I have a master's degree in chemical engineering, and have worked in the Danish industry for all of my career. I got involved with the environment in connection with my employment and prepared courses for our staff over many years. This led gradually to an interest in the climate issue, which I have been following for the past some 10 years. I retired in late 2019 and thereupon devoted most of my time on the climate and renewable energy issues. I got involved with the Danish Climate Realism Association and have for the past 3 years been the editor of the Association's web page: klimarealisme.dk, as well as being a member of the Board. The web page is uniquely in the Danish language, everything we publish is written in Danish or translated.  Besides writing and editing articles for the web page I engage in giving presentations on climate issues, whenever anyone is interested. But while many marketing analytics teams prioritize gathering huge volumes of data to micro-target potential customers, SevenOne Media is bucking this trend. As Soeren Lueders PhD, VP, Effectiveness and ROI Modeling at SevenOne Media, says in this week's Business of Data podcast episode, this isn't necessarily the best approach for all companies. “As soon as you talk about ‘data-driven', [people think] it's about data collection and it's still about collecting as much data as possible,” Dr Lueders says. “I think it's slowly changing. And what we're doing as well is to look at, ‘Is all this data really necessary for what we're doing? Or, what we're doing with all this data, is it really getting us where we want to go?'” Having the Right Data Beats Having ‘Big Data' Dr Lueders argues that many companies are drawn to approaches such as microtargeting because the tech companies that sell the data and tools needed to them generally have compelling sales pitches. However, he notes that research suggests focusing narrowly on ‘ideal' customer segments can be counterproductive. “Traditional digital targeting is all about data collection,” he says. “So, you try to get as many data as possible. You try to build groups upon that data and to try to target niche markets.” “[But] when you look closely at your marketing campaigns,” he continues. “Niche targeting or surgically targeting certain groups is not really necessary for most companies because, most of the time, your product is really available for a broad audience.” “You can easily analyze this by yourself, if you just look at, ‘Who are you aiming at?' and then at the end, ‘Who is buying your product?'” he adds. “If you make this analysis [and] you see that there's a big difference, then you should think, ‘Maybe this approach doesn't really make sense.'” For Dr Lueders, unnecessary microtargeting causes many companies to neglect large portions of their true customer base. In the end, it's customers who lose out, with some audience segments receiving too many ads and others being served none at all. I don’t like spending money, and for me, this trip was a luxury. Was awesome to bring my son, Jackson (15) with me and spend some quality time with him. THE BEST: GoDaddy CEO Aman Bhutani gave the keynote Thursday. Like every CEO I’ve met, he’s very friendly and says all the right things. THE WORST: Richard Lau’s “Design, Build, and Exit!” made me angry – pay employees low wages, have a crappy office and give poor benefits, so that when you sale, it will be a positive for your employees – so it will make it easier to sell your business. This is some dirtbag stuff. Treat others as you want to be treated – plain and simple.. Other notes Some domain investors are pretty uppidy – “I won’t even look at an offer that’s not six figures” – I bet I heard this a dozen times. Good for these guys, riding their high horses. Some domain investors are amazing and friendly! Everyone was approachable, some had more to say than others. Andrew Alleman’s voice is amazing! Enchanted Rock was a lot of fun. Jackson’s favorite part was was Lisa Box’s talk on Generation Z and Jeff Sass’s (.Club) Economics of a Registry Cool Swag Bro! The closing remarks by Soeren von Varchmin were disappointing. Segment 2: How to best sale your domains via outreach This was a topic that came up at NamesCon quite a bit. James Booth talked about sending an initial email then calling on the phone. And be persistent and use a British accent, of course. I heard others talking about using LinkedIn messaging, sending letters via postal mail (snail mail). These aren’t bad ideas if you’re looking to liquidate your domains. The issue I have is that I think this will cause you to get a lower price, it stinks of desperation. Of course, perhaps I am wrong. With domains, I think people need to understand the value themselves. When they do, if you own good domain names, then you will have leverage. Segment 3: haters gonna hate I’m going to rant for a moment. Experience domain investors will tell you that your domains suck, that you’re doing it wrong, and some of them will laugh and maybe even ignore you. Do you anyways. Segment 4: Amazon Affiliate update I haven’t added any content to the site since the original 10 articles. One article is drawing some interest, though it’s a “seasonal interest” site. Progress is extremely slow. I’m working on making time to add some more content in coming weeks – probably 1 article every 2 weeks or so, and see how that goes.

#149 - Interview mit Triathloneinsteiger Soeren Otto, Soeren Otto hat eine ganz bewegende und motivierende Geschichte zu erzählen. Stell Dir vor Du wiegst einmal 180 kg, hast einen ziemlich ungesunden Lebensstil geführt und kommst wegen einer schweren Krankheit auf die Intensivstation. Was würdest Du tun? Genau die Situation hatte mein heutiger Gast Soeren Otto vor knapp 2 Jahren, als er auf der Intensivstation nur knapp dem Tod entkommen ist. Bereits im Krankenhaus fasste er den Entschluss sein Leben komplett umzukrempeln, und hatte das Glück, dass er bereits einen Coach kannte, der ihn bestmöglich auf seiner Reise zu sich selbst und seiner Version 2.0 unterstützt hat. Irrerweise fasste er in dieser fast hoffnungslosen Situation den Entschluss in den nächsten Monaten hart zu trainieren, um in diesem Jahr zum ersten Mal bei einem Triathlonrennen in Bayern an der Startlinie zu stehen. Verrücktes Ziel, oder? Dachten auch einige Mitmenschen, doch er hat sich mit der Hilfe von seinem Coach Flo Wildgruber nicht von seinem Ziel abbringen lassen. Wie er es geschafft hat, sein Leben in eine gesunde Richtung zu drehen, ob er es geschafft hat in diesem Jahr 2018 sein erstes Triathlonrennen zu finishen, und so einiges mehr, erfährst Du in den nächsten Minuten im Talk mit Agegrouper Soeren Otto.
