Chris Paul and Burning Bright finally sit down with Francis Ford Coppola's 1972 masterpiece The Godfather, based on the Mario Puzo novel and starring Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall, and Diane Keaton. Both guys came to it fresh, with Burning Bright admitting he had never even watched it before this episode, and walked away convinced it absolutely lives up to its legendary reputation. The conversation centers on the changing of the guard from Vito's old world honor culture to Michael's coldly pragmatic zero sum game, with Sonny stuck as a will without tact and Tom Hagen as the official interpreter who fails because the rule set itself is dying. They dig into the controlled opposition between honor and business as two different justifications for chasing the same worldly prize, why both sides are spiritually bankrupt, and how Vito's actual power projection in his youth is what makes his soft power work as an old man. From there they go big picture on Donald Trump as Vito (and maybe as Michael), narrative warfare as the prime lever of power rather than an ancillary tool, mandate cultivation versus mandate manufacturing, the horse head as the perfect actual narrative fusion, and why don't insult my intelligence is finally where the audience is landing on the regime.

Above all, we want to set the tone for a wild 2006 season.About the FilmLaurence Sterne published The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman in nine volumes between 1759 and 1767. The novel is famous for being playful, digressive, and nearly impossible to adapt. Notably, the narrator barely manages to get himself born across hundreds of pages. Winterbottom and his team turned that problem into the whole joke. As a result, the movie follows a fictional crew trying to film the book. Steve Coogan plays a vain version of himself, plus Tristram and his father, Walter. Meanwhile, Rob Brydon plays a needling version of himself and Uncle Toby. The screenplay carries the pseudonym "Martin Hardy," although Frank Cottrell-Boyce actually wrote it. Furthermore, the cast includes Keeley Hawes, Shirley Henderson, Dylan Moran, Naomie Harris, Kelly Macdonald, and Jeremy Northam. Keanu Reeves stars as Kevin Lomax, a small town defense lawyer with an impressive undefeated winning streak. He's scouted by Al Pacino as John Milton, the head of an acclaimed New York City law firm, who wants to change Lomax's life by adding him to the roster. Eagle-eared viewers may recognize the name John Milton as a reference to the author of legendary Bible fanfiction Paradise Lost. This might be your first indication that Pacino's character is the devil himself, that Reeves's character is about to make a Faustian bargain, and that the legal system is about to be used as an allegory for Christian morality. This is the most 1990s trope imaginable, an era when filmmakers were obsessed with elevating the mundane by showing it as a backdrop between the battle between angels and demons. Another distinctly 1990s decadence is needing the movie to be "smart, sexy, funny" — when THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE does rarely jump the shark into groan-inducing campiness, it's when the film attempts to flatter the viewer's sense of sophistication. However it's still a welcome nostalgic departure from mainstream movies nowadays that openly market themselves as slop from a trough for the lowest bidder. But it's the smart writing and impressive production design that makes THE DEVIL'S ADVOCATE's heavy handed tropes and conservative morality feel delightfully predictable instead of tediously formulaic.
