Send us a textA MUST LISTEN! This in far from a dismissal of past guests and interviews. This is a personal and human conversation that is insightful and inspiring from struggle to achievement and perhaps a pathway to the later. June and I had a mishap in schedule that, had it not happened, I don't think we would have had the conversation that we came away with. Her background of going from lawyer to playwright is enough to inspire anyone question their passion into the arts to take the leap. We follow with the lessons of writing a disaster of a play and getting the craft wrong but, yet, finding the engine. We examine her process, need vs premise, skeletal biographies, working backwards to move forwards in terms of character backgrounds, the gentle form of interrogation by starting with love, exploring unknown markets, inspiring playwrights and (un)appreciating the classics, reading vs viewing  a play, and compromise, sacrifice, and tradeoffs. It's a very philosophical episode that playwrights of all levels will walk away with something huge. Enjoy!June Carryl is a playwright, actor and director. Her plays include LA BÊTE - A One Act which won the Encore! Producers Award, Spirit of the Fringe Award, and  Orgasmico Most Orgasmic Writing Award in 2014, STONE ANGELS, BLOWFLY; MOURNING STORY, BABY TOES, SEDUCER, THE RINGS OF SATURN (The Living Room Series, Blank Theatre), GOD'S WIFE, and THE ART OF YES.

It's been a weird year, so far… water and wind in the north; dry hot droughts in the south. Not sure if that has anything to do with a tiny moth reported to me on many occasions: 5 – 7 mm long; golden wings, held over the body like a roof. And a bright orange hairdo, reminiscent of Split Enz or Cirque de Soleil The webbing clothes moth is extremely common in Christchurch – many folk up on the hill have asked me about this critter; and when I tell them the identity some panic seems to break out. I expect there will be other populations elsewhere in New Zealand, but they largely go unnoticed! This “webbing” cloths moth is really a recycler of woollen materials: yes, clothes, but especially carpets! It seems to like open spaces with keratin – lots of keratin It's quite logical, really. When a sheep dies, or you run over a cat on the road, a bird whacks against the window and knocks itself out, the recycling squad will be on the scene of the accident very quickly indeed. Blowfly maggots eat the meat, beetles take care of harder or tougher parts of the cadaver (muscles, sinew, bones), skin decays and softens through fungal and bacterial organisms… Ashes to ashes, dust to dust But who is tasked with the destruction, digestion and recycling of the keratin (feathers, fur, wool, hair, nails and even hard skin)? You got it: caterpillars of the clothes moths (and the grubs of carpet beetles)! It's their job (ecosystem service) What you see at home is damaged woollen carpet with bare patches, holes in woollen clothing; the damage becomes quite obvious after a few years of caterpillar browsing and life cycle after life cycle will establish a good population in your home. Control can be achieved with some residual insecticides – active ingredients such as permethrin and other synthetic pyrethroids will do the job well; (try Safeworx aerosol cans) It works well and is residual for 6 to 8 weeks, as long as the substrate treated is not exposed to direct sunlight; Now's a good time to check your place out and give them a run for their life!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Jeffrey Halls aka Dr El Suavo goes right back to virtually the beginning of the Archives timeline.
Jeff and his partner Julie were the team behind one of the most maverick independent touring companies “Intense Touring”.
The first person to bring Mr Bungle and Mike Patton to Australia, Nirvana (before anyone knew who they were), The Damned, Impaled Nazarene, Mark Of Cain, Neil Hamburger, Canned Hamm, Faxed Head, Phantom Surfers, Secret Chiefs, Blowfly, Crispin Glover and so many more.
Jeff and Julie went beyond what promotors usually do, taking bands into their own home, creating intense personal relationships and sharing the experience with their friends and fellow performers.
Why that is how the Mu Mesons got to support Mike Patton.
Remaining vehemently outside of the system and with no support from funding bodies.
Intense Touring brought some of the most unusual, cutting edge and profound acts to Australian shores.
They say inside every promotor is a stilted performer, well over the course of time that repression lifted and manifested as one of the worlds most frightening parlour magicians.
Jeff became Dr El Suavo.
He has toured internationally and extensively within Australia as the support act to Neil Hamburger.
He has a tendency to polarise audiences with his most unique blend of standup comedy and parlour magic, you can either take him or leave him but my god he has also released two albums under that moniker.
I cannot count how many times I have stood on stage, wiped my brow in exasperation and said “Ladies and Gentleman I now present: Dr El Suavo”

[CONNECTION SUCCESSFUL] There will come a time, in the not-too-distant future, when robots will overtake most of the jobs that we humans presently perform. This includes content creation. Machine learning technologies and AI capabilities are growing by the second. AI-generated content will certainly soon be proliferating on the Internet, with consumers less likely to be capable of differentiating between robot content and genuine products of the creative human brain. In the spirit of embracing the near-limitless potential of AI technology, a very special bonus episode of Lightnin' Licks Radio has been "created" in collaboration with the "good" people at Umbrella Laboratories. Welcome to the future, Lickers. An AI application (Diltrizatron 20000) was tasked to analyze every second of content released by Lightnin' Licks Radio from its inception to present day. The application was then programmed to create a new bonus episode reviewing the podcast's past episodes, including generating host personalities (JAKE and DEONDRA) to interact with each other as well as the listening audience in Podcast America. What would The Beatles' 1 album sound like if The Beatles never existed? What? That makes no sense. I did this show as a tribute to how every song they wrote (almost) was enduring and solid enough to be covered by their contemporaries as well as artists of the future.    The Kids From The Brady Bunch - Love Me Do (1972) This was the album on which "It's A Sunshine Day", "Keep On", and "Drummer Man" appeared. I guess you could call this album their Rubber Soul.  The Crickets - From Me To You (1964) At this point, The Crickets consisted of Sonny Curtis, Jerry Allison, Glen Hardin, and Jerry Naylor. Arranged by Leon Russell. Curtis would later write and sing the theme song for The Mary Tyler Moore Show, "Love Is All Around". He wrote two other songs POACA know. "I Fought The Law", originally recorded by Bobby Vee (who replaced The Crickets on the bill the night Buddy Holly died), and "More Than I Can Say" which was a huge hit years later for Leo Sayer.  Brenda Lee - She Loves You (1965) The Beatles had acted as a support act for Brenda Lee when she headlined a gig at the Star Club in Hamburg, West Germany, in 1962. For any other artist of the time, that must have seemed like the toppermost of the poppermost. The year before this, she recorded "Is It True" featuring Jimmy Page on guitar.  Sparks - I Wanna Hold Your Hand (1975) Produced by Tony Visconti, who also produced Bowie's Berlin trilogy. I cannot listen to Sparks for very long. I think the people who love them have some sort of soul deficiency. But for completion's sake, here.  David Clayton-Thomas - Can't Buy Me Love (1975) I think this was his last solo album before rejoining Blood, Sweat and Tears. Whew. Hard to believe this was never issued on CD.  After he rejoined, or maybe BECAUSE he rejoined, but more likely due to those old contractual obligations, their next two albums with him would be credited to Blood Sweat and Tears - Featuring David Clayton-Thomas. Did it make one damned bit of difference? It did not.  John Mayall - A Hard Day's Night (1976) The Beatles were deceptively excellent singers. This comes into evidence when others try to ape their recordings. Produced by Allen Toussaint, who wrote the entire record except for this one track. This album charted nowhere.  The Runaways - Eight Days a Week (1978) The Runaways were pretty limited instrumentalists. This is another deceptively difficult song to carry off. I don't think it's very good.  Alma Cogen - I Feel Fine (1967) "I'm so glad...he's got me in a whirl..." This recording was released posthumously a year after her death from leukemia. It is speculated that she had an affair with John Lennon, who shagged everything not tied down or named Cynthia at that point. Because he could.  Bee Gees - Ticket To Ride (1965) Released in 1970 without the consent of the group... but only in Germany, France, and Japan. The brothers didn't even know about it until they found it in a Swiss record store after the fact. They should have waited 7 more years. They would have made a mint.  Dolly Parton - Help! (1979) The bassist, Abe Laboriel, saw his son become Paul McCartney's drummer.  Marvin Gaye - Yesterday (1969) His next album was What's Going On.  Yellow Magic Orchestra - Day Tripper (1979)  Progress Organization - We Can Work It Out (1971) A Czech rock group. A little like Vanilla Fudge. They released exactly one album. This was on it. Aren't you happy I am here to do this stuff?  Kenny Rogers & The First Edition - Paperback Writer (1973) "If you really like it, you can help me write..." I imagine after this Kenny Rogers asked for his deposit on the practice room returned. This album was a soundtrack of their TV show of the time. I cannot tell if Thelma Camacho is on this record. I played a set of her solo stuff on one of my shows. It's awful.  Revelation - Yellow Submarine (1980) Sounds like Chic. Almost a carbon copy.  The Singers Unlimited - Eleanor Rigby (1977) A pretty cool reinvention of this excellent song. From Wikipedia: Gene Puerling took advantage of cutting-edge, multi-tracking techniques of German studio engineer Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer to create his harmonic concepts and the group's signature sound. In the overdubbing process, baritone Puerling and tenor Shelton would often add two additional middle parts, after which all parts were "doubled" and "tripled." Creating these extra tracks created the fuller, richer sound of the group's recordings. The group would record their songs by having Bonnie Herman record a simplified version of the melody, after which, Len, Gene, and Don would fill in the remaining parts. Once this process had been completed, Bonnie Herman's original melodic line would be replaced with a new one, in which she could add melodic embellishments and add "color" to the group's sound. Bass singer Len Dresslar was known as the voice of the Jolly Green Giant ("Ho, Ho, Ho!") for over 40 years, as well as the voice behind other jingles.  Bonnie Herman was the singer of the original "Like a Good Neighbor, State Farm Is There" commercial jingle, which ran for several years. She is the daughter of Lawrence Welk's original Champagne Lady Lois Best and Jules Herman, who was a trumpeter in the Welk orchestra. She is the niece of big band leader Woody Herman. Amen Corner - Penny Lane (1969) Amen Corner was a Welsh R&B-tinged pop band of the late '60s featuring singer Andy Fairweather-Low, organist Blue Weaver, guitarist Neil Jones, bassist Clive Taylor, saxophonists Allen Jones and Mike Smith, and drummer Dennis Bryon. You remember Dennis and Blue as two rock-steady members of that wonderful Bee Gees incarnation of the mid-to-late '70s.  The Anita Kerr Singers - All You Need is Love (1967) Another song that seems very simple, but without the dotted eight notes, it sounds like your rich Aunt is reading you a book. I like the touches of electric guitar.  François Glorieux - Hello, Goodbye (1977) This song translates unexpectedly well to slow classical piano...That caveman in the lower-left corner was a hidden member of The Beatles named Oook.  v Buck Owens - Lady Madonna (1976)  Brothers Johnson - Hey Jude (1976) You should know, if you do not, about an album released in 1976 called "All This and World War II". The soundtrack made money but the movie tanked.  Get Back - Clarence Reid (1969) Reid had the talent and chops to be as big as Otis Redding or Wilson Pickett, but he became more popular doing dirty parodies of soul hits (“S–ting off the Dock of the Bay,” “What a Difference a Lay Makes?”) with his XXX-rated alter-ego Blowfly.  The Percy Faith Strings - The Ballad of John and Yoko (1970) Squaresville! Isaac Hayes - Something (1970) All 11 minutes of it.  Willie Bobo and The Bo Gents - Come Together (1971) Aretha Franklin - Let It Be (1970) Maybe the best of all of these. Aretha made some shitty choices, but she was an angel in front of a mic.  Peter Frampton - The Long and Winding Road (1978) This happened. We all traipsed down to the theater in anticipation of some connection, some meaningful validation of what looked like a miracle about to happen. I cannot lie. When Billy Preston popped out of that statue or whatever, I felt pretty let down.  The Hollies - Draggin' My Heels (1977)

The Rock Box makes it's aura known as Sense goes out on his own, brothu! Sense's father "you know I could come get you" Sense "you could come try and we'll see how this goes" Soundsational has an uphill battle keeping the place clean and finding work. Hones his chops with local rockers and gets blown away by Load as did most of South Florida in the early 1990's DMD unabashedly boasts and brags about bagging groceries with future Helmet drummer John Stainer at Publix in Plantation. Witnesses Stainer's transformation firsthand from cover band drummer to fellow hardcore punker which ultimately culminates into a full-on brawl at a Plantation High Battle of the Bands in 1986. Upon his triumphant return to South Florida in 1999 Motel 666 is formed as Doug joins Sean and Chris Chavez (Human Buffet, Blowfly). From there DMD explains his early band Headcave in Huntsville AL and how it became the largest drawing group (300 peeps!) of that town's history as he left the Army in 1991.

FMF #11 - The Blowfly Principle: Identifying Bad Clients

It's No Secret with Dr T.

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 18, 2018 5:00

I don’t care what type of business you have, or how good your customer service is, you’re going to eventually have a few difficult clients, the ones that make you want to stay in bed on a Monday morning and not go to work.  And worst of all, they will think their behaviour is perfectly normal and acceptable, not realising they're complete tools. Bad Client Traits You need to learn that most difficult clients – actually let’s call them what they are, “bad clients” – exhibit the same traits. See if any of the following sound familiar to you: They complain about your prices They’re rude and stubborn They’re always requesting discounts If you give them an account they always pay late You know the clients I’m talking about. We’ve all had them and your business will continue to have them, unless you limit your exposure to them. Indentify Blowflies Early   You need to identify them early and get rid of them as soon as possible. Getting rid of bad clients frees up your time to see more good clients and it makes your whole work environment far more pleasant. My brother is a Dentist and we refer to Bad Clients as Blowflies, and together we have come up with a term called The Blowfly Principle. Now this may sound a little crude, but it fits perfect for these types of clients. Let’s say you’re standing in your front yard talking to your neighbour and you notice dog poop on your foot- path. Nothing-unusual there, and suddenly a blow fly passes in front of you and lands on the dog poop. Of course you keep talking and think nothing of it, but then all of a sudden something else flies past your face! What do you think it was? Was it a bird? No! Was it a plane? No! Was it another blowfly? Yes, because blowflies attract more blowflies! Blowflies Attract More Blowflies Bad Clients are similar to blowflies, because Bad Clients will attract more Bad Clients, because people associate socially with people who are similar to them. They’ll talk about the weather, which movies they’ve seen and which services they like and dislike. Bad Clients, if you keep them, will tell all their friends that you are the best business in the world because:  They can arrive late and you never complain about it, which is perfect if the midday movie runs over the scheduled time. They can cancel on the day without any penalty, which is important if the girls at the local club decide to meet for coffee and cake at the last minute. If they decide not to attend at all because something better came up there is no penalty, which is perfect for those days when they just couldn’t be bothered picking up the telephone and letting someone know they’re not coming And here’s the best one – If they complain about your fees you will give them an immediate 10% discount, which is great because booze and cigarettes are getting expensive. Must Play By Your Rules Do you really need to have these types of clients in your business, or would you prefer they visited your opposition? I have politely removed many clients from my past businesses and I make no apologies for this. It’s my business and therefore everyone must play by my rules. Of course Bad Clients, or blowflies, are a very small percentage of your total clientele and the majority of people will be a pleasure to work with, however it comes back to the type of business you want to have and how strict you are with discounts and accounts. Remember...blowflies love a good discount and accounts. The Blowfly Principle has been taken from Chapter 6 of It’s No Secret There’s Money in Small Business and the rest of the chapter talks about:  Identifying your ideal client and target market Attracting the right client Breaking your clients into A, B, C and D Categories I’ll leave you with this quote, which I believe is quite fitting for this artilce and podcast blog.  “You can’t make everyone happy, you’re not a pizza.” Power of Positivity If you have any questions please email me at tf@tysonfranklin.com If you have purchased and read my book I'd like to thank you. If you're still sitting on the fence and you're not sure if this book is for you, you can download the first 16 pages FREE.  And just before you go I'd like to make you aware of my There's Money in Small Business event being held in Cairns on the 17th - 18th August 2018.

This past weekend after learning that the legendary Clarence "Blowfly" Reid had passed away, I got to thinking about just how many times I had the good fortune of seeing him live. My first time was in 1993. I heard he was doing a show in Austin, and all I knew was that he was not only hilarious, but he was also basically the first rapper ever. His "Rap Dirty" single was straight up hip hop, before anyone even knew what hip-hop was. And like the title implies, it was basically a funny ol' sex rhyme. Blowfly hailed from Miami and it's no coincidence that many of the rappers from his town followed suit and released controversial, often over the top dirty songs as well. I wanted to meet the man who had so much influence on the culture that I loved, but really never got the recognition for it, especially not back then. So Eric "CeePlus" Castillo and I hopped in my old ass Toyota station wagon with only an am radio in it and headed to Austin from Houston. We had no hook ups and no connection to Blowfly, and honestly didn't know anything about the band who would be opening for him/backing him - Dino Lee's Luv Johnson. The way I remember it, we went to Austin early in the day and went right to the venue. We started asking questions as to when Blowfly would arrive and someone gave me Dino Lee's number. Called him up, let him know we were there to do an interview, and he set us up right around soundcheck. The interview is actually with both Blowfly and Dino Lee. Blowfly's reverence for Dino and his music opened my eyes to a lot of things. Before that, I was about tired of white boy funk (#Austin) and especially white rappers. But after hearing Blowfly's opinions, I was pretty much a changed man (sort of). A man who pretty much invented a style, and continually innovated, and not to mention wrote many hits for himself and others under his actual name (Clarence Reid) was giving it up to bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Dino Lee's Luv Johnson. Shit tripped me out, I was 21 years old. And I got to sit and talk to Blowfly for an hour. Later in life I was working for a festival and met Tom Bowker, a dude from Miami who flew up to Chicago specifically to catch a Blowfly show, and ended up playing drums for him and managing him in his later years. Got to see him perform so many times in different capacities and even got to sit in while he crafted songs with Devin the Dude (which to my knowledge have never come out). Thanks to Tom Bowker, Blowfly's career rolled on literally until his final days. Dude was touring in a van punk rock style up until last year and if he would have pulled through this last time, would probably hop in the van again. He left us an incredible body of work, and for that I am thankful. And I am even more thankful for getting to spend some time here and there with him over the years. I don't remember who I did this interview for, or if it ever even came out. I know I played part of it on my radio show on KPFT that year and I think MAYBE it was for either Texas Beat or Thorazine. Not totally sure. Anyway, at the end Blowfly asks me to be sure and send him a copy. Pretty sure that never happened. Hope he can hear this wherever he is right now. We love you Blowfly! In the past few decades, the lobula plate of the fly has emerged as one of the leading models for the neural processing of optic flow stimuli that give rise to visual orientation behaviors (for recent reviews see Borst and Haag, 2002; Egelhaaf et al., 2002; Egelhaaf et al., 2002; Borst and Haag, 2007). The relative simplicity and accessibility of this neural system allows researchers to characterize the neural mechanisms that are thought to link the visual stimuli and the resulting behavioral responses. In the lobula plate, a set of 60 motion sensitive lobula plate tangential cells (LPTCs) integrate visual motion information from an array of local motion detectors, which form a retinotopic map of the fly’s visual space in the lobula plate. The selective pooling of local, direction selective inputs, together with a network of unilateral and bilateral interactions between LPTCs, shape and tune the response properties of LPTCs to behaviorally relevant optic flow stimuli. Over the years, lobula plate researchers assembled a formidable array of measurement and perturbation techniques that are usually available only in in-vitro systems. Additionally, the lobula plate and its presynaptic circuitry have been the subject of extensive and detailed modeling which allows a deeper synthetic understanding of the empirical results, as well as a more efficient and detailed way to generate hypotheses. In this work I used a selection of these tools to explore the role of intracellular processing of visual motion information in lobula plate neurons and the significance of spatial segregation and aggregation of these cells’ inputs in the context of their sensory function. Previous work on a network of ten LPTCs of the vertical system (VS cells) resulted in a prediction that due to lateral, gap-junction coupling of neighboring VS cells in their axon-terminals, the receptive fields of these cells should be broader in the axonal region than in the dendritic regions. I tested and confirmed this prediction using in-vivo calcium imaging and intracellular recordings. Using single-electrode voltage clamp I was able to perturb the flow of information in these cells and isolate the source of input responsible for this broadening, confirming that the coupling indeed takes place in the axon terminal. The separation of feed-forward, synaptic input in the dendrites from lateral, gap-junction coupling in the axon-terminals allowed me to experimentally ask what is the function of the receptive field broadening. Relying on model predictions, I showed that this broadening results in a more stable and smooth representation of optic flow in the output region of the cells than in their input region, when the fly is presented with naturalistic, patchy and non-uniform stimuli. I then showed, using a simplified compartmental model that the separation of axonal gap-junctions from the dendritic synaptic input makes the gap-junction coupling more effective, and is thus necessary to ensure the functionality of the lateral interactions.

Lateral Interactions and Receptive Field Structure of Lobula Plate Tangential Cells in the Blowfly

As a fly flies around in the world the visual scene moves constantly across its eyes. Depending on its path, this elicits a particular large-field motion pattern called ‘flow field’. Since the flow-fields are characteristic for particular flight trajectories they can be used to guide behavior, in particular to control the course of the fly. In the blowfly, these visual motion cues are mediated by a set of 60 motion-sensitive neurons called lobula plate tangential cells (LPTCs). The directionally selective response of the LPTCs has been ascribed to the integration of local motion information across their extensive dendritic trees. As the lobula plate is organized retinotopically the receptive fields of the tangential cells ought to be determined by their dendritic architecture. This appears not always to be the case. Recent experiments have revealed many lateral connections among tangential cells that appear to mediate their often complex receptive fields. Here single cells were ablated in order to determine which lateral connections are functionally important. I found that the ablation of a single cell, or class of cells revealed that the lateral connections among LPTCs can be the source of their local motion input, or augment the feedfoward input from local motion elements through either dendro-dendritic and axonal-axonal connections. Other connections between LPTCs were found to have no discernable functional significance and suggest that the lobula plate circuitry is yet to be fully revealed. The specific projects are outlined below. Input Circuitry to the HS- and CH-cells A single class of the lobula plate tangential cells the CH (centrifugal horizontal) neurons, play an important role in two pathways: figure-ground discrimination and flow-field selectivity. As was recently found, the dendrites of CH-cells are electrically coupled to the dendritic tree of another class of neurons sensitive to horizontal image motion, the horizontal system cells (HS). However, whether motion information arrives independently at both of these cells or is passed from one to the other is not known. Here I examine the ipsilateral input circuitry to HS and CH neurons by selective laser ablation of individual interneurons. I find that the response of CH neurons to motion presented in front of the ipsilateral eye is entirely abolished after the ablation of HS-cells. In contrast the motion response of HS-cells persists after the ablation of CH-cells. I conclude that HS-cells receive direct motion input from local motion elements, whereas CH-cells do not; their motion response is driven by HS-cells. This connection scheme is discussed with reference as to how the dendritic networks involved in figure-ground detection and flow-field selectivity might operate. Rotational Flow-Field Selectivity The group of neurons that processes horizontal motion forms a symmetric bilateral network that is able to combine information about motion presented in front of both eyes. Here I consider a group of 16 neurons whose connections have been explicitly identified. Each of these neurons has a large dendritic tree receiving information about ipsilateral local motion events that is spatially pooled to produce a directionally selective response. In addition, some of the lobula plate neurons are also sensitive to motion cues in front of the other eye. This information is carried by the spiking neurons H1, H2 and Hu that send their axons to the other side of the brain, where the H1- and H2-cells synapse onto 2 of the 3 HS-cells, and all three contralaterally projecting cell provide input to both CH-cells. The CH-cells are known to provide inhibitory input to the H1- and H2-cells. These network interactions appear to amplify the response to rotational stimuli and reduce the response to translation. I ablate either single HS-cells or both CH-cells in order to break the path whereby information about the opposite eye reaches the H1- and H2-cell. I did not find that these ablations affected the flow-field selectivity of either H1- and H2-cells. Network modeling showed that although the described circuitry does support rotational flow-field selectivity for the HS- and CH-cells, the model H2-cell does not show the expected flow-field selectivity. This suggests that the circuitry or cellular mechanisms underlying the response properties of the H2-cell are not completely understood. Basis of the Broad Receptive Field of VS-cells As the lobula plate is organized retinotopically the receptive fields of the tangential cells ought to be determined by their dendritic architecture. This appears not always to be the case. One compelling example is the exceptionally wide receptive fields of the vertical system (VS) tangential cells. Using dual intracellular recordings Haag and Borst (2004) found VS-cells to be mutually coupled in such a way that each VS-cell is connected exclusively to its immediate neighbours. This coupling may form the basis of the broad receptive fields of VS-cells. Here I tested this hypothesis directly by photo-ablating individual VS-cells. The receptive field width of VS-cells indeed narrowed after the ablation of single VS-cells, specifically depending on whether the receptive field of the ablated cell was more frontal or more posterior to the recorded cell. In particular, the responses changed as if the neuron lost access to visual information from the ablated neuron and those VS-cells more distal than it from the recorded neuron. These experiments provide compelling evidence that the lateral connections amongst VS-cells are a crucial component in the mechanism underlying their complex receptive fields, augmenting the direct columnar input to their dendrites. Vertical-Horizontal Interactions Two heterolaterally spiking cells, the H1- and H2-cells have been shown to be sensitive to vertical motion presented in the frontal portion of their receptive fields. Receptive field measurements performed here show that the H1-, VS1- and VS2-cells all respond to vertical downward motion across an almost completely overlapping portion of the frontal visual field. Using dual intracellular recordings Haag and Borst (2003) demonstrated that the VS1-cell but not the VS2-cell supplies input to both these cells. Through current injections into different compartments of the VS1-and VS2-cells I have provided physiological evidence that the output of VS1-cell near its dendritic arbors is the likely site of its input to the H1-cell. This coupling may form the basis of the vertical sensitivity of the H1- and H2-cell. I tested this hypothesis directly by recording the sensitivity of the H1-cell to horizontal and vertical motion in the frontal visual field both before and after the ablation of single VS1-cells. After the ablation of the VS1-cell the response of the H1-cell to vertical motion disappeared but its response to horizontal motion remained robust. These experiments demonstrate that the VS1-cell provides the input to the H1-cell that makes it sensitive to vertical motion in the frontal visual field likely through connections in their dendritic trees.
