The internet and social media have transformed the way in which we hear and understand music today—and online communities and platforms from YouTube to TikTok have changed how music circulates and ultimately goes viral. Why do some pop stars have more success creating hit songs and building online following than others? In this episode, we speak with Paula Clare Harper, a musicologist and assistant professor at the University of Chicago. Harper co-edited the book Taylor Swift: The Star, The Songs, The Fans, which explores the online musical cultures that produced and propelled the image of megastar Taylor Swift. Harper unpacks how gendered narratives around "the fangirl" continue to influence which musical practices we take seriously—and how studying music on the internet helps us understand contemporary cultural power. Episode 82 of She Said It First, titled “Cardi Said It’s Up Forever,” is a full-on comedy sermon where Jerrilyn Lake (aka Indeskribeabull) and Lynee’ Monae trade laughter and life lessons like verbal jabs at a roast. In What Irritated Me This Week, the ladies go in on “sit-down air” — yes, that mysterious funk cloud that follows certain people when they hit a chair. Between jokes about “thunderclap ghosts” and hygiene horror stories, the two deliver a PSA wrapped in pure foolishness: wash your whole body, not just the parts you can see. In Girl, What Happened, the duo dives into the messy world of celebrity beefs, starting with Ray J’s claim that Beyoncé disrespected Brandy — because apparently, family loyalty runs thicker than logic. They unpack everything from old Soul Train shade to Cardi B’s “we got beef forever” energy, ultimately deciding that some people confuse “beef” with “irrelevance.” The conversation somehow spirals (as only She Said It First can) into Netflix’s explosive Diddy documentary, where the ladies drag everyone from enablers to jurors smiling too hard for the camera. “Nothing surprises us anymore,” they say — not even the idea of Diddy renting eight getaway cars or possibly a submarine. By the end, things lighten up with talk of Thanksgiving food fatigue and overhyped family gatherings. From calling out folks who overshare about celebrity drama to roasting people who bring the same dry mac and cheese every year, Jerrilyn and Lynee’ prove once again that no topic is too sacred to clown. Whether it’s hygiene, holidays, or hip-hop scandals, Episode 82 reminds us that these two are equal parts hilarious and holy — dropping jokes so sharp they could carve the turkey. Send us a textWhat makes a love song last—melody, memory, or the moment you needed it most? We put that question to the test with a no-mercy R&B love song draft spanning the 90s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s. Three hosts build rival playlists across high-stakes categories: best song, male and female group records, duets, covers, remixes, breakup anthems, and decade picks. Every selection has to earn its place, and every hot take has to survive the smoke. We go deep on the culture: why Whitney's I Will Always Love You became the definitive cover, how samples carry love stories across generations, and where the line sits between love, lust, and obsession. Expect strong opinions—SWV's Weak goes early, Miguel's Adorn and Frank Ocean's Thinkin Bout You anchor the 2010s, and SZA's Snooze and Muni Long's Made For Me make their case for modern classics. We champion sleepers like Anthony Hamilton's The Point of It All and Lauryn Hill and D'Angelo's Nothing Even Matters, and we push back on sacred cows with overrated calls that might rattle a hive or two.By the time we hit duets, male-led, and female-led rounds—Avant and Keke Wyatt's chemistry, Luther's patience, Fantasia's glow, Beyoncé's Plastic Off the Sofa—the boards tell a story about how R&B holds our best and hardest moments. We end with a full recap and a clear way to crown a winner: three playlists, your votes. The Rickey Smiley Morning Show dives into a packed mix of politics, music-industry tension, and raw family revelations, opening with Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett’s official announcement that she’s running for U.S. Senate. The team breaks down the energy around her Dallas rally and what her entry could mean in a heated election climate as she positions herself as a fighter on cost-of-living, healthcare, and holding Trump accountable. From there, the show shifts into entertainment chatter as Gary With Da Tea stirs the pot over a quiet but growing tension between Beyoncé and Brandy, fueled by whispers that Bey attended multiple Brandy/Monica tour stops but noticeably avoided Brandy backstage — a rumor the cast debates fiercely, especially as fans speculate about long-standing industry politics, sibling commentary, and behind-the-scenes misunderstandings. Later, the crew reacts to Shannon Sharpe’s emotional therapy-session confession about his lifelong difficulty with relationships and lingering wounds from parental abandonment — a conversation that leads into a reflection on how unresolved childhood pain can echo into adulthood. And closing the show on an especially heavy note, the cast discusses the resurfaced clip of Brian McKnight Jr. describing how his dying brother begged their father simply to say “I love you,” only to be denied, a moment that stunned social media and reopened public criticism about the elder McKnight’s treatment of his older children. Grammy-winning producer/composer Mark Batson (Dr. Dre, Alicia Keys, Beyoncé, Eminem) and his longtime scoring partner Chris Hanebutt pull back the curtain on crafting the score for HBO Max's highly anticipated new series. We go deep on how dramatically the music business has morphed over the last 20 years: the collapse of traditional talent development, the rise of bedroom superstars, and the new (often brutal) rules for actually getting your music heard in 2025.Plus, Mark tells the wild, never-fully-told story of how a 19th-century musical theater tune (“If I Were a Rich Man” from Fiddler on the Roof) ended up mutated into Gwen Stefani's global smash “Rich Girl” in Dr. Dre's studio… and why Dre didn't originally want to pitch them demo. If you've ever wondered what it takes to go from Aftermath Entertainment to scoring prestige television while the entire industry burns down and rebuilds itself, this conversation is pure gold.
