DEI vs. Diversity of ThoughtI recently read an article in the Free Black Thought substack written by my friend Dr. Tabia Lee entitled: DEI COLLEAGUES: YOUR ANTI-SEMITISM IS SHOWING. With recent events being what they are in the middle east, and the ensuing hate mongering that is taking place world-wide, the article stood out instantly. You might remember Dr. Tabia Lee from our DTH conversation back in March of this year soon after she was stripped of her position as Faculty Director for the office of Equity, Social-Justice, and Multicultural Education at De Anza College, a California community college. I'll be looking to have Dr. Lee back on the podcast in early 2024, but for now, please enjoy this replay of our conversation back in March of 2023, and check out this article in Free Black Thought.Who is Dr. Tabia Lee? Dr. Tabia Lee, EdD, a founding member of Free Black Thought, has contributed to the design, implementation, and evaluation of numerous educational and professional development programs. Her commitment to teacher education and pedagogical design is grounded in her experience as a lifelong educator and a National Board Certified English, Civics, and Social Studies teacher in urban American public middle schools. Dr. Lee prepares K-12 and higher education faculty to work with diverse students by focusing on better understanding the pedagogical and curricular implications of ideology-in-practice. “When I turn on my TV and I see groups of students yelling 'Gas the Jews!'—that's not freedom of speech. That's something else. That's calling for murder. That's supporting killing innocent people. How can we be supportive of that?”In this episode, we sit down with Tabia Lee, a former DEI educator at De Anza College in California. She was fired after refusing to follow the college's woke social justice orthodoxy. Today, she is trying to reform California's mandatory ethnic studies high school curriculum, which she argues is infused with extremist ideology, including antisemitism.“I never thought I would see something like that in America—the support of terrorist groups and terrorist actions from our students,” Lee says.Views expressed in this video are opinions of the host and the guest, and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Epoch Times.

That had never happened in my entire teaching career. And not only that, I'd never seen teachers calling each other names like that.”In 2021, Tabia Lee was hired to direct De Anza College's Office of Equity, Social Justice, and Multicultural Education and to reduce the wokeness of the institution.“I just went beyond the smaller bubble to the larger community, and said, ‘Who wants to work on actual inclusion and doing some things we've never done here before?'” says Ms. Lee.But after two years, Ms. Lee was terminated for her heterodox perspectives and inquiry-based approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).“I've lost everything, basically. And that's tough,” she says. “But what I've gained is so many people coming and saying, ‘Thank you for having the courage. Thank you for raising the issue.' They've said, ‘You inspired me to ask about my equity policy. You inspired me to go into my child's school and ask to see that curriculum, and to make a public records act request if needed, if people aren't being forthcoming with the information I'm seeking. You inspired me to push back when I wasn't going to, and I hadn't in the past.' And to me, that's worth everything, because that's what it's going to take to take our nation back.”We discuss Ms. Lee's heterodox approach to DEI, inquiry-based learning, the difference between classical and critical social justice, and what it means to genuinely practice inclusion.“We're making that small impact with our students, right? But the broader system is just being destroyed and dismantled right before our eyes. And we're complicit in that because we're not saying anything,” says Ms. Lee.

"Whither the Looniversity?" - A Podcast on the Miserable State of the American University
Dr. Lee was a director of the Office of Equity, Social Justice, and Multicultural Education at De Anza College...until she started asking the wrong questions. After second-guessing the DEI and "anti-racist" policies in her department, Lee found that she had a target on her back. Although De Anza hired her to rein in the excesses of wokeness in the Office of Equity, she was ultimately fired. We talk about what happened...and whether dogmatic notions of diversity, equity, inclusion, social justice, and antiracism can be redeemed on American campuses.

Dr. Tabia Lee joins ACTA's Michael Poliakoff and Steve McGuire to unpack her shocking story of being fired from her position as the faculty director for the Office of Equity, Social Justice and Multicultural Education at De Anza College in California. As Erec Smith (another recent guest on Higher Ed Now) stated on the Cato Institute's website, Dr. Lee's transgression was "asking questions about DEI initiatives, fighting for viewpoint diversity, and upholding classical liberal values." Smith went on to write, "For these alleged transgressions, Dr. Lee, a black female academic. . . was denied tenure and relieved of her duties. As I've similarly experienced, Dr. Lee is being punished for being 'the wrong kind of black person:' one dedicated to classical liberal understandings of equality, individualism, reason, and free speech. The fact that a black person can be accused of perpetuating white supremacy for upholding these tenets and basically abiding by the same understanding of diversity indicative of the Civil Rights Movement should be the last straw for those discouraged and disquieted by contemporary diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, and a wake up call for those encouraged to implement such initiatives."

Haley Cardamon first connected with the South Bay art scene in her teens when her family moved to Cannery Park in San José Japantown. Local purveyors such as Shorty Fatz Bicycles and Breezy Excursion exposed Haley to the vein of creativity that runs through San José. While taking courses at De Anza College, she found ways to combine class assignments with her interest in art. Those projects inspired her to start a magazine that could serve as a platform for underground art in the Bay Area. The publication was called B.A.C.K. (Bay Area Creative Klub). The connections Haley made through local art and curating the magazine led her to Local Color, a woman-powered arts nonprofit with a mission to build equitable opportunities for San José artists. Beginning as a volunteer, Haley would later earn a position on Local Color's staff that deepened her connection with the community. Energized by the impact of San José's creative culture, Haley launched an event named after the city. Initially called ‘408 day', now called ‘San José Day,' the event fosters community by curating an authentic representation of San José's creative culture. In our conversation, Haley shares her experiences curating B.A.C.K. magazine, connecting with the arts community, and finding her own path in the art world, her city, and her life.Make sure to come out on 4-08-2023 for San José Day, hosted by the School of Arts and Culture at the Mexican Heritage Plaza from 12-6 pm. April 22 celebrates Earth Day connecting events all around the globe, attracting people’s reverence for our planet. A day when humanity is motivated to nourish our planet natural world so to protect Earth, our home. Initiated in 1970, this year celebrates Earth Day’s Chiron’s 50.5-year orbital cycle around the sun to return to its natal Chiron position at 8 degrees Aries. It represents a rite of passage as Chiron represents the Healing Journey. Chiron was a master teacher to the Gods but could not heal his wound inflicted by a poisonous arrow mistakenly striking him by Heracles. Chiron energy potentially migrates from the archetypal wounded healer to become an alchemist and shaman when using the experience of an unhealed wound through sharing its wisdom with others for their growth. Service to others shifts the experience of its wounding limitation through providing purpose to others and in exchange, becoming a vehicle for the self as well. Will Earth Day promote its connective reality for global environmental cooperation? We will look at the astrological charts to share possibilities. And ask if the Earth Day’s global participation might offer people a personal direction towards their internal dreams through its experience. Because we each have an individual search to develop a pathway in our personal healing journey. Joining Evolutionary Astrologer Talk Cosmos host Sue Rose Minahan will be Evolutionary Astrologers Marie O’Neill of Santa Rosa, California and Dr. Catie Cadge of Santa Cruz, California. MARIE A. O’NEILL has an MBA and is founder of Padma Life Coaching located in Santa Rosa, California. Marie has many years of experience as a life coach, astrologer, speaker, coach, past-life regression facilitator and lecturer. She is a Distinguished Toastmaster through Toastmasters International, is on the Board of Directors with TEDx Sonoma County and is an astrology mentor with FCEA. MARIE A. Pictured Above, Tony Molla, Dave Kusa and Dana Cozby. Recorded at Vision KC 2018, the panel makes a great case for the value of association membership. They say that working together, networking, training and solving the industries challenges are all the right reasons to become a member of your regional or national aftermarket association. The panel: Industry veteran Tony Molla, Vice President of ASA (Automotive Service Association) has over 35 years’ experience in the automotive service industry. He has held positions at all levels, including technician, service manager, parts store manager, new car sales and automotive technical editor, writing service manuals for the Chilton Book Company. He has authored more than a dozen technical and car care manuals for both professional technicians and consumers. Prior to joining ASA in May 2015, Tony spent fifteen years as the Vice President, Communications for the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). He also spent nine years as the Editorial Director of Motor Age magazine and Automotive Body Repair News (ABRN). He is an ASE certified automotive technician, past president of the Automotive Communications Council, and a regular presenter and moderator at many industry events annually. Listen to Tony’s previous episodes (https://remarkableresults.biz/?s=%22Tony+Molla%22) . Dave Kusa, President of Autotrend Diagnostics in San Francisco, CA has been an area resident for more than 30 years. Dave became the owner in 2001. Dave has been in the auto repair industry for more than 20 years, and he holds two degrees in automotive technology from De Anza College in Cupertino. Today, he runs Autotrend Diagnostics alongside his wife, Judy, and daughters, Katie and Kristi. Listen to Dave’s previous episodes (https://remarkableresults.biz/?s=%22KUSA%22) . Dana Cozby, ASA Membership Director at the Automotive Service Association. Talking Points: Cell phone providers signed up more vehicles than smartphone into their ranks this past year. Association dues structure would be much higher if they did not have support from vendors that bring services for the members. Which is the reason to support association vendors. Current association members are the best recruiters. Tell a friend and share the value from your association. Associations are finding new ways to reach out and communicate with their members. Associations have partners that can help with: Uniforms. Parts programs. Warranties. Insurance. Website. Wage and hour issues. All aspects to help run a great repair business. Legislative support. If your interests are not at the table, they are probably on the table. Legislative support is one of the most important roles of associations. Legislators are not expert in everything and unless industry chimes in, special interest groups will push through their issue(s). Networking at meetings is one of the most important business-changing opportunities you can ever receive. The government will get involved. Association membership helps improve your ‘future think’ so you can align your business for tomorrow. Associations make it easier to run your business because you will have resources to help you. For the majority of members, their dues come back to them completely based on participation in endorsed programs. Many time the dues ROI is more than doubled and sometimes even triple payback. PMVI discussion (Periodic Motor Vehicle Inspection). Only 15 states have them and legislatures keep eliminating them. Automotive repair would look very different today if associations weren’t fighting legislative battles in the last 15+ years. We hear Maureen Fan’s answers to those pressing questions on today’s episode! Maureen Fan is the COO and co-founder of Baobab Studios, a virtual reality animation company that makes animated shorts and films! She founded the company with Eric Darnell, the writer, and director of all four Madagascar films, and the movie Antz. Baobab’s third co-founder is Larry Cutler, who was the technical director for Toy Story 2 and Monster’s Inc. and was also the global head of character technologies for DreamWorks Studios. They all handle differently, but equal, parts of the company with Maureen managing the business aspect, Eric steering Baobab’s creative direction, and Larry representing technical. Together they have turned Baobab into the top VR animation studio, and won the 2017 Daytime Emmy for “Outstanding Interactive” for their first animation, INVASION; which will soon become a feature film! For Maureen, animation has been a love of hers for as long as she can remember. She even designed her own undergrad major for animation studies at Stanford called Art, Computer Science, and Psychology. Despite her passion for animation, she said her immigrant parents didn’t see it as a practical career path. So after college, she became a UI designer for eBay, and while she said she loved it, she still couldn’t shake her desire to become an animator. To continue to pursue her dream career, she began taking classes on nights and weekends at De Anza College, where a lot of George Lucas’ animators taught. She also started to save money so she could eventually apply for a masters program at a fine arts school. After five years, she was ready to finally apply but found that all the deadlines for the programs she wanted had passed. However, round three of business school was available at Harvard, and due to the pressures from her mother, she applied and got in. Before she completely gave up on animation, though, her boss at eBay told her to try out Hollywood and see what it would be like to work as an animator. So she quit her job and took on as many internships and jobs as she could out in L.A. She ended up landing positions as Zach Braff’s assistant and Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s talent manager. From those positions, and during her time in Hollywood, she learned that everything is a business no matter what you do, and decided to start at Harvard. In between her time at school, she took an internship at Pixar and ended up working on Toy Story 3. She said she learned that animation was a mature industry full of mature businesses, so a lot of emphasis was on decreasing costs in order to increase margins. But Maureen wanted to create something new because she knew it would be hard to compete against Pixar or Disney without a lot of money or unfair distribution advantages. That’s when she decided to join forces with Zenga, because it was still entertainment, but it was also a pioneer in an entirely new industry focused on connecting the world through games. After six years with Zenga, she became VP of Games, and overlooked the Farmville franchise. Not able to keep her hands away from animation, though, she worked with art directors from Pixar on an a film called the Dam Keepers; which was nominated for an Oscar. She continued to find new ways to innovate the industry, which eventually led to her venture into virtual reality. She said the first time she put on a VR headset she hated it because of it’s low resolution and bad pixilation. It was when Zenga hacked into the headset with their games, that she was convinced that VR was the future of animation, because it allowed her to be transported into a fantasy world. She said it also made sense business-wise because it was a new industry, and no one had an advantage. Naturally an introvert, she didn’t want to be a COO, but there weren’t any companies in VR to join. But she knew she had to be a part of the VR industry, and began to pave her own way through it! Hear more of Baobab’s story, how she found the courage to pursue her dreams, and created her own system! In this episode you will… Know how to have confidence in pursuing your dream career Learn how to find the perfect co-founders Be able to work your network to help you start your business See how to educate men on the female experience in the work place Get over what society deems as attractive in women at work Figure out a way to come up with the perfect name for your company INSIGHTS “[Virtual reality] spoke to me creatively because the reason I love animation is it takes you to completely different worlds, and world’s that are only limited by the directors' imagination…and it makes you believe that the world is so real, you can reach out and touch it. And that’s also the definition of virtual reality.” – Maureen Fan “Animation makes me feel like I’m 5 years old again when I believed I could do anything. And for VR, if it takes you totally to that world, it brings out that 5 year-old in me even more, and makes me feel like I’m invincible. Creatively it was like magic, and I knew I needed to do it.” -Maureen Fan “It’s so great having co-founders, because starting a company is incredibly emotional and stressful. You have these moments [of] intense happiness, and incredible misery, and having the co-founders there, not only to share the load of work with you, but also there for you emotionally.” -Maureen Fan RESOURCES Baobab Studios Website Baobab Studios Facebook Baobab Studios Instagram Baobab Studios Twitter Radical Candor: Be a Kickass Boss without Losing your Humanity by Kim Scott
Just recently, the news media announced the discovery of a 13 million-year-old fossil ape called Alesi. This remarkable fossil was found in Kenya, and it’s from a time period where there’s a big blank spot in the fossil record of our family tree. Alesi tells us something new about the very early evolution of apes and even shows what the common ancestor of humans and all the other living apes might have looked like. In this episode, Isaiah Nengo tells the story behind the discovery. Special thanks to Isaiah Nengo of the Stony Brook University affiliated Turkana Basin Institute and De Anza College. Because Nonviolent Communication steps out of the right/wrong paradigm and helps people connect across differences rather than get caught in blame, host Marlena Willis has found it to be one of the most effective tools in raising awareness around racism in all of her years of working on this issue. Marlena interviews Edmundo Norte and Alicia Garcia on how they use Nonviolent Communication in their work to empower others to end racism. Edmundo Norte is the Dean of Intercultural and International Studies Division at De Anza College, and also conducts experiential training in Nonviolent Communication within a frame of transformative social justice work focused on race, class, and gender oppression. Edmundo identifies as Chicano, was born and raised in East Los Angeles, is accustomed to the pronouns he/him/his, and has taught at every level of formal education, from kindergarten in Southeast L.A. to graduate school at Harvard University. He is part of the leadership team at the annual summer residential intensive training retreat on Nonviolent Leadership for Social Justice in Northern California. Alicia Garcia has taught bilingual education in East Los Angeles and currently works for the Alameda County Office of Education, providing professional development workshops and coaching to teachers and staff. In 2010 she was awarded the Educator of the Year for English Learners for Alameda County and Teacher of the Year in 2014. She works with Bay Area Nonviolent Communication and Maestro/as to create models for social change based on human connection, and is part of the leadership team at the annual summer residential intensive training retreat on Nonviolent Leadership for Social Justice in Northern California.
