In this pathbreaking work, Shrayana Bhattacharya maps the economic and personal trajectories--the jobs, desires, prayers, love affairs and rivalries--of a diverse group of women. Divided by class but united in fandom, they remain steadfast in their search for intimacy, independence and fun. Embracing Hindi film idol Shah Rukh Khan allows them a small respite from an oppressive culture, a fillip to their fantasies of a friendlier masculinity in Indian men. Most struggle to find the freedom-or income-to follow their favourite actor. Bobbing along in this stream of multiple lives for more than a decade-from Manju's boredom in 'rurban' Rampur and Gold's anger at having to compete with Western women for male attention in Delhi's nightclubs, to Zahira's break from domestic abuse in Ahmedabad-Bhattacharya gleans the details on what Indian women think about men, money, movies, beauty, helplessness, agency and love. A most unusual and compelling book on the female gaze, this is the story of how women have experienced post-liberalization India.

Dimelo Linda!!! In episode 15 of season 5 the ladies welcome Zahira Kelly-Cabrera to El Salon for a very enlightening conversation about race relations, domestic violence, afro-latininidad, and being a single woman too enlightened to put up with the bullshit of modern day dating. Also known as Bad Dominicana, Zahira is a sociocultural critic and artist whose focus is analyzing and dismantling dominant power structure from a Latinegra feminist perspective. Through her blog she has educated many on the true history of our enslaved ancestors and how the roots of colonization still permeate through modern day society. Aside from being an artist, Zahira is also a TedX speaker, a DJ, and a mother. She is the quintessential unapologetic social media activist calling shit out as she sees it. However; in this episode, the ladies not only discuss activism, they also discuss the softer side of things like love, and how difficult finding the right person may be when you have seen it all. So sit back and grab your cafecito cause this is a good one. The earliest records of herbal tea date back nearly 5,000 years, yet when Zahira Marmar moved her family to the US from St Martin, she could not find anything like the medicinal bush teas she grew up with to send with her kids to school. On the edge of tea brewing burnout from keeping her family and community stocked with herbal tea, Zahira founded Hrbvor (pronounced her-bi-vore), so that her sparkling herbals teas would be readily available in cans and to be able to more widely spread the message of the benefits of herbs. Listen in as Zahira shares the challenges and surprises of getting her creation to shelf - from the can shortage, to label challenges, to sourcing, to the inspiration behind each brew and more. This podcast is bought to you by Gulfood - https://www.gulfood.com and Meelz - https://meelz.meFor the last two episodes, we are doing a two-part special on one of the most celebrated and highly decorated chefs of our time.He is known to most as the godfather of modern Middle Eastern cooking, the one and only Greg Malouf!http://gregmalouf.comIn the second part, we now discuss all the award-winning books that he has co-written with Lucy Malouf, as well his love of the Middle East. With so many to chose from , I wanted to delve into which ones were the most tricky to write. The ones he found the most challenging, were Saha, Turquoise, Saraban, as travel books, these are an interpretation, specifically of Persian food, the taste was not the issue, it is how to make it look attractive. It was all about keeping the integrity of the dishes, but it was a way to play around with the cuisine but keeping the respect and the culture. We also talked about how he feels about Lebanese food, all about how the food has hit a brick wall, he wants to push the boundaries, a new world thinking if you like! What Greg is doing, is to elevate the food up a notch, with always keeping the foundations of a place he truly loves.Dubai came in the way of an opportunity, he came here to be close to Lebanon, and to cook in the Middle East. He opened a beautiful restaurant called Zahira, the food was a representation of the entire Gulf region, focussing on the produce, ensuring the quality is delivered to his guests. He is also a consultant, for many other projects, and is also embarking on another book. His life has always been about his love of Lebanese food, the fond memories that are discussed, not just came from his Mum, it also came from his dad who used to go to the weekend markets. His childhood to this day still plays a significant role, whether writing books or menus, it something that he talks about with a huge grin on his face.Greg has made a huge impact on the culinary world, his books have won awards, his restaurants have won major accolades, the mark on Middle Eastern cuisine is one that will influence the world over. One of the greatest and humble chefs of our time. For me, it was one of the most memorable and interesting interviews I have had the pleasure of conducting, thank you Chef Malouf for the opportunity and the time.To see what he is doing, you can follow him on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/gregmaloufchefThank you to our partners Gulfood and Meelz, make sure to click on their links at the very top of the page.Until next time, food is memories!Support the showFollow The Chef JKP Podcast on Instagram HERE

Paris, Summer 2010.Zahira is 40 years old, Moroccan, a prostitute, traumatized by her father's suicide decades prior, and in love with a man who no longer loves her. Zannouba, Zahira's friend and protege, formerly known as Aziz, prepares for gender confirmation surgery and reflects on the reoccuring trauma of loss, including the loss of her pre-transition male persona. Mojtaba is a gay Iranian revolutionary who, having fled to Paris, seeks refuge with Zahira for the month of Ramadan. Meanwhile, Allal, Zahira's first love back in Morocco, travels to Paris to find Zahira.Through swirling, perpendicular narratives, A Country for Dying follows the inner lives of emigrants as they contend with the space between their dreams and their realities, a schism of a postcolonial world where, as Abdellah Taïa writes, "So many people find themselves in the same situation. It is our destiny: To pay with our bodies for other people's future." Taïa is in conversation with renowned writer Colm Toíbín. ________________________________________________ Produced by Maddie Gobbo & Michael Kowaleski Theme: "I Love All My Friends," a new, unreleased demo by Fragile Gang. Sint Maarten, not to be confused with St. Martin is the Dutch half of the small Caribbean island shared by the Netherlands and France. Zahira Marmar was raised there. She was introduced to farming by her immediate family. She fell in love with it.Typically, this story would continue to tell you how Zahira grew peas, pumpkins and corn. However, Zahira fell in love with herbs. Herbs for seasoning? Well yes… but more specifically, herbs for teas and herbs for healing. Zahira recognized the benefits of the herbs that grew naturally on her island. Her mother taught her how to make teas for different purposes and how to combine those herbs to create different flavors and to help the body.Like many young people Zahira left her native St. Maarten to attend University. She returned home after college and decided to share her love for herbs through a unique business that she pioneered. Zahira and her team would create and maintain herb gardens for her clients. It was her way of sharing her love for farming and of course… herbs. With love and marriage Zahira would move to the United States. Again, she figured a way to share her knowledge of herbs and teas with friends. She began to brew small amounts of teas for her immediate circle. Her teas were a hit. Then it hit her. Why not create a beverage?Zahira, her husband and even her daughter got to work. Her idea became the family’s dream. After a few years of licenses, regulations and meetings, Hrbvor was born.Zahira was elated and ready for a massive launch in early 2020. Alas, like many others her plans faced the storm which is Covid 19. However, this was not the first storm that Zahira faced in her lifetime. She faced it head on. She is focused and persistent, and Hrbvor made it to shelves all across the New York City area. And yes, she delivers them rain or sunshine. Zahira is an amazing personality with an amazing story and an amazing company! This is the story… Thus far… Of Zahira Marmar.
Camila. Isso está contextualizado no movimento Me Too. Join Rishi on this direct line to Sahaja every week to dialogue with beings who are living at Sahaja right now! This kind of Utopian society is similar to the life of the Essenes, which was the tribe of Jews that Jesus grew up in outside of Jerusalem. These dialogues are in direct collaboration with Mooji and the Sangha. Thank you for Joining with Rishi (Bill Free) in dialogue with beautiful Disciple Zahira this week, who hails from France. She heard about Mooji while in Nepal in what she describes as a four-year search for truth. She was coming right to the end of her search and heard that Mooji was in Rishikesh, India. In March of 2015 she traveled 500 miles (732 Kilometers) and found her Master. She describes it as being drawn by the urge for truth. When She met Guruji it was crystal clear. While there in Satsang she had an experience where she completely vanished—there was just pure love. “I just knew there was no other place to be.” In Satsang everything was revealed. He was speaking directly to the Presence of her. When asked what's it like to live at Sahaja, she said: “Truly the experience living here is quite indescribable—truly Pure divinity, it's grace.” These new conversations are current talks on Skype that were arranged with the blessings and the guidance of Guruji and his aides. Zahira says, “Truth is. Without truth, none of this does exist. It's before I am, you know?” The heart was open and was a full YES!!!
