Monday Mayhem shows are a throwback to the roots of The Survival Podcast. Fast riffs on many topics in real time. No deep presentations or digging into the finer points of a an aquaponics system. A mix of practical prepping, current news and economic trends and real opinions you will never hear from main stream or even most alternative media. Today we discuss investing in Bitcoin for income not equity gain, Trumps new expected EO on beef processing and why Flock Cameras losing contracts is good news, but not the end of mass surveillance. The SEC finally wrote the rules down. Citi is about to hold your Bitcoin. Thirty-nine state banking associations are building their own blockchain. And a $3 billion short squeeze shoved Bitcoin through $71K — right before Joel disappears on his honeymoon until November. On August 18, the SEC published a 402-page proposing release called Regulation Crypto Assets: two registration exemptions plus a conditional safe harbor that can finally retire the "investment contract" label once an issuer permanently stops the managerial efforts it promised. For eight years this industry was regulated by lawsuit. For once, nobody had to get sued to find out what the rules were. Meanwhile Bitcoin ripped more than 20% in a week — and is still down on the year. Joel says zoom out: $81K keeps rejecting price, that's a double top, and the four-year cycle still points at a bottom somewhere between late October and early December. Which makes this rally a bull trap until proven otherwise. Also in this one: Open USD and its 140-partner consortium taking aim at Circle and Tether, the BankChain Alliance putting 3,283 banks on a chain of their own, Arthur Hayes coming out of retirement to sell food for AI agents, 512GB Macs that run frontier models on your desk, Anthropic's $65 billion run rate ahead of its IPO, and the guy calling the entire AI industry a con. This is the last one until mid-November. Joel's getting married. Johann Kurtz returns to TFTC to explain why young people are broke despite rising real wages and falling unemployment. Kurtz and Marty Bent break down the measurement problem buried inside GDP and inflation data, the two-income trap, collapsing home ownership, and the real cost of living in a low-trust society. They dig into social capital, status games, the fertility collapse, and why tight-knit virtue-driven communities still produce large families. A grounded macro conversation about money, family formation, and building a life worth living. On The Kara Goldin Show, I sit down with Dr. Whitney Hovenic, double board-certified dermatologist, Mohs surgeon, and Co-Founder of SPOOGE — a mineral SPF brand with serious dermatology expertise, a playful attitude, and a mission to change how people think about daily sun protection. We talk about why sunscreen has always had a branding problem, what Whitney is seeing in her practice as she treats skin cancer patients — including people in their 20s and 30s — and why Gen Z and Gen Alpha tanning trends have made this conversation more urgent than ever. Whitney shares how SPOOGE came to be, including the story behind the name, and why she and her co-founder Hillary Schieve wanted to build a brand that makes SPF feel as routine as brushing your teeth. We also get into Hillary's personal connection to the mission as a kidney transplant recipient on lifelong immunosuppressants, and why daily protection is not optional for so many people. We also talk about what traditional SPF messaging gets wrong, how humor can help people engage with skin health, and what it takes to create mineral, reef-safe formulas that people actually want to use every day. Plus, Whitney shares what she has learned from SPOOGE's first year — from editor love and awards to retail traction, medspa reorder rates, TikTok buzz, and strong Amazon performance. If you're interested in learning what it takes to build a beauty brand with a serious mission, change behavior around daily SPF, or make skin health feel modern, fun, and approachable — check out the interview on my podcast. Bitcoin heads into September under pressure as renewed U.S.-Iran strikes push oil above $90 and markets sharply raise the odds of a Fed rate hike after Kevin Warsh's hawkish Jackson Hole speech. Despite September's historically weak reputation, midterm-year seasonality has often been much stronger, while gold is still coming off its best month since January. Learn more about your ad choices. Tether is evolving far beyond its roots as a stablecoin issuer, building a broader financial and technology company around USDT, U.S. Treasuries, Bitcoin, gold and even farmland. The conversation covers how its new KPMG audit addresses years of criticism, why Tether is hedging its exposure to the dollar with scarce assets, and how it could eventually become one of the largest buyers of U.S. government debt. itcoin is back below $78,000 after another failed attempt to establish $80K as support, while ETF inflows finally broke their winning streak and Kevin Warsh's Jackson Hole comments increased expectations for tighter monetary policy. Matt explains why Warsh's apparent commitment to returning inflation to 2% could mean higher rates and less liquidity, creating another potential headwind for Bitcoin. The bigger story is the growing convergence between Bitcoin mining and AI infrastructure. Miners already control power, grid connections, land, cooling and data-center infrastructure that AI companies desperately need, pushing companies like IREN, Riot and CleanSpark deeper into AI. Matt argues that this creates enormous opportunities but also new risks, including AI-focused regulations spilling into Bitcoin mining and the possibility that an eventual AI correction exposes companies whose valuations have become too dependent on the boom. Bitcoin spent last week consolidating after its huge move higher, and Craig sees the lack of a major snapback as a positive sign. The weekly candle finished essentially flat, even after selling following Warsh's Jackson Hole comments, leaving Bitcoin surprisingly strong but too messy for Craig to trade right now. Instead of forcing a position, he's waiting for Bitcoin to establish cleaner trend and cyclicity before getting involved again. While Bitcoin sorts itself out, Craig is searching deeper in the market for the structures he prefers: strong trends, clean pullbacks, good cyclicity, and momentum. He highlights Pump.fun as an example of that structure and discusses Zora, CHIP, and ZRO as charts showing characteristics he watches for, while emphasizing that these are examples rather than trade recommendations. For now, the strategy is simple: stay patient, trade where the clean trends are, and wait for Bitcoin's next leg. Happy Hodling, Everyone. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
August is officially in the books! And after another month of AI enthusiasm, strong corporate earnings, stubborn inflation, rising oil prices, geopolitical uncertainty, Fed drama and some major market breakouts, it's time to step back from the daily noise and see where the money actually went. On today's episode of TraderMerlin, we're pulling up the charts and reviewing the performance of our Top 8 Market Segments for August. Because sometimes the best way to understand what's happening in the financial markets isn't another headline... It's simply looking at which assets are actually going UP—and which ones aren't. We'll compare the performance of the major markets and see where traders and investors were putting their money throughout August. We'll discuss: U.S. Equities – The S&P 500, Nasdaq, Dow and Russell 2000 all finished August higher despite plenty of volatility along the way. Technology – AI remained one of the dominant market themes, with another massive Nvidia earnings report helping reinforce enthusiasm for the AI trade. Small Caps – Are smaller companies finally participating more meaningfully in the bull market? Gold – Precious metals delivered another powerful month as inflation, geopolitical risk and concerns about the dollar drove demand. Bitcoin & Crypto – Bitcoin was one of August's standout performers as digital assets attracted another wave of capital. Energy & Crude Oil – Middle East tensions and disruptions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz kept energy markets firmly in focus. Bonds & Interest Rates – Treasury yields remained a major source of volatility as investors digested inflation data and Kevin Warsh's message from Jackson Hole. The U.S. Dollar – What currency markets are telling us about inflation, monetary policy and global capital flows. But we're not just ranking winners and losers. We're asking the much more important question: What is August's performance telling us about September? The S&P 500 gained roughly 2.5% in August, continuing an earnings-driven bull market. Semiconductor stocks remained strong, with Nvidia gaining nearly 9% for the month, while software stocks continued their impressive recovery. But some of the biggest moves weren't in stocks at all. Bitcoin gained more than 20% during August, while gold also posted a powerful monthly advance as investors increasingly looked toward scarce assets amid concerns about inflation, government debt and monetary policy. Meanwhile, crude oil remains one of the market's biggest wild cards as renewed tensions in the Middle East pushed Brent back above $90 per barrel to close out the month. That's a very interesting combination: Stocks rising. Gold rising. Bitcoin rising. Oil rising. Bond yields remaining elevated. Normally, those assets aren't all telling us the same story. So what exactly is the market pricing in? That's what we'll try to figure out today. And the timing couldn't be better because tomorrow we turn the calendar to September—historically one of the most difficult months of the year for U.S. equities. For additional market research, check out CME Group Markets, Federal Reserve Economic Data, and Nvidia Investor Relations. Listen now:
US equity futures are mixed but off their lows, with S&P futures slightly down. Bonds are little changed overall, while the dollar is slightly softer after Friday's gains. Crude is firmer amid renewed US-Iran strikes, precious metals remain under pressure, and Bitcoin is modestly higher but still below 79K level. Sentiment is soft into this week as tensions in the Middle East escalated over the weekend. US forces struck Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island, with Tehran responding via intercepted missile strikes on US bases in Jordan. It was the first direct exchange of fire since July. Hence, diplomacy remains stalled. Companies Mentioned: KKR&Co., ONEOK, Inc., SK Hynix
Jonathan Drake kicks off a brand new series, tackling Spooner's dense essay "Poverty, Its Illegal Cause and Legal Cure." Born out of Spooner's own brutal experience losing everything in the Panic of 1837, this essay argues poverty isn't natural scarcity, it's an artificial deprivation created when contracts get manipulated by a judiciary that either misunderstands natural law or willingly ignores it. Expect a deep dive into freedom in banking, the true nature of debt, and why "equal distribution of wealth" here has nothing to do with Marxism despite how it might sound on the surface. Jon also lays groundwork for a genuinely compelling Bitcoin connection, framing proof of work versus proof of stake as a real world natural law versus artificial barrier showdown. Sprinkled throughout are stories about roly polys, a butterfly named after a Spartan admiral, and a spirited debate about whether chartreuse has always been green.

John reads Warsh's Jackson Hole speech as a nothing burger for Bitcoiners: a Fed chair must talk tough on inflation because signaling anything else would send inflation expectations and yields higher, while the long-run path of financial repression stays the same Warsh reported that 54% of PCE basket components rose more than 3% over the past year, called 4.1% unemployment full employment, and framed inflation as squarely the Fed's problem to solve Markets read the speech as hawkish anyway: the two-year yield rose about 12 basis points while gold and Bitcoin each gave back roughly 3.5% On last week's expanded Treasury buybacks, John points to two signals: a 30-year yield near 5.3% is clearly bothering policymakers, and the Fed has never meaningfully reduced its holdings of 10-year-plus Treasuries even during quantitative tightening, evidence that natural buyers of long-dated government paper are scarce The hosts revisit the shallowest bear market thesis they developed together on this show: a roughly 52% drawdown against 77% to 90%-plus in prior cycles, with the June low of $58,000 sitting just below the 200-week moving average before price rocketed back through it John explains why he believes the June low will hold, while framing the 50-week moving average near $82,000 as the level the market is watching to declare a new bull market Glassnode data shows 1.05 million Bitcoin of long-term holder supply with a cost basis between $83,000 and $86,000, the first heavy resistance shelf above spot, and the hosts discuss how cost basis shapes market psychology The debasement trade is back in ETF volumes, with GLD and IBIT both in the top ten most traded funds, and the Bitcoin-to-gold ratio breaking its year-long downtrend after gold's 2025 outperformance Bitcoin's long correlation with software stocks broke down in June, and John argues it was always the wrong frame, a point Lyn Alden's Wall Street Journal essay makes at length: Bitcoin is a protocol of value, not another technology stock A broad Treasury ETF has returned roughly negative 18% after inflation over fifteen years while the supply of government debt keeps expanding, the picture John says is quietly ending the era of Treasuries as the world's default store of value ► For high-net-worth individuals and corporations seeking to build generational wealth with Bitcoin, Swan Private is your guide ✔ https://www.swanbitcoin.com/private?utm_campaign=private&utm_medium=sponsorship&utm_source=podcast&utm_content=swan_signal_live ► Secure your bright orange future with the Swan IRA today! Crypto News: Bitcoin and altcoins see price pullbacks. Fed chair Kevin Warsh comes out hawkish hinting at rate hikes. Investors at least $4.7 billion underwater across Trump crypto ventures, Public Citizen says.
Bitcoin's breakout may be signaling the start of a new bull phase, with the setup looking similar to the 2023 move that followed the Silicon Valley Bank crisis. Ran Neuner argues that compressed volatility, Bitcoin's bounce from long-term technical levels, renewed ETF inflows and improving macro conditions all support the idea that the bear market may be over. The conversation also covers potential tension between Kevin Warsh and Scott Bessent, why the Clarity Act may still fail, and what that could mean for crypto regulation. Would you trust two brothers with zero aviation experience to run El Salvador's helicopter tours, plane charters, and Bitcoin travel experiences? Thousands of Bitcoiners already have. Today on Live From Bitcoin Beach, I sit down with Mauricio and Diego Villeda, founders of Bitcoin Life, the Bitcoin tourism and concierge service company that convinced El Salvador's Minister of Defense to lend them Air Force helicopters. I wanted the full story of how two guys orange-pilled by a $5K Bitcoin client built the most Bitcoin-native travel operation on the planet, and they didn't hold back.It all started with a free Notion page built to help Bitcoiners travel El Salvador, covering transportation, places to stay, and spots that accept Bitcoin over the Lightning Network. Three days after launch, Stacy Herbert retweeted it, and strangers at the Adopting Bitcoin conference were showing the brothers their own guide without knowing who made it. That one retweet turned a side project into a company, and it proved something maxis have said for years, that proof of work beats marketing budgets. These days the brothers run helicopter tours to places most tourists never see, including Lake Ilopango, a lake that had zero tourism when gangs controlled the area. They fly clients beyond El Zonte, land in soccer fields, and pay the local caretakers in sats to clear the space. For Bitcoiners flying in from abroad, they also run VIP airport pickups that take you from immigration straight to a helicopter, plane charters connecting El Salvador with Próspera in Honduras for around $3,000 per group, and real estate guidance for investors front-running the nation-state adoption wave. Every booking, vendor, and ticket runs on Bitcoin, feeding the Bitcoin circular economy that fiat skeptics love to claim doesn't exist.Their biggest project is still ahead, a Bitcoin Street in the Centro Histórico of San Salvador where every business accepts Bitcoin, complete with an academy, an art gallery, and rooftop coffee shops. The brothers are raising from investors before Bitcoin Histórico this November, and I love their case for it. A district that was too dangerous to visit a few years ago deserves a permanent Bitcoin landmark, and low time preference built this country's turnaround. If you've ever wanted to see El Salvador from a military helicopter while paying in sats, these are your guys. How did Bitcoin react to Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's first Jackson Hole speech? Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh delivers his first Jackson Hole keynote today, and crypto traders are watching for whether the Fed will back the Treasury's plan to cap long-term borrowing costs. Bitcoin has climbed from $64,000 to $80,000 in a week on those expectations — a dovish signal could extend the rally, while a push for Fed independence could send it lower. A Note from James:In 1790, one of the easiest ways to get rich in America was the old-fashioned way: marry someone rich.George Washington did pretty well that way. Benjamin Franklin, meanwhile, was so deep in debt that he offered to marry a woman if her parents would mortgage their house to pay off his printing press debt. When they said no, he married someone else who had money. And back then, debt was not just annoying. It could land you in debtor's prison. Actual prison. And not just you—your wife and kids could go too.Fast-forward to the 1900s, and most Americans still were not buying stocks. Only a tiny percentage owned shares. Everyday people were gambling, playing the numbers, using dream-interpretation books to decide what lottery number to play, and trying to find some edge that would move them a little closer to security. My guest today, Joseph Moore, literally wrote the book on this: How to Get Rich in American History: 300 Years of Financial Advice That Worked (& Didn't).The book is full of strange, funny, surprising stories about money in America: Franklin, Washington, debtor's prison, the Great Depression, bucket shops, real estate booms, FIRE, crypto, debt, index funds, and all the scams people keep falling for.But the bigger lesson is that the basic patterns have not changed as much as we think.People want security. People want freedom. People want hope. People want a way out. And whenever there is hope, there is usually someone selling a formula.Joseph has very little patience for the usual personal finance myths. Debt does not make you rich. Opportunity makes you rich. Real estate is not always a magic wealth machine. The stock market was not designed to be everyone's retirement plan. FIRE can work, but it can also become the CrossFit of personal finance. And optimism, marriage, mobility, risk, and solving other people's problems may matter more than almost anything else.If you think the rules for getting rich have changed completely, this conversation may convince you how little human nature has changed.Episode Description:Joseph Moore joins James to talk about the long, strange history of getting rich in America. His book, How to Get Rich in American History, looks at 300 years of financial advice—what worked, what failed, what people kept repeating, and what today's money culture keeps forgetting. The conversation starts in 1790, with George Washington, Martha Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Stephen Girard, debt, leverage, and debtor's prison. Joseph explains that many early American fortunes were built through risk, borrowed money, marriage, luck, and then—critically—de-leveraging over time. That becomes one of the core lessons of the episode: debt does not make people rich. Opportunity does. Debt is only a tool that allows someone to grab more of an opportunity than they otherwise could. But if the opportunity is not real, or the person cannot handle the risk, debt destroys them.James and Joseph then move into real estate. Joseph argues that real estate is a good way to build a modest middle-class fortune, but not usually the path to the biggest fortunes. In modern America, he says, real estate often functions as a short on the dollar, an income annuity in a low-dividend world, a tax shelter, and a way for ordinary people to use leverage they could not access anywhere else. But that does not make buying a house automatically smart. Renting versus buying depends on age, mobility, location, family needs, inflation, taxes, maintenance, transaction costs, and opportunity cost. The conversation then turns to the stock market. Joseph challenges the usual historical charts that claim anyone could have invested a fixed sum in 1929 and held forever. Most Americans could not invest that way. There were no index funds, mutual funds had high fees, and buying an index directly required enormous capital. Instead, everyday people went to bucket shops, bet on price moves, played the numbers, and treated gambling as a kind of financial hope.James and Joseph also discuss passive investing, shadow indexing, the rise of ETFs and 401(k)s, and the way the stock market has become a mass retirement promise. Joseph points out that this is historically new. For most of American history, no ordinary person would have expected to retire on the stock market. From there, the episode moves to FIRE: financial independence, retire early. Joseph has lived part of that story himself. He built enough wealth through rental real estate after 2008 to stop working for a period, only to discover that early retirement was not automatically fulfilling. He compares FIRE to CrossFit: extreme, demanding, sometimes powerful, sometimes injurious, and not a lifestyle most people actually want. The final section asks the big question: What has consistently worked?Joseph boils the lessons down to five pillars: solve other people's problems, take risks, move toward opportunity, marry well, and believe you can. James adds that optimism matters because it keeps people in the game long enough to get more shots on goal. The result is a conversation about money, but also about history, risk, luck, marriage, mobility, discipline, scams, and the difference between getting rich and staying rich. What You'll Learn:Why early American wealth often involved marriage, leverage, luck, and risk. How George Washington's marriage to Martha helped fund the Washington we remember. Why Benjamin Franklin's public advice about debt did not match his own early financial behavior. What debtor's prison meant in early America, including the risk to families. Why debt is a tool, not a wealth strategy by itself. Why opportunity—not debt—is what actually makes people rich. Why real estate can build middle-class wealth but rarely creates the biggest fortunes. How buying a home can reduce mobility and opportunity, especially for younger people. Why renting versus buying is situational, not a universal rule. Why most Americans historically could not invest in the stock market the way modern charts imply. What bucket shops and “the numbers” reveal about everyday financial hope. How passive investing changed the purpose of the stock market. Why stock-market concentration is not new, but mass participation is.Why FIRE can work mathematically and still fail psychologically. How older financial-independence stories often hid trust funds, inheritances, or outside support. Why inflation is one of the biggest risks to early retirement. Why getting rich and staying rich require different behavior. Why successful people often take risk early and reduce risk later. Why optimism is financially useful when it keeps people in the game. The five recurring pillars Joseph sees across American wealth-building history.Timestamped Chapters:[05:00] How to Get Rich in 1790James asks Joseph how someone got rich in early America, starting with George Washington, Martha Washington, and marriage as a financial
