We meandered through mental health, vulnerability, self-awareness and so much more with some of the key insights being: - “Who’s looking after the people looking after the people?” – 03.35 - “A lesson I had to learn the hard way was that duty of care belongs to the individual first and foremost” - 05.50 - “I’m making it up as I go along. When I set up DOCIA Sport I was still poorly. If I had set it up when I was well, I would have had a 5-year plan, umpteen KPIs, I’d have blinkers on. Because I didn’t have the blinkers on, I have had opportunities and met different people that I otherwise would not have met” – 08.35 - “I am (now) more self-aware and therefore feel that I can make better intuitive decisions, if it feels right” – 15.25 - “When you talk about your vulnerability it gives people, at worst, permission to themselves to think more deeply about their own stuff and at best to engage in a conversation” – 21.55 - “Is it (role modelling vulnerability) courageous, is it brave I don’t know, but it feels intuitively right” 22.20 Ian can be contacted via the following means: LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/ian-braid-fmhc-484238/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/Imbraid Bio: Ian has brought together his significant experience in sport and his passion for helping others under the umbrella of DOCIAsport the company he founded in 2017. He brings a refreshing and independent view to all aspects of duty of care in sport from the perspective of coaches, officials, athletes, administrators and the sector itself. Ian is acknowledged as a trusted leader whose opinions are widely sought after in sport, higher education, government and business. He is recognised as a champion of mental health education and has given acclaimed keynote presentations throughout the UK. These include a guest lecture at Edge Hill University, a partner in mental health in sport. His vision as CEO of the British Athletes Commission led to the sector strengthening the support offered to vulnerable adults in sport. He also played a key role in the DCMS review of duty of care in sport assisting Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson. These became the platform for Ian to deliver sustainable positive change in sport, mental health provision and for the next generation of sport leaders applying his values, skills and experience. I really enjoyed this conversation with John Featherby who is a founding UK B Corp and speaks so eloquently and with such clarity about the opportunity that ay in front of us to become more humane, people-centric orgs that serve people, planet and profit. Some of the key reflections for me included: - “I spend as much time as I can in the countryside. I get most of my peace and my thinking when connected to natural landscapes” – 01.00 - “Problem-solving can only iterate the current reality, you can’t launch yourself into a new reality by just fixing what’s current. You have to create something new” – 27.05 - “They (children) are not asked to solve problems. What would the system look like if every child in school was being asked to solve problems, real problems that the adults are trying to deal with. That creates a totally different society” – 35.05 - “I did have some clarity young. For the most part, whilst you may have that clarity, it doesn’t mean that there is a group of people willing to listen” – 04.00 - “When we talk about change it always starts with some kind of death, some kind of price is paid for change at the start” - 05.20 - “Change the people, change the planet rather than the other way around. Ultimately this is a heart question” – 11.40 - “Organisations measure and engage with the physical stuff that’s easy to see, but actually we are so much more than the physical representation of ourselves” - 24.15 John can be contacted via the following means: LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnfeatherby/ Web - https://www.shoremount.com/ Bio: I am the owner of Shoremount, a consulting firm that seeks to restore joy, meaning and freedom to every workplace. I really enjoyed this conversation with Renee Smith who opens our conversation with one of the most vulnerable personal stories of vulnerability shared on this podcast so far. Renee really does role-model the change she wants to see in the world, bringing the importance of love to the workplace, however, people wish to name or adopt that. We also discuss leadership, culture, vulnerability, courage and much more. Some key highlights include: - “We want to contribute; we want to matter. We want to be cared about ourselves. Of course love belongs at work and when we are in a condition when we feel love, we give and do and be our very best” – 09.20 - “You are a good investment. Invest in yourself. I was worthy of investing in” – 11.45 - “We need to be creating an environment where you stop, and we turn and we face someone to truly listen to them, and we look them in the eye and we turn away from our devices and our computer and we hear them.” – 36.10 - “Tell me a story about a time when you felt afraid at work and tell me a story about a time when you felt loved or any version of that at work?” – 38.00 Renee can be found via the following means: Email - renee@makeworkmorehuman.com Website - https://www.makeworkmorehuman.com/ LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/renee-smith-wa-state-lean/ Bio: As the Founder and CEO of A Human Workplace, Renée champions a more loving, humane, and safe workplace where everyone is welcome to bring their whole selves to work. We discuss human-centered design, innovation, her sabbatical, #HumansFirst, community, awareness and so much more. Some of the key highlights for me include: - “I’ve seen how the business idea, developed in isolation, iterated, but not always with the information of the user with that information of the user coming late in the game. I love the human-centred philosophy which flips that” – 05.55 - “Start by listening to those that will be impacted. Understand that piece first without your assumptions and biases” – 07.25 - “why create in isolation, why not create by having input and feedback from the people that are going to actually experience whatever that output is” - 12.30 “I love approaching problems from this consideration of all of the others. I think that human-centred design accounts for that other piece” – 14.10 - “What inspires me is not just the human-centred design approach, but the intersection of public policy, legislation and date” – 14.25 - “The unknown felt really uncomfortable because it was so ambiguous” – 21.55 Arlene can be contacted via the following means: LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/arlenemendoza/ Please find my Interpersonal Catalyst brochure here in case I can support you at all -> https://my.visme.co/projects/rxyz4jpo-garry-turner-interpersonal-catalyst --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/valuevulnerability/message

I thoroughly enjoyed my first 3-way conversation on this platform and it really added some extra value. We discuss education, innovation, leadership, culture, language, purpose and so much more. Please find some of the key highlights as follows: - “One of the central, underlying themes of our book is the balance between smart and healthy. Smart is what we typically have a lot of training in. Yet much of our enjoyment, success and ability to pull off those things on the smart side, are really on the healthy side” – 06.45 - “What if you focussed 95% of your time on the people that you are leading and only 5% on the work itself, what would that look like”- 08.40 - “We work with leaders on the idea of having staff take greater ownership, that leaders don’t have to decide everything. Leading is me helping to develop you as a thinker and a future leader” – 12.50 - “If the leader jumps in too soon. If we hear from the leader too quickly around the table, people are going to pull back and say ‘why do I need to counter Jim, this is how he feels.’ – 17.50 - “If you want to stop a lot of people from emotional attachment to an organisation, talk about double digit growth. Over time her message changed to ‘we do well by doing good’” – 24.00 - “It’s a mistaken belief that as a leader you have to make decision” – 27.20 - “It’s not just about smarts, its also about healthy. You really need both in order make productive change happen” – 38.50 Bios: Jeff Ikler has worked in education in the broadest sense his whole life – first as a high school history teacher, then as an editor, marketer and executive in the educational publishing industry for more than 35 years and finally as Director of Quetico Coaching where he focuses on leadership development and career shifts. Kirsten Richert describes herself as an innovation catalyst—she acts as a key to bring out the innate talent, passion, and wisdom of a team so they can make their desired transformation. She is the CEO of Richert Innovation Consulting, a firm that brings together strategy, innovation, and facilitation to help leaders spark change. Jeff and Kirsten enjoy collaborating together on projects. In what was a hopeful, constructive and forward-looking conversation, we touched on inclusion, belonging, awareness, culture, leadership and so much more. Some key insights included: - “Diversity includes everybody. We need to make sure that everybody, every single person, is included and taken on the journey because it is only when businesses reflect the communities in which they’re based and the talent that’s around them, and the communities in which they serve, that they become high-performing businesses” – 03.10 “Sometimes I like to be sarcastic by saying that I will write the business case for you (D&I) when you write the business case why we should hire non-disabled people” - 09.45 “My recommendation is to use reverse mentoring with someone from a different background. Lean back, lean forward and step in” – 38.30 - “What three talking points do you need to give to your Chief Executive so that they are able to talk confidently from a podium about why diversity & inclusion is important to the organisation” – 04.40 - “(D&I) The business case is that it is the right thing to, we are talking about human rights. We should be creating businesses that enable anybody to work in the business regardless of their background so that they can come and contribute their best work so that the business thrives” – 09.00 - “My tip to anyone that wants to progress D&I in their organisation is to find out what language sticks within the business and speak that language in order to get your message across” – 12.00 - “The reason why I like co-creation is because so many organisations when they implement D&I it’s usually done from the HR department, done to people in the organisation, rather than down with” – 15.20 Toby can be contacted via the following means: Email - toby@mildon.co.uk Website - https://www.mildon.co.uk/ LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/tobymildon/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/tobymildon Bio: Toby Mildon is a Diversity & Inclusion Architect and founder of Mildon, a consultancy and advisory business. I absolutely loved this conversation with David who is the first person to come back onto the Value through Vulnerability for a 2nd time. Please fond as follows some of the rich insights and their timings in the podcast: - “The realisation I had was all of my leadership training was about telling people what to do; telling them nicely, telling them precisely, telling them so they thought it was there idea, but fundamentally about telling people what to do” – 02.45 - “First of all, I had to get away from this idea that I was controlling other peoples behaviour. We live in a world where we think that the way to have success in your job, is to get other people to do stuff” – 05.20 “I think there is a real limitation here which is they are only going to be as good as you, they are only going to be as proactive as you, and they’re not going to give that discretionary effort” - 05.40 - “just imagine if you needed to spend zero time managing people. You need to coordinate people, their efforts should to be coordinated, but what if you didn’t have to manage any of them, they just managed themselves.” – 07.05 - “It’s good people, trying to do the right thing, but with the wrong playbook of the industrial, playbook” – 19.10 David can be contacted via the followings means: Bio: Student of leadership and organizational design, former nuclear submarine commander, Author of Amazon #1 Best Seller: Turn the Ship Around!, Leadership is Language, and The Turn the Ship Around! Workbook, and one of Inc. Magazine’s Top 100 Leadership Speakers. David Marquet imagines a workplace where everyone engages and contributes their full intellectual capacity, a place where people are healthier and happier because they have more control over their work–a place where everyone is a leader. A 1981 U.S. Naval Academy graduate, Captain Marquet served in the U.S. submarine force for 28 years. After being assigned to command the nuclear powered submarine USS Santa Fe–then ranked last in retention and operational standing–he realized the traditional leadership approach of “take control, give orders,” wouldn’t work. He “turned the ship around” by treating the crew as leaders, not followers, and giving control, not taking control. This approach took the Santa Fe from “worst to first,” achieving the highest retention and operational standings in the navy. After Captain Marquet’s departure, the Santa Fe continued to win awards and promoted a disproportionate number of officers and enlisted men to leadership positions, including ten subsequent submarine captains. Stephen R. Covey said it was the most empowering organization he’d ever seen and wrote about Captain Marquet’s leadership practices in his book, The 8th Habit. Captain Marquet is the author of Turn the Ship Around! A True Story of Turning Followers Into Leaders. Fortune magazine named it the #1 must-read business book of the year, and USA Today listed it as one of the top 12 business books of all time. He is also the author of The Turn the Ship Around Workbook, which is a companion workbook for implementing Intent-Based Leadership. In 2020 PenguinRandomHouse will publish David’s next big idea book: Leadership is Language. This is a re-engineering of the language we use at work and a new playbook for leaders. This is one of my favourite conversations EVER! Sara is a certified #DaretoLead facilitator having trained with Brene Brown after passing a rigorous application process. We discuss in detail vulnerability, shame, empathy, leadership, privilege, courage, risk and so much more. Some example insights shared by Sara include: - “It was a massive risk because the training dates are set for the year. There was huge risk if I got it, there was huge risk financially” – 05.10 - “Why is it important? When there is no courage in an organisation, when courage is absent, we’re able to identify classic behaviours that show up like back-channelling, like not giving feedback, like not having difficult conversations, lack of creativity, lack of innovation, lack of risk” – 08.20 “We can’t be courageous, we can’t be brave, without vulnerability. Why should we do it? The risks of not doing it are far, far too great” - 08.25 “I didn’t realise the extent to which it would change myself in doing the work” 17.25 - “When we get ahead of ourselves, we need to have a call that says ‘heal,’ to bring yourself back to who you are, to who you really are” 23.00 “I’ve had a 180-degree shift in who I thought I was and who I am now in terms of my ethnicity, my presence, my identity. You cannot out a price on that” - 30.50 Sara can be contacted via the following means: LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/sarananayakkara/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/nthlevel Website - http://www.nthlevelconsulting.com/ Bio: Sara has 26 years’ experience of design, facilitation, coaching and consultancy in the private and public sector on a global scale. The only thing you can do is introduce a tiny change and see how that system reacts to that" - “What is the smallest possible change that I could make to maintain the biggest part of the algorithm, change a small part, but at the same time have a huge impact” - “I think that we have way more power in our hands than we want to believe” - “The people that I consider to be cultural revolutionaries, one of the characteristics is that they lead from the heart and purpose rather than the ego” - “Culture is not just global, culture is very much local” Aga can be found via the following means: Website - https://www.agabajer.com/ LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/agabajer/ Bio: Aga works with leaders and teams around the globe to help them bring their vision to life. Steve can be contacted via the following means: Web - https://www.gratitudeatwork.ca/#home-1 LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/steveforangratefulceo/ Steve's bio: My dream is 1 billion happier people. I began exploring the relationship between gratitude and philanthropic giving while completing my Masters at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Since then, I’ve been writing and conducting practice-based gratitude research and teaching the habits of gratefulness... close to fifteen years now. What has emerged is our science-based program, Gratitude At Work. It's a simple, yet innovative approach to thriving leadership and business growth. I founded Gratitude at Work in 2007 and started hosting conversations in my community which have since grown into work with leaders across Canada and into the United States, shifting cultures, helping leaders and their teams bring more gratitude to work each day. Don’t blame me for being an electrical engineer. You’ll love the attention to detail and be surprised by my thoughtful approach to all working relationships. I want to see people spend more time thriving and less time surviving so in early 2019 published my first book, Surviving to Thriving - The 10 Laws of Grateful Leadership. I’m a son, brother, husband, father and newly minted grandfather. My kids poke fun at my gratitude work (air quotes) and my nationally recognized video blog. In 2017, I was awarded the highest earned designation in professional speaking (CSPTM). I recently created STATUSGROTM to give everyone easy on-line access to the secrets of gratitude and thriving leadership. I believe we are walking miracles and as such we all possess our own special gifts. I also believe that it is our responsibility, to share those gifts with the world. That is how we repay to the universe the investment it made in our creation. It’s the Law of Economics at its core as Napoleon Hill stresses in his book Think and Grow Rich written in 1937 - “you don’t get something for nothing.” I believe that an organization is a group of people that come together bringing their unique gifts to solve a job to be done with the world. Only when everyone in the organization can bring his/her unique gifts to the table in a wholeheartedly way, while allowing others to do the same, will that organization solve that job to be done as a synchronized symphony - creating its own unique melody for others to receive. Because the universe provides us with the perfect vessels that carry those unique gifts, we owe it, to create this melody as MUCH as possible and share it with as MANY others as we can in the BEST way we know possible. That is our responsibility as an organization and since we cannot get something for nothing, if we do NOT comply, the universe will come back to collect in the form of dissatisfied customers, poor service reviews, profit losses, inability to remain competitive, poor employee morale and eventually the end of its relevance and existence. I really enjoyed this deeply insightful and diverse conversation with Eleanor Snare who has the wonderfully affectionate title of Business Witch who focuses on Getting Artists and Writers Organised with mindset coaching, operations advice + marketing expertise. Eleanor's insight, however, crosses every profession and every human being for me. She shares what vulnerability means to her; we discuss the power of intuition, non-violent communication, awareness, courage, emotions, leadership and so much more. Eleanor can be contacted via the following means: Email - hello@eleanorsnare.com Website - http://eleanorsnare.com/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/eleanorsnare LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/eleanorsnare/ Bio: Someone described what I do as 'art counselling'. Someone else said it's 'sparkly PRINCE 2'. It's a mixture of coaching, mentoring, consultancy and educational techniques. It's bringing you ideas from years of marketing and communication experience. It's having someone who gives a shit about you, your work and believes creativity is going to be what saves our world. My goal is to help you feel confident and organised so that you can get on with developing and sharing your creative gifts. What holds creative people back is not a lack of Instagram skills, networking nerves, procrastination over blog posts or any of that fiddling nonsense. It's their level of self-belief. We've been encouraged to think creativity isn't 'useful' to the world. Bullshit. It's crucial. It's essential. It's what this is all FOR. So I tend to work with the people I think are going to change the world: artists, writers, makers and creative folk who feel frustrated, unhappy, confused and want someone to support them in making their dreams a reality. I generally work with them one-to-one for about six to twelve weeks, as this gives them the accountability they need as well as ensuring they see the big changes they really want to see. (Although they tend to see changes immediately after the first session, and I do one-off sessions too). Creativity is why we are here. It's what brings vibrancy to life. Otherwise, it's all bank balances and salad. I want to help more creative people get more of their gifts out into the world so we can change it for the better. Renata can be contacted via any of the following means: LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/renata-porter/ Website - https://www.renataporter.com/ Email - rp@renataporter.com Bio: WHAT I DO: I work with managers, small business owners and companies who want to go to the next level in Leadership. Where they build fully engaged teams that enjoy their place of work, know the value they bring and have the desire to exceed all expectations. I help them connect by being inclusive, transparent, inspiring and most of all, Lead through Action. WHY IT WORKS: Quite honestly, I stay out of theory and get into action. I've spent the last 10 years in Leadership roles. I've worked in both the Public and Private sectors as well as with Non-Profits. I've gained a wealth of knowledge when it comes to leading teams and I know how to build empowered teams that WANT to outperform and overdeliver. While my roles have been varied, the common denominator is how I connect with people. The ability to truly connect with my staff, peers, and superiors is what sets me apart. My approach is to deliver real and actionable programs that managers can make their own and start building on their successes quickly. HOW IT WORKS: I have two avenues, consulting or training. For consulting, the first step is to begin your transformation is to schedule a complimentary 30-minute strategy session. From there we decide on what direction works best for you. These strategies can be delivered through workshops, courses, personal coaching or a combination of the three. With regards to training, I provide a variety of options. Those are online self-study, face to face workshops, webinar workshops (great for busy or remote teams) and face to face or remote coaching. I realised that I needed to be more in control of my time, and also, more importantly, that I wanted to actively help teachers to find an alternative, more positive, way of working. This lead me to set up my own company: Lifted and Gifted Education. The first step on my journey, alongside healing myself, was to learn as much as I could about human behaviour and communication. I studied Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), Mindfulness, Body Language, and Personality Types, all of which helped me to form a clearer understanding of how our communication styles and behaviours can lead us into dark and difficult places, including: Anxiety Absenteeism Burnout My learning informed the creation of two bespoke programmes for CEOs and senior leadership teams in schools and creative businesses. I had the pleasure of welcoming Lorna Lesson from Little Tent onto the podcasts. I learned about the origin of Lorna's company name, the importance of inclusion & vulnerability to her practice, the variety of artistic talent that sits within her and her new innovation to help leaders (it sounds amazing!) I found it fascinating to draw on other parallels such as the move to more agile working, which in essence, is exactly what Lorna will support from a different angle.
