Originaire du Congo-Brazzaville, la Sape est un marqueur identitaire puissant pour les Congolais de la diaspora. Costumes trois pièces, pantalon zébré et démarche millimétrée, les sapeurs de la diaspora font aussi de ce mouvement un divertissement atypique. Un reportage haut en couleurs signé Tom Schneider.  Au milieu des bars d'immeubles, sur un parking des Mureaux en banlieue parisienne, Maman Clarisse fête son anniversaire. Pour l'occasion, ce groupe d'amis originaire du Congo-Brazzaville fait griller quelques brochettes. Ils ont en commun le plaisir de s'habiller, ce sont des sapeurs qui, eux seuls, ont le secret pour accorder couleurs, coupes et motifs parfois extravagants. Jean-Marie a opté aujourd'hui pour un look monochrome. « Je suis habillé tout en écologie, tout en vert. »  Mais s'habiller avec des habits de marque coûte très cher. Jean-Marie, cariste de profession, en fait pourtant une priorité. « Oui, ça coûte cher, c'est une fortune. Et si tu gagnes 1 200 €, tu feras comment ? Donc, j'ai dit : "Écoute, je fais le sacrifice parce que je veux une paire de chaussures qui coûte 300 €." C'est un système très répandu en Afrique dans lequel des particuliers versent de l'argent dans une caisse commune. Les bénéficiaires en profitent ensuite de manière cyclique. Freddy Nkouka est l'une des grosses têtes du groupe. « C'est compliqué parce qu'il y en a d'autres qui font des tontines. Ils cotisent : le mois là, il peut toucher par exemple 5 000 € ou 10 000 € ; le mois prochain, ça sera toi. Moi, c'est comme ça. » Dans la Sape, acronyme pour Société des Ambianceurs et des Personnes Élégantes, chacun a son sobriquet, c'est-à-dire son surnom. Une manière de se distinguer et d'affirmer son style. « Moi, Freddy Nkouka, le roi des Croco, je suis le premier sapeur congolais qui a commencé à porter du croco. C'est moi qui commande tous les animaux de la forêt. Freddy, le roi des crocos. » C'est que la sape et l'humilité ne sont pas vraiment synonymes. Les sapeurs parlent souvent d'eux à la troisième personne. Ce n'est aussi pas qu'une affaire d'hommes. Les femmes vantent fièrement leur sobriquet, comme Prisca. « La fille qui dérange. J'aime être sexy. Moi, je m'habille comme des Beyoncé, Rihanna. J'aime les habits, donc même si je mets un sac à patates, ça me va. »  Sur les réseaux sociaux, Freddy le roi des crocos et son ami Jerome Loufoua font de courtes vidéos du style de leurs amis. Des vidéos qui atteignent parfois plusieurs centaines de milliers de vues. Ils espèrent ainsi que la Sape soit enfin reconnue comme patrimoine immatériel de l'humanité à l'Unesco. We all have our off days, including the most beloved and successful among us. Of course, we tend to let our heroes off the hook by looking the other way and pretending their missteps never happened.   Take your favorite singers and bands, for instance. Maybe they did an album that you quietly avoid or they released a hit song you can't bring yourself to play anymore. We just pretend those inferior works don't exist and go on loving the performers who make us happy.   But this week, the hosts of the podcast "How We Heard It" boldly criticize the best of the best artists in music, because nobody's perfect and it isn't honest to pretend they are.   So during this episode they reveal some of the worst releases (albums and singles) from some of the best artists.   No one is spared. They look at the worst work from rock's earliest legends like the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Who and Bob Dylan and move on to everyone from Elton John and Michael Jackson to R.E.M. and Prince. And if that's too much testosterone for you, they pick at the worst from iconic women singers like Whitney Houston, Madonna and Mariah Carey, and they even isolate the least-impressive releases from the biggest figures in modern popular music such as Taylor Swift, Drake, Lady Gaga and Beyonce.   It's important to note that no one is saying these aren't amazing artists who've created music that millions will forever cherish. The show's hosts are just saying that once in a while even our favorite performers churn out something that's not worth more than a shrug and a "meh."   Think about your favorite singer or band. There's got to be something they did that you aren't crazy about.   Right?

This week, Corey continued discussed of Motown, albeit in a legally-deniable way, with Dreamgirls (2006). The film was adapted and directed by Bill Condon from the 1981 Broadway show, which was originally directed by Michael Bennett, with music by Henry Krieger, and book and lyrics by Tom Eyen. The film was a box office smash and critical success, winning Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actress and Best Sound Mixing. It's a star-studded cast, including Jamie Foxx, Beyonce Knowles, Eddie Murphy, Danny Glover, and Jennifer Hudson. And yet. Paul and Corey just did not like this adaptation. Corey, who worked bar at the original Broadway show and saw it hundreds of times, discusses the differences between the two versions and especially the power of seeing the show live. They also discuss why the film could have suffered from trying to satisfy its stars and expanding the story too much. And for as much as they don't agree with the common wisdom about Jennifer Hudson's performance, they were deeply impressed by Eddie Murphy and Beyonce's performances. They also discuss the musical's interrogation of respectability politics and art in the context of the early 1960s America, as well as misogynoir, colorism, and fatphobia.
