This fine episode of Death By DVD originally premiered on 4/20/2022Do you know what 4/20 stands for? For a lot of folks it means BLAZE IT! Lets get high! And on 4/20, well, people get high! Boy do they get high. But 4/20 has another special meaning. On 4/20/1999 two young boys murdered 15 of their classmates with deadly weapons, a crime that would briefly shock the nation! On this episode we aren't getting high (yes we are) but we're "shooting" the shit about a movie called DUCK! The Carbine High Massacre which came out a whopping SIX MONTHS after the Columbine High School Massacre! You may want to roll a joint for this episode. You'll need it. On this episode we give you a free sample of Death By DVD's Patreon, with a Patreon exclusive episode. Get a sweet kiss of summer, with this episode recorded for our 2023 Summer School, all about the infamous 80s movie from Troma, SURF NAZIS MUST DIE! "Sometimes, it's all in the name. On this episode we dive deep into the classic Troma title SURF NAZIS MUST DIE. One of the most legendary exploitation films of all time we go left foot first (Because goofy footing cannot do!) into a movie often looked over because of its title, the company that released it, and that fact that it is PURE exploitation. This film is a gem and we hope you enjoy this UNCUT and UNCENSORED Summer School episode. The following episode is totally uncut and, oh I would say, 97% as close to as what it sounded like the moment we recorded. A little bit of editing was done on this episode and I am sure you can tell where, but it mostly is the entire uncut conversation. I hope you enjoy, thank you for supporting Death By DVD, whooo, SUMMER SCHOOL! Crack a beer and hang ten, it's time for surf nazis must die!"Want more? Writer, director, and stuntman Jim Van Bebber gave us a brutally violent action packed film called 'Deadbeat at Dawn'. In 1988, the streets of Dayton Ohio aren't safe. The endless gang war between The Ravens and The Spiders seems like it will never end. The Ravens' leader, Goose, is convinced by the woman he loves to quit the gang. If only it was that easy. On this episode we aren't getting high (yes we are) but we're "shooting" the shit about a movie called DUCK! The Carbine High Massacre which came out a whopping SIX MONTHS after the Columbine High School Massacre! You may want to roll a joint for this episode. You'll need it. Deadbeat at Dawn is essentially a student film. Jim Van Bebber, Chumpzilla's childhood neighbor, dropped out of college and used his student loans to fund it. It's unapologetic exploitation cinema from the warped mind of Van Bebber, and it is glorious. It's violent, obscene, odd, overwritten, and surprisingly boasts action scenes that outshine crap we've done on the pod from far more expensive movies. It's sort of shocking how well done some of it is. Thus, there's no denying that Deadbeat at Dawn, which cost roughly $10,000, does display Van Bebber's talent. That said, it is also just sort of a bizarre mishmash of better films—Death Wish and The Warriors, for example. But, hey, you could watch those, but neither of them feature Bone Crusher! He hates people, man; and he doesn't give a shit about nothing! So sit back, smash a Miller High Life over Danny's head, and grab your nunchuks! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Cash, Mayor McCheese, and Chumpzilla are rumbling with the Spiders at the old cemetery! This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – He quit the gangs. They killed his girl. He became ... Deadbeat at Dawn! (00:00) Lingering Questions – We hear from our brothers in beer at Hop Nation USA and then tackle the important questions, such as: Who's the best side character? And why is it clearly Bone Crusher? (35:25) The "No ... I Loved Her" Trivia Challenge – The Double Turn Podcast cashes in Money in the Bank, and then Chumpzilla challenges the field to trivia about the movie. (51:08) Recommendations – We offer our picks for the week and next up: We continue "Hops and Hometown Flops" at the Double Deuce with Road House! (1:02:56) And, as always, hit us up on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram to check out all the interesting factoids—the legend of Jim Van Bebber and more—from this week's episode! Hey there! Remember that time we all ran away to the big city to play golf and exorcize teenagers? Neither do we, but it sounds like a sweet dream. Find out what sorta BMX tricks we'd have pulled together in this hypothetical scenario when you donloyd and listen now! Up first! It's 1980's Times Square! The third film in Kevin Moss's continuing series exploring the runaway teenagers of the 1980s, this one's got marquees-a-plenty and a supporting turn by Tim Curry portraying none other than Johnny LaGuardia, famed fictional NYC radio DJ. The soundtrack's chock full of bangers from top to bottom, but does the movie thrill us? !Next up! There's very little exorcism and absolutely no teenagers in 1991's Teenage Exorcist, but that can't stop us from reviewing it. It's a Fred Olen Ray production, after-all, and Parker Bowman's got priorities when it comes to enjoying every instance of a leather bikini-clad Brinke Stevens whipping Eddie Deezen in a demonic basement scenario. Finally! Of course, it's 2004's 3-Iron (aka Bin Jip). It's the Korean romance film that you just KNEW we'd review some day - and the day is here. Is it a Sean pick, though, or does it not feature any baffling stretches of surreal silence? Is it even about golf? All this plus the trouble with cicadas, a cricket's jihad, Kevin wants his classic Jughead doll, a weirder looking dude than Paul Giamatti, being unfair to Jim Van Bebber, casting out demons on Skype, Siskel v Ebert: a heavyweight title match, extended musical interludes, nerd news and even more! It took four years and many many punches, but the final product is a roller coaster of a stinker. Jim Van Bebber's gang-revenge film has one of the craziest final fights ever captured in film. Along the way is a series of bonkers sequences that may or may not work for everyone but it's still a wild ride. The first 2/3 of the film is pretty slow, if we are honest. You have your typical "gang murdered my babe and now I gotta get me some revenge" plot but it seems there just wasn't enough material to have just that plot line. The film would have been about 30 minutes if it stuck to the plan. So there's alot of scenes that seem to be put in as time fillers. These time fillers setup the protagonist's (Goose) life and universe but they have very little to do with anything and can be a little tedious to get past. Once the movie hits the gas pedal though, watch out! The last 1/3 of the film is some seriously ridiculous action. Goose's handling of the attacks on him and his subsequent attacking of the gang members rivals Danton (Deadly Prey). He kicks some serious ass. He dispatches about 30 guys in less than 20 minutes. He's offing guys at a rate of 1.5 per minute. It's awesome. Deadbeat at Dawn isn't the most exciting of movies and most might walk away but the end is so worth the trip that we say it's a good choice for any fan of the genres of budget, action, or revenge films.

Episode 19 of the podcast was spawned by a request from a listener for us to focus on revenge thrillers. The listener suggested 1980's The Exterminator and we chose 1988's Deadbeat at Dawn. These are both low-budget but incredibly well executed examples of the revenge sub-genre.The Exterminator stars Robert Ginty and Christopher George who both turn in respectable performances. Ginty is the eponymous character while George is the policeman who wants to end his vigilante justice. Deadbeat at Dawn features the multi-talented Jim Van Bebber as writer, director, stunt coordinator, and star. It is one of the best examples of micro-budget filmmaking and is a powerful experience to this day.Send us your thoughts on the show and recommendations for future episodes to flickersfrom@yahoo.com or flickersfrom@gmail.com. Every Horror Movie On Netflix

This week, we're joined by Very Special Guest Allyson-with-a-Y as we explore the horror— or is it gothic romance?— of Guillermo del Toro's CRIMSON PEAK. Loki is in the United States again and this time he's stealing our daughters and taking them to an English mansion with stunning architecture and a seeping foundation. What happens next is anyone's guess. Also anyone's guess is why Chris is talking like Daniel Plainview, why Allyson liked THE SHAPE OF WATER if they don't like "fish love," how Jim Van Bebber made DEADBEAT BEFORE DAWN without killing all his friends, and why this movie got such a polarized critical response. We dive into all those questions and more-- join us!
