Health Hats Danny celebrates 50 – years with his honey & pounds lost. With gratitude for privilege, & best health thru family, media, music, travel, & advocacy. Summary Think of 2025 as Danny’s Sofrito year—familiar and unexpected ingredients simmering together. The base: 50 years married, daily saxophone practice, steady MS management. The aromatics: Cuban jazz immersion, co-founding a Personal Health Data Bank, and celebrating with old friends on Bloom Mountain. The heat: losing 50 pounds, earning $150 as a “professional” musician, and learning from his grandsons. What makes sofrito work is the slow sauté, the patient layering of flavors. Danny’s learning the same with music (leave white space), with health (five out of ten is excellent), and with AI (it changes the work but doesn’t replace Mom’s feedback). I have plenty to do on my own schedule. I can nap almost whenever I want. I‘m no better at saying no. Every day feels rich, although I don't always know what day it is. From Mom to AI My podcast about best health continues to flourish and nourish. Thank you very much. I embrace the tension between creativity and productivity as I test new approaches and media. I published fifteen new episodes in 2025, plus 32 YouTube episodes, and countless social media shorts. What do you think of my new intro and outro? Grandsons Leon and Oscar encouraged me to update them. Leon has been updating my website, as a growing proportion of people access my back catalog. Both Leon and Oscar advise me on direction, content, and strategy, especially using social media. I meet regularly with my virtual, supportive, and challenging podcasting peeps. I enjoy experimenting with AI in production to find and create images and suggest brief descriptions and section headings. My favorite prompt is “Suggest three ironic titles, brief descriptions, and section headings, a tech-savvy teen would appreciate.” I rarely use the suggested responses, but I chuckle and take an unexpected path. AI does not make me more productive; it changes the work a tad. When I first started blogging, I would read draft episodes to my mom. Her feedback was more often helpful than AI's. I miss my mom. 50 Years of Love and Privilege Roasted The highlights of the year included celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary with old friends and my grandsons. Our son, Ruben, served as Master of Ceremonies. Nine people from our 1975 wedding joined us in July on Bloom Mountain in West Virginia to tell stories. We played the Dating Game and Danny and Ann Trivia. We, rather, I, got roasted. Oscar, Bruce Kimmel, and I played Simple Gifts on clarinet, bass, and baritone sax. Readers, click the links in the transcript or check the show notes. Rolling in Cuba Another highlight was our week-long trip to Cuba for a music extravaganza. Dan Fox and Morningside Studios arranged it, and the Havana Music School hosted a week of the Havana Jazz Festival, daily lessons and ensemble work, culminating in a gig at a restaurant attended by many Havana musicians in town for the Festival. One of the tunes I recorded from the gig, “Sofrito” by Mongo Santamaria, has had 48,000 views on YouTube as of this writing. Before this, my most-viewed videos had 300 views. I'm grateful to Pachy Silveria for saxophone instruction and to Claudia Fumero and Gisselle Perez for their kindness in hosting. I worried about wheelchair access before we went to Cuba, but I needn't have. My wheelchair was no more of a barrier there than it is anywhere else. Too Many and Too Few Horns Speaking of music, I'm playing in two bands now-Lechuga Fresca Latin Band and Summer Street Stompers Dixieland Band. Lechuga Fresca is reconstituting after several musicians moved on to other projects. I'm often the only horn player at rehearsals, while we have five horn players in the Summer Street Stompers. Too few and too many. Both situations have challenges. I've never had to hold my own in a band completely; usually, I hide behind someone. With a horn section, the music at its best is controlled cacophony. Too many horns are nuts. I'm learning to lay back, not hide, drop out sometimes, join the rhythm section other times, and leave more white space in my solos. I'm grateful to my teacher of 17 years, Jeff Harrington. Oscar and I figure that I must be a professional musician. While I don't make a living playing, I made $150 this year. I average 1 hour a day with my music, and it feeds my soul and creates new pathways in my Swiss-cheese brain. Best Governance I'm in my sixth year on the PCORI (Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute) Board, focused on shifting the balance of power in community-research partnerships and in the participatory governance of AI used in research. If reappointed, I'll enthusiastically re-up for another six years. PCORI has the best Board, leadership, and staff dynamics, as well as the output, of any organization I've participated with during my 50-year career. A nod to Jan Oldenburg for outstanding coaching that kept me focused on two goals at a time. Game-Changing Startup A year ago, I would have said serving on the PCORI Board of Governors was the pinnacle of my career but let me tell you about my new career gig. For twenty-five years, I've worked with many collaboratives to advance patients’ abilities to turn their health data into useful information to make choices about their health and care. “Gimme my damn data” is a great slogan and first step, but success could be drinking dirty water out of a firehose. I virtually met my start-up partners, Tomas Moras and Marianne Hudgins in April and started working together in August. We're seeking seed funding to build a Personal Health Data Bank, an owner-controlled health data bank that promotes individual data ownership, safety, security, and trust by storing personal health data from any source and using AI-assisted synthesis to serve the data owner. Data owners' needs vary. We might need our data for research participation, health data summarization, clinician visit prep, care coordination with family in whatever diaspora, or tracking data over the years, across health systems and locations.  We have a sandbox where we are testing and enhancing existing open-source technology while we figure out participatory governance to address ethical, privacy, and usability issues. We favor a bottom-up rather than a top-down approach as we build community and services for owners and their trusted networks. I'm excited about the challenge of finding the smallest viable community that can use these Data Banks, with everyone making enough money to sustain the banks, service providers, and networks. No data broker would make money on the data. I'm revved up as I learn about a new audience – investors. The diversity of investors rivals that of any culture I'm new to. Onward I traveled to DC, Portland OR, New Orleans, and Colorado. In 2026, we booked a trip to Belize with Linda and Mike DeRosa. We are also planning a trip to Ireland and Wales with my brother-in-law, Paul Boland, I'll be sharing more about my adventures on my podcast and social media. Best Health Now Oh, I almost forgot. My health is excellent, meaning I spend a decent share of time in a state of best health. Talked to a friend, Shel. How do you answer people when they ask how you are doing? On a scale of 1 to 10, with this administration, the best is a seven. Considering the annoyances of MS, that brings it down to a five. So, how are you doing? Five out of ten is best health.  I lost 50 pounds this year after a Type II Diabetes diagnosis. Mobility remains steady, though I was slowing down before the weight loss. I rate symptoms as annoying, seriously annoying, or disabling. Episodes of disabling symptoms are rare and brief. I know how to handle most symptoms most of the time. I'm delighted with a five. Endorphins and Gratitude I'm grateful for my health, my pathological optimism, my privilege, my honey, my grandkids, and my health team. I appreciate all of you – family, friends, and colleagues. You infuse me with energizing endorphins, the best antidote to fatigue. May you celebrate the energizing moments you find in these disturbing times. Are Coronal Mass Ejections dangerous to life on Earth? When are we finally going to plunge through the sulfuric acid clouds to measure the atmosphere of Venus. And what's up with 'Oumuamua and 3I/Atlas? To find out, Dr. Charles Liu and co-host Allen Liu welcome astrobiologist Dr. David Grinspoon, aka Dr. FunkySpoon. As always, we start with the day's joyfully cool cosmic thing: the arrival at Earth of two consecutive Coronal Mass Ejections on Nov. 11, 2025, creating an amazing display of Northern and Sothern Lights. In the US, aurora were seen as far south as Texas and even Central America, and yet Chuck, Alan and David were all frustrated by clouds in their own attempts to see them! Luckily, they've each already seen auroras with their own eyes, a viewing event David likens to seeing a total solar eclipse. David discusses how solar flares can impact human technology, but that while solar flares from other stars could be dangerous for life on their planets, at this point in our sun's lifetime, they are unlikely to wipe out life on Earth. Chuck shares aurora images that were taken by our previous guest, astrophotographer Elliot Severn. For our audience questions this week, we're answering questions given to Chuck while he was presenting at an event in Erie, PA. The first question Chuck asks David is, “When we have interstellar visitors like 'Oumuamua and 3I/Atlas, [1] why are they moving so fast in our space? They seem to defy gravity [2] How can they know what 3I/atlas is made of but not the density or materials?” David explains why the extreme speed at which they are moving is actually proof that they are interstellar objects and not something else. He also discusses how we use spectroscopy to determine what they're made of the same way we determine what distant stars and exoplanets are made of. Our next question from Erie, PA is, “Is there a mathematical probability or formula to predict the likelihood of life existing int he universe? In other words, has someone developed a model to predict how many unique things need to happen for life to evolve?” David explains the Drake Equation, a series of questions that help astrobiologists assess the probability of intelligent life in the galaxy. Our last question from Erie is, “If humans find life on a different planet, would we actually understand how to coexist with the information, or will world leaders hide the truth from us?” David points out – as someone who has helped devise astrobiology policy – that the response depends in part on the specifics of the discovery, like how far away that life is. But would the government be able to hide it? David says that the scientists who discover it would be shouting it from the rooftops: “How long would it take to type it and hit send?” And as Chuck points out, the very act of the government trying to censor it would turbocharge the speed at which scientists would get the news out. The real problem, David says, is the potential of each discovery being overhyped by journalists, leading to public burnout. He brings up two examples of overhype: the discovery of possible biosignatures in iron nodules on the Martian rock Cheyava Falls in 2024 by the Perseverance Rover, and the presence of dimethyl sulphide in the atmospheric composition of exoplanet K2-18 b. Next, we turn to David's “second favorite planet,” Venus, which he has studied and written about extensively. David shows us the first book he ever wrote, “Venus Revealed” and talks about upcoming missions to Venus: two from the US, DAVINCI and VERITAS; a European Space Agency mission named EnVision; a Venus Orbiter Mission by India's ISRO, and a private Rocket Lab mission to Venus. David, who is involved with the DAVINCI mission, tells us about the plan to plunge through the sulfuric acid clouds to measure the Venusian atmosphere and surface with modern instruments for the first time. We end with a discussion of the anti-science cycle we're going through, and David shares why he thinks this moment is so unusual and scary, but also why there is reason for hope. I'll create a roadmap at the end of this season so this pathway will make sense to us (I hope!) as we piece together important parts of our success puzzle and begin to bring them to life. As we review these episodes, you'll notice that around the time of the pandemic, around 2020, our interviews took a turn towards health and wellness, and to stay on track, I created a framework of our Top 5 Health Staples on Episode 87[ii], which eventually evolved into our Top 6 Health Staples when we added stress reduction to help us to boost our physical and mental health. This week, we're going back to one of my favorite interviews with the inspiring Dr. Shane Creado, who we first met on EP 72[iii] in July 2020 on the topic of “Sleep Strategies that Will Guarantee a Competitive Advantage.” Dr. Creado is a double board-certified sleep medicine doctor and psychiatrist who practices functional sleep medicine, integrative psychiatry, and sports psychiatry. He brings all of these specialties together to uncover the underlying factors that sabotage our sleep and then treats them comprehensively, helping people to achieve their health and performance goals with sleep at the forefront. To quickly review his background: Dr. Creado completed an undergraduate degree in physical therapy, went on to earn his MD, and then completed a fellowship in Sleep Medicine at the University of Wisconsin, recognizing the huge overlap between sleep and psychiatric issues. He believes in optimization, not normalization, and devotes his work to optimizing brain health in professional athletes, executives, and anyone interested in peak performance. We did a deep dive into his book Peak Sleep Performance for Athletes: The Cutting-Edge Sleep Science That Will Guarantee a Competitive Advantage on EP 71[iv] so that, when he came on EP 72, we could maximize our time together, by asking the most practical questions to help all of us move the needle with our sleep. How did I come across Dr. Creado? I first heard him on Dr. Daniel Amen's Brain Warrior's Way Podcast, since he worked closely with Dr. Amen at that time. At that point I was just beginning to learn how to track and improve my own sleep. This conversation with him actually happened about a year before our interview with Dr. Kristin Holmes,[v] VP of Performance Science at WHOOP, and before I began officially measuring my sleep data with a wearable device. A few months after this interview, Dr. Creado reviewed my brain scan results from Dr. Amen's Clinics and told me that my brain showed the same pattern as someone who was sleep deprived (which we shared on EP 84[vi]). That feedback sent me searching for what else I could do to improve this crucial health staple: sleep. This episode opened the door for me to meet many other leaders in health and wellness and ultimately led to our deep dive into the six health staples that are scientifically proven to improve our mental and physical well-being. This was all years before our popular series on The Silva Method[vii] (still our most-listened-to series on this podcast), where we covered how to improve our creativity and innovation with sleep, and also before our review of The Fisher Wallace Brain Stimulator[viii] that held the top spot for years (with the topic of improving sleep). But it all really began with conversations like this one—with Dr. Shane Creado—on achieving peak performance with our sleep. So let's go back to March 2020 and revisit what Dr. Creado had to say about sleep.   VIDEO 1 – Click Here to Watch Dr. Creado reminds us that every cell in our body has its own circadian rhythm. When we understand this, it becomes clear what we need to do to support healthy sleep. He explains that historically, human sleep has been polymodal—people would sleep a few hours early in the night, wake for a bit, then sleep again in the early morning, and often nap in the afternoon. This pattern lines up with how melatonin behaves in the body: it rises at night, dips, and then shows a slight rise again in the afternoon. So when you feel sleepy after lunch, it's not just the food—it's your melatonin rising and your brain asking for a recharge. Key Takeaways from Dr. Shane Creado Dr. Creado challenges older sleep-hygiene advice that says to avoid naps altogether. In his words, that's “pretty much wrong.” Naps can be incredibly helpful—as long as you're strategic about them: Know how long you're going to nap Be deliberate about when and where you do it These are the keys to strategic napping, which we'll explore more as we revisit this powerful conversation. But first, let's put strategic napping into action. Put These Tips into Action 1. Keep Your Nap Between 10–20 Minutes (Power Nap) Short naps prevent you from dropping into deep sleep. This helps you wake up refreshed—not groggy—and boosts alertness, memory, and mood. 2. Use the 90-Minute Cycle Only When Needed A full 90-minute nap allows you to complete an entire sleep cycle. Use this only if you're: recovering from sleep debt jet-lagged coming off a night of fragmented sleep Avoid these longer naps late in the day. 3. Nap Before 3:00 PM Align your nap with the natural melatonin rise that occurs in the early afternoon. This prevents nighttime sleep disruption and supports your circadian rhythm. 4. Create a Consistent Nap Environment Set up conditions that your brain recognizes as “rest time”: dark or dim lighting comfortable temperature (lower temperatures are recommended) quiet or white noise reclining or lying down if possible Consistency trains the brain to drop into restorative rest efficiently. 5. Use a Caffeine Nap (If It Works for You) Drink a small amount of caffeine (like green tea or half a cup of coffee) immediately before a 10–20 minute nap. The caffeine kicks in right as you wake, giving you a double boost. 6. Set an Alarm Helps you avoid drifting into deep sleep and waking up groggy. This trains your brain to trust short naps and prevents oversleeping. 7. Observe Your Afternoon Melatonin Dip If you feel naturally sleepy between 1:00–3:00 PM, this is your biological nap window. Don't fight it—leverage it (if you can). 8. Don't Nap to Escape Stress Use napping as a performance tool, not an emotional coping mechanism. If you're lying down to escape anxiety, use breathwork or a 5-minute mindfulness break instead. 9. Track Your Sleep Response Everyone's nap sensitivity is unique. Track how naps affect your: nighttime sleep alertness mood work performance training or athletic performance If you want to dive deep, measure it: WHOOP, Oura, or any wearable can help determine your best nap duration and timing. 10. Combine Naps With Movement A short walk before or after a nap enhances the circadian benefit and clears residual grogginess. PUTTING THESE TIPS INTO ACTION: By now, we've all heard that napping is not a sign of laziness—it's a strategic tool for combating the sleep epidemic we're facing. Sleep deprivation can impair the brain as much as being under the influence, which is why even short, well-timed naps can play a powerful role in restoring our cognitive performance, mood, and overall health. I had to look to see what Matthew Walker[ix] (also known as the Sleep Diplomat) had to say about napping, compared to Dr. Creado's view, since I was studying both at the same time. If you look at this chart I've added in the show notes, you can see that Dr. Creado's philosophy helps you to nap for performance; (which makes sense to me since Dr. Creado advises athletes) and Matthew Walker helps you to nap without harming your nighttime sleep. His advice also made sense to me as he advises the general population, and the statistics don't lie. Most of us are sleep deprived. Both sleep experts believe in the power of taking naps, and they both lean towards napping for less than 20 minutes for power napping that avoids grogginess. While not all work environments are built to support this research, that surrounds napping before 3pm, there are companies that are embracing this research, you can Nap on the Job at These 10 Companies[x] Google PricewaterhouseCoopers Ben & Jerry's Cisco Potato Zappos Nike Uber White & Case Thrive Global If you like this option, you're in good company. Many organizations are already embracing future-focused workspaces with this research in mind. Arianna Huffington, now the founder of Thrive Global, has been one of the loudest voices calling attention to the sleep-deprivation crisis. She wrote the best-selling book The Sleep Revolution[xi] to highlight the science behind sleep and why our culture must change. Huffington points to research showing that naps boost the immune system, lower blood pressure, increase learning capacity, improve memory, and enhance our ability to perform complex tasks (Yahoo Finance). Companies adopting nap rooms and rest pods aren't being trendy—they're aligning their workplaces with well-established neuroscience and physiology. And this brings us full circle, because Dr. Shane Creado was emphasizing these same science-backed principles long before workplace culture caught up, showing us exactly how sleep—and even strategic napping—can become a powerful tool for peak performance. And here's where today's episode takes a powerful turn. We are going back to our MOST downloaded Series, The Silva Method, to now implement this method into Dr. Creado's tip for napping, to increase our creativity, innovation and productivity. The Silva Method & The 20-Minute Nap Where Creativity, Insight & Neuroscience Meet** Now that we know what to do from Dr. Creado's research—use short, strategic naps to support performance—the next step is to take this deeper and connect it to the most transformative tool that we've covered in our 7 years of hosting this podcast: The Silva Method. Jay Brazeau is an icon of the Vancouver film and television scene, and he's got the filmography to prove it. He's appeared in iconic television series like The X-Files, Supernatural, Stargate SG-1, Da Vinci's Inquest, and 21 Jump Street, Hollywood fare like Watchmen and Best In Show, and critically acclaimed indie fare like Eadweard, Down River, and Carl Bessai's Fathers and Sons. He actually won a Leo Award for Fathers and Sons, which is a role that required him to get in a knife fight with Ben Immanuel, get drunk, and talk dirty over a coffin at a funeral. Jay is also an in-demand voice actor whose credits are many and include Sabrina: The Animated Series and the Academy Award nominated National Film Board of Canada short The Big Snit, the latter of which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. On stage, he's starred in productions of Hairspray!, Fiddler on the Roof, The Cat Came Back, and The Battle of Georges Boivin. New NASA Missions DAVINCI and VERITAS Set to Decipher Venus's Atmosphere and History. Dr. David Grinspoon (Planetary Science Institute) and David Livingston (The Space Show) describe the upcoming NASA missions to Venus: DAVINCI (Deep Atmosphere Venus Investigation of Noble gases, Chemistry, and Imaging) and VERITAS. DAVINCI will be the first entry probe with modern instruments since 1979, descending through the atmosphere to sample gases and measure temperature and pressure, also capturing descent photographs. A core scientific goal is obtaining a precise measurement of the deuterium-to-hydrogen ratio and noble gas abundances to better reconstruct the history of water loss and the atmosphere. VERITAS, an orbiter, will use radar and infrared mapping to look for signs of active volcanism and geological evidence of ancient shorelines on the surface. These missions aim to collect detailed data that will allow scientists to walk backward through time and understand how Venus transitioned into its current extremely hot state. Retry
