Home Ownership Headaches and a Nevada Dream Reverend Blake Rubie opens the Labor Day weekend broadcast not with scripture but with real estate, telling listeners about the San Antonio house he has owned since 2010, bought new for one hundred forty two thousand dollars and now appraised by the Bexar County Appraisal District at roughly two hundred thirteen thousand, with about ninety five thousand left on a low VA mortgage under nine hundred dollars a month. He weighs the headaches of ownership, aging air conditioning, roof shingles that may need replacing soon, against the freedom of renting where a landlord handles repairs. His wife, he says, would rather stay in San Antonio but would follow if he insisted. A Decade of Family Strain Begins The story turns to family history. Rubie recalls that his wife Jackie moved into the house in 2011, followed that November by her daughter Eva and three grandchildren, and that trouble started almost immediately: no chores, no bills paid, shoes left on, rudeness toward him. He says the breaking point came when Eva, angry that he raised his voice at her crying baby, told him she would knock him out. He filed a forcible detainer with the Bexar County Justice of the Peace, beginning an eviction process that stretched nearly a year through court, an appeal, and a writ of possession before a sheriff finally arrived. Eva and the children left for Maryland, crowding into a relative's one bedroom apartment, then for Delaware, where similar conflicts arose. When they had nowhere else to go, Jackie asked if they could return, and though Rubie suggested the homeless services agency Haven for Hope instead, he agreed to let them move back in. Renewed Conflict and a Second Eviction Rubie describes years of uneasy coexistence broken by occasional flare ups, including a moment last year when his teenage granddaughter Malia screamed that he would never be her grandfather and later told him she hoped he would die. He again filed a forcible detainer but cancelled it when travel plans for a family reunion and a trip to Japan got in the way. Selling the House and Waiting on Goldie Rubie explains the plan taking shape around the dog, Goldie, an elderly pit bull terrier the family had planned to keep together until she passed before separating, until his daughter in Tokyo, Cathy, and her fiance David urged him to act sooner. Jackie negotiated an extra ninety days, pushing the move out deadline to November 30, though Rubie doubts they will leave on time and expects the case to return to court, then to a writ of possession, much as it did before. He describes the repairs the house will need before he can sell it to the home buying company Opendoor, including new carpet, painting, water damaged ceilings, and counters, estimating twenty to forty thousand dollars in cosmetic work once the family's belongings and years of clutter are cleared out. He plans to give his grandson Malik several thousand dollars toward a new place, keep the family's dog despite its barking, and finally retire somewhere quiet, ideally a fifty five plus community with a pool. A Life Lived Across Many Borders Turning to his own history, Rubie traces a well traveled life. He recalls trips from Ottawa, Canada down through the American and Mexican borders to Guadalajara, Mexico, where his family lived and where he finished high school after his father won a court case and bought him a car during a stop in San Antonio in 1972. He describes joining the army out of Las Vegas during the Falklands War, needing a waiver for a 1979 DUI, and serving nearly forty four years between active duty, contractor work, and civilian service. He calls his son, now thirty two and living in Burbank with Terri Snell, whom Rubie describes as an actress from the Home Alone films, the true blessing of his life, recounting that he donated a kidney to him in 1995 at Stanford's Children's Hospital and that his son received a second transplant in 2014 from a friend's mother in Ohio. Rubie says he has lived in twenty five places over his lifetime and is booked to visit his son again in December. Veganism, Compassion, and a Closing Prayer The episode closes on themes closer to the show's usual ground. Rubie describes being vegan for twenty seven years, sober from alcohol since 1988, and content letting his wife Jackie use hemp derived THC drinks or marijuana gummies for her health, while insisting he will never smoke or drink again himself. He mentions singing for the Wounded Warriors and in a choir, and calls hosting his radio show one of the best things he has done. Despite his frustration with his stepdaughter's family, he says he still buys his granddaughter ribeye steaks and would never refuse to help feed her. Episode Summary After a misunderstanding turns Reacher into Philadelphia's most wanted man, he spends much of the episode doing what Reacher does best: escaping situations that should probably be impossible to escape. Meanwhile, Jacob, Tamara, and Plum recover the flash drive Anna mailed before her death, along with her phone, but their attempt to finally get some answers turns into a violent confrontation with Lila and Amisha. Jacob gets his first genuine opportunity to strike back at the people responsible for his sister's death. The recovered evidence also starts bringing the larger conspiracy into focus. A photograph connects Congressman Sampson to a disgraced Indonesian general, but Reacher suspects another person in the image may actually be more important to the mystery. Anna's phone also gives the group stronger evidence tying Lila directly to the killings. By the end, Reacher and Tamara's investigation leads them toward another confrontation while Jacob is taken hostage, leaving Tamara with a pretty awful decision to make. And this one definitely supports the subtitle vibe we were talking about: there's plenty of entertaining Reacher insanity here, but the season is getting increasingly dependent on everyone accepting some wildly convenient and increasingly ridiculous shit to keep the plot moving. Episode Summary Hal and John investigate a deadly shooting in an attempt to prove that an alien force was responsible, with their investigation increasingly pointing toward one of the Green Lantern Corps’ oldest mistakes: the Manhunters. The episode digs deeper into the mystery surrounding Rushville while separating Hal and John enough to develop both characters individually. Sheriff Kerry also reveals that she originally came from Gotham, quietly expanding the show’s connections to the larger DCU.And then the episode drops the considerably bigger comic-book bomb: Sinestro, played by Ulrich Thomsen. The imprisoned former Lantern is positioned almost like the show’s Hannibal Lecter, someone Hal doesn’t trust but may need because Sinestro understands both Hal and the threat they are facing better than almost anyone. AIR DATE & NETWORK FOR: GILMORE GIRLS (SEASON 2 EPISODE 15) February 26, 2002 | The WB CAST & CREW OF: GILMORE GIRLS (SEASON 2 EPISODE 15) Lauren Graham as Lorelai Gilmore Alexis Bledel as Rory Gilmore BRAN'S GILMORE GIRLS (SEASON 2 EPISODE 15) SYNOPSIS Lorelai was cleaning her gutters when she hurt her hand. She slapped a Band-Aid on it and refuses to go to the doctor. They get to Luke's, but Luke is nowhere to be found. To make matters worse, Caesar is cooking. So Lorelai heads upstairs to check on Luke and encourage him to come down and make them pancakes. The place is a mess because Jess's mom finally sent the rest of his stuff, and now Luke can't find his supply ledger. Lorelai finds it and holds it hostage until he comes downstairs to make the pancakes. That night, Lorelai and Rory are walking to get supplies for movie night. They pass Luke's and see him sitting there alone, sadly drinking a beer and watching TV on his tiny television. He just needs some space from Jess. Lorelai encourages him to get a bigger apartment, but Luke isn't having it. Instead, he asks if Jess could clean Lorelai's gutters for her. Lorelai doesn't say yes right away, but on the walk home Rory says, "I thought you were going to give Jess a chance. You should hire him." After a little more guilt-tripping, Lorelai finally agrees. Then she asks Rory why it's so important that she like Jess. Rory comes up with an excuse, but Lorelai is wise to her. Luke heads upstairs and freaks out on Jess over the mess. He shouts, "WE'RE MOVING TOMORROW!" After looking at apartments, Jess goes to Rory's to get started on the gutters. Cool-guy Jess flips her a book when she opens the door and comments that her hair is different. Lorelai tries to make small talk with him, but he's not having it. When he goes outside, Rory follows him and asks him to try to get along with her mom. He's like, "Why?" She says, "If you care about me at all, you'll try." He replies, "Who says I care about you?" Classic Jess. Rory leaves to hang out with Dean at a book fundraiser. Dean is bored out of his mind. He says he wants to go see The Lord of the Rings again, which annoys Rory. Then he notices she isn't wearing the bracelet he gave her. She lies and says she took it off because of a rash and will put it back on later. In reality, she lost it... and Jess is holding it hostage. Lorelai invites Jess downstairs for lunch. At first he says no, but then he remembers what Rory asked him and decides to make an effort. Just then, Rory comes bursting through the door, freaking out because she's lost the bracelet. Luke calls Lorelai to complain about the injustices of renting. He says he needs a second opinion and asks her to come look at an apartment with him. She immediately leaves work. The apartment is really nice. Lorelai tells him, "Even if Jess goes home someday, you're still going to want this place. What if you meet someone?" She finally talks him into it... but then they discover the worst possible news: Taylor owns the building. Luke is immediately out. Taylor runs after him and says he's thinking about buying the flower shop next to the diner, but he needs Luke to take down the old hardware store sign because it confuses people. Luke says, "It was my dad's. I'm not taking it down," and storms off. Rory gets home, still upset about losing the bracelet. She talks to Jess about it, and he casually suggests she look in her room one more time. She walks in and immediately finds it under her bed. There it is. Lorelai goes outside to pay Jess for the job, but instead accuses him of stealing the bracelet because she caught him leaving Rory's room about 30 minutes before it mysteriously reappeared. Jess denies it. She says, "Don't 'whatever' me, you little jerk!"—like the uncle in Home Alone. She lectures him, saying that taking the bracelet only hurt Rory because it's the most precious thing she owns. Jess fires back, "If it's the most precious thing she owns, why did it take her two weeks to notice it was gone?" Yeah... I wouldn't start calling him "son" just yet. He storms off. Luke comes banging on the door, still fuming about Taylor. He reveals that, in a fit of blind rage, he bought the building that houses the diner. Lorelai tells him that honestly, owning the building isn't such a bad thing, and she talks him off the ledge. Before he leaves, she asks Luke if Jess ever talks to him about Rory. Luke says, "I don't know... but that would be great. She'd be such a good influence on him." Luke heads home, grabs a sledgehammer, knocks a giant hole through the apartment wall, and tells Jess...
