US Supreme Court Allows Extension of Pennsylvania Mail-In Ballot Deadline to Remain in Place

The Republican Party has filed a number of lawsuits to prevent US states from extending deadlines for mail-in ballots. The Supreme Court, through a 4-4 vote on Monday, left such an extended deadline in place in Pennsylvania. How significant is this decision, and does it indicate anything about the Supreme Court?Luis Arce and vice-presidential candidate David Choquehuanca are leading in the Bolivian presidential contest with 52.4% of the vote, according to exit polls. Ex-President Carlos Mesa came in second place with 31.5%. The right-wing candidate Luis Camacho - allied with Jeanine Añez, the country's interim president - followed in a distant third place, with only 14.1% of the vote. The second- and third-place finishers combined still would not overtake Arce. Private polling companies showed Arce with a similar margin of victory, though it will be several days before the official results are released. Is this the advancement of a new South American socialist bloc, or is it too early to tell?"The [Iranian Maj. Gen. Qasem] Soleimani assassination has accomplished nothing that serves American interests and hardened global attitudes towards the United States, yet there seems to be an odd silence regarding the specifics of the fallout to his death from the opposition party and the US role in the Middle East in general," Christopher Mott wrote in an October 15 article for The National Interest. Is the US committed to proxy wars?A Monday article in Common Dreams was entitled, "Goldman Sachs: Benefits of 'Blue Wave' and $2.5 Trillion Stimulus Outweigh Wall Street Concerns Over Tax Hike on the Rich." The question is: is this sound analysis or political spin? There's an interesting piece in Consortium News by Caitlin Johnstone, entitled, "‘The Emails Are Russian' Will Be the Narrative, Regardless of Facts or Evidence." On that topic, Antiwar.com reported Monday, "Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe said on Monday that the information published by The New York Post that allegedly came from Hunter Biden's laptop is not part of a 'Russian disinformation campaign.' Ratcliffe's comments came after Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), the House Intelligence Committee chairman, said the scandal surrounding the Bidens and a Ukrainian gas company is a 'smear' coming 'from the Kremlin.'" What are we to make of this?"For the Cuban people, the US War on Venezuela stands out as a clear culprit contributing to the daily frustrations and hardships," Lee Schlenker wrote in a Monday piece in CounterPunch. "'Right now fewer trucks are coming in. Less merchandise too. And the quality isn't the same because a lot of the products are rotting on the fields because there's no oil for the trucks. Because of the US blockade on Cuba, no oil tankers can get here,' says Barbaro Medina, a produce vendor in Havana's Vedado neighborhood." Will Havana's food markets continue to be empty?"The United States Department of Justice filed an antitrust lawsuit against Google on Tuesday morning, kicking off the largest legal challenge the tech giant has ever faced," Business Insider reported Tuesday. What does this mean for social media? Is the government trying to control such platforms the same way it controls mainstream media?"The latest iteration of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, which has already claimed the lives of dozens of people, had been largely forgotten by the world before hostilities reignited in September," MintPress News reported Monday. "Now, almost a quarter of a century since the end of the last war between these entrenched enemies, the still contested region, claimed under international law by Azerbaijan and de facto controlled by its ethnic Armenian majority, has fallen under a new spell of violence." Evo Morales, the ongoing campaign of political persecution facing leftist political figures and journalists, and how the right wing's consolidation of Bolivia's media landscape is helping supposedly-interim Pres. More than 61,000 new COVID-19 cases were reported in the US on Sunday, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The struggle continues, but there's a bright blip on the radar: "The first person received a shot Monday morning in a large-scale test of a vaccine candidate being developed by Cambridge biotechnology company Moderna in collaboration with the US government," the Washington Post reported Monday. What does this all mean? The Ukrainian government and separatists in eastern Ukraine began a ceasefire on Sunday that could lead to the end of the six-year conflict if it holds. Ukraine's military said there were two breaches of the ceasefire on Monday: one in which separatists open fire with grenades and small arms overnight, as well as an incident around midday involving grenade launchers, machine guns and small arms. Does this signal real progress?“Changing the CCP's [Chinese Communist Party's] behavior cannot be the mission of the Chinese people alone. Free nations have to work to defend freedom,” US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a speech last week. "He went on to say that he had 'faith' the United States could successfully force a change in Beijing's behavior because it had done so before: with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991," DefenseOne reported on July 23. How do the realities of economic ties between China and the US impact Pompeo's rhetoric? This Wednesday, the CEOs of Facebook, Amazon, Google and Apple - four of the biggest companies in the technology industry - will appear before Congress under oath as the House Antitrust Subcommittee attempts to determine whether or not these internet firms have become too big and powerful. Here's a very rarely used political science term that I hope the audience can comprehend: Duh. Here are my questions. Can the genie be put back in the bottle? Can users' personal information be protected? Is there a way to stop these harassing phone calls that I am receiving from solicitors?Last Wednesday, US President Donald Trump "announced that the Justice Department would send hundreds of additional federal agents into cities to confront a rise in shootings and other violence," the New York Times reported on July 22. It's one thing to send agents into cities under the pretext or pretense of protecting federal buildings; it's another to send them into cities, uninvited to fight crimes. According to a Sunday report by Common Dreams, "People took to the streets in communities across the United States on Saturday in solidarity with ongoing protests against police brutality in Portland, Oregon, that have been met with a forceful and widely criticized response from federal agents deployed by President Donald Trump, who has said he will send teams to other major US cities."Why do people who should know better continue to champion this Russiagate story as if it either still has legs or, like a marathon runner at mile 16, will hopefully find some? A Sunday headline in the Washington Times read: "Source for Steele discredited anti-Trump dossier outed." What does all of this mean?"Amid a rapidly worsening COVID-19 pandemic, Bolivia's coup government has once again suspended much-anticipated elections that were due to be held on September 6," MintPress News reported on July 24. "This is the third time the administration of Jeanine Añez has postponed them because of the virus, setting a new date for October 18." What does this mean for Bolivia and the region going forward? "Israel is believed to be behind several recent acts of sabotage against Iranian civilian and military infrastructure, including a hospital, that have taken the lives of at least 19 people and has further disrupted an economy already in the throes of a devastating downturn brought on by a global pandemic and crippling economic sanctions," MintPress News reported on July 22. This past Wednesday, the Navy notified Gallagher that he would face a Navy SEAL review board to determine if he should be allowed to remain in the elite force. There appears to be some conflict between the president and others in his administration.Confirming ideologically conservative judges has been a top priority for Senate Republicans. So, while many of us have been focused on the impeachment hearings, the Trump administration has flipped two appeals courts to having majorities of Republican-appointed judges: the 11th and 2nd circuit courts, meaning GOP appointees now outnumber Democrat appointees on most of the nation's circuit courts. Is this a concern, and if so, how big of a concern is it?In a great story for MintPress, Alan MacLeod writes: "Facing increased resistance to its rule, the new 'transition' government of Jeanine Añez in Bolivia has begun to purge and censor potential threats to its authority, including in the media." What does this say about the resistance, and are there similarities between what Añez is doing in Bolivia and what Trump espouses?GUESTS:Robert Fantina — Pro-Palestine activist, peace and human rights leader, journalist and author of "Essays on Palestine." It's Friday, so that means it's panel time. Roger Stone, a longtime political operative and associate of US President Donald Trump, was found guilty of federal charges on Friday. "The panel of nine women and three men deliberated for less than two days before finding Stone, 67, guilty on all seven counts," the Washington Post reported. "A judge set Stone's sentencing for Feb. 6 and allowed him to remain free until then. Stone faces a legal maximum penalty of 50 years in prison — 20 years for the witness tampering charge and five years for each of the other counts, although a first offender would face far less time under federal sentencing guidelines."Acting US Ambassador to Ukraine William Taylor and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian affairs George Kent testified in open impeachment inquiry hearings before the House Intelligence Committee earlier this week. Former US Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch testified Friday. Here are my thoughts about this: the Democrats claim they have a rock-solid, smoking gun case for impeachment. What I have heard so far is a circumstantial presentation that requires what I call inferential supposition. Today, Yovanovitch's testimony sounded like what my colleague Bob Schlehuber called a bad HR exit interview.Bolivian President Evo Morales resigned from office on Sunday, and riots and protests intensified across the country Monday. On Tuesday, Senator Jeanine Añez, a leader of Bolivia's right-wing opposition party, declared herself interim president of the country, despite lacking the constitutionally required number of lawmakers to approve her appointment. In response to that development, Morales, who has accepted asylum in Mexico, tweeted that the coup in the country "has been consummated." What's going on in Bolivia?Islamic Jihad leader Baha Abu al-Ata was killed by an Israeli airstrike this week. "Israeli security forces killed a senior leader of the militant Palestinian group Islamic Jihad in a targeted airstrike in the Gaza Strip early Tuesday, sparking retaliatory rocket fire from the enclave and raising fears of escalating reprisals," the Washington Post reported Tuesday. "Syrian state media, meanwhile, reported that an attack about the same time struck the house of a second Islamic Jihad leader in Damascus. The reports said that the leader, Akram al-Ajouri, was not injured but that his son and one other person were killed and 10 others were wounded. Israel declined to comment on the reports." How dramatic and destabilizing of an action is this?"There are seven weeks until North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is scheduled to deliver a keynote New Year's Day speech. That will come a day after his self-imposed year-end deadline expires for the United States to come up with new proposals to restart nuclear talks," the Washington Post reported Thursday. "On Wednesday — with Washington transfixed on the House impeachment inquiry — North Korea significantly raised the stakes, making an implicit threat to resume long-range missile or nuclear tests. In an official statement, the North said it felt 'betrayed' by a US decision to continue with joint air drills with South Korea, calling it an 'undisguised breach' of an agreement made between Kim and Trump in Singapore last year."GUESTS:Lee Stranahan — Co-host of Fault Lines on Sputnik News Radio.Dr. Linwood Tauheed — Associate professor of economics at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
