We present this week, since it's the last Sunday of the month, a new feature: OBSCURE OLD-TIME RADIO THEATRE! These may or may not be familiar to you, but we're betting that most of you haven't heard of these before. And so, depending on how much bandwidth we have left over at the end of a month, we'll be bringing you a handful of basically unknown radio shows from the Golden Age, and more than likely from a country other than the U.S. of A. We continue with...  HOLLYWOOD STAR PLAYHOUSE, "A Question of Time": this series is American-made, and this episode stars Anne Baxter. Each half-hour program featured, as the title implies, a different Hollywood star. We're not sure of the air date of this episode, but since it was sponsored by Bromo-Seltzer, it was sometime between 1950 and 1951.

Barbara explains how she first became fascinated with Lola through her research while writing a novel about Frida Kahlo, and why del Río stood out as a striking contrast to Kahlo's bold, shocking public persona. We explore Lola's elegance, discipline, resilience, and the obstacles she faced moving between Mexico and Hollywood during a period shaped by silent films, the arrival of “talkies,” studio marketing, and changing political attitudes in America. We also discuss how Hollywood attempted to “rebrand” del Río for US audiences, the realities of the era's anti-miscegenation attitudes on screen, and how del Río navigated identity, roles, and opportunity as the industry changed. Unser heutiger Gast, The Duc Ngo, kommt 1974 in Hanoi zur Welt. Er ist 5, als er mit seiner Familie aus Vietnam flieht. Auf einem viel zu kleinen Boot, das kentert, in mehreren beschwerlichen Etappen, bis die Familie No in Deutschland ankommt. "2 Wochen heulen, danach war alles fein", so beschrieb Duc sein Ankommen in diesem für ihn komplett neuen Leben. Heute, großer Sprung nach vorne, ist dieser Junge von damals, der Sport liebte und sich Neuem gegenüber immer schon aufgeschlossen zeigte, heute also zählt The Duc Ngo zu den erfolgreichsten und innovativsten Gastronomen des Landes. Kulinarisch gesehen regiert er ein Imperium, Locals und Hollywoodstars versuchen gleichermaßen, in seinen 14 Restaurants einen Tisch zu bekommen, falls das als Referenz durchgeht. Duc selbst wirkt froh darüber, ansonsten aber ziemlich unbeeindruckt von diesem ganzen Hype. Zudem scheint er ständig das nächste Projekt im Kopf zu haben. Many actors have brought Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe to life. Humphrey Bogart, Elliot Gould, Danny Glover, and Liam Neeson are just a few of the men to portray the legendary private eye on the big and small screens, but today we'll hear four actors who played Marlowe on radio. First, Van Heflin is Marlowe in a radio adaptation of Chandler's "Red Wind" (originally aired on NBC on June 17, 1947). Next, Robert Montgomery reprises the role of Marlowe as The Lux Radio Theatre adapts "Lady in the Lake" (originally aired on CBS on February 9, 1948). Dick Powell steps back into the gumshoe's shoes in a Hollywood Star Time presentation of "Murder, My Sweet" (originally aired on CBS on June 8, 1946). Finally, Gerald Mohr proves "crime is a sucker's road" in "The Uneasy Head" (originally aired on CBS on June 6, 1950).
