In this episode, Simon takes a different approach by using a stock screener to uncover a Canadian small-cap company he had never heard of—Calian Group (CGY). He breaks down the company’s diverse business lines, financials, and key questions he’s looking to answer about its long-term potential. The episode then shifts to the timeless investing lesson of simplicity vs. complexity. Braden discusses why experienced investors often come full circle—starting with simple ideas, getting lost in complexity, and eventually realizing that the best long-term winners are the ones they truly understand. He shares personal examples, including his "stop being an idiot" moment that led him to quadruple down on Constellation Software (CSU), his best investment to date. Espen Engh Offers a Master Class on Dog Breeding Famed Norwegian Greyhound breeder and judge, Espen Engh, is back with host Laura Reeves offering a Master Class on dog breeding. “When we started out, there was a combination of two very different British strains that had proven that it worked really worked,” Engh said. “Those two breeders were at the end of their career and they hadn't mixed their dogs a lot while they were still active. But some very clever breeder very quickly found out that combining those two lines worked extremely well and produced dogs that had been almost unheard of before truly high quality. “So we collected different crosses between those two lines to combine our own strain to start out with. And I do think it helped a lot that my mother had been active in the breed for 20 years before breeding the first litter. She had been judging for many years as well. We didn't have to do a lot of the beginner's mistakes. So from day one, we were able to start at a high note. “When the breeder repeated (that successful breeding of two disparate lines) by luck or persistence, we were able to buy what we considered to be the best bitch in that repeat litter. And she turned out to be just as good as or probably better than those puppies from that first combination. So we were able to start with a really phenomenal bitch. “We had a phenomenal male at the time too. He was runner up top dog all breeds in Norway. And maybe if we were amateurs, or if my mother was an amateur, we would have bred those two together, but they didn't really fit. We would double up on faults. The male turned out not to be a good stud dog at all. And we had lots and lots of litters for other breeders. We never used him. So rather than using that top winning really beautiful dog, which didn't fit the bitch, we didn't do that from the start. “So our first combination was quite successful and we got an outstanding bitch in that first combination. And then we quite quickly realized that in order to progress, you know, now we have like two generations of phenomenal bitches, we would never be able to be big breeders number wise. We didn't have a big kennel, we didn't have the style, the facilities to breed dogs on a large scale. So we had to make a system where you can actually breed successfully from a limited number of dogs. “And I thought, why not just base it on breeding from the very best bitch of each generation? And that's what we did. When we were at the most active, we would have three or preferably four litters from the very best bitch of each generation. “As Greyhounds are very fertile, you'll get an average of like 10 puppies or nine, 10, 11, 12 puppies. Each of those top bitches would then have 20 daughters to choose from. I mean, in every litter, we would keep all the bitches that were thought were good enough. Most of them never just one, two or three. And we'd run them on until they were fully grown so we would know for sure who was the best. And selected the best bitch of each generation and repeated that. “Now, if the mother is great, the grandmother is great and the great -grandmother is great, you're very likely to get the really good one out of 20 bitch puppies, aren't you? But We also need some males to breed them to. “We also chose the second-best bitch in the generation. Remember the mother had four litters, she would be bred to four different males. We selected the second-best bitch from each generation, preferably a half-sister to the main bitch, which I call the alpha bitch. So the second best bitch, the beta bitch, we would try outcrosses on her.”
Espen Engh on Greyhounds and Judging Host Laura Reeves is joined from Norway by famed breeder and judge Espen Engh of Jet's Greyhounds for a two part conversation about Greyhounds, judging, breeding and why the Scandinavian dogs are so consistent in quality. [caption id="attachment_12982" align="alignleft" width="376"] Int. Ch. Jet's Elegant Negress, Engh's first Best in Show winner from his first litter.[/caption] “I kind of inherited the interest for dogs in general and Greyhounds in particular because my mother started up with a Greyhound in 1955 so she was the source of everything,” Engh said. “She got her own mother hooked on the Greyhounds as well. So I'm a third generation Greyhound fancier and lover. “My mother was only a teenager when she started out. She was very quickly bitten by the bug and started showing her first Greyhound all over Scandinavia. She didn't breed, however, she didn't have the possibility to do that. So my mother and I started breeding Greyhounds, 20 years after she got her first one, in 1975. And although my mother is no more with us, I keep reading from the same strain, actually from the same bitch line that was started in the early ‘70s. “There are many things that make the Greyhounds unique. And one of them is their long, long, long history and the amount of generations that have gone into breeding greyhounds. I'm quite sure that the Greyhound is the only breed where you can actually trace the pedigrees back to the 1700s. “(The first description of the Greyhound as having the “head of a snake, the neck of a drake”) is from a poem that was attributed to a woman called Juliana Burners more than 500 years ago. [caption id="attachment_12981" align="alignright" width="317"] Ad for one of Engh's multiple BIS winning Greyhounds.[/caption] Actually, she didn't exist. So it's somebody else wrote it. But that you could say is kind of the first Greyhound standard, because it describes the Greyhound, the head, the neck, the feet in a poem. Greyhounds are a very sophisticated breed. They are very close to their owners. They are about a combination of substance with elegance.” Engh has been invited to judge at the highest levels worldwide. “It certainly is a privilege. It's certainly something very enjoyable to be able to travel around, somebody else picking up your bill, to enjoy looking at dogs, feasting your eye on dogs, getting that little tear in your eye every now and then, maybe a goose bumps every now and then too, which is really one of the reasons for doing it. “But it does also present some challenges and some difficulties. Some breeds do have very different breed standards and that can certainly pose some difficulties. Other breeds, actually the breed standards themselves are not that different, but the development of the breeds are. So they have developed in quite different directions. “Obviously, and I think we need to state that from the beginning, if you are willing and able and do undertake judging a breed in a foreign country, you have to respect the breed standard in that country. I mean, that should go without saying, but it doesn't always.”

A Minnesota farmer is accused of making $46 million by passing off chemically treated corn and soybeans as organically grown. James Clayton Wolf was charged July 7 in federal court with felony wire fraud. Prosecutors say Wolf falsely labeled crops grown on his rural Cottonwood County farm as organic and that he defrauded grain buyers and undermined the nation's organic labeling system. Organic crops are grown from non-GMO seeds and without chemicals or fertilizers. They generate higher prices on the market than non-organic crops. Organic crop certification is controlled by the federal National Organic Program, run by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The grand jury's indictment says Wolf's organic farming certification was revoked in 2020. However, according to the document, Wolf continued selling non-GMO grain falsely labeled as organic through an “associate,” the Star Tribune reported. Wolf's attorney is Paul Engh. “Mr. Wolf is a 65-year-old career farmer who has never been in trouble,” said Engh. “He's led a good life and now seeks his vindication.” Wolf is scheduled to appear before a magistrate on July 22. Wire fraud is a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison, according to federal sentencing guidelines. U.S. Attorney Andrew Luger's office said the indictment is the result of collaboration between the FBI and the inspector general's office for the USDA. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Kim Potter found guilty of first, second-degree manslaughter in death of Daunte Wright.
The prosecution and the defense laid out their arguments. The jury also heard from Daunte Wright's mother and another officer on the scene. --Feven Gerezgiher reports: On Wednesday a jury heard opening statements in the trial of former Brooklyn Center police officer Kim Potter. Potter claims she meant to reach for her taser in the traffic stop that led to the death of 20-year-old Daunte Wright.Prosecutor Erin Eldridge said Potter had the training to know the difference between a gun and a taser.“We trust them to know wrong from right, and left from right,” said Eldridge. “This case is about an officer who knew not to get it dead wrong, but she failed to get it right.” Eldridge told jurors Potter was trained to not use a taser, let alone a gun, on someone in a vehicle. Eldridge said Potter's actions put other people's lives at risk, including her fellow officers.Defense attorney Paul Engh countered that grabbing the gun was a matter of human error. “Over the course of 26 years, she never fired a gun. She never fired one shot. She never fired her taser. She never had to,” said Engh.In the afternoon, jury heard from Wright's mother Katie Bryant who gave an emotional testimony to Wright's character and close relationship to his family. She recounted her last conversation with her son, who called her from the traffic stop.“He sounded really nervous but I reassured him that it would be okay,” she said through tears. Jurors viewed the incident from multiple angles, including a body camera on Brooklyn Center officer Anthony Luckey. Luckey, who was a new hire doing field training with Potter, explained he initially pulled Wright over for minor violations.Outside the courtroom, supporters offered prayer, protest, and candlelight in solidarity with the Wright family. For the Racial Reckoning project, I'm Feven Gerezgiher.

In this episode I talk to Svend-Erik Engh, a Danish storyteller, about plans to bring a Folkehøjskole ('folk high school') to Scotland. In our conversation, Svend-Erik shares the origins of Folkehøjskole in Denmark, the role of mythology in learning and the impact this form of education has on students and society. There is some master storytelling here as well, as Svend-Erik shares with us the myth of Odin hanging from Yggdrasil, the sacred world tree. While Svend-Erik and his team plan to offer an in-person, residential Folkehøjskole sometime in the future, they will be offering a 'taster' Folkehøjskole, with a focus on storytelling, online for three weeks beginning in July 2021. In this episode of The Real ResQ, we have the unique opportunity to hear a rescue story that happened only 2 weeks prior to the release of this episode. Alvin Fyhn and Hans Jonas take us into the action where they and their aircrews saved an entire vessel and every member on board. We talk about all the different dynamics of this rescue and how each time they went out, there was a different obstacle to overcome. They talk about procedures that are used normally for mountain rescue and how they implemented them onto the ship in high seas. They even joke that as each of them were backup for the other, both wanted to get in on the action. Enjoy!

On this episode I chatted with local musician Noah Engh. Noah has moved into the OKC area and in the last couple of years started to make his mark on the music scene here in OKC. Playing gigs on patios, bars and venues right up until covid struck us all and cancelled any public gathering. Once that happened Noah kept playing and started a fundraising campaign for the local bartenders called "Garage With A Cause". Playing live shows via the internet every Friday to raise money for a different venue that he had previously played at. Hugely successful campaign, raising thousands and giving back to the local community. Recently Noah has started to appear back on stage as businesses are starting to open up. He's also been working on a new project called "Uke In A Suit" which you can find on instagram www.instagram.com/ukeinasuit for more details. Had a blast hearing Noah's story and excited to have him in OKC playing venues all summer long. Not many businesses can say they date back to 1912. Sandkuhl Clayworks, out of Ohio, is a family business that has adapted over the decades and thankfully hasn’t had to use the word pivot in any way to describe their last year during these trying times. On this episode I had the opportunity to speak to Ann Engh who brings decades of experience and knowledge to her craft as a custom clay maker, extruder and kiln technician. Ann is seen as a leader in her field and is the go-to person for clay block projects that involve custom molds or extrusion on a large scale. Ann and I joined forces along with Partisans Architects to bring together a clay block job in Toronto that is out of this world. Ann also lets us in on the big award that was just announced where this project took first place in the International Masonry Institute for its innovative design. So congrats Ann for all your hard work as we need to celebrate more people like you who are normally provide the means to achieve such high praise. With that Art of Craft listeners, I give you my conversation with Ann from Sandkuhl Clayworks. · http://www.sandkuhl.com/index.htm· https://www.imiweb.org/jbcaward/· https://partisans.com/project/gusto-501/· http://www.huntheritage.ca/gusto.html Next week Jessica Steinhauser from…. https://shko.ca/ Thanks for listening and don’t forget to subscribe to the show and leave a review on Apple Podcast… ok – back to my regular gig as building something or other!

DRA, the separation of the abdominal muscles most often associated in women with pregnancy, is very close to my heart and I am so excited to bring you this AMAZING conversation on the research on #exercise for #diastasisrecti with David Larson @dmlarson31 dmlarson@asu.edu Aside from discussing what research we do have , the drawbacks of this limited data, and the physiology behind the effects of adequate load on connective tissue, he talks about his research into patient satisfaction with exercise programs. Just because as professionals we think someone is better, doesn't mean they feel that way. Bio from Arizona State University website: (see below for reference list) David is a Lecturer and Coordinator for CHS100/300 in the College of Health Solutions at Arizona State University. David earned a Doctoral degree in Health Science from A. T. Still University, Masters degree in Kinesiology from A. T. Still University, and a Bachelors degree Kinesiology from Arizona State University. His research is primarily focused on conservative treatment modalities such as abdominal strength training for the postpartum condition diastasis recti. David is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS), a Certified Pre- and Postnatal Coach (CPPC), and Certified Level 2 Nutrition Coach through Precision Nutrition (PN2). He specializes in pre- and post-natal training, youth athletic performance, and strength and conditioning and has over 10 years of experience in the fitness and sport performance industry. The skill of cultivating relationships isn't as intuitive as some people who are naturally social creatures might make it seem. The ability to build bridges and nurture connections is one that's important not only in business but in one's personal life. However, people tend to press forward, unaware that what they're doing might in fact be doing them more harm than good. Mary Engh is a former executive at a multi-billion dollar international company, and co-founder of eight/SEVEN, a nonprofit. Mary speaks to Robert "Fireman Rob" Verhelst about her ongoing work and experience at eight/SEVEN, specifically honing the abilities of people to cultivate and grow their relationships. It's time to take a look at the way you build your relationships and evaluate if what you're doing is truly working. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
John is the Executive Director at National Alliance for Youth Sports (NAYS). He is a Florida Atlantic University graduate, a former multi-sport athlete, and an avid golfer. Like his father, Fred Engh, John is continuing to expand NAYS which is "educating, equipping, and empowering youth sports leaders, volunteers, and parents so all children can enjoy the lifelong benefits of sports". NAYS has reached countless members of the sports community- having thus far partnered with more than 3,000 community-based organizations and having trained over 4 MILLION coaches, parents, officials, and administrators. Founded in 1981, NAYS has an incredible following, and are advancing towards their vision of "a future where all youth sports coaches, parents, officials and administrators are educated, and all children have access to safe and positive sports experiences".

Pål is back!

While a plastic straw ban might make us feel better, does it actually reduce consumption in the long-term? Does recycling really make a difference? As we think about waste management solutions, what questions should we be asking in terms of sustainability? What can we do to be more thoughtful about our waste and consider where our trash goes when we throw it AWAY? Lindsey Engh began her career in philanthropy, serving as the cofounder and COO of Impact Hub Seattle, a coworking space designed to support innovation and positive social impact. In early 2017, she became a cleantech consultant, sharing her expertise in waste stream and recycling economics with clients including The Riveter, Lake Union Partners and Dwehl Housing, among many others. Today, Lindsey joins Ross and Christophe to discuss the need for solid waste market development in the US—now that China is no longer accepting our trash. Lindsey shares the challenges around sorting recyclables and valuing trash as a commodity, challenging us to ask questions about the sustainability of our current waste management processes. She also explains why WTE is NOT renewable energy and how product regulations might address end-of-life ownership. Listen in for insight on recycling in a way that truly prevents the production of virgin materials and learn what you can do to develop a closer relationship with your trash! Key Takeaways [1:16] Lindsey’s path to reversing climate change Cofounder of Impact Hub Seattle Interest in affordable housing led to waste management [4:29] The three primary problems in solid waste Creation of diverse domestic markets (need buyers) Product stewardship Individual consumer behavior change [7:12] Why it’s difficult to value trash as a commodity Many additives = many different kinds of plastics Lack of tech required to sort (single stream recycling) [11:47] The possibilities around requiring consumers to sort No need to sort when China was buying for energy Dual stream bins require consumer education [14:49] The downside of recycling Only makes difference if prevents production of virgin materials No regulations around embodied carbon at end-of-life [20:00] What we should be doing more of in the realm of trash Ask questions about sustainability + make choices based on values Think about solutions in context of local communities [29:14] What we should start doing in the realm of trash Product regulation (end-of-life ownership) Consider pros and cons of virtuous regulation [35:27] What we should stop doing in the realm of trash Think about waste-to-energy as renewable WTE drives down price of oil, generates more carbon [44:07] Lindsey’s insight on the top goals for waste management Long-term: value waste, dispose meaningfully + product stewardship Create stopgap to deal with trash created in next 10 years Create domestic markets (focus on least processing for highest yield) Recycling that prevents new products from being generated [45:33] The idea of throwing trash ‘away’ Volatile commodity as availability of buyers changes Problematic in terms of colonizing places we don’t care about [49:26] Lindsey’s advice for RCC listeners Consider relationship with things throw away Make sure recyclables clean + well-sorted Tour local transfer station and/or landfill Connect with Ross & Christophe Nori Nori on Facebook Nori on Twitter Nori on Medium Nori on YouTube Nori on GitHub Nori Newsletter Email hello@nori.com Nori White Paper Subscribe on iTunes Carbon Removal Newsroom Resources Follow Lindsey on Instagram Impact Hub Seattle EPA Waste Reduction Model Seattle’s Plastic Bag Ban Seattle’s Plastic Straw Ban Spokane’s WTE Facility ‘In San Francisco, Making a Living from Your Billionaire Neighbor’s Trash’ in The New York Times

In this episode, Joel talks with Andreas Engh Seland, phd candidate in philosophy of religion at Lund University, Sweden. Writing on Sören Kierkegaard's book on the faith of Abraham, Fear and Trembling, Seland develops a innovative concept of "suspense" as a means of explicating a tricky text full of repetitions, paradoxes and references to the philosophy of Hegel.

The episode n°4 of @sciencemug's podcast tells you, in Engh?ish, that a pig's pheromone, the androstenone, can calm excessively anxious super barking and jumping dogs when sprayed on them. The discovery, made by a group of researchers of the Texas Tech University, has been published in the journal "The Professional Animal Scientist". (the twin journal of "The Amateur Plant Theologian", cousin of the magazine "The semi-pro quasi-experiment planner"). Read the text here: http://goo.gl/5vyLA3 Ciaz! SM
The third episode of @sciencemug's podcast tells you, in Engh?ish, that size does matters, as usual. At least when it comes to brains and the ability of surviving predators' attacks and when you are a female, hence not a male, of Poecilia reticulata, a species of small tropical fishes called guppies. The discovery, made by a group of scientists from the universities of Stockholm and Vienna, is reported in the journal Ecology letters, right after the one of a Malaysian cayman that reads the tarot cards (naaa, just joking, it can only play black jack...)
