Episode Overview In this episode of The Design Vault, hosts Albert Shum and Thamer Abanami explore the remarkable story of the Bandai Tamagotchi—a simple plastic egg with three buttons that revolutionized our relationship with technology. Born from Japan's economic "lost decade" and the rise of kawaii culture, this virtual pet created an entirely new paradigm for emotional engagement with digital devices. From Akihiro Yokoi's inspiration watching a boy unable to take his pet turtle on vacation, to the collaboration between toy company Bandai and design firm Wiz, the Tamagotchi pioneered concepts that would later define social media, mobile gaming, and AI companions. This episode reveals how a 32x16 pixel screen taught millions about digital responsibility while establishing the psychological phenomenon known as the "Tamagotchi effect." Lifecycle of the VC Fund Hello, this is Hall T. Martin with the Startup Funding Espresso -- your daily shot of startup funding and investing. Venture Capital funds typically run on ten-year cycles. At a high level, the VC fund takes in capital from the Limited Partners and deploys the first half of the funds in years 1 to 3. The follow-on rounds are deployed in years 4 to 5. The fund collects returns in years 6 to 10. There may be early failures, in which case the allocated funds for the follow-on round are still available. The funds not yet deployed or allocated are called ‘dry powder'. This is the amount of funds available to deploy for new companies. Investments made during the latter half of the fund are made in later-stage companies, which can achieve an exit faster. Some portfolio companies fail to exit during the ten-year window. The team must decide whether to delay the exit to gain a larger return or sell the company to remove it from the books. During the latter half of the life cycle, the VC team helps the companies grow and then achieve an exit. This is where the VC's network comes in. A good fit for a VC is a company in which they can help find additional team members as well as follow-on funding. Consider the life cycle of the VC fund and how it impacts the time spent by the VC team. Thank you for joining us for the Startup Funding Espresso where we help startups and investors connect for funding. Let's go startup something today. _______________________________________________________ For more episodes from Investor Connect, please visit the site at: Check out our other podcasts here: For Investors check out: For Startups check out: For eGuides check out: For upcoming Events, check out For Feedback please contact info@tencapital.group Please , share, and leave a review. In many organizations, security exception management is a manual process, often treated as a simple compliance checkbox. Life doesn't always go as planned. For some, the path is clear. For others, it takes unexpected turns. That was true for one former athlete whose dream of going pro ended with a heart condition. But instead of giving up, he pivoted—with purpose. He moved from the field to farming, and later, to medicine. It wasn't easy. The path didn't make sense on paper, but someone believed in him. Now, he's creating something bigger: The Youth Sports Awards. More than just trophies, it's a national stage to honor young athletes as leaders, students, and changemakers. It's about recognizing not just performance, but potential. It invites doctors, parents, icons, and supporters to pour into the next generation on and off the field. This isn't just an event. It's a movement. A reminder that success isn't always about staying on the same path—it's about knowing when to pivot. Dr. William Hill is a doctor and former college athlete who helps young people succeed through sports and education. He founded Athlete Forever and the Youth Sports Awards to support and celebrate young athletes. He cares deeply about helping young athletes grow both on and off the field, teaching them skills like money management and wellness. In this episode with Dr. William Hill, we explore his inspiring journey of overcoming sudden setbacks, transitioning from athlete to surgeon, and the passion behind creating the Youth Sports Awards—a platform that celebrates young athletes' achievements both on and off the field. Tune in for inspiration on chasing your purpose and supporting the next generation of athletes. “You have to go after what your mission, vision and purpose is. This week on the podcast, we discussed Jackie's recent visit to St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, to attend the Energy NL conference. Energy NL is the province's energy supply and service sector association, which annually hosts the province's flagship conference on conventional and clean energy. This week, Charlene Johnson, Chief Executive Officer of Energy NL, joins the podcast to explore Newfoundland and Labrador's energy potential and the discussions at the conference. Among the topics covered were potential nation-building projects, such as the Churchill River hydroelectric development—a joint $33 billion potential initiative by Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro and Hydro-Québec that aims to add nearly 4 GW of new electricity generation capacity on the river. Another significant project discussed was Equinor's Bay du Nord offshore oil development, which could open a new offshore basin 500 km off the coast of Newfoundland. In addition to covering the conference highlights, Jackie and Peter recapped the past week's events, including the constructive First Ministers' meeting in Saskatoon on June 2nd. During this meeting, Prime Minister Carney outlined the criteria for nation-building projects. Furthermore, on June 6th, the Carney government tabled new legislation, “Bill C-5: One Canadian Economy: An Act to enact the Free Trade and Labour Mobility in Canada Act and the Building Canada Act.” The goal is to pass the bill into law by Canada Day. The way the world functions works through women. Our world moves through seasons. Similarly, women go through different phases in their monthly cycle that correlate with the seasons of nature. As women, when we understand the way our menstrual cycle works (even in perimenopause and menopause), we are able to better understand ourselves, especially our moods, our energy levels, and our natural tendencies during different times of the month.Malka Chana Amichai, a certified Postpartum Doula, is passionate about helping women connect to their femininity. Her mission is to educate and support women to be active participants in their own life experiences. She expanded her practice to become a Prenatal Yoga instructor, a Kallah teacher who gives premarital education to brides, and a sexual health mentor. He main objective is to empower women in their womanhood and to facilitate their reconnection with the divine feminine that flows through all of us.Below are the phases of our menstrual cycle, as they correspond to each season:Menstrual Phase--Winter--just like when it's cold in the winter, we cuddle up with cozy socks and a warm blanket, and tend to stay home, during the time we are menstruating, women go inward. They want to spend more time at home; they tend to want to be by themselves; they do a lot of inner work and self-care during this time of the month.Follicular Phase--Spring--just like in the spring when the flowers start blooming, and the weather starts getting warner, women start coming out of their shell more. They tend to want to be around people a bit more than during the menstrual phase. They experience more creativity, inspiration and hope.Ovulation Phase--Summer--just like in the summer when it's hot and everything is in full bloom, women are more aroused, they want to be closer with their partner, they want to be around their friends and be much more social and outgoing. This is the phase of the month when they feel most connected to others.Post Ovulation Phase--Fall--just like the fall is the transition between summer and winter, the post period phase is an in between time for women; a type of "nowhere zone," where we feel that we're neither here nor there. This is the time when we experience higher than usual anxiety. If you are in the perimenopause or menopause phase of your life, you can still connect to your cycle through the phases of the moon. Rosh Chodesh is a women's holiday, and it's marked by the New Moon.New Moon--correlates with the menstruation phase (winter)Waxing Moon--correlates with the follicular phase (spring)Full Moon--correlates with the ovulation phase (summer)Waning Moon--correlates with the post ovulation phase (fall)Malka Chana also talks about how mothers can introduce the concept of menstruation and periods to her preteen or teenage daughter, and how mothers can transmit to them the beauty of being a woman. For more information on Malka Chana, visit her website: https://www.bohemianbalabusta.com/about-me/Vera Kessler (host of America's Top Rebbetzins) is a certified life coach.
