Hey Friend, thank you for downloading the episode, my name is Arlina and Ill be your host. On April 23 I will be celebrating 31 years of continuous sobriety. Its always a time for reflection and as I look back, I want to share the top 3 things that have been key in maintaining my sobriety. The first is that I have made sobriety my number 1 priority. It comes before my husband, my job, and even my kids. I know that if I dont take care of my mental and emotional well being, that my sobriety could become vulnerable, and thats a risk Im just not willing to take. Theres an old saying that no matter how far down the road you go, youre still the same distance from the ditch. I am very clear that I cannot drink like a normal person, despite how long Ive been sober. Sobriety is the foundation of this life I love so much. Another component to my sobriety has been community. I have surrounded myself with other people who also have made sobriety their number 1 priority. Theres an idea called the contagion theory, that was developed by researchers at Harvard. It says we are the average of the 5 people we spend the most time with. We tend to adopt the beliefs and habits of the people we spend the most time with. And lastly, maybe most importantly is something I dont think I talk about enough, which is the role that spirituality plays in my life. Im pretty allergic to anything religious, so thats not what Im talking about. I mean no disrespect to religious people if that works for you. I just needed to come to an understanding of what it means to connect to a God of my understanding, which in short is universal law but also a power rooted in love. I have had spiritual experiences that were so profound, theres no other way to explain them. They actually happen so frequently in the recovery community we often refer to them as God Shots. They are like little reminders that we are not alone, and there is a greater power working in our loves. If you have had a spiritual experience that youd like to share, just leave a comment on the blog at odaatchat.com or you can DM me on Instagram at arlinaallen And as always, if you find yourself in need of support along your sobriety journey, please reach out to me to find out if sober coaching is right for you. Just visit soberlifeschool.com and book a no obligation call. Today I have a special guest, Andrea Seydel who is the author of Recovery Without Rock Bottom Reclaim Your life From Addictive Behavior. She is also the host of the super popular, Saving You Is Killing Me Podcast. Andrea shares how living with an addict led her to a very dark place of self-doubt, and shame that nearly cost her everything. I dont think we talk enough about how destructive addiction is for the family members, so today is an attempt to rectify that. And honestly, I dont think I know a single person in recovery who hasnt suffered from codependency to some degree so this will be a helpful episode for all involved. So without further delay, please enjoy this episode with Andrea. =J

Hey FitMama! I am here for you today with some real talk on habits and behaviors in our regular routine and looking at: What are they and how do they affect us (Shopping, drinking, gambling, coffee, procrastinating etc) Are they giving or taking from us? (Which one more?) Do they serve us? Maybe they did in the past but they no longer do. Take stock. When it comes to how we spend our time “working,” or “escaping,” or “self-care,” or “mom time,” or “wife time,” what are we doing that feels like we do it and we can't stop? It lifts us in some way but really goes against our goals? Online shopping? Scrolling? Quick fixes? Drama? Stress? Drinking or drugs when you know it's not healthy? It's giving us the dopamine hit we desire. Or lighting up that part of the brain. We try to stop and it feels hard or we give up and erode our self-trust. Is there a habit that is getting in your way? Take a life/time audit and track what you do all day to notice any patterns of addictive behaviors (don't hide from the subconscious ones that we do without thinking).  Notice (time audit) Stop Go for 30-100 days Feel. Do the work. Recovery awareness of self and CBT Reintroduce if desired and feels safe Record and remember Engage in life. Notice. Want to escape from your life? Noticing is both first and last. Are you living a life you want to escape from? This is something to be aware of. Otherwise these addictive behaviors can pop up out of the blue or have been there for years or even decades. No judgment! I hope this episode opens up some new perspective for you. Please send me a note! jen@fitmamaforever.com and Come find me on Instagram! Episode brought to you by Oura Ring. Today, I want to share some work done by Michael Easter author of the comfort crisis and the scarcity brain. He has created an incredible group called the 2%'er club which stemmed from a stat that said when given the option to take the stairs or an escalator… only 2% of people take the stairs. He has a multiple post per week newsletter that he does that I am subscribed to. He recently wrote about mental health and what he called the Smartphone Withdrawl Effect as well as how to quit a bad habit by slowing it down. In this episode going to share with you what I learned. Catch up quick on what's happening with social media regulation:The Kids Online Safety Act is a bill introduced in the US Senate. It aims to protect minors from the harms of social media. The bill has bipartisan support. It led to a rare Kumbaya moment with senators. Politicians who generally agree on nothing are … agreeing on something!Last Wednesday (1/31), Senators dragged the leaders of Meta/Facebook, X, TikTok, Discord, and Snap to DC and pressured them to take action. The Senators went HARD.Some of the bills highlights are. The bill would:Limit people's ability to communicate with minors. Limit the features that result in compulsive use of social media platforms.Limit minors from sharing their geolocation.Include options to easily delete apps or limit time on them.Give parents the ability to monitor kids' social media.Make overprotection on the apps the default setting.Force social media companies to release reports detailing immediate and foreseeable harms to minors and how they're preventing those harms.Fund the National Academy of Sciences to conduct at least five comprehensive studies on the risks and harms to minors who use social media.Let's call it “the withdrawal effect.” It applies to smartphone and social media overuse—and many other behaviors we overdo at the expense of our health and sanity.Today, we'll dive into the science of social media/smartphones and mental health—and what the withdrawal effect can tell us about quitting any bad habit.References:Michael EasterBooks: The Comfort Crisis, The Scarcity BrainNewsletter: Twopct.comBrain.fm App (First month Free, then 20% off subscription)Discount Code: coachdamiensdCaldera Lab Skin Carewww.calderalab.comDiscount Code: CoachDLinks:IG:@coachdamien_sd@damienrayevans@livinthedream_podcast YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCS6VuPgtVsdBpDj5oN3YQTgFB:https://www.facebook.com/coachdamienSD/

He contrasts that with the modern era, marked by abundance and comfort, and the ensuing repercussions on our physical and mental well-being. Michael introduces the concept of the “scarcity loop,” a three-part behavior cycle which helps explain modern challenges such as overeating, addiction, gambling, and materialism, and offers practical strategies to break free from its cycle. If you feel like you can't live without your phone or if you'll emotionally eat, this one's for you! Do you get the weekly summary on your phone that shows how much time you've spent across the week and cringe? This episode will explain why our phones have such a hold on us, and share the connection between phone addiction and food addiction, plus what we can do about it. Today, Jenn is talking about phone and food addictions and how they are actually quite similar. She kicks off the episode talking about how our phones are set up for addiction and what the factors are that lead to phone addiction. There are some fascinating reasons why you are not able to put your phone down! Jenn discusses the effect boredom has on both our phone and eating habits, and how innovation has impacted both. Lastly, she covers how to shift the dynamic with our phones with tangible tips you can take to reduce phone usage. Tune in for this informative episode that'll give you tips to reduce your phone addiction. Perhaps you can use this approach to your shifting your phone habits as a surrogate for adjusting your relationship with foodThe Salad With a Side of Fries podcast is hosted by Jenn Trepeck, discussing wellness and weight loss for real life, clearing up the myths, misinformation, bad science & marketing surrounding our nutrition knowledge and the food industry. Let's dive into wellness and weight loss for real life, including drinking, eating out, and skipping the grocery store. IN THIS EPISODE: ●   [7:24] How do our phones set us up for addiction?●   [14:18] What are food and phone addiction similarities?●   [17:01] How does our memory work and how can our phone usage affect our memories?●   [18:16] How do phones impair our sleep?●   [20:33] Jenn discusses the use-case and how food and phones help us avoid feeling unwanted feelings.●   [24:06] How does boredom impact our habits with our phones?●   [29:26] How has innovation impacted both food and electronics? ●   [34:08] How can we shift our dynamics with our phones?●   [41:22] How long does the wave/craving last if we don't give in?●   [42:47] Tips for reducing our phone addictions. ●   [47:38] How can we redirect our time?KEY TAKEAWAYS:●   Many times the reason why we cannot put our phones down or step away from them is because we are waiting for the dopamine hit. Each time the phone rings, pings, or sends a notification, we get a little hit of dopamine that makes us feel good or important. We never want to miss what could be coming through for us. ●   Statistically, Americans check their phones about 47 times a day. Ages 18-24 average 82 times per day. That is more than 9 billion phone checks a day. Oftentimes we don't know why we picked up our phone, or we end up scrolling on social media and forget why we originally picked it up. ●   There are ways to create a positive relationship with our phones and technology. The first step is creating awareness of how much time we spend on them and why we are using them.  QUOTES: “Both of them can make us feel bad about ourselves but keep us coming back for more. Interestingly, they change the structure and function of our brains, including our ability to form new memories, think deeply, focus, and absorb and remember what we read.” - Jenn Trepeck “Every interaction we have with the phone, from the colors it uses, to the alerts that it's giving us, to the ‘why did I pick up my phone, now I'm in a rabbit hole of Instagram, like I know I picked this up for a reason'. That is the overwhelm, it is almost instant decision fatigue. And so it disrupts our ability to pay attention.” - Jenn Trepeck “When we reach for the phone, what is it that we're trying to do, and what is it that we're trying not to do. Are we trying to do something or are we trying to avoid something? And we can start to take some notes on that or just notice what's happening.” - Jenn Trepeck “To me, all the disease outcomes of the processed food and the food "innovation" is what we're starting to see from the phones, creating this mental health crisis.” - Jenn Trepeck"It's not about abstinence, it's about consciousness and being deliberate in the choices." - Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:How to Break Up with Your PhoneBecome A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries Instagram

Today, I am blessed to have here with me Andy Hnilo. He is a former athlete, model, and actor who turned his life upside down. On March 20th, 2011, he was struck by a series of large vehicles while crossing a busy street, a trauma that caused seven broken ribs, a collapsed lung, and an extreme compound fracture. Determined to come back even stronger, Andy was able to be back on the runway in less than three months. He could heal his skin by immersing himself in a diligent skincare routine that included a mineral-rich blend of four clays, organic superfoods, and nutrient-dense ingredients: a process that healed his body. Andy is now the founder and CEO of Alitura, which makes life-changing skin care products with organic superfoods. His company uses active ingredients and no fillers. The company is focused on complete wellness with visible anti-aging results that accelerate cell rejuvenation without harsh toxins or synthetic ingredients. In this episode, Andy Hnilo speaks about what you need to know about the toxicity in most skincare, makeup and products we put on our skin and how this contributes to our health as well as the appearance of our skin. You move to quickly strike one down, only for another two, three, four to pop up in its place. Anne, being in the beginning stages of her recovery journey, worries that once she strikes down her most glaring addiction issue, that others may move to take its place in her life.
