Remember to rate and review GTP in iTunes: Click Here To Rate and Review Episode Details: Hidden Legal Figures Podcast host Derrick Alexander Pope returns to discuss what proved to be Civil Rights leader Martin Luther King, Jr.'s last legal stand and how its historical significance continues to impact protests to this day. In February 1968, more than 1,000 African-American sanitation workers in Memphis, Tennessee, went on strike after two black sanitation workers were killed on the job. A local pastor invited King to help the protestors nonviolently strike for job safety, better wages, benefits and union recognition. On March 28, 1968, King and other protestors peacefully marched through Memphis until violence broke out and looting took place, resulting in numerous injuries, arrests and the calling of the National Guard. Unhappy with the unwanted attention his presence and participation brought, the City of Memphis sued King and his Southern Christian Leadership Conference associates, including Hosea Williams, James Bevel, James Orange, Ralph Abernathy and Bernard Lee. On April 3, 1968, U.S. District Court Judge Bailey Brown issued a temporary restraining order against King as part of the city's attempts to thwart the next planned march. On today's special collaborative episode with the Hidden Legal Figures Podcast, Derrick Alexander Pope shares how King's lawyers Mike Cody and Lucius Burch sought and secured a compromise with the City of Memphis, which resulted in lifting the restraining order and allowing the march to go on with safety restrictions in place. The night before the compromise was formalized, King was tragically assassinated. This week, in celebration of Martin Luther King Day, we're replaying one of our favorite interviews with Derrick A. Pope of The Arc of Justice Institute (https://onthearc.net/). Remember to rate and review GTP in iTunes: Click Here To Rate and Review Episode Details: In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Hidden Legal Figures Podcast host Alexander Pope returns to discuss the landmark 1956 case against Civil Rights activist Martin Luther King, Jr. for his role in the year-long Montgomery, Alabama Bus Boycott and violation of a 1921 anti-boycott law. An example of white Alabama officials' effort to use the courts to quash the Civil Rights Movement, the trial began with numerous attempts by prosecutors to identify King as the official leader of the boycott. King's legal team countered by trying to establish "just cause" or "legal excuse" for the boycott, with 31 witnesses sharing their first-hand experiences with abusive bus drivers and reasons for participating in the boycott. In spite of these moving statements, Judge Eugene W. Carter found King guilty of violating the anti-boycott law and fined him $500 plus an additional $500 in court costs. King's appeal was rejected, and he later paid the fine. Pope, Managing Director of the Arc of Justice Institute and host of the Hidden Legal Figures Podcast, returns to discuss the landmark Civil Rights decisions in Buchanan v. Warley (1917) and Shelley v. Kraemer (1948). On today's episode, learn about the significance of each case and how the two decisions are intimately related. Preparing to celebrate its 104th anniversary in November 2021, the unanimous U.S. Supreme Court decision in Buchanan v. Warley ruled that Louisville, Kentucky's residential segregation laws were unconstitutional and violated the personal and property rights afforded to all U.S. citizens by the 14th Amendment. Chief Justice Edward Douglass White upheld the rights of whites and Blacks to sell property to one another and initiated a turning point in the Court's attitude toward the rights of African Americans. Years later, private covenants -- not laws -- were being used to segregate neighborhoods. In 1948, Chief Justice Fred M. Vinson ruled in Shelley v. Kraemer that private covenant agreements do not violate 14th Amendment rights and that the state's enforcement of discriminatory private covenants does violate the 14th Amendment. This ruling made racial discrimination in housing no longer judicially enforceable and established a legal precedent for future efforts to enforce the 14th Amendment's Equal Protection Clause. This episode is a conversation with Attorney Angela Gatlin Keys as we discuss the laws in regards to domestic violence and the importance of restraining orders. Angela Gatlin Keys was born in Shreveport, Louisiana. The last of seven children, she was always called the “smarty-pants” of the family (for her grades and her mouth). She first learned that she liked helping “the little people” when she was a sophomore in high school. Her father, who served as Union and Labor President at the VA Hospital, made her sit down one night and write out a grievance complaint against one of the supervisors who had wronged a nurses aid. She enjoyed the process so much that she began to help her dad on a regular basis. They would often sit at the kitchen table and hash out the complaints, study the regulations and write out formal complaints. This father-daughter collaboration resulted in a changed environment for the VA employees during his tenure and sparked Angela's interest in the law. After graduating from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, she married her college sweetheart and they began a family. A few years later, Angela fulfilled her life long dream and was accepted at Loyola University School of Law in New Orleans. She started law school with two small children and graduated with 3. At one point, everyone in the household was in school and she and the kids did their homework together at the library. She practiced a variety of law disciplines for several years and then assumed a position with the 4th Circuit Court of Appeal. In 2005, Hurricane Katrina forced her family to relocate to Shreveport where they remained “longer than they planned.” They eventually landed in the DFW area in 2014. She became a licensed attorney in Texas in 2016, a licensed realtor in 2018, and published her first book, which is based on her blog, “A Woman's Wit,” in July 2020. Angela is the mother of three and is the Gigi of two grandbabies – affectionately called Ladybug. & JuJubug. She's also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and has served as Praise and Worship Leader/Minister of Music at a variety of churches for most of her adult life.

EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Interview starts: 12:17 - Kimberly's journey in the dental field - How Instructions for Use (IFU)can be confusing for an end-user - What are voluntary consensus standards? - Auditing your setup for IFU - Is it important to order setups from the same manufacturer for IFU consistency? - How to keep up with changes in IFU - Reprocessing your instruments - A call to improve standardization QUOTES: “You have to follow the manufacturer's instructions. We have to have them readily available, so if we choose to bypass those and do our own thing, we assume the same liability that the manufacturer would.” “If you're in a practice where you've got more than one brand, how do you keep that straight? How long would it take you to do new team member orientation?” “You really do have to know every single piece of equipment so that you can be a team member and cross-trained properly.” “You can't have 18 different instruments that are in one setup that then require five different ways of processing them. That is never going to work for a small practice.” “We definitely want to do what's safe and make sure that our instruments are clean and disinfected and sterilized. So it becomes difficult if you don't have consistent manufacturer's instructions to be able to do that.” LINKS: A Tale of Two Hygienists Podcast A Tale of Two Hygienists homepage AToTH on Facebook AToTH on Instagram AToTH on LinkedIn Kimberly's Thesis Kimberly's Email

This conversation with Dr. David Hass and Carrie Armour preceded the first annual Medical Cannabis Research and Advocacy Alliance conference, to be held in March 2021 (virtually). Dave and Carrie are deeply involved in the world of medical cannabis but come to it from very different perspectives. Dave is a medical doctor who understands the science and has seen first-hand what medical cannabis can do for some patients. Carrie is an attorney who has devoted her professional life to working on medical cannabis policy and regulations. Our conversation helps put context around why it’s been so hard for many people -- doctors and patients alike -- to get a straight story on medical cannabis, and how a very mixed bag of regulations makes it hard to conduct good scientific research. We even address the commercial explosion of adult-use recreational cannabis and CBD, which seems to only add more confusion to this complicated landscape. Dr. Hass attended medical school at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University, followed by residency training at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and Gastroenterology and Hepatology fellowship training at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, NY. He currently serves on the clinical faculty at the Yale University School of Medicine and has a unique hybrid of private practice and academics. He is the Medical Director of PACT Gastroenterology Centerin the New Haven CT area, as well as the Director of Endoscopy at Yale New Haven Hospital – Saint Raphael Campus, where he is actively involved in the fellowship training program at Yale. Dr. Hass is passionate about both patient and physician advocacy and has served as President of the New Haven County Medical Association and is currently Vice President of the Connecticut State Medical Society State Council. He is a certified clinical hypnotherapist, a modality implemented to treat functional abdominal pain. His clinical interests include small bowel disease, inflammatory bowel disease and complementary and alternative therapies in the treatment of gastrointestinal and hepatic disease including medical cannabis use. Carrie Armour has over fifteen years of experience representing physicians, patients and the cannabis industry as a government affairs attorney and advocacy consultant. As a consultant, Carrie focuses on improving pain management and influencing policies to create highly regulated, compliance focused cannabis programs as well as expanding opportunities for cannabis education and cannabis research. Prior to opening up her consulting firm, Armour Advocacy, Carrie worked for over a decade at the American Medical Association in its state government affairs division. At the AMA, Carrie developed and managed advocacy campaigns to help shape and inform state laws, regulations and policies in support of patients and physicians focusing on public health improvement and protecting the physician-patient relationship.Carrie began her legal career as a prosecutor at the Cook County State’s Attorney. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Miami University and a Juris Doctorate from Loyola University School of Law. She is on the Board of the Medical Cannabis Research Advocacy Alliance, a Director on the Board of Illinois Women in Cannabis and a member of the International Cannabis Bar Association and the Illinois Cannabis Bar Association. Taking the bar exam is hard enough, but one Illinois woman took it to the next level by having a baby in the middle of the test.Brianna Hill, a recent graduate of the Loyola University School of Law in Chicago, knew she would be pregnant during her bar exam, but she wasn't expecting a huge curveball in timing due to the Covid-19 pandemic."I thought I would only be 28 weeks pregnant when I took the bar," Hill told CNN. "However, due to the pandemic, the test was pushed to October and I was going to be 38 weeks. I joked about taking the test from my hospital bed. Lesson learned!"The remote version of the test is four 90-minute sections spread out over two days. Hill said the exam is proctored so you have to sit in front of the computer the entire time to make sure you aren't cheating."I thought I felt something about 30 minutes into the test and actually thought, 'I really hope my water didn't just break,'" Hill said. "But I couldn't go check and so I finished the first section. As soon as I stood up when I finished, I knew my water had broken."But even the realization of going into labour didn't stop Hill from accomplishing her goal."I took my break, got myself cleaned up, called my husband, midwife, and mom, cried because I was a little panicked, then sat down to take the second part because my midwife told me I had time before I needed to go to the hospital."Hill said she got to the hospital around 5:30 p.m. and her new baby boy arrived just after 10 p.m."The whole time my husband and I were talking about how we wanted me to finish the test and my midwife and nurses were so on board. There just wasn't another option in my mind," Hill said. So, the next day, hospital staff provided Hill with an empty room to finish the test and put a "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door. Hill took the rest of the exam in that room and even nursed her baby during breaks."I'm so thankful for the support system I had around me. The midwives and nurses were so invested in helping me not only become a mom but also a lawyer," Hill said."My husband and law school friends provided me with so much encouragement so I could push through the finish line even under less than ideal circumstances. And my family, especially my sister, just kept reminding me how I could do it even when I wasn't so sure myself."Hill hasn't received her bar exam results, but she already has a job lined up.

Who are we? Just-Ann is a license and practicing attorney in the state of Louisiana who graduated from LSU and Loyola University School of Law around the same time the light bulb was invented. She's practiced law for more than 20 years and hasn't lost a case yet, but that's because she's a hoarder. Dan-on-Drugs is a licensed driver that quit school in the 8th grade in order to pursue his dreams of not waking up early in the morning. Somehow he became a certified IT professional, Audio Engineer, Musician, Auto Mechanic, and Published Photographer along the way, which is rather unusual for a middle-school drop out that spent his teenage years in juvenile detention centers and group homes. In other words, he's still "ignant" as hell. Anonymous is a Human Resources Professional with a bachelor's in Business Management who chooses to remain anonymous because, well, she doesn't want her employer to know she associates with foul mouthed miscreants (her words not ours). Anonymous is very familiar with employment law and conduct in the workplace. She's also an accomplished trombone player. What are we? Our podcast is a conversational, black barbershop-ish, and offensive legal show. We talk about current events, trending topics, and a bunch of random other things that probably have nothing to do with anything. We discuss both the legality and criminality of these subjects, most of the time at least. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/blacklawpodcast/support

This led to gigs in talk radio, all the while he was in private practice. For over 26 years, he has written a weekly syndicated newspaper column called You and the Law, which provides consumer and legal advice to his readers. (Google Dennis Beaver You and the Law) He practice has a strong business concentration, and as listeners will note, Dennis tells it like it is. "I never won Mr. Popularity in high school," Beaver will tell you with a chuckle! "There is a moral obligation of getting paid for the work you do, and it drivers me crazy to see good people in the Restoration Industry shoot themselves in the foot, losing a small fortune due to their own mistakes, oversights, and crooked customers, not to mention the wimp factor, where the owner is afraid of his own shadow, not realizing the power of the human voice, or, the value of getting a gutsy lawyer involved at the first sigh of trouble." "So much can be done beforehand--and later--to reduce the chance of becoming a victim of someone who will take your time, your materials, what you pay your employees, and your check!"
