, and spiritual familiarity. Her testimony offers powerful reflections on the true nature of our soul and the deep sense of belonging that transcends earthly existence. Bill Tortorella shares his vivid journey after a sudden illness claimed his physical life during a trade show. Traveling through a tunnel of radiant colors, Bill encountered guardian spirits, a profound life review, and overwhelming sensations of love and unity. His story sheds light on the importance of our choices, the weight of our actions, and the soul's yearning for growth and service. Together, Amanda and Bill's experiences offer a glimpse into the infinite love, wisdom, and transformational lessons that await beyond the veil. This episode invites listeners to reconsider the purpose of their existence and the enduring nature of consciousness beyond the human form. ----------------------------- Featuring in order of appearance 01:00 - NDE Survivor - Amanda Wideman 23:24 - NDE Survivor - Bill Tortorella ----------------------------- About Amanda Wideman Amanda Wideman is a Canadian trauma-informed coach, artist, and former paramedic whose life was profoundly transformed by a near-death experience (NDE) in 2017. While returning from a music festival in British Columbia, her vehicle was involved in a severe accident, flipping and landing upside down on a concrete guardrail. In that moment, Amanda surrendered to what she believed was the end, only to encounter a profound sense of peace and a loving, timeless presence she describes as "home".This pivotal experience led Amanda to reevaluate her life's direction. She left her 13-year career as a paramedic, sold her home, and embarked on a journey of spiritual and personal exploration. Embracing practices such as plant medicine ceremonies, meditation, and fasting, she sought deeper understanding and connection. Today, Amanda channels her insights into her work as a trauma-informed coach and shares her story to inspire others. She authored the book Surrender: How a Near Death Experience Changed My Perception of Life, detailing her transformative journey. Through her coaching, artistic endeavors, and public speaking, Amanda Wideman continues to guide others toward healing and self-discovery, drawing from the profound lessons of her near-death experience. Website: -------------------------- About Bill Tortorella Bill Tortorella is an author, artist, and former paramedic whose life was transformed by a profound near-death experience (NDE) in 1994. While working at a trade show in Tucson, Arizona, he contracted a severe illness that led to his NDE. During this experience, he encountered three guardian angels who imparted to him nine principles of enlightenment—messages centered on love, unity, and spiritual awakening. Prior to this life-altering event, Tortorella had a diverse career. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, he graduated from the School of Art and Design in Manhattan and worked as a commercial artist. He later became a paramedic in Miami during the turbulent 1970s, a period marked by the rise of the "Cocaine Cowboys."Following his NDE, Tortorella authored The Ninth Level of Enlightenment: The Wisdom of the Light and Choices: Messages of Love to Change the Outcome, aiming to share the insights he received and inspire others toward personal and collective transformation. Through his writings and public engagements, Bill Tortorella continues to promote messages of compassion, forgiveness, and service, encouraging individuals to embrace spiritual growth and contribute positively to the world.
