Jackie Dubrovich and I had a wonderful conversation about her families historical journey to to America. We also took a few minutes to share our similarities. Interestingly enough, both of us have stories to share of an Olympic experience, but from different perspectives. It was fun to reminisce about my experience at the 1980, XIII Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid, New York. These particular winter games are remembered for the U.S. Men's Ice Hockey Team's "Miracle on Ice" gold-medal run plus Eric Hieiden's five gold medals in speed skating and so much more. I was a college student at the time and was hired to work in the transportation Dept and drive the athletes and country representatives to and from the Olympic Village into downtown Lake Placid for events and medal ceremonies. Lake Placid is a beautiful town nestled in the middle of the New York Adirondack Mountains. Go for a visit if you ever have an opportunity. It's absolutely beautiful.Ms. Dubrovich couldn't have been more gracious and happy to share stories of her mother and her mom's experience traveling by herself to America from Belarus, to marry the love of her life and become an American Citizen. Just think of the bravery it took for a young woman to board a flight and head into the unknown. She didn't speak english. She had one suitcase with her possessions and fifty dollars in her pocket.Valentina, according to her daughter is one of the hardest working moms she knows. Valentina worked in a Russian food store before coming to the United States. To this day she still works regularly and even on her days off, according to her daughter, "she still works hard." Jackie recalls her mother studying, from books she took out from the local library, for her test to become an American Citizen. Jackie and her parents spoke Russian to one another at home and with other family members. Jackie even continued her Russian studies at Columbia University in New York City . As a first generations American , she completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology, Human Rights and Russian Literature and Culture in 2016.Valentina could never have imagined in her wildest dreams that her daughter would become and Olympic Athlete, let alone a Gold Medalist in Fencing. Jackie and her parents had big dreams and expectations for their daughter, eldest of two children. At times, Jackie definitely felt the pressure to be the best of the best. She regularly recognized her parents high expectations for both she and her younger brother, also a professional athlete. But Jackie got to the point where she had to be able to handle her experiences and career as a professional on her own terms. As a family, they all learned how to communicate better and Jackie's parents learned to step back a little bit to let her handle her trajectory.Jackie and her partner, Brian Kaneshige, have opened a new fencing facility in Orange, New jersey called "Polaris Fencing Center." Both Jackie and Brian wanted to be able to give back to the next generation of kids who may not be able to afford years of training and expenses, yet are passionate about a career in Fencing.Valentina couldn't be more proud of her daughter and her accomplishments. After the pandemic and the 2020 Olympics, Jackie had a tough time. Not really sure if she was interested in training for another four years for the next Olympics. "In Eastern European culture, it's not very common to talk about your feelings, but my parents did a really good job, to know what to say when I was low." Both parents supported her then as well as now.Website: https://www.polarisfencing.com/. @polarisfencingcenterSOCIAL MEDIA:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jackiedubrovich/?hl=enLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jackiedubrovich/ "Should Have Listened To My Mother" is an ongoing conversation about mothers/female role models and the roles they play in our lives. “So, geopolitics really is more about defining possibilities and getting ready for any possibility so that if the crazy thing happens, ah, I've thought about it before. And I know what I'm going to do when that happens, rather than I'm going to perfectly be able to identify the scenario.” - Jacob Shapiro, Cognitive Investments--This week's episode features a future regular guest of Taylor Made Macro, Jacob Shapiro, from Cognitive Investments. Jacob is a true neutral geopolitical analyst that approaches the world and the markets with humility and back-breaking labor to arrive at his conclusions. Chase and Jacob discuss current events in global elections, the importance of finding original news sources, paying attention to news that seems strange, and implementing a ranking system for the avalanche of information one needs to get through to do this work each day. Does Section 13 number 1 of the US Constitution, the Amendment that abolishes slavery, provide a loophole for slavery to continue today? This is Part B of Caribbean Thought Lecture 7: American Politics, with a special presentation by John Anthony Castro, US 2024 Presidential Candidate, Attorney, Legal Scholar, President of AI Tax and Castro and Company, a First Generation American who has worked hard from nothing to now a multi-millionaire, and challenging Trump a former US President. Mr. Castro engaged the students on a range of topics regarding American Politics and policy, the Constitution, Globalization, American Penetration, Strategy, and his candidacy and position on life and society. The students were fully engaged with Mr. Castro, who spent almost 2 hours wrapping with the students and answering their questions. There was one striking moment from the Lecture worth mentioning here: A student, Abdul, asked Mr. Castro, why is slavery still legal in America, citing the US Constitution Section 13 number 1 that says... Slavery is illegal in America, except for convicted Americans. Mr. Castro agreed that that is something he may have to revisit and that that may need to be adjusted to remove any loopholes stemming from that. The Professor, Rev. Renaldo McKenzie, pointed out that Slavery is illegal in the US, but that forced labor without pay is the punishment for certain crimes in the US which is slavery. However, while slavery is legal in those cases, more black and brown peoples who were once enslaved are disproportionately incarcerated and their poor realities and economic activities are criminalized which allows for their re-enslavement permitted by this said constitutional law abolishing slavery. The Class ended with prayers lead by Hanif and Vote of Thanks led by Adul. The class had over 25 participants and included two members of the faculty, The Head of Department Ms. Erica Campbell. Question: I currently reside in the US as a Naturalized US Citizen, from Jamaica. Would I be considered a First Generation American? Activity: Come up with one or two sentences that define/s Jamaica in relation to Caribbean. Learning Objectives: 1. To critically formulate and present a concept of the Caribbean in relation to its position in history which has given rise to its present reality. 2. To begin to trace Caribbean Thinking through its process of coming to be, moving beyond Independence and the tensions between competing political thought in Jamaica – capitalism and socialism. 3. To begin to develop a critical and academic frame within which to provide commentary and contributions on current issues of society and identifying media that facilitate these expressions. This lecture aims to facilitate an interdisciplinary approach to the understanding of Jamaica in relation to the Caribbean, one where the internal and personal interacts with the external. Like Keith and Keith, they agreed that Jamaica has suffered under colonialism. Yet, they contended for a picture of Jamaica that was independent of its socio-economic position and experience. Maybe as a way to forget the reality of its vulnerabilities so as to boast about something else that gives pride and joy. Indeed, although at first the students struggle to come with an original concept of Caribbean for themselves, they still sourced and provided a definition that gave them great pride about Jamaica – its size, its influence and popularity as a leading island in terms of its worldwide appeal and fame from Bob Marley, Merlene Ottey, Usain Bolt and Jerk Chicken. Nevertheless, the consensus was that Jamaica is still a society divided along class lines. This was important as one student pointed out that his movement from one class to the next and from the rural to the urban has adjusted his experience and his ideas about Jamaica, which changed his perspectives. This supports what Norman Girvan had written in his “Reinterpretation of the Caribbean” in “The Caribbean Reader,” indicating that to define Caribbean is a matter of context and perspective. The Caribbean Reader begin their perspectives on the Caribbean in Grenada, in 1983 when Maurice Bishop and his People's Revolutionary Army met their demise. This was juxtaposed with the invasion or penetration of the US by their Navy Seals who provided the support that sought the local conflicts among the peoples that crushed the nationalist and democratic socialist intentions of the nationalists. Keith & Keith, Dale Johnson all scholars of the postcolonial write in their projects how the US penetrated the Caribbean through their various machineries. To promote US style ideologies. This was not free of local assistance who were opportunists hoping to cash in as elites or representative/house slaves in the local. Like Europe's strategy of trickery, making the same deals with all the African tribes which created further chaos in Africa which led to its plunder and domination, the penetration by supporting a few created a local tug-of-war. That was evident between the Manley and Seaga governments of the 1980s, which defined Jamaica. Nevertheless, the students agreed at the end that Jamaica has been given tremendous opportunities and investments. But has squandered it through nepotism, connectionism and corruption. The students alluded to their own experiences, associations, studies showing Jamaica's corruption index, the NIA & Dr. Trevor Monroe, UK report on Jamaica being on UK crooked politician Radar as evident to support their conclusion that the country has mismanaged its investments and resources. In the end we concluded that we are not a human race in the sense that we are racing against each other. But if we think in terms of race, then the reality of the Caribbean and the black position within that racial thinking suggest that we lost the race of time. https://theneoliberal.com. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theneoliberal/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theneoliberal/support

We discuss Jamaica, Guyana, Barbados, Trinidad, Haiti, the US, the Slave Trade, and did a SWOT analysis of the Caribbean. (Brain-teaser/Activity: 1. I currently reside in the US as a Naturalized US Citizen, from Jamaica. Would I be considered a “First Generation American”?) 2. Come up with one or two sentences that define/s Jamaica in relation to Caribbean. Learning Objectives: 1. To critically formulate and present a concept of the Caribbean in relation to its position in history which has given rise to its present reality. 2. To begin to trace Caribbean Thinking through its process of coming t be, moving beyond Independence and the tensions between competing political thought in Jamaica – capitalism and socialism. 3. To begin to develop a critical and academic frame within which to provide commentary and contributions on current issues of society and identifying media that facilitate these expressions. What is the Caribbean Thought? Past influences on the Present? This is a question of being, as much as it is a question of tradition, culture, and thinking. But it is also a question about the place and peoples of the Caribbean. It represents part of a new world with new people, islands of paradise in the Americas with language, history, culture, religious consciousness, politics and economies that are inherited from its mixed past. When we hear of Caribbean today, we think of beautiful islands of paradise with sun, sea, sand, cannabis, Bob Marley and reggae music, Usain Bolt, irie people living out their best dreams, desires and life. But Neoliberalism challenges this motif, stating that the Caribbean is made up of dependent vulnerable states whose beauty is divorced from its people and enjoyed mainly by those outside of it. Further, the Caribbean represents a people who have been disrupted, detached, displaced, hybridized and made into dependent capitalist states with some level of modernity to promote consumption within the neoliberal globalized world which is largely a consumer society. Needless to say, the Caribbean remains vulnerable and open to penetration from without and exogenous shocks from within and is recreated within the mole and frame of its former masters, since decolonization and independence. These former masters are now landlords within the newly created globalized world where freed men now pay rent. This is the new condition of the Caribbean and the world since decolonization and the drive for a post-colonial world where the Caribbean had a dream of nations of freed men who were sovereign of their own lives met a neoliberal globalized world in the 1970s and beyond, where nationalists succumbed to denationalization of the nation so as to free up globalization. This was a type of globalization that ultimately continued a strategy of pharasaicalism now defined in the 20th century as the Bureaucratic Phenomenon – where established rules made through arrangements only governed the new nations and freed peoples, but the old masters and their new elitist friends of the Washington consensus were largely above those rules, as for them, the law is not a shackle, only those who are within a particular dynamic of life and society.). But the world is created to serve interests. Whose interests? Man or God? But God may be the invocation man has used to justify a space in the dynamic of life.... Creator/Host: Rev. Renaldo C. Richard is passionate about bridging political divides and bringing people together through shared experiences. In this Motivational Mondays episode, he explains why our voices may help unify people across political divides. Richard's mother's immigration story personifies the American dream. She arrived in the US with only $100 and a piece of luggage. She gave everything she had to ensure her kids' lives were better than hers. But she also thought living the American dream came with obligations. She instilled in Richard that being an active participant in American democracy is one of those duties. According to the Kauffman Index, more than 27% of entrepreneurs in the US are immigrants despite representing only 13.5% of the population. Furthermore, 43% of the companies on the 2017 Fortune 500 list were founded or co-founded by first or second-generation immigrants. This data speaks volumes about their ability to overcome obstacles, create a life for themselves, and successfully achieve the American dream. But the question is, why is it that immigrants tend to be more entrepreneurial? Interestingly, most first-gens overcome almost similar obstacles. Patience and resilience come naturally to them, and starting with nothing demands more discipline, flexibility, and persistence than everyone else. Yet, these adversities make first-gens tough and often increases their chances of success. “Public health saved your life today―you just don't know it,” is a phrase that Dr. Leana Wen likes to use. You don't know it because good public health is invisible. It becomes visible only in its absence, when it is underfunded and ignored, a bitter truth laid bare as never before by the devastation of COVID-19. I spend the majority of my time on this podcast honing in on the need to incorporate play, or for you adults, exploratory time into your workday. There will always be one more thing to do, and if you focus solely on that you miss the opportunity to celebrate the journey. You may even miss the opportunity to come up with fantastically creative ideas that often show up when you allow your mind to wander.Today, I spoke to Dr. Adarsh Vijay Mudgil, author of Let's Get It: Hustle and Grind Your Way to Personal Empowerment, a book about empowerment and pushing through no matter what. My guest this week is Hicham Oudghiri, a Morrocan-American entrepreneur. The founder of Enigma, a startup that creates a data infrastructure that will help businesses make informed decisions mostly about other businesses. One of their focus points is specifically small business lending, which is notoriously difficult. And Enigma is aiming to change that and has made some progress there - among their clients are PayPal, American Express, and Capital One. This is part two of my conversation with Hicham. And in this episode, we talk more about what Hisham’s company does and the larger context of the impact of data on society. If you haven't listened to part one - you can find it wherever you’re listening right now. We talk about how his Moroccan, French, and American backgrounds have shaped his worldview. I hope you guys don’t mind. I guess it is a reflection of the world we live in or at least my sense about it. Data and data collection and exploitation of data is everywhere and we all have our concerns, fears, and frustrations about it. But the reality is that this is how the world will be for the decades to come and we better learn to deal with it and hopefully even benefit from it. This is part one of the conversation and we focus on Hicham’s family background and how the mix of Moroccan, French, and American cultures has instilled him with the values of open-mindedness, nomadic desire to explore the frontier, and at the same time appreciation of the civic values and ethics, and how that manifests in his day to day business thinking. Camila Russo is a Chilean-American financial journalist. In 2020 she founded The Defiant, a media platform that has quickly become one of the most trusted and respected news sources in the world of decentralized finance, more known as crypto. You’ve heard of crypto. You’ve heard of Bitcoin. You’ve heard of Doge. If you’re into sports you’ve probably heard of the digital collectible sports cards. You may have even heard of the mysterious non-fungible tokens, the NFTs. It’s the cutting edge of finance and technology and to most people, it sounds like the intersection of digital witchery and Ponzi schemes and there is certainly a good share of speculation and let’s be honest unkosher activity in that field and yet, many believe it’s the future. Full disclosure, I do. But I’m not here to sell you on it, as they say, do your own homework. What I am excited to do - it to introduce you to Camila. Who is not some TikTok “crypto influencer,” she is a real solid financial journalist, Northwestern grad, who cut her teeth at Bloomberg and now she is focusing on crypto. It makes me extra happy that a woman, an immigrant, and a Latina is at the helm of the best platforms in the space. And while I’m on this fangirl kick over here... I want to tell you about Camila’s book - The Infinite Machine, which was published by HarperCollins in 2020 and is a great introductory book for anyone who is curious in this space. It’s the first book on the history of Ethereum. It’s an easy and exciting read because besides breaking down the basics of what crypto is - the book focuses on the stories of the people, who are building this future technology. My guest this week is Grace Ramirez, Chef Grace. And this is part two of our conversation. If you have not listened to part one - check it out wherever you’re listening right now. And this is where we pick up in today’s episode. Besides writing cookbooks and hosting TV shows, Grace has been an ambassador for Zacapa rum. And she shares her story of getting herself that gig. And we talk about her work in NYC during the pandemic. Grace also shared exciting news about her newest venture that is focused on women and corn.
