Heath Ledger's preparation for and disappearance into his movie roles is legendary, and it's what helped him play repressed cowboys, junkies, and maniacal clowns equally well. His research led him to junkies who taught him how to properly shoot up using a stolen prosthetic arm and fake blood, and to a personal diary full of cut-and-paste madness. The paparazzi, however, mocked Heath's method, and took their public quarrel with him to duplicitous lengths. In this episode, I'm joined by Richard Handley, author of The Hawks Are Not Dying, a novel rooted in real events that helped shape modern Ojai, which could have easily looked very different.Set in the early 1980s, The Hawks Are Not Dying follows a man who finds purpose — and unexpected romance — while joining a scrappy coalition of activists determined to stop a shopping-center development from destroying the meadows he loves. Along the way, the story brings to life many of the real people who stood up to overdevelopment and helped protect Ojai from becoming another Southern California sprawl, threatened by freeways, gypsum and uranium mines, and unchecked growth. In our conversation, Richard reflects on the preservation battles that defined an era, the personalities who shaped Ojai's environmental ethic, and how storytelling can carry civic memory forward. We also explore his work in Western Australia, where he developed education programs with Aboriginal communities — an experience that deepened his understanding of land, culture, and stewardship. We did not talk about Heath Ledger, barramundi fishing or the Great Barrier Reef. This episode is a meditation on activism, love of place, and the quiet heroism of people who say “no” when it matters most. Before cementing her status as a bonafide comedic talent, Rose Byrne (Bridesmaids, Neighbors) was known for dramatic roles. The Australian actor combines those skills in the tense comedy-drama, If I Had Legs I'd Kick You, for which she just won a Golden Globe. During last year's Toronto International Film Festival, Rose sat down with Tom Power to discuss the film and what it was like co-starring with Conan O'Brien in his first serious acting role. She also told us how she broke out of her shell as a shy kid, how she and Heath Ledger helped each other out as young Australians in Hollywood, and what she thinks about her one line from Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones.

Best of 2025: How Vincent Fantauzzo's life was saved by love and painting

When artist Vincent Fantauzzo was a boy he was a street-fighting petty criminal with dyslexia and a blazing talent for drawing. He escaped jail time, and grew up to become one of Australia's most well-known portrait artists.VIncent Fantauzzo is one of Australia's most successful portrait artists. For his luminous, photo-realistic paintings he's won the People's Choice Award at the annual Archibald Prize more than any other artist. He's also won the Moran National Portrait Prize twice, once with a painting of his friend, filmmaker Baz Luhrmann, and the second time with a painting of his wife, actor Asher Keddie. All the success is a long way from his upbringing in Broadmeadows in Melbourne, when at times it seemed like he was going to end up in jail, or dead.Vincent struggled so badly with dyslexia that he developed elaborate rituals to avoid writing at school, which is partly how he came to drawing. He became a street-fighting petty criminal and he was kicked out of school at 14 and was drawn into a violent world where he had to be extraordinarily streetwise to survive.Vincent still carries the scars of surviving his childhood into the big, beautiful life he's built for himself as one of Australia's most well-known artists. This episode of Conversations explores origin stories, social disadvantage, parenting, father son relationships, boxing, learning disabilities, struggling in school, Hollywood, the art world, Heath Ledger, Kim Ledger, Batman, family, family dynamics, life story, art, portraits, painting, juvenile crime, drug dealing, hot houses, brothers.Unveiled, written with Craig Henderson, is published by Penguin. To binge even more great episodes of the ‘Conversations podcast' with Richard Fidler and Sarah Kanowski go the ABC listen app (Australia) or wherever you get your podcasts. Join Aaron & Greg as they revisit Gil Junger's modern retelling of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, starring Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight, A Knight's Tale) in his breakout role as the rebellious and charming Patrick Verona, and Julia Stiles (Save the Last Dance, Dexter) as fiercely independent Kat Stratford. Nol-vember continues this week on We Drink & We Watch Things as we charge headlong into what is maybe the greatest superhero film ever made: The Dark Knight (2008). Forget the cape and cowl - this is a sprawling, high-stakes crime epic that pits the fragile notion of order against the pure, terrifying force of chaos. Grab a drink and prepare to discuss a film that still defines cinematic villainy. This week, we are dissecting Heath Ledger's legendary, Oscar-winning performance as the Joker, who isn't interested in money or power, but in proving that all of society's rules are meaningless. We'll be talking about the film's philosophical backbone, exploring the tragic fall of Harvey Dent, and debating whether Batman's moral line—that he "won't kill"—is a strength or a dangerous liability when facing a truly limitless enemy. It's a discussion about necessary lies, the burden of heroism, and the ultimate sacrifice required to save Gotham's soul.If you love deeply layered crime thrillers, philosophical debates masked as superhero movies, or just want to appreciate the absolute brilliance of a film that transcends its genre, this is the episode you've been waiting for. We're blending our analysis of its narrative depth with our usual casual banter, making this an essential chapter in our month dedicated to Christopher Nolan. This episode VIDEO is live on YouTube AND Spotify!Follow us on Instagram and TikTok to get ep sneak peaks and find out what's coming next. Nestor Carbonell Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Nestor Carbonell has it all. A beautiful wife, great kids, a wildly successful career spanning three plus decades, which is hotter than ever, with two hit shows streaming (The Morning Show on Apple TV, and Pulse on Netflix), a brand new film in theatres (Motherland), a sparkling Emmy award (for Shōgun), his first feature about to be cast, an episode of Law & Order to direct, and a beard being grown for a greenlit new movie he's soon to shoot. That's just part of the story. What he also has in abundance is humility, accessibility, warmth, kindness, sweetness, and he's hotter than ever to gaze upon, too. Those insanely dark-rimmed eyes, which he swears are natural, sans “paint” (my new favorite word for make-up), thank you, Nestor, are awfully fun to feast upon, too. He's the whole enchilada, and I say that with all due respect, and the Harvard grad is due a lot! We've been having a Nestor Carbonell film festival over here for the past week, and barely scratched the surface. Last night alone, we watched Motherland, also available to rent at home, The Dark Knight, which I hadn't seen since it dropped, what a star-studded extravaganza that is, with a brilliant Heath Ledger in his final film, and, the latest episode of The Morning Show, where Nestor's Yanko continues to evolve before our eyes, as does the show. Tonight we'll get back to our Lost binge; we haven't even gotten to Nestor's run yet. I'm exhausted just watching the guy. How the hell does he manage it all? This conversation spoke to Nestor's easy, self-effacing generosity of spirit. We touched on his parents, his background, early education, that crazy college, finding acting, how he broke in and through, the work, some tricks of his trade, meeting his bride of two decades, Shannon Kenny, her talents, can't wait to read her All Is Not Lost (on order!), managing career and kids, the sacrifices, getting through the pandemic, how it's changed him, the work, and the world, and, at each turn, he asked about me––quite a guy. As versatile and compelling as he is on screen, is as focused and charming as he is in life. Nestor's an anomaly. The total package. If something's missing, I missed it. How fun to keep watching and looking. Movie of the Year: 1999The Limey (feat. Adam Kempenaar from Filmspotting)Why The Limey Still Packs a PunchIn this episode of Movie of the Year, the Taste Buds turn their sights on The Limey (1999), Steven Soderbergh's sharp revenge thriller about grief, family, and memory. Mixing classic crime tropes with experimental editing, The Limey is both a gripping noir and an impressionistic meditation on loss. With Terence Stamp delivering a career-defining performance, the film remains one of Soderbergh's most daring works.1960s vs 1990s in The LimeyAt the heart of The Limey lies a conversation between two eras. Terence Stamp's Wilson—a hardened ex-con from the swinging London of the 1960s—arrives in neon-soaked Los Angeles of the 1990s to uncover the truth about his daughter's death. The Taste Buds discuss how the film contrasts the ideals, aesthetics, and morality of these decades, using Wilson's journey as both a cultural clash and a generational reckoning.Steven Soderbergh's Directing Style in The LimeyKnown for pushing boundaries, Steven Soderbergh infuses The Limey with fractured editing, nonlinear storytelling, and the haunting use of flashbacks. The Taste Buds break down how these stylistic choices elevate a standard revenge plot into a hypnotic piece of cinema. They also explore how The Limey connects to Soderbergh's other 1999 classic, Out of Sight, and how his experimental style paved the way for his 2000s successes.Family, Revenge, and The Limey's Emotional CoreWhile The Limey is structured like a thriller, its true heartbeat lies in themes of family and redemption. Wilson's grief over his daughter and his desperate search for answers give the film unexpected emotional weight. The Taste Buds explore how family drives the story forward, turning vengeance into something deeply human and heartbreaking.Guest Panelist: Adam Kempenaar from FilmspottingJoining this week's episode is Adam Kempenaar, host of the long-running podcast Filmspotting. Adam brings decades of cinephile experience and critical insight to the discussion, offering a deeper look at Soderbergh's influence and the lasting cultural relevance of The Limey. His perspective helps connect the film to both classic noir traditions and contemporary cinema.Listen to Filmspotting here!Bonus Segment: 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)The Taste Buds balance The Limey's brooding intensity with a bonus discussion of 10 Things I Hate About You, the teen comedy that reimagines Shakespeare for the 1990s. They break down the film's clever script, breakout performances from Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles, and how it epitomizes the teen movie boom of the decade. Together, the two films showcase the remarkable range of 1999 cinema.FAQ About The Limey Podcast EpisodeWhat is The Limey (1999) about? The film follows Wilson (Terence Stamp), an ex-con who travels to Los Angeles to investigate his daughter's mysterious death. Why is Steven Soderbergh's style in The Limey unique?Through nonlinear editing, impressionistic flashbacks, and tonal shifts, Soderbergh transforms a revenge story into an artful meditation on grief and memory. Why is family important in the film?Wilson's pursuit of justice is rooted in his...

Also discussed: -The foreplay-to-kiss ratio in Crazy, Stupid, Love ("an hour and ten minutes of foreplay, as usual") -Whether you'd need a therapist or a friend to convince you to hook up with Ryan Gosling -The universal truth that "they don't make sweaters like they used to" -A full meltdown over Andie Anderson's yellow dress -Billy Crystal's unexpected sex appeal in When Harry Met Sally -Why the kiss in 10 Things I Hate About You just hits harder when there's paint on your face Whether you're Team Gosling, Team Ledger, or just here to yell about how unrealistic diamond ad pitches are, this is the romcom breakdown you didn't know you needed. 00:00-02:31 We Dressed Like Our Fave Rom Com Leads 02:32 The 'Judy Greer Award' For Best Rom Com Friend 06:17 Rom Com's Worst Characters Ever 08:34 Throbbiest Heartthrob and Best Dressed 19:41 Best and Worst Dressed Rom Com Characters 22:14 This Is The Best Rom Time Of All Time! #RomComRanking #BestRomcoms #RyanGosling #HeathLedger #HowToLoseAGuyIn10Days #10ThingsIHateAboutYou #WhenHarryMetSally #CrazyStupidLove #RomComAwards #BetchesVideoClub #RomComObsessed #RomComCore #RomComRewatch #ChickFlicksForever #RomComHallOfFame #BestRomComMoments #IconicMovieKisses #MovieBesties #RomComBreakdown #VideoClubAwards #WhenHarryMetSally #10ThingsIHateAboutYou #HowToLoseAGuyIn10Days #CrazyStupidLove #RyanGoslingEra #HeathLedgerForever #AndieAnderson #BillyCrystalAppreciation #EmmaStoneStan #BetchesVideoClub #BetchesContent #YouTubeComedy #MovieTok #PopCultureDebate #NostalgiaRewatch #GirlsWhoLoveMovies #FunnyMovieReview #GenZMovieTakes #HotTakesOnly #stevecarrell #kathrynhahn #megryan Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode, I spoke with author Samuel Garza Bernstein about his book "Cesar Romero: The Joker Is Wild". Dynamic and debonair, Cesar Romero was best known for creating the role of the Joker in the 1960s Batman television series. As the first actor to play Batman and Robin's villainous nemesis, Romero established the character's giddy, manic tone and the distinctive laugh that subsequent actors like Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, and Joaquin Phoenix would use as the starting points in their own Oscar-nominated (Nicholson) and Oscar-winning (Ledger and Phoenix) performances. As a closeted gay man of Latin American descent, Romero gracefully faced many personal challenges while maintaining his suave public image and starring opposite legends ranging from Shirley Temple to Marlene Dietrich, Carmen Miranda to Frank Sinatra, and Kurt Russell to Jane Wyman.Forgotten Hollywood is on Facebook.Forgotten Hollywood book series is on Amazon

Tish and Brandi are welcoming a very special guest this week: Tish's stepson, Joe Purcell! He might be new to acting, but thanks to his roles in viral vertical films (and a few steamy scenes), Joe is blowing up on TikTok… without even having the app. They dive into Joe's unexpected journey into acting (shoutout Heath Ledger), and why he's keeping his real life low-key despite the growing buzz online. They get into everything from growing up with famous parents (hi, Dom Purcell!), to why Joe waited five years to rejoin Instagram, to the struggles of dating as a "heartthrob in Hollywood." Joe opens up about navigating intention in relationships and what he's learned from his dad's career choices. Plus, a hard-hitting Dear MT, a slightly concerning LaCroix obsession, and a not-so-boring round of The Boring Game. It's heartfelt, hilarious, and a little BTS of a star in the making. Stoners, meet Joe. Don't forget to rate, review, and follow the show! Verdict with Ted Cruz

Meet my friends, Clay Travis and Buck Sexton! If you love Verdict, the Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show might also be in your audio wheelhouse. Politics, news analysis, and some pop culture and comedy thrown in too. Here’s a sample episode recapping four Tuesday takeaways. Give the guys a listen and then follow and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. Senate Passes Big, Beautiful Bill In Hour 1 of the Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show, the hosts deliver a dynamic and timely breakdown of the Senate’s passage of the “Big Beautiful Bill”, a sweeping legislative package poised to reshape the political and economic landscape. Passed by a narrow 51-50 margin with Vice President JD Vance casting the tie-breaking vote, the bill now awaits President Donald Trump’s signature, expected by July 4th. This hour dives deep into the bill’s key provisions, including a $5 trillion debt ceiling increase, hundreds of billions allocated for border security and national defense, and a projected $3.3 trillion budget deficit increase through 2034. The hosts analyze the political drama surrounding the bill’s passage, highlighting opposition from Republican Senators Rand Paul, Tom Tillis, and Susan Collins, and the expected reconciliation process in the House. Lefty Language Games Analysis of the Senate’s passage of the “big, beautiful bill,” a major piece of legislation expected to stimulate economic growth, provide tax certainty, and enhance border security. The hosts emphasize the bill’s imperfections but argue its net benefits outweigh its flaws, especially in the context of a government that often lacks the political will to reduce spending. A significant portion of the hour is dedicated to the unsustainable trajectory of federal spending, with references to past efforts by figures like Ross Perot, Senator Ron Johnson, and Senator Rand Paul. The hosts critique both parties for failing to curb entitlement growth and highlight how slowing the rate of spending increases is misleadingly labeled as “cuts.” They also explore how artificial intelligence and productivity gains could potentially offset fiscal challenges, offering a rare optimistic note on economic innovation. The Art of the Possible The Big Beautiful Bill now heads back to the House, where the Freedom Caucus may voice opposition, but it’s expected to reach President Donald Trump’s desk for signature before the July 4th holiday. A major highlight of the hour is President Trump’s visit to “Alligator Alcatraz” in Ochopee, Florida, a remote airstrip facility intended for detaining and deporting illegal immigrants. Trump’s remarks emphasized deterrence, warning migrants against fleeing into the Everglades. The segment underscores the administration’s tough stance on immigration and sanctuary cities, with speculation that legal challenges may arise from cities defying federal deportation orders. Best Movie of the 21st Century? Clay and Buck debate the best movies of the 21st century, referencing a recent New York Times list. Films like The Dark Knight, There Will Be Blood, No Country for Old Men, and The Pianist are discussed, with particular praise for Heath Ledger’s iconic performance as the Joker. The conversation also includes listener favorites and humorous disagreements over ice cream flavors—particularly pistachio—and nostalgic TV shows like Knight Rider and The Dukes of Hazzard.
