In this episode of Americana Podcast: The 51st State, host Robert Earl Keen sits down with one of the most quietly influential voices in American songwriting: James McMurtry. For decades, McMurtry has carved out a singular space where songs are more than melodies. His writing is built on gritty character studies, moral landscapes, and moments of hard-won clarity—stories that feel lived in, observed, and unafraid to sit with complexity. From the early days of his debut album Too Long in the Wasteland to the lived-in wisdom of his most recent work, his catalog reads like a map of roads traveled and lives encountered along the way.Born in Fort Worth, Texas, McMurtry spent much of his youth in Northern Virginia before finding his footing as a songwriter in Tucson, Arizona, studying English and Spanish while cutting his teeth in small rooms and local venues. After time spent traveling—including a period living in Alaska—he returned to Texas, working odd jobs, playing bars and open mics, and gradually forging a life as a working songwriter. For much of his adult life, he's been based in Lockhart, just south of Austin, though his music has carried far beyond those borders. In this conversation, Robert and James reflect on the long arc of a songwriting life—from early guitar lessons and teenage gigs to his first record, Too Long in the Wasteland, and through to his latest album, The Black Dog and the Wandering Boy. Along the way, they talk about craft, observation, patience, and what it means to tell the truth in song without flinching. It's an intimate, thoughtful look at an artist whose work doesn't chase trends or spotlight—but endures, quietly and honestly, exactly where it belongs.Listen to the full episode on all streaming platforms or at AmericanaPodcast.com.Like, share, and subscribe to Americana Podcast. In September, Olivia Miller returned to Eugene to start her new position as the executive director of the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at the University of Oregon. She earned a master’s degree in art history from UO in 2009 and most recently served as the director of the University of Arizona’s Museum of Art in Tucson. Miller curated two exhibits at UA’s art museum that featured works selected from Schnitzer’s vast art collection, including “The Art of Food,” which traveled to Portland State University in 2022 and other locations around the nation. Miller joins us to share her experience so far leading the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at UO, as well as her priorities and future plans for it, which may include offering a class on art theft. It’s a subject Miller has some experience with after successfully leading the return and restoration of a painting by abstract artist Willem de Kooning that was stolen from University of Arizona’s art museum four decades ago.

Send us a textIn the mid-1850s, America was expanding westward — fast, hungry, and ruthless. The ink was barely dry on the Gadsden Purchase when settlers began pouring into the unforgiving deserts of what would one day become southern Arizona. The land was harsh, lawless, and already inhabited by Native nations like the Apache, who fiercely resisted encroachment. This episode begins in that volatile moment — where empires shifted, cultures clashed, and ordinary people stepped into extraordinary danger. At the heart of this story is Larcena Pennington Page, a young woman who journeyed west with her family in search of a new life. What happened to her in the mountains outside Tucson — kidnapped by Apache warriors and left for dead in the wilderness — became one of the most remarkable survival stories in Arizona's early history. But before we get to that, we explore the world she lived in: a borderland shaped by conflict, hope, and unimaginable hardship. This is more than a tale of survival. It's about the collision of nations, the resilience of a frontier family, and the woman who walked back from the edge of death.Support the show

Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!Want a real blueprint for going from overwhelmed rookie to confident, independent trainer? Wendy joins us with a candid look at what actually moved the needle: interning in a PT clinic, shadowing great coaches, training as a client to learn the buyer's side, and choosing education that works in the real world. Her path across small-town Arizona gyms and a high-volume facility selling five-year packages reveals how marketing, culture, and leadership shape a trainer's growth, pay, and staying power. We get specific about money and momentum. Wendy breaks down the grind of long days and 20 percent take-home pay, the decision to set her own rates, and how paid assessments filter price shoppers while signaling value. We share practical scripts for “it depends” pricing, when to state a range, and how to frame an assessment so clients feel invested from day one. If you're stuck between charging more and losing leads, this conversation gives you tools to nudge rates up with confidence and clarity.Education becomes a competitive edge when it's hands-on. We dig into seminars, Show Up Fitness programming, and why anatomy mastery silences imposter syndrome in elite rooms. Wendy talks about building systems—Stripe, clean paperwork, and consistent discovery calls—to keep a solo business sane. We also cover choosing the right independent gym: seek sharp peers, growth mindsets, and rooms where you're proud to introduce your mom to most coaches. The takeaway is simple: stack real reps, join strong communities, and let outcomes justify your price. If this helped you rethink your next move, follow the show, share it with a trainer who needs a push, and leave a review so more coaches can find it.Want to become a SUCCESSFUL personal trainer? You'll hear street-level fixes that change daily life—and travel anywhere—plus a clear playbook cities can steal now: run the hottest months smarter, put shade where people actually stand and walk, and build the partnerships that keep projects alive. Episode #143 Goal Shaping and Tucson Camp! Tucson Camp Preparation Camp is about setting up the season, learning, and peer training in a stress-free environment, rather than being in race shape. The required fitness includes swimming at least 2K, completing 2-hour trainer rides or 3-4 hours of outdoor riding, and jogging 30 minutes for running. Jesse emphasized the importance of having a positive attitude towards the training challenges at camp, noting that campers don't need to already be at the required fitness levels before attending. Jesse and Marilyn explained that campers can have varying levels of group riding experience, with coaches providing guidance for both beginners and experienced riders. They emphasized the social aspects of camp, including opportunities to meet and learn from other athletes. Goal Setting in Triathlon Jesse and Marilyn discussed the importance of goal setting in triathlon, emphasizing the need to align personal goals with realistic logistical and physical capabilities. They highlighted the importance of honest self-assessment, including evaluating current fitness levels, life commitments, and the resources required to achieve specific goals. Jesse shared a personal example of adjusting goals for an ultra-running race to focus on finishing rather than winning, given time and energy constraints. Marilyn recommended using a structured debriefing tool to help athletes plan their seasons effectively and suggested consulting with coaches or trusted individuals to gain an external perspective on goal feasibility. Tucson Camp ! Marilyn's Planning framework

Main fiction: "Stars in a Grave, Stars in a Skull"Jeremy Szal was born in 1995 and was raised by wild dingoes, which should explain a lot. He writes epic fantasy and dark space opera of a character-driven, morally grey nature. His main series is the Common trilogy from Gollancz/Hachette, which includes Stormblood, Blindspace, and Woflskin, about a drug harvested from alien DNA that makes users permanently addicted to adrenaline and aggression. He's the author of over fifty short stories, translated into fifteen languages, many of which appear in his short fiction collection Broken Stars. He was the editor for the Hugo-winning StarShipSofa until 2020 and has a BA in Film Studies and Creative Writing from UNSW. He carves out a living in Sydney, Australia with his family, where he loves watching weird movies, eating Japanese food, exploring cities, learning languages, cold weather and dark humour. Do you feel PEACE during the "Holiday Season"? It is not always easy (as in It Ain't Easy), with all the hustle and bustle (yeah, we stole that too) it may be IMPOSSIBLE to experience the peace of the season. Family, friends, baking, gifting, cleaning; it can all become too much. In part 2 of our special 4 part series, Eric and Donna continue to related the candles of the Christmas Advent Wreath to buyer and seller expectations in Real Estate. Eric will share some addtional perspectives on his Holiday appearances as, Santa, Kris Kringle, The man with the Bag, Jolly old Saint Nick, Father Christmas and more. Please, join us for the simple exploration. Donna Reed and Eric Seemann are both professional real estate agents. Donna lives and works in Tucson Arizona with Keller Williams Southern Arizona while Eric lives and works in San Antonio Texas with Keller Williams Heritage. They are also siblings, and they grew up in a small Northwest Ohio village of Lindsey. Their idyllic small-town childhood laid the foundation for what would become the structure of their lives and careers in real estate. We hope you will join us as we reminisce, reflect, and correlate how our childhood and life in rural Ohio still impacts our dealings with our clients today. This Ask Josh Anything grab-bag starts with Tucson's new aluminum velodrome, evolves (devolves?) into altitude hacks for hour records, "no-rules" speed dreams, and holiday gift picks. From buying a kid's first bike (and why chain waxing might be the cleanest parenting win) to ESG-minded shop habits, Roubaix wheel diameter fever dreams to, aero brake-hose routing, and the Clik Valve debate—this episode covers the weird, practical, and wildly opinionated. Happy Holidays!
The "Holidays" can mean so much to so many people. Whether based on your personal beliefs, religious upbringing, or just the "Feelin' of the Season", it is IMPOSSIBLE to not have some emotions related to this time of year. For a special 4 part holiday series, Eric and Donna, relate the candles of the Christmas Advent Wreath to Real Estate and buyer and seller expectations. To the Season itself, and Eric shares some special perspectives based on his Holiday appearances and performances as Santa, Jolly old Saint Nick, Kris Kringle, Papa Noel, Father Christmas and more. As a reminder, Donna Reed and Eric Seemann are both professional real estate agents. Donna lives and works in Tucson Arizona with Keller Williams Southern Arizona while Eric lives and works in San Antonio Texas with Keller Williams Heritage. They are also siblings, and they grew up in a small Northwest Ohio village of Lindsey.
